Toney and Magic Johnson were prototypes for guards in the future. Tall, quick, great outside shot, could play point or small power forward, strong defender.
If Andrew Toney's career was not stopped by injury the 1983 Sixers would have had 5 hall of famers. (Moses, Doc, Cheeks, Bobby Jones) To those who think that only the Celtics and Lakers existed in the 80s, I'm telling you this team was the best team of that decade.
When they got Moses, they were the best team, no doubt.. That was the best team of the 80’s, even better than the 86 Celtics... Who often are discussed in the greatest team ever conversation..
@@jacobjones5269 Yes they would have run that old slow team out of the building and that team was possessed. Still they get virtually no credit for it because it wasn't Boston or LA.
Andrew Toney was the real deal truth sticking it in everybody’s face relentlessly and he just kept coming at cha he was just diggen in all competition there was just no stopping him and don’t let Toney get on a roll it’s lights out . Yeah they should call him lights out Toney cuz that what it was for opponents when he got on a roll LIGHTS OUT !!! One of my favorite players ever and I miss him Peace Andrew Toney !!!
All-Time Bucks great Sidney Moncrief himself said this guy was the toughest defensive assignment he ever had during his prime years, mainly because he had an offensive counter for just about every defensive scheme thrown at him. What also goes unnoticed is how solidly built Toney was (look at how he bumps Bird out of the lane with relative ease on his way to the hoop in that upload, lol). Unusually strong for his size and LOVED sticking the dagger in the opposition every chance he got. Tragic that a serious foot injury put the brakes on what would've been a certified HOF career for him. Sixers management should've just let him take the whole season off just to heal up properly, but what did they know about such injuries back then:::sigh:::
Remember Andrew Toney well and loved what he brought to the court. Speed, quickness, power, athleticism. Wasn't a big fan of his shooting form, but he made it work. A spark plug out there for sure. Career cut short, but videos like this help preserve his basketball memory.
I watched players like Magic,Bird,Jordan,Kareem. You are right. If Andrew Toney's name comes up it is like who is this guy. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I think with the therapeutic help we have now he could have been a major super star.
Incredible body control - always seemed squared to the basket. An absolute nightmare to defend. If he was traded to the Celtics they would never have lost a final.
Andrew played his last college game against Kevin McHale's U. of Minnesota in the NIT tournament. U of M won. He finished college in 3 years and enrolled in graduate school his last year to stay eligible.
One of my favorite players of all time. He was so damn fast. And, his shot was pure gold. Dude was a fuckin monster. Damn shame Philly's doctors and management failed to believe him when he started complaining of foot problems. They ruined what could have and should have been a hall of fame career.
Thanks to him, the 1980s had an incredible rivalry between Philadelphia and Boston. Sadly, a chronic foot injury derailed his career in 1985. He was never the same afterwards.
@@veoshock3792 I have always maintained that it was the shoes at that time. I remember buying my first Nike's after owning Adidas(never played as much in them) and Converse. I was playing 5 times a week at lunch. I turned to a friend who had the same shoes and I asked him if his feet hurt and he said to me "my feet are killing me". Those early shoes did not absorb the shock of jumping. There was a rash of broken feet at the time( Jordan, Toney and Walton)
Instant Offense Coffee. Yeah, Boston, L.A, Milwaukee and everybody else inbetween. Gave the defense fits. Eased the pressure on the Doc to score. 1983 unstoppable Sixers.
He was truly a great basketball player. He just didn't play very long because I think of bone spurs. He was every bit as talented as Michael Jordan. He gave the great Celtic sometimes more than they could handle. When he was hot, he was unstoppable.
Today NBA Comp: Desmond Bane/Norman Powell Andrew Toney in today’s NBA would’ve been that great piece to have come playoffs time when the game slows down. Definitely a 15-20 ppg scorer in todays game. Very good midrange scorer, physically strong and good ball handler whose value really would shine during the playoffs.
You gotta love a smaller guy throwing his weight around, living amongst the trees... And when he heated up, it was over.. lol.. Played great defense, could lead or finish on the break.. What a player..
Hard to believe all the people in the HOF and this guy is not. For about 7 years he was better at basketball than most people that are enshrined there.
He was the of the few, if any, Sixers who was an outside shooting threat for the Sixers in that era. Cheeks, Hollins, Doc, and the others weren't reliable outside 12-15 feet.
As a Celtics fan, he was scary. DJ would have neutralized him some if he remained healthy. It's also too bad we didn't get to see him go against Jordan for a couple of years.

Randy Axelrod I see your point, but the facts show Lakers 5 rings in 80's, 5 is better than 1!
BTW, here cause Andrew Toney top 10,20 one of best i ever saw in 45 yrs. checking the NBA!
Agree with the HOF claim, but Doc and Moses primes together were dwindling. The Celts and Lakers were just honestly better stacked.

My Andrew Toney jersey arrives in a few days. The first one I've ever bought 😊
I am a Lakers fan and every time Andrew Toney entered a game I knew Lakers were in trouble.

PeekaPeep pretty much sums it up he was stone-cold, the total package! I'm a Laker fan Coop/magic/nixon couldn't keep up w/him!
yes he was really strong and routinely posted up big men in the low post
They did him dirty
Michael Cooper, Bird and Ainge all said the same thing

Andrew Toney was a beast and to be his size was hard to guard

Gregory Klein Bird in a interview said that he feared Toney more than Michael Jordan.
D.Love .. Yeah you are right I saw that on utube..
@@gregoryklein3311 Yes Bird did a interview with former teammate Kevin McHale about Toney.
Great player and an amazing shooting guard. Also,he and his family are just great people to know.
His jump shot has the highest point of release we’ve ever seen. It’s his signature move.

I forgot to mention he WAS actually a superstar.

Great Player wish he stayed healthy. The most talked about feet in the history of Philadelphia.

Thanks to him, the 1980s had an incredible rivalry between Philadelphia and Boston.

Yea it is sad that he couldn't have a longer NBA career due to injuries. No doubt he would have made the HOF imo.

I loved Dr. J….but Andrew was my guy!!, had the nicest jump shot and was just unstoppable. 1983 Sixers…best team ever.
Andrew Toney used to kill the Boston Celtics back in the day! Danny Ainge, M.L. Carr, Chris Ford, all used to catch hell trying to guard him.
Thanks for this -- great look at a forgotten PHI Legend! 🏀🔥🔥
Andrew Toney could shoot the lights out in any arena!!!!
The Real Boston Strangler , and the sixers didnt show no love after he was done.
Very good repertoire. Jumpers, floaters, reverse layups, assists, and shots in traffic well defended. He could do it all.
One of my all time favorite players

Toney gave the Sixer's a nice shooter to go with Cheeks. The Sixers,Celtics, and Bucks were really competitive in the East back then.
Get out the way, Bird
Kinda sad he recluse and doesnt come back to Sixers games and Philly like a lot of other players. I know Harold Katz pissed him off but hes long gone
What a Great 👍🏿 offensive player could you imagine him in today’s game

He seems like 80s version of Bradley Beal!
Tried to emulate his 2-handed jump shot release as a kid
He came bacc as Shake Milton

Anyone here from Bill Simmons Book of Basketball?
not Book of Basketball, but he complimented Toney a lot on his recent pods. he said that Toney was a lot like D Book is rn
Yeah im here as well to see if his game looks similiar to Booker. That one leaner looked just like Devin's. Bucks in 6 !!
Honestly. an embarrassment his number hasn't been retired by the Sixers.
Seriously, Gilbert Arenas before Agent Zero....
