I've been in Johannesburg for 21 yrs, after been born and raised in Durban. I love Durban, but really love Joburg as well. They are 2 different cities. Durban more laid back, Joburg a more vibrant cosmopolitan city. Most people who move jo Joburg are more career driven. Definitely my 2 favourite South African cities 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

Royston Sanders I commute to Johannesburg from Pretoria daily for work. I have been doing that for 2 years and I enjoy Johannesburg to the core, but I am due to transfer to Pretoria and that means less driving for me. Jo'burg is more live and vibrant. Mzansi for sure ! 🇿🇦🇿🇦🎷

Jermaine, my wife and I just happened to stumble upon your videos and we subscribed. We love your videos and we totally agree with you. We've been to Cape Town, Joburg and Durban. We just felt at home in Durban. The food, the people, the scenery, all beautiful! Didn't get the same feeling in Cape Town and there was so much hype around it too. Durban is the most slept on place in my opinion.

I've been watching your vlogs because as a South African I have a vested interest in what you have to say. I've noticed that you prefer to travel to the less popular more grungy places and that's fine because that's the type of experience you're seeking. But you should also realize that the more upmarket/ "'touristy" areas that you seem so dismissive of, are a part of South Africa as well. Normal South Africans live and operate in these spaces as well, they are not just for tourists. I am a black South African and I would be reluctant to go to some of the areas you have visited because I wouldn't feel safe or comfortable. It almost seems as if you are disappointed by the upmarket areas of South Africa because they might not match your expectations of what a developing African nation should be; however, as a travel vlogger I feel that you should show all sides of the countries you visit for what they are.

Jermaine, thank you for this!!! I’m currently in Cape Town and looking forward to making it over to Durban. Someone in my hostel dorm was kind of trashing it the other day and she pissed me off even though I’ve never even been there LOL! I suspect her underlying reasons for not feeling it were similar to those of your friends.
Also, thank you for commenting on how people’s constant commentary on safety in South Africa can really affect the headspace you’re in when you’re visiting a city. I’m finding that I constantly feel stressed in Cape Town, and it feels like a lot if it is the anxiety people force down your throat. (I’m also a solo female traveler.) I understand they mean well, but it really is true that the only things people say to you are about how you will be robbed and raped and murdered and raped again. It’s interesting how the warnings also become their own form of aggression and hostility. But again, I understand that people just want to make sure you’re watching out for yourself.

In Joburg you definitely needed someone who knows the place to take you around. Its a very large city with so much to do. E.g. when you went to the Carlton Centre, had there been a local with you, they would have told you to go up to the 50th floor. The highest public viewing place anywhere in Africa. Its only R30. The views are amazing. You get to see the entire Joburg. To see the much more wealthier places in Joburg I recommend you take the Gautrain to Rosebank & Sandton (where you'll get to visit the Nelson Mandela Square & lots of opulent stores) . In Rosebank you also get an opportunity to hop onto one of those Red double decker rooftop tour buses that will take you allover Joburg with the history of the city being explained to you. Also visit Monte Casino located in Fourways(the north). Visit the place at night if you want the best experience. Tons and Tons of restaurants there. Lastly I'll recommend you visit Gold Reef City Theme park in the South of the city. Again, if you love shopping you're at the right city. Joburg has more shopping malls than many other 1st world cities combined. It's a fact, google it. It's also worth taking the same train (Gautrain) North to Pretoria (Capital city of SA). Its cleaner and way less congested than Joburg. Its only 50km away from Joburg and takes about 35min on the Gautrain. When you get there you can take an Uber to the Union Buildings (Seat of Government) and also maybe Menlyn Mall(largest in the country).

You can't perceive the risk of crime by just walking around. These judgments should be made based on statistics which are available online. I don't recall with precision but as best I can remember Durban was every bit as dangerous as Johannesburg. Full disclosure - never been to Durban.

Exactly who gets robbed in Joburg the wealthy? South Africa is the richest country on the African Continent. Johannesburg is the richest city. Kinda surprised you were uncomfortable. It's the San Francisco, and New York of South Africa. So if feel comfortable in these two cities why not there. I would question the information and the person giving the information.
Give it another try at a later date maybe connect with a local African tour guide or someone local who knows the culture to show you around that isn't scared that the color of their skin might make them a target.

Nigeria is actually the richest country in Africa using GDP alone but using GDP per capita Equatorial Guinea is the richest country in Africa followed by Seychelles, Mauritius, Gabon, Botswana, Algeria then South Africa.

@@sylviasworld9397 GDP or GDP per capita is western nonsense and its a very poor measure of a country 's actual wealth and prosperity. South africa has the most developed economy and infrastructure on the african continent. South Africa, more than any country on your list, is closest to a developed country on the entire african continent. Its the reason why South Africa, and not Nigetia or Botswana or whoever, is part of the G20. Its the reason why tbey are part of Brix. When Africa needs an africam country to host its first Fifa world Cup, who gets the nod? The onky rugby world cup in africa was staged in South Africa. The only cricket world cup was staged in South Africa. The only country that has hosted formula 1 racing in Africa is South Africa. Where do you think the Olympics would be held? Botswana? Guinea? You know the answer to that. Its no coincidence, the infrastructure in South Africa matches that of the industrialized world. Dont be fooled by GDP. China has the second largest GDP( behind America) but its a poor country compared to Denmark, for example. None of the countries you mentioned are richer than South Africa. None.

Was it not you talking about "that should answer your question about who is richer" is that not a western capitalist concept, even your idea of what is "developed" is a western concept and you will measure it will be by western capitalist standards will you not? Black South Africans are not in Nigeria, but quite a few White ones are. Anyway, I don't wish to waste time here on you talking about a comment from 5 months ago.
