PART 1: • The Real Purpose of Ch...
PART 2: • What Is Atherosclerosi...
PART 3: • Problems With Low Chol...
LDL is not cholesterol, Low density lipoprotein is a protein that shuttles cholesterol and triglycerides. LDL is the carrier that transports cholesterol from the liver to the vessels and cells and HDL transports the cholesterol from the arteries back to the liver.
The body makes 3000 mg of cholesterol. Why?
    1. Makes cell membranes
    2. Antioxidant properties
    3. Anti-inflammatory properties
    4. Makes vitamin D
    5. Helps you make bile thus extracting fat-soluble vitamins
    6. Makes cortisol
    7. Makes sex hormones (testosterone, estrogen, etc.
    AND
    8. Helps the body respond to crisis (infection)
    9. It binds and inactivates bacterial toxins
    10. Helps inhibit the damage from microbes
    11. Acts as a band-aid to help in the healing of the endothelium layer.
There are 2 types of LDL.
    Type A (large buoyant)
*normal, not involved in damage repair.
*last 2 days in the body
    Type B (small dense)
*Because these are small, they can enter the damaged wall of the artery and are involved in clotting and plaquing.
    *last 5 days
Look at your triglycerides - if they are high and your HDL is low, then you have more type B LDL. But if your triglycerides are low and high HDL, then you have type a.
Saturated fats will increase type A and sugars will increase type B.
LOW-CARB, HIGH-NUTRIENT DIETS CAN SWITCH YOUR TYPE B TO TYPE A.

Why would someone have too much LDL pattern B
    1. Sugar
    2. Cortisol
    3. Vegetable oil (soy and corn)
    4. Trans fats (hydrogenated fats)
    5. Low vitamin C
    6. Glycation (adding glucose/fructose with protein and fat): donuts, fries, caramelization, dark soda. Fructose cause 10X more glycation.
    7. Surgery
    8. Visceral fat
High levels of LDL should be understood rather than merely lowered. Find the real deeper cause.

I've been doing keto and IF for four months, and I've lost close to 30 pounds. I walk 2+ miles every morning. I had blood tests this week and my physician went into panic mode and wanted to put me on statins immediately, solely based on my LDL, and disregarding that my TG went down 44 points. This is exactly the video I needed to see this week!

Love this explanation, Dr. Berg. You have a gift for stating things simply, so the layman can understand. I have high LDL, but my Triglycerides and HDL are at perfect levels. So, your explanation about the so-called BAD cholesterol makes me feel great, reassuring me that my IF and Keto plan is working for me. Thank you once again!!

I didn't know there were two kinds of LDL. I've been searching everywhere for reasons why my triglycerides would be super low while my LDL is high. This has been educational and interesting.

You divide your TG by 5 if measured in mg/dl or by 2.2 if measured in mmdl/l if more than 30mg/dl or more than 2.2 mmol/L these
levels then you have high VLDL and you need to follow the advice given by Dr Berg. ( Info from mayo Clinic)

    Hi Dr Berg..
    Been following your advice...
Even talked to three heart specialists about if cholesterol and calcium are bandaids for the blood vessels..
    They said yes..
Off Lipitor 20 milligrams a day and blood pressure tables now for a year now..
Change my diet .. eat one meal a day and exercise...!!!
My weight was 89 kilograms and now I weight is 73 kilograms.
    Guess what..!!!!
Blood pressure normal now and cholesterol 3.1...
    Never felt better..
Doctors can't believe the turn around with out the drugs...!!
Said to me you need to stay on them..!!!
I proved to them that It is possible but you have to change your eating habits..
And can live on one meal a day...
I drink Braggs Apple cider vinegar..( With the mother ) first thing in the morning and last thing at night..
You know what your talking about...
    Cheers Tony.

