LDL cholesterol isn’t a good indication of mortality risk, but remnant cholesterol is.

0:00 How to understand the basics of cholesterol
4:45 Here are the five types of lipoprotein, along with each one’s function
7:35 Dave Feldman explains the complex subject of cholesterol in an easy-to-understand way
15:15 Several years ago, Dave became obsessed with finding out more about cholesterol. He experiments on himself.
26:45 Dave explains how HDL cholesterol works closely with other types of lipoproteins
I interviewed cholesterol expert Dave Feldman. First, I explain the basics of cholesterol, so you’ll understand the concepts he describes.
Cholesterol isn’t fat. It provides the raw materials for certain hormones; it makes up all of your cellular membranes, and part of your brain, and insulates your nerves. Cholesterol helps make bile, which allows your body to properly digest certain fats to extract fat-soluble vitamins, and essential fatty acids, and make vitamin D.
Your body makes about 3,000 mg of cholesterol every day. While cholesterol is part of the plaquing in arteries, it’s not the cause of clogged arteries. Instead, it’s a healing substance.
Triglycerides are a type of fat, and I explain how your body transports them with the five different types of lipoproteins.
Dave Feldman is a software engineer who’s become a cholesterol expert, and regularly performs experiments and biohacking on himself. In this video, he explains cholesterol in an easy-to-understand way. He also talks about the role of keto and fasting. I promise you’ll find his talk both valuable and entertaining!
Treat yourself to this highly informative explanation of cholesterol, keto, fasting, and their role in your health.

This is a long presentation, but important because of the massive complexities and related big words. Take your time and pause and digest each point especially if you have any concerns or ideas that your high cholesterol or LDL is going to harm you. We spent quite a bit of time trying to explain each piece of the puzzle so you get it.

I worked a decade at the greatest software company of the last century as a software tester, writing software to test shrink-wrapped applications and automating processes inhouse; Gotta say, software developers are very smart and detailed oriented in their work. This probably spills over into their real lives also.

the problem with doctors are they aren't trained properly, all of them (after getting graduated from med school) aren't confident with giving nutrition advice.

I never get tired of watching this. Feldman, Cummins et al as Engineers have Scientifically explained the Lipid System in our amazing bodies. Doctors like you and laymen like these have a love for the Science of the Human Body (Physiology of). You, all, are making a difference in quality of life, by educating those of us that have trusted a System that has failed us. Time to take control of our Nutritional lives through Education. Can never thank you enough for your commitment and hard work needed to prepare and present. Then it’s up to us to make it work in our own lives.

Wow absolutely amazing! This shows how the SAD way of eating is killing all of us. The average Dr is not concerned with Keto, except mine, who told me to go on Keto diet and put's his patients on it. I am learning to make new recipes to stay on it. I had lost weight and went back to eating junk. This time around, I am educating myself more because this is not a diet but should be the only way of eating. This also shows why weight watchers stock plummeted and all the people pushing the wrong information for years are running scared. Just remember there are big bucks in illness, it is a business and many companies stand to lose if we all get well. Thank you so much DR BERG!! You are the best

My best friend tried cholesterol lowering medication. And she went back off because of the side effects. I won't even go on a statin because I know what it will do to me.

Thank you for the information on all of your videos! And I mean that with the utmost sincerity. I had an EXTREMELY poor diet about a month ago. I suffered from a seriously bloated stomach, sever lethargy, achy joints, depression/anxiety. I was eating cookies and brownies probably 5 or 6 days out of the week. This passed month my diet is completely changed and for the past 5 days I've been fasting 20 hours each day🤯 something I never thought possible. Whenever I had cravings I would put on one of your videos and they would help keep me on track. I had a brownie yesterday that I couldn't even finish due to my new diet and significantly lower cravings. Sugar was on my mind most of the time and now I can happily say I might think of something sweet maybe once a week. My quality of life has drastically improved and you have played a part in it. Thanks doc ❤

Dr. Berg, I would love to hear your thoughts on those with Familial Hyperlipidemia! I have it, and have been seeing a very cutting edge cardiologist here in LA (who is a fan of Feldman and keto!) after we found I have 28% blockage as a 36 yr old incredibly fit and otherwise healthy man. It frustrates me to no end I still have to take meds for this condition. Diet was not making much of a dent in the LDL-P and 2 other true danger factors that are produced by my own body and not from diet. Thanks in advance, I love your work, watch every video you put out!

