Any of the greats of that era, Bird, Erving, Magic, Thomas, Jordan, etc. would tell you Michael Ray Richardson was an elite player. As far as great players in the New York metropolitan area in the early 80s, he and Bernard King were the best. ,
sugar ray was the real deal you see in the clip how easily he picked jordans pocket.this guy was a superb defender had open court instincts just like magic Johnson. I got the opportunity to see Michael ray play when he was in the United states basketball league which his team featured the first female to play in a mens organize league nancy Lieberman .Michael ray was right up there with any of the best guards in the league during his time.
Before the off the court issues I thought he was the best point guard in the NBA, even better than Magic Johnson because he was a great two way player and he is very committed on Defense.
One of the best all time.....I show my kids his highlights...Downtown Freddie Brown, World B. Free, all the other forgotten greats too. Pistol Pete, Adrian Dantley, Alex English.....i miss the NBA back then
TH-cam just added a game from March of1981 where the Knicks had a convincing win over the 76ers at Madison Square Garden when Micheal Ray Richardson and Ray Williams both had great games. If the Knicks had been able to keep them together and if Toby Knight hadn't blown his knee out they could have been something nice well into the 80s.
Michael Ray Richardson had a very good NBA career and he was very similar to Walt "Clyde" Frazier and Gary Payton type of player in the NBA but his downfall was substance abuse
He didnt ruin his career he played overseas and was a great success he played til he was like 43 and hes living a clean life now.... the sun doesn't rise or set on The nba.... he had his demons but he still maintained.... and yeah he was ousted by the nba after the 3rd drug test
He was pretty darn good, not quite great or worth drooling over. Not much of a scorer, not great volume, not great efficiency. I mean he was very talented, and a great physical specimen for a point guard. But like Ralph Sampson people see the potential and extrapolate that well beyond what he actually was.

Iam 62 yrs old and he sugar ray is by far my favorite player of all time, then bernard king, and then drazan petrovic
Drugs killed his career sad
One of the best all time....loved watching Fred Brown too....downtown freddie brown, oh yeah
M.R.R. and Ray Williams where on the same time amazing. Love M.R.R. with Nets schooling his old team.
Isiah Thomas said he was afraid of Sugar Ray. Couldn't stop him on any night...

Superb anticipator, excellent quickness, and more.
holly crap nba in the late 70's and 80's was tight!
My boy would shine in today's NBA. No BS Sugar Ray would easily make my All Time team. Absolute kryptonite to any point guard you name.
I wore #20 because of him!
He was an amazing player. Sad to see his career cut tho :(
Me too #20 was my fave #and Micheal Richardson rep it well .20 looks good on a hybrid shooting guard or dynamic point guard 1 thru the 3spot IMO
Sugar Ray was great
Michael Ray Richardson is the closest player I've ever seen to Magic Johnson. On the fast break, like Magic, he was completely unstoppable!
Almost recorded a quadruple double with the Warriors on Feburary 5, 1983 vs. the Spurs.
HE HAD 9 STEALS THAT GAME!!
top 10 quickest nba players all time
Hes my school gym coach

Lo ricordiamo a Livorno.. un vero campione
Could guard ANYONE in the history of the NBA!
He could have been the other MICHAEL ppl talked about in the '80s
He was a John Wall during his era
Way better! More like a version of Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird
Yeah better...best at steals I ever saw
Wall is NOWHERE NEAR!
Magic is my favorite player of all but I thought Sugar was every bit as good as him when his head was right.
Just got this guy on my MyTeam on 2K22 glad I found out about him
I know he was a high flyer with the Knicks, but did he dunk with the Nets?
Could have been in the conversation of greatest guards. Drugs destroyed him. total shame.
His son play football with morocco u 23 ❤
Somme people Say he was MJ before MJ .🔥🔥
Michael Ray could have been what Magic Johnson wanted to be OSCAR ROBERTSON!!!!!!!!!
Morocco 🇲🇦♓❤️

2:54. Damn that looked painful...
Mike Ray Don't Play! LoL

The father of AMIR RICHARDSON.. the morrocan foot player.
ابن هذا اللاعب اختار اللعب مع المنتخب المغربي لكرة القدم .. امير ريتشاردسون و هو الان في تربص مع المنتخب المغربي الاولمبي استعدادا لاولمبياد باريس
Unfortunately Richardson came from a home without a father figure.Ond of the reasons for his substance abuse.
Magic kinda patterned his game to Micheal Ray.
If only he had kept his damn nose clean:::deep sigh:::don't do drugs kids, at least the NON-prescribed ones anyway...
;-p
Michael Ray could do it all,
except stay away from the blow.
great career ruined by drugs
Same calibre as Larry, and Magic but he just ruined his career
He didnt ruin his career he played overseas and was a great success he played til he was like 43 and hes living a clean life now.... the sun doesn't rise or set on The nba.... he had his demons but he still maintained.... and yeah he was ousted by the nba after the 3rd drug test
