Your beautiful spirit moves my soul brother Jermaine. I'm moved to rediscover my city. I moved to Joburg in 2008 from the UK. The place has a soul of its own - multifaceted. I see what you mean about the snobbish behaviour especially towards and in the North and Northwest of the city. Most commercial cities have a similar heartbeat. I mean Mexico city is the most commercial city in Central America, Sao Paulo in South America, London in Europe and New York City in North America. Those 4 cities arguably provide the most job and business opportunities for their regions. They have no time to be suntanning in the beach in all those places. People are busy hustling, so please do not take it to heart. I love the hustle and bustle as well as the streetwise demeanour I have to assume in all 4. People come from all over to seek opportunities in those cities. Life is not a party.

Let me explain the "safety" game to you. The businesses that cater to the tourist want the tourist to remain within a certain perimeter so they can profit from their patronage. Out of greed, they play off the fears of the tourist and convince them that everywhere else outside the tourist traps are treacherously"unsafe" and should be strictly avoided, ESPECIALLY at night. And of course , security personnel visibly roam the streets within the tourist zones for added effect. That Uber and taxi drivers are in on the scam also because allegedly there are the only "safe" modes of transport. They've got you snookered.
This is the beauty of travel, you learn all these tricks and scams.

Generally how any city with dangerous areas. Panama in Colon (the Carribean side of the Canal), is insanely dangerous. Only the Free Zone is safe there. You can only walk around in that area. Tijuana i think is like that too. They corral the tourist in one area, super safe with tons of cops, but it isn't the real city. Panama City is not as bad, it's actually fairly safe all around. But they have special areas like Casco Viejo (used to be a slum, now gentrified, very nice tourist area, with drug dealers, prostitutes on one street, and 5 star hotels on the next. HUGE police presense, everything is overpriced.

Much like the US. The truth and reconciliation commision is required in that bleeding country. The disparities - educational, social, healthcare - are just too glaring in those 'united' states. As I said before, what separates South Africa from a number of economies is the fact that healthcare is free for the poor. Public schools have free lunches. And the general knowledge of an average South African is quentisentially deeper and wider than that of an American. I said something light yet thought provoking to a white American (ignorant) recently. I said if he's fortunate enough to get on an airplane and set off on an international trip, which is a rarity for Trump's people across the board, yes the one who's totally unrefined and has an orange face which is complemented by a tie. When that ignorant American ( which I'm sure is a pipe dream that will probably never be realised) gets to customs and they ask him where his home is, his response ought to be trashcan somewhere in Idaho. When asked about his date of birth, he needs to respond as such - 1652. Should he be asked about his level of education and general knowledge about the world, he needs to say it's comparable to the narrowness of the Bering Strait. However, he should reassure the customs officer that he is in the process of stretching it. Although he needs to apologise in advance because that process could take a good 300 years. Americans and their 360 degree lack are crude and revolting.

South Africa isn't a developing country. 30-40 years ago, the government was celebrating opening nuclear power plants and car factories that rivalled the best Detroit had to offer. Now the government is celebrating opening outhouses. They're going backwards and have been since the early 2000s after Mandela left.

The government promised former slaves reparations from the start and never followed through. Through the era of reconstruction, that’s the era From the end of slavery to 1900, blacks slowly got to move up in government and owned land but laws were put into place that made it harder for blacks to get and stay in positions of power. Yep, joburg is very unequal. There are areas where you should not carry a phone out while in the car, in downtown jozi, it's called smash and grab. I live in the city and you walk paranoid all the time, especially when you have electronics with you. We went to the Global Citizen Festival with my snobby friends who live in northern joburg and let's just say they had a nightmare after the concert when they forgot where they were. I told them this is the part when you put your phone away if you still want it with you. Then there are smaller towns where it is not as bad, I mean you can walk with a phone in most of Rosebank (Joburg), mostly because it's a suburb so it has a lot of the haves and less of the have nots (Most of the have nots are there to work). I once had an interview in Sandton, which 10 min away from park station in a (gau) train, It feels very different, like you're in Europe, not just the building and atmosphere, but also the streets (level of litter) are so clean. Sandton and Alexander Township are literally neighbours. I won't even talk about driving through saxonwold. We are indeed the most inequal society in the world and joburg shows.