I’m also FH. I’ve been on 22 drugs. Statins nearly killed me. I’ve been on LDL Apheresis and now in my third clinical trial for PCSK9 Inhibitors. I was in a 5 year study for Repatha and that works well with least side effects for me. If cholesterol were killer I’d have been dead decades ago. I’m 57 now. It’s insulin resistance and vascular damage that are the culprits then the cholesterol fills in the damage and blockages start. Look at D3/K2 to remove the calcium and blockages and help reverse heart disease, it’s helping me. Good luck!

I'm with this guy 100% and this low CARB idea but bodies are different. I lived off CARBS the last ~20 yr of my life as a runner pretty much and stayed in the 140 LBS weight range and ran from all fats. My body just will not gain much weight per yr no matter what I do. Even after stopping running, I stayed with the CARBS, probably less of them, and my wight stayed the same.
Now I'm cutting out lots of the CARBS, mostly sugars, plus actually eating some fatty foods, and no changes in my body weight again...

Yesterday I found out that after 4 years my CA score went from 57 to 220. Very discouraging. I am normal weight. Organic. Zero seed oils. Zero grains. Zero sugar. Grass fed, wild caught, free range meats. Vit D level 87.5. Supplement Vit K. Physically acvtive. I eat 99.9% at home. I use raw dairy (cheese, cream, butter). My doctor gave me an rx for a statin and I told him I would not take it. My cholestrol is high at 257, but that doesn't seem that bad from what I read. Dave feldman offered $$ for the results I have : High Hdl (53), high LDL (183), low trigly. (106) and increasing cardiovascular disease (quadrupled CA heart score). Today I began eating natto.

I get it! Finally. I have watched yours and Dave Feldman’s videos so many times... and I finally get it. I follow a Keto Diet. My total cholesterol is 335, LDL-C 221, HDL-C 75, Triglycerides 195, VLDL-C 39. And my doctor’s answer is to put me on Prevastatin. Based on this explanation of the lipid system, I’m thinking I should eat MORE fat to lower my triglycerides. Correct? Oh, and I’m APOE 4/4. Hi Mega and Matt!

@@Drberg thank you... It's so hard to get a straight answer. I also have similar test results. 283 ldl, 87 hdl, Vldl 15, 75 triglycerides.. 62 year old grandma. But I feel great, don't smoke, blood pressure is good, and last year lost 50 pounds on keto and now am trying to maintain on keto, so very frustrated that my doctor wants to intervine. I really think I'm fine, but I'm going to try to manipulate the ldl for the doctor with 3 days of high fat keto eating and heavy excersise.. hope it works.

The .8 r score is unreal, he’s tied 64% of all variance in LDL directly to diet.

Thank you Doc. Truly you’re a bigggg help to teach all these veryyyy informative things that no one, even our PCP has not given time to teach us. Thank you. Doctors nowadays are just a script pad and prescription, it’s scary to even complain of anything otherwise that’s another drug to take.

This is a long and fairly complex presentation which I will have to watch a few time to fully understand. What I found amazing is that the first time I saw my nutritionist to verify what I could do to reduce my ldl cholesterol level and also loose some fat around my waste the first thing she told me is to reduce my bread consumption and increase my fruits and vegetables consumption. Eating a lot of bread is what Dave did to gain fat. I have once again reduced to a minimum the amount of bread that I am eating and I am melting like butter around my waste. What I find unfortunate is that loosing weight around the waste is not directly correlate to cholesterol level as it is much easier to measure then cholesterol level from a blood sample analysis. Please let me know if cholesterol level can be correlated to other symptômes easier to measure.

  • @sutters7251

    Reading were
    Chol - 7.58
    HDL - 2.10
    Trig -0.67
    Calc LDL - 5.18
    Tc/HDL - 3.6
I’ve Just had my medical at work. I know these are uk figures but I’ve been told to visit my doctor as I may need statins The other advice is to take sterols. I’m 49 (male) I fast (20/4 IF) I run 20km per week for general fitness. I feel like I may have been given bad advice. Any comments or advice?

I think "vegans" and the like will question the LDL under and over 170. They would say BOTH are high, so of course they show nearly the same amount of problems. I am playing devils advocate, because I was nearly vegan for 3 years. Then my nails got weak and broke constantly, my hair got thin, my veins got bad etc etc so I went back to meat and eggs. It has been about 4 or 5 months - still recuperating!!

Why not just supplement with B12 and be a vegetarian? That way at least you can have fish or eggs if you want but you wouldn't be supporting the factory farms and animal cruelty? I don't eat mammals or birds and I am very healthy now for decades, ever since reading about the factory farms in my teens. Vegetarian is a good option for people who want to be healthy and care for animals and the environment as well.
