I used to work at Mr Clutch. We used to do 3 or 4 of these mini clutches a week as well as replacing the reverse idler bushes. I changed my puller so they all had 19 mm heads so the 3 long bolts & the centre bolt, I also had a mini starter motor gear which had a small pieces of plate welded on the back & front to stop it falling off & it worked perfectly as the fly wheel lock. I remember working on a Sierra sapphire cosworth replica which a 18 year old kids father brought in for a new clutch. This kid had built this replica which he started putting together from 16 after saving up his paper rounds money & every odd job he ever did bare in mind every part he bought came from scrap yards he & his father visited together & from exchange & mart magazines for sale & wanted section this was before the days of eBay. His dad brought it in as a surprise as his son had joined the army and hadn't even driven it. Those were the days . .
I'm sitting here watching you torque on the puller thinking to myself "does he know? Does he have steel toe shoes? He must know!" They fire right off when they go bang 🤣 Mine was soooo stuck. Heat, impact, bent a cheap puller, all the cheats and still nothing. Heated her up, left tension on the puller and went to sleep. Went bang in the night on me and only dented the floor a little bit.
You need to put the engine at TDC or the "C" clip can drop ond jam behind the flywheel, also a spanner wedged into the teeth of the flywheel will lock the engine and also tap the flywheel through the starter hole to release it
I’ve never done this either, I have read you can take the washer out and put the bolt back in a couple of turns to stop it falling to the floor. Great work as always mate 👌🏻
@@markpiper8082 Valid point. The bolt certainly certainly needs to be screwed back in more than 2 turns. I wind in as far as it will go then back off 2 turns.
Verto flywheels are great fun to remove aren't they, I'm surprised it came off with that lazer puller as they normally break, I use a minispares puller, its brilliant, I also use my rattle gun on the puller bolt as well, it usually takes me less than 10 seconds to remove a flywheel with that, also, if you do take the flywheel apart to check or replace the clutch then it should be re balanced afterwards, great update though 👍
I'm sure this job caused some perspiration. I have to do this on my Cooper rebuild this winter, so thank you for this video to show what a struggle it can be. Is'nt there a recommendation to orintate the flywheel before removing so that the Primary Gear C Ring does'nt drop & jam the flywheel ?
Hi As the title says, it was to remove the Verto clutch - But, this was removing the flywheel as well as you would do if it was a pre-Verto clutch. I have never done a clutch change on the Verto clutch but assumed that the clutch could be replaced like other cars without removing the flywheel.
There are differences, different arms at the slave cylinder, different bearing and clutch is attached slightly different with bolt formation. The assembly needs a puller to get it off as its on a taper
@@DBMiniDIY The reason why I watched your video, is because I thought I was going to have to change a friends clutch and I wanted to be aware of any changes to the procedure with it being a Verto 180mm clutch and hoped it was going to be quicker by not having to remove the flywheel - (as it turned out, the slipping clutch was due to the thrust bearing shaft seized in the cover)
Hello. Wonderful as always. Did you put it into TDC before using the puller? The flywheel puller instructions from MiniSpares refer to TDC as step 1. I'm doing this with the engine still in the car. Who needs knuckle skin?!
@@DBMiniDIY If you put the flywheel bolt back in without the keyed washer and pull against the bolt head, it can't fly off. You won't damage the threads in the crank.
Hi just wondering if anybody can help i have a 1989 mini and looking and buying engine for have seen an A series 998 with a 1275 head for sale will it fit and go on my gearbox

Nice one DB I'm glad you got it off without damage or injury to yourself. Tough job!

Loving the puller DB. I might need to borrow it when I'm at that stage :)
No probs mate
Nice one, you’re getting through the engine strip pretty sharp. I thought that flywheel was on for keeps lol👍
The suspense...! Nice job with the locking tool :-)
Thanks mate

Cheers mate, yeah that would be the most sensible way, luckily there was no damage caused
@@DBMiniDIY i wouldnt that as it puts the wrong pressure on the threads and could damage the crank
Exactly the method I learned. Then the assembly can't fly off and cause damage / injury, They always break away from the taper somewhat violently.

New pants for Mr DB lol good job !

BANG! And the clutch is gone! Who do you think you are mate? Barry Scott? 😂😂😂👍👍👍🇬🇧
Lol Barry scott never jumped as high as i did😂
is there a reluctor ring on these flywheel / verto clutch assemblies?
now that looks like something that would happen to me.... a good startle for sure....

Hi just wandering my1991mini have just started to crunch when putting in gear . Any ideas ?
If its all gears its likely a problem with the clutch or clutch hydraulics if its only certain gears its likely the gearbox (syncromesh etc)
@@DBMiniDIY hi it's all the gears I'll have a look at hydraulic. Many thanks
@@user-hp5fz3qs1u that good news then, a lot cheaper and easier fix👍

Ooo-wee that even gave me a jump n i'm 5000mile away, lol.
Lol, it took years off me
Hi. Really good video, but can you show what you suspended your engine on?
Thanks, its on an engine stand, you can see the stand and adapter plate i used in this video

How do I remove the housing I've got a bit stuck! Does the brake master cylinder have to come off? And how does the clutch arm come off?
The slave cylinder will ckme off with the bolts and tbe arm is attached with a pin
Bloody hell!!! that was tight, jumped out of my skin then ha ha

Yes i used a 30mm