According to my blood test mid last year my total cholesterol was 8.0. Freaking high according to my doctor and tested when I had some pain in the upper right side. I had an ultrasound and via this detected a bit of fatty liver that was sitting around my gall bladder but no gall stones. Liver enzymes slightly elevated but within the so called normal range. Yes, I was still a bit overweight but prior to my rare trip to my local GP had lost 20kgs (44 pounds) within 6 months upon adopting a whole food plant based eating plan primarily high nutrient foods and starches with nuts and seeds and coconut oil. GP referred me to see a dietician with a view to being put on statins drugs. I told the doctor there is a family history of high cholesterol and still the matriarch is alive and kicking. BTW my Oma turned 96 two weeks ago with consistently similarly high cholesterol reading since blood test incorporated it into a full blood test. She still eats very well with lots of (in this order) veges, fruits, small portioned meat/fish and saturated fats.

Amazingly helpful and so spot on for what I wanted to know. My LDL was high (a little over 130), but my HDL was "very" high. From this video, I learned to look at the HDL & triglycerides (low for me) and can assume my LDL is likely more Type A. I am not overweight, I eat Keto and fast regularly - so until this video I (and my doctor) were in mystery as to whether I needed to change something or not. Seems not. Thanks so much Dr. Berg!

Thank you Dr. Berg, my doctor called me today to say she wanted to start me on a medication because my cholesterol is high. I thought it was because I’ve been intermittently fasting, but I now believe my blood is normal. My cholesterol jumped to 250 from 201, triglyceride dropped to 41 from 83, HDL is 78 from 75, and my LDL jumped to 170 from 122. I thought I was going to have a heart attack or stroke soon, but now I feel better. I work out 5 days a week in the gym, intermittent fast 18/6 everyday, lost 25 lbs. to 148 lbs at 5’5”, and eat mostly Keto sporadically, so I felt healthy. Why don’t our doctors know this information?

This explanation is so valuable to the people Dr. Berg. Our own PCP can't explain the why we are having certain symptoms let alone explain bloodwork. They don't even have a diet we can follow. Your an amazing doctor. Your the modern day hero. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. We are listening.

Thank you!

Some cheat days once a week. Why are my numbers going a little the wrong way. I dropped 15 pounds from 182 to 167lbs. Workout most days, 61 years old. I’m pre-diabetic, How do I improve?

Thank you Dr. Berg. The 4 video series on HDL/LDL Cholesterol was awesome and insightful. I am on a Keto Diet and IF since Nov 2018, and came down from 207lb and over 40% body fat to 163lb and 28.9% body fat plus extra 5lb of lean muscle. I just had my Apolipoprotein B-100 tested and I was told that LDL is being a problem and should stay away from Saturated Fats due to "likelihood" of heart disease. In other words, I was implicitly told to stop the Keto Diet, even though it is giving me amazing results and making feel great. Anyway, your video really clarified the real purpose of LDL and it is importance, and I am confident in sticking to my guns on the Keto diet and continuing to achieve amazing results. Thank you

DEAR DR. BERG..i am in awe at the clarity and kind of information you are sharing with us here. I've been diagnosed with high ldl and better than normal hdl...plus normal tri=glycerides over the past year. My diet is basically ketogenic with occasional "errant" inclusions..i.e. sprouted grain and sour dough breads, a little rice, oats, etc. My sugar intake is limited to stevia, coconut palm sugar, and a little honey and b.s.molasses..Once in a great while i will have a cookie, brownie, piece of pie, etc. when eating with friends, or because i "want" it..This is not part of my regular diet however. Rarely do I eat fried foods. I saute in coconut oil only, and use olive oil on salads, or "after" cooking for flavor. THIS VIDEO is THE most informative one of any out there..
on the 2 types of LDL...No one else I have listened to on You Tube..including other doctors, naturopaths, and lay people have mentioned this. THANKyou for your service and dedication to educating people with your knowledge, research and insights. Much appreciated indeed!! and always timely no matter when people finally find you here!!! Aloha from Hawaii.
