The industry has truly changed in the last 20 years!! I went to Cosmetology school in the mid-'90s and this is NOT how it was!! The first chapter in all books is called "The Professional Image". You don't wash hair, you shampoo it! Professionals sound like professionals!!
I've been a Licensed Nail Tech since July 2010 and I've been watching the industry morph into a nightmare! A majority of these people you're highlighting are either unlicensed or they went to a ghetto school that didn't whip them into shape!!
So, the "no extra guests" thing came about for a few reasons:
    1. People were bringing their unruly kids and damages usually occured.
    2. The salons are small with no extra seating, by design.
    3. Some salons are owned & rented out by non-industry people who refuse to understand salon culture. They just see $$ and extra people to them magically equals extra money to them.

I like the "no extra guests" rule but I'm gonna need the stylist as well to keep their whole extended family at home, too. I have never been to a salon that doesn't have someone's baby crawling around on the dirty floor. The kid is also very loud (and I admittedly don't like children, so the sound of them is very grating) and the family brings the loudest, most obnoxious toys with them. I went to a salon last year where the kid was playing with a toy teaching the ABC's and so you'd hear that song every five minutes at top volume.
To be fair, the little boy did begin to recite the alphabet, which must've been new as it surprised the family as well and that was kind of cute, but it would've been great if both he and the toy (and one of the plethora of family members who were standing around) had been left at home.

Had a school internship for a hair dresser for three weeks and children where there on occasion and luckily they are all so sweet
The only noise problem I had were the noises of the salon itself (hair driers and the like)
I think it's always important that parents much more tell their children when they are too loud then not accepting guest because no way I hell I go to one on my own I'm way to terrified for that

I understand why hairstylist wouldn’t want to though, because if the work is really bad before it can cause delays or they may have to redo the style altogether. For instance, if there’s a lot of buildup or just poor work they may not want to take the time to fix it when they could just do a whole style.

    • @AnonyMous-lh3cm
      @AnonyMous-lh3cm 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

This, I will say is industry standard. A stylist has no idea what was previously don’t to your head most times. Many clients also don’t exactly know or they claim less was done because they don’t want the service turned down.
      Standard has always been:
Not generally working behind someone else unless extenuating circumstances.
Doing a strand test to determine the integrity of the hair before hand. This actually leads to why many old school stylists wouldn’t. If you came with any chemical processing that required certain steps it immediately becomes a correction. If you wanna be blonde and you have 5 different tones of hair color under black box dye baby at that point I’m not making you blonde-I’m removing color which is a service in and of itself, and I’m correcting the color issues to get the hair even so we can THEN start your journey to blonde. A lot of clients don’t wanna pay for all that. And an old school stylist is not about to do a 3 hour color removal/correction and an additional 2 session color job plus trim and style for the same price as someone with virgin hair coming in off the street.

“Hairstylist” behavior. A beautician would NEVA! Even beauticians who are falling out of love with doing hair don’t neglect their customers like this. It’s always these unlicensed “hairstylist” acting like they’re fed up and bothered by an industry they honestly never cared about; if they really wanted to learn hair, they would’ve went to school for it to REALLY get into it. Never let a “stylist” play in your hair; only go to a licensed beautician or just do it yourself. 🤷🏽‍♀️

It’s pretty simple. These people don’t have a passion for hair. It’s a hustle for them, so they’re squeezing as much money from it as possible, while doing the lease amount of work they can. It’s because they don’t like doing hair for real for real.
People who love doing hair will be all up and through your hair, down to your scalp. They know about hair care, maintenance, hair health, hair types, etc., because they love doing hair.
Don’t go to hustler stylists. Go to passionate professionals because these are the ones who deserve your hard earned money. Not these frauds who see you as a means to an end.

They are using templates made for much less text and just type directly into the template with no second look because it "already looks nice". Look at the fonts and icons used, they are very similar. It might even be leftover text in their long ramblings that mess up the whole flow.

I live in Canada & I just started going to a Dominican hair Salon in my area. I don’t need to book an appointment, they offer walk ins & I never wait more than 10 minutes. I’m tenderhearted so they’re gentle with me & I love the scalp massage during the wash.

Same here in Texas. I go to a Spanish lady but she is always booked! But she charges a fair price for a silk press/Dominican blow out (49$ for short hair and $59 for long hair and $10 for cutting split ends)! She’s quick and efficient. Book online, reschedule online if needed or cancel with in 24 hours. No deposit not crazy policy. I love her. In and out and feel amazing.

All electronic payments through Zelle, apple etc… are traceable by the IRS, the cash is not, but it only takes one unhappy customer to report them and they will be doing hair in prison for commissary goods!
Some of the rules are reasonable, some are ridiculous!
I want to know what happens if a client shows up on time, but the stylist is late?
Will the client get a discount if the stylist is still working on another client when they arrive and they have to wait 45 minutes until they finish?
    Respect goes both ways!
Some of these rules are understandable, some are a bit ridiculous and biased towards the stylist, and I would not choose a stylist with unprofessional rules or expectations.
You work for the client, they should not be calling you the day before their appointment to remind you they are still coming 24 hours before their appointment- you should be sending them an appointment reminder, they don’t send them to you!
Even a doctors office is not this demanding!

