    Welcome to Marks Mini Cooper S Mk3 build in 1970 and registered in 1971. This Cooper S was last restored in 1997 and had featured in Mini World magazine. Unfortunately 23 years down the line and it's looking tired in some areas so Mark has decided to take it off the road for a full restoration which will involve stripping it back to a bare shell, sandblasting, and a respray. Fortunately, the engine has already been restored recently by Swiftune engineering
    In this update, Mark removes the clutch assembly and flywheel so he can replace the rear main oil seal

    "I hate doing things a week after I've taken something apart..." I'm at the stage your at, 4 years after pulling the engine off the gearbox and breaking it down to as many bits as there are, well almost. 😥 I feel you pain. Thanks for the video.

    I use an old shell bearing to lock the flywheel. Sits nicely into the housing and let's you use both hands on the breaker bar.

      I was thinking that i could just use an old starter motor. Would that work?

    Hi Mark, yeah I did pretty much the same thing lol regards to fitting the seal... Although I used a homemade version first, and it had fitted flush, it had rolled the lip on the inside and popped the retaining spring out! So I bought the proper one, and it hasn't leaked since!! It's all a learning curve hey 😂 Great stuff 😊

      I did actually try fitting it without the tool and the same thing happened to me. That's why i bought the correct tool in the end. 😅 Everyday is a school day! 😎

    yes Mark a huge learning curve if you have never done a clutch oil seal ect

      First time for everything. Frustrating that it takes me so long but i still enjoy it and learning.

    A bit late but what I do for the oil seal (even when building an engine) is pull the primary gear out slightly so you can see the ledge of the surface the seal seats around. Slip the seal around that ledge, push it up to the outer housing and tap around the seal edge to press it home. The gear will probably slide back in as you do so make sure the seal remains on that machined ledge as you tap it home.
    There is a thrust bearing behind the gear but the oil usually keeps it stuck to the crankshaft shoulder.
    Never used an oil seal tool and I always take the whole clutch / flywheel assembly out as one unit with the 3 leg puller and disassemble on the bench.
    Every day is a school day mate. Frustrating but its the only way to know how. But you got it done. That is all that counts.

      Pulling the primary gear out is above my pay grade 😂, I'll leave that to the professionals, but thanks for the advice. I'm sure i'll get more confidence as i do more, but i feel nervous the first time doing stuff like this. God i hope that seal doesn't leak when i start it up! 😅

      @@markdraper7 Its OK if it leaks. Its what the little split pin in the bottom of the flywheel housing is for!

      @@1chish, Did you know i hate oil leaks? 😂 My Swiftune Race Engine doesn't leak so that's my yard stick. 😅 I have noticed my ERA engine leaking from the split pin though! oh god! 😂

      @@markdraper7 Probably says it and shouldn't but I have never had an oil leak from any engine I have built be that rally Twin Cams, BDAs or bog standard Minis.
      Had a small leak from a Scania 16 litre V8 I rebuilt but that was from the gearbox .. 🤣
      My OCD can't cope with oil leaks 😒

    Take it you lock-tabbed the big flywheel bolt bud? Did a good job for a first time, the bit of kit for holding flywheel is handy, but i still havent got round to making one myself 😊

    • @markdraper7
      @markdraper7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See, i noticed that in the manual, but i looked back on when i took it all off and there wasn't a lock tab on it to start with! Thanks Dean, yes, i'll make one for the next time once my welding is up to scratch. 😅

    Dude.. your clutch, etc looks wonderfully different than mine. Is that Oil Seal tool P/N CE12 from Mini Spares? I had no idea about this tool either... I just removed the core plugs and filmed it.. it's easy. I wish I could find brass core plugs. We develop confidence by doing and you are always "doing".. you're awesome dude..

    • @markdraper7
      @markdraper7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe mine is a pre verto clutch and you must have a verto clutch? I got the oil seal tool from P and L minis, item code was CE12.
      I'll have a butchers at your video, it might increase my confidence 😀That's the best way to learn, try, make mistakes and learn from them. Cheers Randy, you are also awesome! 😎

    Hi just seen your video, before the flywheel go on there should be a plastic washer which fit to the spines to help protect the oil seal from clutch dust ingress. Sorry to say but have just rebuild my gt1275 and do not want you get it back in car and the seal co not last long.

    • @markdraper7
      @markdraper7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, there wasn't one on it when i took it off so it's gone back together as when Swiftune originally rebuilt it. 😎

      @@markdraper7 ok I have always fitted them to help protect the seal from the dust as I was advised by my engine machine shop TWM in Norfolk.

    I've really been enjoying your videos. They have made me actually want to have a classic Mini of my own. But I wanted to mention something about torque wrenches. When tightening, place your hand on the GRIP ONLY. The wrench measures the torque by sensing the bend in the entire handle. If you grip it below the handle or add an extension bar for more leverage, you will get a false torque reading. Great job on the videos!

    • @markdraper7
      @markdraper7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bill! You know, it makes me feel good that it might inspire others to want to own a mini and try this stuff. Just make sure you have fairly deep pockets 😂
      Thanks and noted about the torque wrench. I've never given it much thought before but makes perfect sense. cheers! 😎

    Having oil seals leak oil on your clutch is bad, you may need to replace your clutch if the contamination is too bad. Consult Paul Jeffries.
