My Grandfather stopped in Durban on his way back to the UK from India after the end of World War II and said that when they left there were guys jumping off the ship into the sea to swim back because they loved it there so much, he wanted to stay too but went home to Cheshire to try and convince my Grandmother to go out there and settle, she didn`t want to...what`s really amusing is that 42 years later my Mom and Dad decided they wanted a better life for myself, my brother and my sister and we moved to Johannesburg, we did have a much better life than we did in the U.K in the early 80`s...what a shame that 34 years after we moved there , had set up a business, employed 38 South Africans, we all ended up leaving due to rampant crime and economic discrimination at the very hands of those Britain put in place to "Save" the country... Back in rainy and cold Cheshire now and hating every minute of it! I`d give my right arm to be sitting on a beach in Kwa Zulu Natal with a cold beer and thoughts of a 1/4 Mutton Bunny for dinner later...
Regardless of what happened in the past that caused you to go back to the UK and that the country; the continent, and the world, in fact, is going through a rough time. Home is where the heart is if you feel there is hope for the place and that things will work out at the end, and that your heart will be at peace. Then go ahead and make KZN your home again!

The happiest days of my life were spent here, and one day soon I shall choose to return to retire and be with the people who've given and shown me more love and care than any other place that I have lived!

Me personally ive had two of my closest friends murdered, ive been hijacked at gun point twice, shot at, mugged 3 times, my house broken into twice. Still love the place though but it is a damn dangerous place.

BTW i lived in California for 4 years and not one of the people i knew there had had any serious issues with crime...however in the USA the cops tend ignore certain areas ( black and poor) and over protect others ( white middle class and rich) BTW way i own restaurants by trade and have had the opportunity to hear many many people’s stories, not only clients but my staff of which i have had many. The worst situation was this one Grill Cook who worked for me who had to give up working because he kept getting mugged and stabbed for his paycheck every Sunday when he got off the Taxi these guys were waiting for him. I was shocked when i saw all his scars. You may have not seen it but im telling you I genuinely dont know a single South African who hasn’t had at least one brush with violent crime. I wish it wasnt so but its my experience of almost 50 years.

The cultures there are clearly quite divided still and don't fit together at all. Nobody smiles in Durban. I felt Johannesburg was a much more united city by comparison.

Great. Durban is my favourite South African city. I have a lot of great childhood memories visiting Durban for the holidays. It's definitely a cultural melting pot. Hope to visit soon. It's been way too long.

I enjoyed this documentary, but it seems as though the African’s living conditions are not nearly as good as the other groups.