Question: is dropping off the wig/lace front/bundle in advance normal? If the stylist is asking the client to clean and prep the hair, what is the purpose of requiring it to be delibered in advance? Is this another way of insuring the client attends their appoontment?

I feel like a lot of these rules probably came from them getting jerked around. Like if you don't set any standards or have any consequences people will just treat you however, unfortunately. That said, some of the fees do start getting ridiculous and the way they're written can sound really abrasive.
Also I loved your yelling the all caps, it was cracking me up.

I’m an Esthetician and clients absolutely try you. People see you as a service provider and then treat you as if your time and skill aren’t important (yet they can’t do it themselves). So I get it from both sides. Still, they are doing too much. I’ve had to just suck it up and eat it when dealing with clients. There is no way to 100% prevent trifling behavior from clients. Being personable, understanding, and flexible will win every time and you’ll build a clientele that respects you and is happy to come see you. Black hairstylists can get away with this behavior because black women are dependent on their services. I do think trifling attracts trifling, every service provider I know has clients that are pretty much like them lol.

@Astr0629 honestly I work in a doctors office, and the attitude on some people is mind boggling. I think it's fair to have a basic deposit, late, and noshow rules. If you booked a 5 hr service, and someone doesn't show up or call, that's really rude, and is a waste of your time and money. Definitely agree it goes both ways.

Cousins were math teachers and principals, and aunt is HS english teacher. I felt every grammar issue and missing punctuation as you were reading. Ive had my hair braided by 2 people with these rules. I dont think they had late fees but the wash +blow dry was something i had to do. Overall they were fine but felt weird just having my bare hair out and dry like that. I prefer doing my own now but it was a new experience thats for sure.

Im a nail tech and work in a pretty nice salon in NYC. New clients are shocked by how simple our policies are lately and this video explains it😂! Basically the rules are show up for your appointment or at least call to cancel/reschedule. No calls/no shows are black listed. If you cancel too often like more than 3 times in a few months is the only time we use the policy that is technically on our books and we require them to have a CC on file and they pay 1/2 the service price on the 4th same day cancelation. They also sign a contract about that. However, I haven't ever had anyone force me to charge that cancelation fee.
I 100% understand both sides on some of the issues. Some people are bizarre and make appointments that they never keep, it feels like they are playing make believe. The problem is on our end, that we most likely turned other people away to hold your appointment open and then we lose money because of that. I'm also not talking about people who get sick or have a legitimate emergency, I'm talking about people who make appointments, confirm the appointment 1-2 days before and then when I call them 10 minutes after they were supposed to arrive and they just say they aren't coming and act like I'm inconveniencing them for even asking! I do feel for everyone who gets scammed tho. That just hurts everyone, including the real professionals who are just trying to provide a service and make a living.

No but like i was going to go schedule an appointment with the woman who used to do it (a nice older woman who only messed me up ONCE and that was when she gave me a whole bowl cut but that's it's own story) and found there was a new salon there.
I spent l less than 10 minutes on her site. She had an obligatory $160 hair detox before you could ever have her style your hair. Then you also had to pay to book that (iirc it was abt $50). I went down her list of what she could do--
Wash and blow were not included and were an add as was cutting ends. That was more than enough for me to know I should keep sticking with my natural hair LMAO

I'm just going to say that some of these rules can be vital for people who own their own business like this.. there are a huge amount of people who have absolutely zero respect for anyone else's time. Especially with things like stating "I don't answer emails or communicate on weekends" is absolutely necessary despite saying you don't work weekends. People do NOT consider emails "work" a lot of the time and think you're just saying "I don't touch hair on the weekends" I have an online shop and have had my shop suspended in vacation mode with an auto reply to emails saying I'm on vacation and have still had problems! And they can go from 0 to entitled so fast! I had someone order something incorrectly during the evening and by the AM when I check my email they've already sent 6 emails having a melt down, calling me a scammer for not answering immediately and are threatening a freaking charge back!! Same with calls, etc.. so I get why some of that is harped on.

hmmm maybe if you don’t want to answer questions when you are off the clock…you shouldn’t take orders either…ppl make mistakes and when you are spending money it is nerve wrecking when you make a mistake and can’t get ahold of someone that owns the business to solve the problem…ijs if you make a mistake or have an issue with a larger company it’s 24/7 customer service…

It also means as a client if things get canceled on their part or something is messed up, YOU CANNOT DISPUTE THAT CHARGE!! Just scam scam scam. I refuse to get my hair, nails, lashes, or makeup done by an independent contractor. You need to work in a salon and the front desk take care of the payment.
