Melamime is, in fact, what magic erasers are made of. And I think it‘s safe to assume that by now, every detailer should know that magic erasers are in fact abrasive.
Here‘s a fun fact: whereas most people and professional detailers will religiously follow very strict routines to treat a car‘s paint as gentle as possible, they then treat leather incredibly brutal. Why? Because they have learnt that a car‘s paint can be delicate and they don‘t want to introduce (micro) scratches. Also, when polishing paint, detailers know that they‘ll remove clear coat so they try to remove as little as possible.
Car interiors on the other hand have received far less attention and most of the times only need to be clean - no matter what.
Most detailers simply don‘t know or accept the simple truth which is: leather is actually a MUCH more delicate material than a car‘s paint and should therefore be treated with equal if not bigger respect as paint because leather can be SERIOUSLY, IMMEDIATELY and IRREVERSIBLY damaged by the wrong tools and techniques!
The most important aspect in this regard to take away is this: leather is „built“ in a very similar way as paint is: there‘s the actual cow skin (body), then there‘s a primer layer, then there‘s the actual colour layer, and then there‘s the top coat (clear coat). Leather‘s top coat is what you‘re typically and 90% of times are cleaning and treating as most leathers in most modern cars are probably pigmented leathers or synthetic leathers. And this top coat is much, much more delicate than the clear coat of your paint. And think how careful you treat that! The top coat is the final layer that‘s applied and has to fulfill several tasks, amongst others:
1. Anti-soiling (dirt- absorbent)
2. Anti-aging for the rest of the leather layers
3. UV-protection
4. Protection from microorganisms
5. Protection from abrasion
Once the leather‘s top coat is damaged or removed, it cannot do its job anymore. Which is why once you induced a damage to the top coat, a repair job is THE ONLY WAY to regain the top coat‘s original characteristics. No „conditioner“, no protector, and no coating will be able to replicate what the top coat does! And once the top coat is attacked, damaged or removed, the rest of the leather layers will see a rapid degradation as the top coat is the only layer with at least some sort of resistance and hardness to it.
But here‘s the thing: damaged leather from a damaged top coat looks clean at first. There‘s almost no way of initially telling that the top coat is gone. However, if cleaned leather gets shiny again rather quickly and if cleaned leather feels sticky, then those are clear signs that the top coat is attacked or gone. A very clear sign for damaged leather is if you e.g. clean red or brown leather and you end up with red or brown "stuff" in the towels, then you either went through the top coat (which is the equivalent of polishing paint and having coloured residue in your polishing pads) or someone cheaply, quickly and badly „repaired“ this leather before you cleaned it and what you see in your towels is leather colour from such a repair job.
By using a magic eraser, you are removing top coat. Magic erasers are abrasive, so there simply and physically isn‘t possible to use them in a non-abrasive manner. Yes, using them softly or lightly means that they are less abrasive than when used aggressively, but they are abrasive nontheless.
So, by using a magic eraser on leather, you are in fact damaging that leather. To be exact, you‘re damaging the top coat. The issue is that noone of us knows how much damage you‘re inflicting, how much top coat you‘re removing and how bad that is. That‘s why you said that you‘ve done it a thousand times and never damaged leather - because you simply can‘t see the damage you‘ve done.
The following video is in German, but I think you‘ll quickly see what it is about: it‘s an experiment in which leather is treated with a magic eraser, the traditional leather brush, and a specialized leather cleaning sponge. What you‘ll see in the video is that it takes SECONDS to go through the top coat with a magoc eraser, and even the leather cleaning brush is extremely aggressive:

If you still don‘t believe me then by all means, go ahead and continue using magic erasers. I just hope that no customer ever sees this and knows about leather, because then you‘re looking at a serious insurance claim or law suit.

Exactly. Automotive leather is coated. I use rinseless wash such as ONR or DIY diluted in a spray bottle for routine cleaning. It’s very gentle. Melamine is aggressive, I’ll use it on glass only.
Are the scrub ninja's (or equivalent) white side made of melamine? They don't feel like it, and Google suggests not. Are they too much for leather?

@@pigeonpoo1823 Scrub Ninjas are some sort of microfiber I believe. I have used it on leather but don’t use too much pressure and do a test spot first, it may not be safe for all.

Jamie, thanks for your reviews. My go to clean very dirty steering wheels is a spray disinfectant/degreaser and steam if necessary. To clean leather seats, is a mild dilutable soap, with a colour lock leather brush if needed? Both products are very reasonable priced and available almost anywhere.

I like the scrub ninja on tough and more synthetic feeling leather. Thin, soft natural leathers like on BMW M steering wheels I stick with gentle stuff and microfiber.
I need them Lithium Cubes for my steering wheel. It looked amazing after you went over it with them.
Don‘t do it and don‘t use them, they are abrasive and will damage leather!

Those are good but honestly Koch Chemie ASC and/or rinseless wash does a good job itself and is much more economical. Only if you have seriously bad leather do you need more. ASC is good at degreasing.

Yes.. We don't use any illegal chemistry in the creation of our products. Also, PFAS aren't the only chemicals one should be worried about.

@OraEtLabora0 Most cleaning products don’t have PFAS in them. PFAS are essentially fluorocarbons used in the production of fluoropolymers. They are not the fluoropolymers themselves but remnants from mfg. You will mainly encounter them in some ceramic coatings, sealants, and hybrid waxes. There is no way to know if they are present unless the manufacturer states it. Especially any product that says it contains PTFE. They are not presently required to be listed on the SDS.

@@JamieTheCleaner the two little displays for seatbelt for passengers aren’t clear anymore. They turned a cloudy haze that doesn’t buff off. I never sprayed any chemicals directly on them, always on the microfiber towel. It’s not a huge deal, I don’t want to make it worse or have it hurt something else. The car is 6 months old
