65 Year Old Fender Rust Repair and Patch Panels for International Harvester

  • Today we're going to walk through how I repaired some a very badly rusted and damaged antique fender from the old international truck restoration project I am working on.
As a note: I am NOT a metal working professional, I'm pretty new to welding and metal work in general, so this is less of a "how to" and more of a learning process for me. But if I can do it, anyone watching this probably can as well.

As you do more welding you’ll definitely get better at it. Where your patch work rounds the corner where you folded it, you should work it with a hammer so that you have a better fit. When you do that you should have something behind the metal, it seems to me you can buy a tool for shaping. I think your doing a wonderful job and you’ll get better at it the more you do it, it takes practice. I love your truck and love watching your videos. Have you ever thought about a cover for your truck to protect it from the elements. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I'm thinking that if might be time to start metal repairs on the cab now that it's nice out again, I'll take a look into the Hamer and backing for sure. As far as the truck being covered, after I striped and primed the truck I placed a tarp over it for the winter. It looks terrible to have such a large tarp in the yard, but it's better than losing my truck to rust!

Looks like you are doing okay. It will take time to learn all of that stuff and you are bound to make mistakes along the way. Check out a guy who goes by Halfass Kustoms. He is in the finishing stages of redoing an International truck and he shows a lot of his work i.e. the bending, the welding, the body work, etc. I think you could probably pick up some pointers watching him. He has all of the tools for almost all of the different jobs, something you don't have yet but that will come. I have enjoyed your videos so far and will keep watching. Keep at it. It will get better.

Thanks for the encouragement! I really have no eye for fine work like painting or body work, but watching some other TH-camrs has helped for sure. Funny you should mention Halfass Kustoms, I have a playlist of his saved that I've been meaning to watch through. I saw him casually fit up a new engine/transmission and have new custom mounts welded up for it in just an evening which just blows my mind. I dread having to do that for mine, I'll be bringing in help for sure.

Enjoying you're videos. With the fenders and hood, I would have done it differently joined them together in one piece, including the grill, then made a plug/mold from it. Then made the whole front end one piece from fibreglass. Alot of work, but just another idea. But you have done very well, keep the videos coming.

Funny you should mention it because for a while there I seriously considered trying to make the fenders out of fiberglass instead of repairing or replacing them.

I'm not a professional welder by any means. Those first welds of yours are not bad at all 🙂👍 I always overlap C's when I weld. Biggest thing is to get the heat right. You done good by getting a gas welder. I cringe when people use flux-core. Its not good for anything really. Keep up the great work 🙂👍

I'm 13 patch panels in now, most of them are on the other fender. My biggest issue has been adjusting the heat for the original sheet metal, It's way harder then I thought to not just blow right through it sometimes. I'm having the truck vapor blasted tomorrow, so I'll really see then just how many spots need attention.

A good start to your welding , every one has to start somewhere , you may do well to get a Harbor Freight spot welder , or may be Princes Auto ? in your area you could check out Frank fn garage for his series on a VW single cab .

You're right, it's a bad habit I still catch myself doing sometimes. I need to buy some shop hoodies that do not have the pull rope