I'm shocked by his experience in Joburg. I've been there from the UK many times and I go everywhere even in the CBD. Nobody is going to mug or rape you it's all perception. The idea that you have to go from "one tourist area" to the other as if island-hopping is just ludicrous - especially for a black guy. lol - I found Joburg to be a huge city with so many areas of interest and diversity. - Stop listening to haters and put down the damn camera and go exploring and you'll see it's not the monster it's wrongly reputed to be.

I haven't read thru the comments but my experience in Joburg,as an American visitor, was totally different. SA as a whole has dangerous parts. This is because of Apartheid, not something innate in Africans! Rosebank is a great area to live/hang in. We had a safe and beautiful time. We met some locals that took us to a day party and an African marketplace that was amazing {don't remember the name :-( }. Compared to where you stayed in Cape Town, Joburg is a bit rough, but you also weren't hanging in Cape Flats, so it is all relative. I love San Francisco and have experienced the same thing. Severe income inequality. In SF, I walked from a nice neighborhood into the next where I saw a man shooting up heroin on the sidewalk! Joburg is dope!! Go visit!

you'll got Joburg all fucked up, it's the new york and L.A ( business and entertainment centre) of SA and one of the best places to live in SA. it's not a coastal city were everything is much more relaxed, it's fast, high energy, " I came here to make something of myself" type of place. it has shitty parts and some of the best parts to explore in all of SA, it's not for everyone! and despite what you've heard about it, it's statistically less dangerous than cape town(which is, along with buffalo city the most dangerous cities in SA) so it's always weird when I see some people you've visited cape town first, then go to joburg and say it's somehow more dangerous, maybe you'll are letting that "relaxed" coastal vibe you just came from, mess with your perceptions. Sure he can walk around in Sandton, which he can't in the CBD but its literally just company headquarters out there. What he wanted to see was people just going about their lives in the city but unfortunately that's not not a pretty site. He should have gone to Soweto instead.

Johannesburg Central Business District (the former inner city) is mostly fucked up. Local Johannesburgers avoid the inner city district like the plague if they can. Actually, it's much safer in many parts of Soweto today, than it is to stay in Central Johannesburg, even though Soweto used to be the most (in-)famous ghetto of the Southern Hemisphere.
Some parts of Johannesburg, like the northern suburbs or Braamfontein (university district) and Maboneng (the renewed, former industrial district that has now become a hip place for the upper middleclass) are quite similar to popular places in the Northern Hemisphere such as California or Western European cities as you correctly said.
When you are in South Africa, you can really witness a third world country and a first world country in one nation. The people you saw dwelling on Johannesburgs streets are mostly migrants, either from poorer African countries such as Zimbabwe, Congo, Nigeria or from the impoverished rural areas within South Africa. Then you have various mafias, like the Nigerian mafia that is involved in drugs and prostitution, Chinese mafia involved in smuggling rhino and elephant horns, some Somalis + Pakistanis + Bangladeshis involved in trading counterfeit goods and a police force that is poorly functional and doesn't have sophisticated methodology to solve crimes. Not to mention the Indian Gupta family that essentially captured the state by bribing and corrupting former President Zuma.
If you really want to understand the whole situation, it would take some studies. But South Africa is extremely inequal in terms of wealth, health and opportunities. You have a small fraction of the population that lives the same life as someone who grews up in the middle class of a western country and then you have many disadvantaged and impoverished people. In some sense it's even worse than it is in poorer African countries, because typically almost everyone has the same standard of living there, while in South Africa you have children growing up in a corrugated iron shack with no water access and no sanitary facilities and in close proximity you have people living in mansions with swimming pools and a car garage for multiple luxury vehicles. So the child grows up knowing that someone else just like him, in the same country, the same city, the same municipality has such an utterly better life, but often there are no venues open to get there.
