      I think unfortunately a lot of black ppl have underlying bias towards “black businesses ” and “black customers”. I work at a gallery at a predominantly white space but often when black customers come in and they see me, they get real comfortable and start complaining about prices out loud, start speaking badly about merchandise etc. same thing w black business that believe they don’t have to excel in their services when it comes to black customers. It’s unfortunate, it’s almost like we (not you or me but you know the collective) feel a level of superiority and entitlement towards each other that I’m not exactly sure where it comes from.

      My thing is as long as my car can drive with no issues I will by pass the attitudes and go somewhere where my money will be appreciated. The person ain’t gotta be like that and if their reason is because someone else has a Tude then they need to refuse service to that person. The salon should be a relaxing place for us and remember letting someone in your head with that type of spirit can transfer to you. Can’t have everyone in your head.

      I've experienced this same thing. Time is money and money is time, don't waste mine. I had an appointment with a hairdresser who I waited over an hour for. I had to wait for her to eat as well as move from different clients. I promised from that day forward, I'd do my own hair. Take your business and clients seriously.

  • @alliu6562
    @alliu6562 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1308

    I swear it kinda feels like they’re treating clients like family members, like hear me out: a family member might be a little more ok with you being like “oh I gotta go for a bit could you wait a sec?” and leaving them in your home for a sec to pick up your kid from school or something. Or they might be ok with bringing their own hair or washing their own hair bc you’re just doing them a favor, especially if you’re just braiding a family member’s hair for free or something bc yea, duh, they’re family. But that’s exactly why this type of service wrong: this isn’t family, this is a stranger who just paid you for a *professional* service. There needs to be a boundary there. Sometimes, trying to cut costs by going to the cheaper option will cost you more in the long run

    Wig Maker here! Never pay through cash app, Zelle or any other platform that won’t refund your money if you get scammed. No booking site = red flags. It’s $6 a month for a basic booking site and if sis doesn’t take herself seriously enough to pay $6, you shouldn’t take her serious either. Pay a deposit but never pay in full up front. And if she has EVERY day available. Red flag, she’s spreading herself thin and will probably cancel on you once she realizes she would rather have a day off.

    I'm not really superstitious, but I believe that the hair on our heads holds a lot of energy. Having someone style/wash/braid/put their hands in my hair is a very intimate thing for me. When I let a rude, irritable, unprofessional, mean stylist touch my hair, I feel violated. It may sound like an exaggeration, but my hair sheds or breaks more when a stylist I'm not happy with does my hair. When I'm in good hands, it thrives. For over a month, I've contemplated investing in my own hair products and doing my hair at home. I just need the time and energy. But I'm tired of leaving my healthy hair in the hands of these stylists and having them ruin it. I've been seeing one braider for years, but when she's not available and I let others wash/braid my hair, it dries out like crazy and my scalp gets irritated.

    I told my hairstylist that I've been to over 10 salons. And she took her hands through my hair and said, "ohhh mami, I can see." That was 10 years ago. I'll admit it. I was at my wits end. But instead of turning me away, she gave me back my hair and confidence and never made me feel unwelcome. So some stylists can get annoyed by the clients but not all. So that sounds like she has a personal opinion.

    Wow. I'm a nail tech. I'm all for professionals having boundaries, but this is insane. Do you know how many times I and my fellow techs have gotten our butts to the salon even when we aren't feeling well or problems happen? One reason I prefer working in a salon and not on my own is that I have the rest of the salon to help me if there is some issue I can't avoid. Someone else can always do prep work until I'm there or help me catch up if I am running late and vice versa. This bizarre focus on "owning a business" is half the problem. All beauty professionals are not fully trained after school ends, that is the just the beginning. Anyone who comes up in decent salons or barber shops learns from our peers and that is how we know what is and is not acceptable. How we learn proper care of a client both physically and business wise. When you just work alone as a newbie, you don't learn anything and it shows that you dont want to

    Listen, it's a known thing stylists don't like doing women with long hair's heads. The minute she sent those pics , it was a wrap. She was going to give her the run around. Also, if you have long hair, just use your hair because people can't be trusted to not get scissor happy. If the stylist comes off like this or similar, definitely cancel the appointment immediately. I had to learn this the hard way. Now, I only do my hair unless I run into someone integral that knows how to do natural curly hair. Oh & some damage your head on purpose. Some are actually evil & jealous hearted. So don't ignore iffyness at all.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve showed up to an appointment ON TIME and the stylist or nail tech or lash tech wasn’t ready. And I had to wait an hour or so. If I was to be late after 30 minutes it’s a “No call, no show” and they get to keep the full service amount. Some of their booking websites are set up that way. Late fees will automatically be added. I used to go to a woman that could do what I wanted (trendy styles and "unnatural colors") but the last time I went to her, she legit got mad at me because I had to pee like 3 times. Granted I had to pee only once when I was in her chair! The other two times was when my friend was in her chair. We were there for like 6 hours. It's apparent that I'm disabled too. I walk with a crutch and the last time I used the bathroom, she was like 'You better not be going to my bathroom!' and when I hesitated, she just rolled her eyes. Couple that with how my hair was always slightly different than what I wanted and I was like this isn't worth it.
    I also had one woman threaten to kick me out of her salon because I made a joke about crying because I'm really tender headed. I explained that I was tender headed and she said something about letting me brush through my hair first and I said "yeah, because I'm too old to cry in your chair" and laughed. She sneered and said "No, if I see tears then you can get out of my salon. I don't deal with that sh!t". I never went back to her.

      Also, going through menopause doesn’t affect a few woman, We all go through menopause and hormonal thinning/hairloss is not a minority of people, it’s literally apart of menopause and sometimes happens during pregnancy. Just because you may be younger doesn’t mean women in their 40s/50s are a minority group. All women go through menopause.
