    what ive heard from someone who studied food science, the reason those savers dont do anything is because the ethylene is what triggers the decomposition/ripening process... once it has started it doesnt really matter anymore (at least with bananas)
    and bananas that you buy have already had that process started, so they arent green anymore (they are prevented from maturing before being transported, so they dont go off and then triggered on the last mile so they ripen by the time they are sold)
    not sure about other fruit - but for bananas, thats precisely why that kind of thing does absolutely nothing

    • @Quest723The
      @Quest723The ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Other fruits (plus bananas) you can put them in a paper bag and trap the gas, causing them to ripen faster. So if you're trying to make a peach cobbler by a certain date and your fruit isn't quite ready you can bag them up the day or two before and get more usable ones.
      With bananas if you want to slow the process down, separate them from the cluster so they're not egging on each other's ripening.

    • @SharienGaming
      @SharienGaming ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@Quest723The still does not matter for bananas - the ripening has already started and it happens inside the peel... whatever you do outside has negligible to no influence beyond potentially changing how fast the peel browns...which doesnt really matter for the banana itself
      afaik the best thing you can do to keep fruit fresh for longer is to just store them in a fridge (well not bananas - those funnily enough are better to store at room temp)

    • @poro9084

      @@jellycatfish ...everything can be used with bad intentions. A spoon could. Your hands can kill. That's a really sad outlook on life. You might be surprised, I know I was.

    • @JimiPain
      @JimiPain ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@jellycatfish The thing with this resealers is, that once you open the package they're exposed to air. There is a reason why chip bags aren't fill to the brim other than greediness. They're filled with a gas that preserves them better than air.
      The resealing still helps, though I might think you're better off buying a regular hair straigthner, they go for pretty much the same price, are bigger and heat up quicker.

    • @jellycatfish
      @jellycatfish ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@maromania7 I don't think I have a sad outlook on life, and I wouldn't have mentioned this if someone had not said that this could be used as a pranking tool. Assuming that I might need a psychiatrist because of one TH-cam comment, and that I always see things this way, is kind of rude, and to be honest, hurtful. Of course everything can be used with bad intentions, I've never said otherwise. I am a fan of true crime, and recently watched a video about the Tylenol tampering case in Chicago in the 70s. I guess that's why my brain went that way.

    I think wrapping the fruit was the wrong move. The Saver may absorb gas, but I think it's meant to be kept a bit farther away and not left in direct contact with the fruit it's supposed to be saving. You're still isolating all the gas right there in the bowl instead of drawing it away. It's like you're trying to remove the water from a tub by just dropping a towel in it and see what happens.

    I think it'd be hilarious if y'all could get Alton Brown to come on the show and participate in a game and/or review some gadgets with Ben. • @natwandering
    @natwandering ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I think the ethylene thing could work really well but you should know that some fruit is a heavy ethylene producer whereas other fruit is very ethylene sensitive, so that should be taken into consideration when selecting the fruit and I also wouldn't keep it covered with cling film since that is just a recipe for mould growth. I generally keep the ethylene sensitive produce away from the rest which works just fine, except with berries which just don't survive long unfortunately. would be interesting to see you try this thing out in the fridge as well.

  • @Toonfish_
    @Toonfish_ ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I feel like the sticker test wasn't quite right because I dunno about you but I typically don't cover my fruit bowl in cling film so there's still air circulations which means access to oxygen, gases from the fruit being vented away etc. Maybe the stickers need oxygen to trigger the reaction that captures the ethylene gas or something?
    Also ethylene gas doesn't support the growth of mold as far as I'm aware, it just ripens the fruits, so judging the product on which bowl produced more/less mold doesn't really make sense.
    Other than that, wonderful video! Keep these gadget reviews coming they're always highly entertaining and informative :D

We don't do spice blends (yet), but love being able to fresh grind black pepper, white pepper, all sorts of different rock salts, and even garlic chips and dehydrated onion. There are also stackable trays that hold 3 of the pods each. I have two trays and it's so much fun and convenient to just pop the pod onto the grinder and season as I go.

    I use my vacuum sealer on seal-only mode all the time on chip bags and other plastic bags. It's a great trick if you already have a vacuum sealer, but I'm not sure how good a stand-alone unit like that is.
    The ethylene absorber is interesting, because they work commercially. It's also the reason behind techniques like putting something in a paper bag to ripen it faster - that concentrates the ethylene. I suspect they don't work on all fruit, or it was just left out too long and bacteria started to break it down.

