    That meat thermometer holder shaped as a pan wasn't what I thought it would be. I thought it would be able to tell me the temperature of the actual pan.

      Yes, I have two good old cast iron pans with _plenty_ of "patina" to make them great. And a cheap meat thermometer that is always in the same spot in the kitchen, regardless of what pan I use. Why would I need that monstrosity?

    • @jamesallen4511
      @jamesallen4511 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      I've had one of these in my kitchen for about 9 months now, I really like it - our main (ceramic) hob is a bit rubbish and I'd been keen to get a induction burner.
      The app temp control is pretty accurate, but does have a weird gap between 80c and 110c - so holding something at 90c for a time (eg heat treating milk for making yoghurt) just has to be done manually adjusting the power, not a big deal really. Temp resolution is in 5c gradients which is alright for the price I guess.
      The app isn't that great, wish you could manually do the temp mode on the dial control. For something like using it for sous vide, getting a notification when the timer is up is sorta handy.
      Otherwise it's a solid, really thin induction burner and the price is pretty good too.

    I may be on my lonesome here, but any appliance that is controlled by an app is an instant miss for me, because as soon as that app is no longer supported (which is so common) you are left with junk/brick.

    • @sazzybkk6664
      @sazzybkk6664 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I agree. Why make an appliance which relies on another piece of equipment?

    • @mollymauktealeaf
      @mollymauktealeaf 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      I think it's okay if it can also be controlled solely through the device itself but if it's reliant on the app then yeah, that's a no-go

    • @Montyh7
      @Montyh7 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      @@mollymauktealeafCompletely agree. I have multiple appliances that have full functionally within the appliance itself that are accompanied by an app that simply gives me more information if I so desire; eg toothbrush, air filter etc.
      It's when complete functionality is contained with an app for a discrete appliance that I have the issue, as there just doesn't seem to be any regulations or requirements to continue an app and even with the current interest of 'right of to repair' in many geographical locations, if an appliance doesn't work without the software then it's forever delegated to expensive land waste and a costly mistake on the consumer (eg I've been burned a couple of times now - which is why it's a simple no for me).

    • @lostinature
      @lostinature 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Right there with you. I am not a fan of apps used solely to operate other devices (that should operate independently)

    • @workhardforit
      @workhardforit 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I have that induction cooktop, you don’t have to solely rely on the app, you can actually save your favourite custom programs on-device.
      You can also set the temperature and time on the cooktop itself.
      I had the same concerns as yours until a friend told me about it so I went and bought it.
      Two years of daily use 3-5 times a day and it’s still working great.
      I do have to say, mine is the Xiaomi version not Tokit.
      As for the lunchbox, that’s a no-no for me.

    • @cesarlemos1337
      @cesarlemos1337 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      I mean, that's like old technology (I've used to have one in school almost 20 years ago) that never worked properly.
      But also, I'll have to say, one of the main things about steam boxes is the fact that you should keep the lid on for a while after it warms it up, because that heat going around is what makes the food to be hot on all sides.
      And yeah, you can just put your food with a glass of water in the microwave to get a similar effect.

    The Thermometer pan would be useful if the Thermometer displayed the temperature of the center of the pan itself to control cooking making sure your pan doesn't get too hot. But just having a handle compartment for a detachable Thermometer is uncessary at best.

    I guess they use it for days its raining too hard for building a fire.

      It works really well for that. I have had one of these for about a year now and it was an absolute god send at Christmas, used it as a hot plate to keep things warm, added water to a deep oven pot that was magnetic added water and set it to 70C then put in Pyrex dishes containing veg etc. was brilliant.
      It is also fantastic at searing, you can set the temperature to the perfect Maillard zone 140-165°C and it browns beautifully without going over into the burning temperatures.
      The grilled cheese was fantastic.
      As an extra hob with the extra precision, it is great.
      I bought it as I hate cooking on electric, but want to move away from gas… so this was primarily to see how I got on with induction. I love it and plan to go that route on my main hob.

    The sous vide hob really got my attention. I've been doing that for years in a large pan on a gas stove, controlling the temperature by fiddling with the heat and the placement on the burner, cause I tell myself I don't need another expensive device that makes cooking easier, it should provide a bit of a challenge and blablabla. Once you have mastered the hard way, if only to understand just how a process works, embrace anything that will make it easier.

    I've been wondering why regular induction hobs (the full sized ones) don't have temperature controls built in. It's such a useful function to have when cooking.
    If you're cooking something that wants you to get milk to just below a boil, being able to set your desired temperature to 97C would be a great help. Or if you're making something like cacio e pepe, or a bearnaise sauce where you don't want the temperature to go above a certain level, this type of function would be a god send.

      If it's slow enough it could probably just measure the outside of the pan, knowing the inside will always be at that temp or lower. Great for something like keeping chocolate at dipping temps, but probably not great for like searing a steak. Probably why it's not common on full sized ranges, they're more designed to just dump power in as fast as possible.

      Look at the Sage/Breville Polyscience Control Freak - much more expensive than the Tokit, not wi-fi app controlled but it is programmable. You can save the settings used (time/temp/'name' - the memory is limited but you can also save it to an included usb for later use. The connection to wi-fi for the Tokit can be quite 'sensitive' and it took me several attempts to set up (the instructions aren't great). Overall, the Sage/Breville is easier to use, feels more robust and is more flexibility regarding temperatures and timer, (I have both of these hobs).

    "It comes with an app" is becoming one of the most obvious and fastest turn offs for me, especially in the kitchen. For the love of god stop making me download stuff onto my phone, make an account, sync stuff up, etc etc. I'm so over it, just lemme turn a knob and start heating up. Unfortunately, by making you download an app they get your info and can sell it on, that's why often the cheapest things might have an app attached to them. I have a friend that needed to get a new clothes washer on a budget and ended up getting a "smart washer" with an app because it was the cheapest. Awesome, now they can start their washer from their app. Not sure how they're supposed to load clothes into it from the app but hey, it's SMART!

    I was so excited for the steam box lunchbox…how sad. I do hope they make a mach 2. The burner is very cool. Another use might be if one’s stovetop is failing, and one cannot afford to replace it just yet. It seems a very nice transition unit, and it’s slimline profile make it a great choice, as dealing with it afterwards would not be a challenge.🤗

    If you sous vide in a pan on an induction hob like this, it's recommended to use a trivet (silicone would probably be better) underneath the food so there are no hot spots. Remember, it doesn't circulate like an induction circulator.
    The connection to wi-fi for the Tokit can be quite 'sensitive' and it took me several attempts to set up (the instructions aren't great). Also worth looking at is the Sage/Breville Polyscience Control Freak - much more expensive than the Tokit, not wi-fi app controlled but it is programmable and has a limited memory. You can save the settings used (time/temp/'name' to the machine and you can also save to an included USB for later use. Overall, the Sage/Breville is easier to use, feels more robust and has more flexibility regarding temperatures and timer. Sage/Breville is a well-known brand with a (generally) good reputation (I have a few of their appliances), whilst the Tokit is ‘a new kid on the block’. However, ‘if’ the latter proves to be durable (only time and usage will tell), it represents better VFM, IMHO. (I have both of these hobs.)

    On the Griddle Pan, is the thermometer in the handle so the probe reaches down into the body of the pan to tell you the actual pan has reached temp? That would make more obvious sense for putting it in there surely? Being able to take it out so you can check the core of the food would be an added bonus.
