- Here is the great French ballerina, and superstar nite-club chanteuse Zizi Jeanmaire in her signature role of CARMEN. Choreographed for her by her husband choreographer Roland Petit, both were icons of the French ballet and Music Hall world's. Jeanmaire also appeared in several 1950's high profile Hollywood films co-starring with Bing Crosby, Mitzi Gaynor, Donald O'Conner, and Danny Kaye.

I love Zizi Jeanmarie's dancing. She was so chic.
Zizi and Roland were the magic needed to create this passionate and groundbreaking pas de deux. I was 18 when I first saw his pas de deux performed by Denis Ganio and Elisabetta Terabust in Estoril, Portugal. With a group of American corps de ballet performing, the soloists were great European dancers who we watched in awe. Ganio was Roland Petit's protege who we saw rehearsing and performing this pas de deux in Lisbon. Ganio remains Petit's greatest protege and he married married Dominique Khalfouni and now their son, Matthieu . All became superb technical and artistic performers who carry on Petit's legacy and are creating one of their own! What a gift I was given to spend my summer (1973) with this large ensemble before moving on to study at TCU (Texas), continuing to grow in both artistic and technical prowess.
Wow, I've never seen a ballerina demonstrate such superb acting skills alongside excellent dancing technique.
The role was perfect for her. She portrays Carmen's character as a sexy temptress with abandonment as well as great technique. C💝💝💝

Every movement has a meaning. Very different meaning that the one given by all the following interprets. Much more nuances, tastes.

I dug this out after a performance by the Scottish ballet - a street cat named desire. What a difference! Here sex scene danced elegantly, pleasurable for both, while passion and violence just right. In the Scottish ballet (well reviewed!) the sex was ugly without any grace, women treated victims one dimensional no character at all, as opposed to here carman is a spirited girl who knows what she wants. They don’t make such anymore! What a pity!
Zizi was AMAZING.
I've seen this movie dozens of times. Love it! That solo she dances is _so_ _sexy_ !!
