Just think...when Roland Petit first choreographed this ballet for Jeanmaire in 1949, Misha was probably still wearing *diapers* (depending on the source, he was born in either 1947 or 1948).

You have to admit it's pretty amazing that Jeanmaire was still able to dance so well at around 56 when most dancers have been forced to throw in the towel at least a decade before that. She was born in 1924 and this was recorded for broadcast in 1980. Besides, this role was created for her and I find it hard to imagine anyone else performing it with quite the same level of verve that she did. Actually, I think the fact that she was older than Baryshnikov was made it interesting since it adds a new twist to the plot -- seductive and experienced older woman bewitches but also deceives naive yet hot-blooded younger man and leads him to ruin.
@@OreadNYC I can only watch two performances of Carmen - 1960 with Petit himself and 1980 with Baryshnikov (the other versions do not hold up, but I liked the short excerpt with Ferry). In 1960, Jose is a mature man caught in the net of a young beauty Carmen, and in 1980, on the contrary, young Jose is fascinated by a mature Carmen - an interesting coup turned out )) Jose in the performance of Misha this is something amazing, but I think they look very organic here with Zizi... it would be interesting to see a recording of the ballet that they did with Makarova in 1981, but alas, so far I have only seen pictures (
