    No place like home. When I moved to South Africa from the UK in 2008 I was psyched to see so many people who look like me. I will never leave, my spirit is freer here and I'm not considered exotic.

  • @sicko_the_ew

    I'm pretty sure that pipe is part of the sand pumping scheme.
    The beach sand along that coast tends to drift Northward (longshore drift), so on the other side of the harbour mouth (the Bluff) the tendency is for the sand to form a sand bar across the channel. (There were a few shipwrecks right in the channel in the old days, just because of that bar. It was something feared by sailors.)
    The first solution to the problem was for the harbour authorities to build the two long breakwaters you might have seen if you went all the way up there. So now Bluff sand gets deflected out into deep waters, and doesn't become a problem for ships, and dredging at last became more lasting, instead of one step forward, two steps back (especially in storms - you'd be shocked at how Huge the seas get round Durban when the weather turns rough.)
    Problem with this solution to the problem at the harbour is that longshore drift continued North of the channel. So the Southern beaches were being gradually scoured away, and were becoming narrower just as the number of beachgoers was increasing. So enter the sand pumping scheme. They pump sand/seawater slurry from the Bluff side of the channel, and pipe it to the Southern beaches (there are apparently a few outlets, some of which have fallen into disrepair in more recent times). The beaches you see are much, much wider than the original natural beaches.
    Oh and in the other video you were wondering why people only swim in certain places? Because they're only allowed to swim there. The life savers swim out to the backline in the morning, and figure out where the rip currents are. All along the coast there are periodic rip currents that will pull even the strongest swimmer out to sea. If caught in one, don't try to fight it. You can't win that fight. Any swimming you do must be aimed parallel to the shore, and not landward, and I think it might be safer to just wait. Because the current doesn't exist in a vacuum. At a certain water depth, it circulates round back to shore, so if you just sit there and let the fishes nibble your toes for a while, the same current that dragged you off will bring you back. Or let go of you, and allow you to swim back safely (just aim for the people - they're in the safe spot.)

    You look cool. Hairstyle's awesome🤩 You can try yourself as an actor easily I bet. Thank you for an awesome vlog, that really hurts to hear some things you say about how different it feels in Africa in comparison with back home. My Israeli friends originally from Russia and Ukraine said only going back to Israel makes it feel like home without that even slight but always undercurrent hostility and notice who you are, and constant putting up with usual jokes, stupid abusive phrases ingrown into the language, up to really badly dangerous attude among someone who doesn't have highest IQ. That makes me so frustrated and angry people have to experience that. There's no place like where you can find and feel your roots, that gives you strength, reload and a eagle's point of view. Great vlog! And thank you for your point of view and your way of thinking, that's precious.

    • @prettyinpinky5937
      @prettyinpinky5937 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Brad Smith that report isn't a fact, nor is it accurate. Name 50 people you know who participated in that survey? I mean what parameters did they use, was every demographic from every part of SA included? Besides the fact that European standards vary from that of African, judging by what they looked at on the reports its catering more for a European market. Nothing on there about living an outdoor healthy lifestyle, taking walks to the river, fetching water and cooking over an open fire. That report is subjective if anything so no booboo, not facts. FYI, if you're unhappy.... No one is holding you prisoner here.