    @2:00 - No. Not absolutely fine for banana bread. If they were a bunch of potatos or other hard roots, or hard cheese, it wouldn't be a problem - you could just cut away the mold (assuming you have 2 inches beyond the last visible bit of mold). With fruits, breads, meats and other soft, moist foods, if you see **ANY** mold at all, the entire piece of food is not safe for human consumption and neither is any other fruits, meats, etc. sealed in the same container with it.
    @8:30 - Huh. Lavazza Rossa coffee. So incredibly bland... (got half a bag of it in a ziplock in the cupboard right now that I haven't touched for like 2 weeks)

    Sorted! Question: Do you lot rinse off your dishes after putting them in soapy water. or no? I've seen Ebbers wash up and he doesn't seem to rinse the soapy residue off of the dish or plate before putting it on the draining board. I've heard that this is a common thing among English people. I've also heard rumors that the habit of NOT rinsing off the dishwater (and any soap bubbles) stems from an old advert for Fairy Liquid that inferred that it wasn't necessary to rinse. Or that it has to do with your taps being either Hot or Cold with no means of getting a mix of the two for warm water from one tap. Hearing Ebbers talk about washing up the bacon pan reminded me to ask this. I'd love to hear what your take on this is.
    As an American, it makes me actually queasy thinking about eating off of plates that haven't been rinsed after they've been in dirty, soapy dishwater.🤢

    professional food packaging worker specializing in plastic sealing here - that heat sealer is fine but for BEST results you're going to want to stick to resealing bags like the Lavazza coffee bag which has a layer of LDPE along the inner layer of the bag - that's a very melty material that works very well for re-sealing. the chocolate bags however, while it'll work it will absolutely mangle your packaging - there's no inner layer along most chocolate bags, you're just trying to melt metallized polyester to metallized polyester - which is fine but isn't as aesthetically appealing, and may not actually generate the kind of air-tight seal that you tend to get with LDPE-lined bags due to the lack of control you have over temperature and dwell time. if you've ever noticed on most chocolate or granola bars, they're not sealed with heat - they're sealed with glue (cold seal), which is another place that i would imagine the re-sealer would fall short.

    • @jellycatfish
      @jellycatfish ปีที่แล้ว

      So basically, a clip might be the best bet for sealing stuff "air-tight" that aren't coffee bags, like bags of chips, rice, etc.?

    • @MMercM
      @MMercM ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jellycatfish honestly with how many different melt profiles there are between structures of bags (single, double, and triple layers all seal different) I'd recommend a clip in 90% of cases. If you seal wrong your seal will have holes, usually along the top and bottom edge, which will transfer more air than a clip

    Fruit bowl methodology critique: The ethylene saver disks would stop the ripening of fruits that release the gas but the furriness could be from mold which is a fungus? Wouldn't it be better to wash the fruit first to remove any spores? With that in mind, were the fruits washed before putting into the bowl?
    Bacon express critique: Did Ebbers just advocate for pouring bacon fat down the sink instead of saving for cooking other things or throwing away in the bin? Scandalous!

    For the first time I can genuinly say i wouldn't buy any of these...
    I don't buy enough fruit to warrant a fruit saving disc, assuming it even worked... I buy fruit, and eat it that week before it even has a chance to go off. I only buy what I need and nothing more. The resealer is meh for me because again I don't have that many food items in my house i realistically need to reseal, and any that I do are larger bags that I already have a bag sealer for. The bacon toaster thing? What a waste of time, effort and money. Use a pan you lazy sods! It's quicker, easier, produces a better result and far easier to clean. I have a kitchen that's less than 4m squared.It's tiny, I don't have the space for such a silly and near useless item. The spice grinder is again, one of those gadgets that just doesn't do what it says it does on the tin. I've also already got tons of spices. I very very very rarely by whole spices of anything. bay leaves, even though they do nothing!, whole peppercorns for the pepper mill, and salt... beyond that, everything is either fresh or dried and already powdered, i can just mix the powdered spices easily!
    For once I can actually say I have no interest in any of these!!

      Classic. We did this when I worked in theatre. We'd ask them "could you go find us a filter 130?" (which is a transparent colourless filter, useless to have separate, it's only used in lighting eguipment that has a rotating reel of filters that can be remotely switched. In a static light fixture, you'd just have it without a filter.) So if they returned having not found it, we'd say "ah, no matter, we'll just go open white then.".

    Anyone wondering about the science of ethylene gas, there’s a little bit of science and a little bit of myth. Ethylene kick starts the ripening process (ie it triggers the produce to go from unripe to ripe) however after ripening starts, the presence of ethylene gas does quite little. Without ethylene gas, unripe produce would never ripen, which can be a good thing as producers often pick unripe fruit and veg so that it travels better. It is only just before produce is stocked on shelves that sellers introduce ethylene gas to make sure your food ripens to peak ripeness by the time you take it home.

    For the heat sealer one, I got a relatively cheap Impulse sealer with the blue base and swing arm. Not much more expensive, seals in ~5 seconds with auto-off (adjustable for plastic thickness) and can do a 30cm sealing length in one go. Only downside is you have to find a spot to leave it in the kitchen, but really quick to use.
