  • So here it is people the second part of a two part mini series documenting the life and times of the notorious scuttling gangs of Salford &
    Manchester!
The scuttlers were gangs of young people, both male and female, that menaced the streets of Manchester and Salford towards the end of the nineteenth century.
The had a specific way of dressing, often including brass tipped clogs, distinctive scarves and bell bottomed trousers, they carried weapons, which included belts, knives and guns and sported colourful names. Large-scale street battles or “scuttles” took place amongst the groups, and sometimes the numbers involved swelled to hundreds.

Anthony, this one is brilliant too. My Grandad, Dick (/Richard) Huzzie was born in 1886, and according to family legend, had been a bit of a tear-away in his early years. But he apparently found an outlet as a football player for the „Hanky Park“ Westcoat tearers. Did an apprenticeship, and got what passed for a decent job at that time. He was a great, kind man in my early life, having had the great good fortune to meet and get married to my wonderful Nanna, Kate (Kathleen) nee Moran. The ferocious naked greed-driven infliction of missery and expoitation on the workers in Salford and Manchester by the totally amoral factory owners and export merchants was pure evil. It took an enormous amount of moral strength for any of their victims to come through that with integrity. The survivors were much better people than their exploiters. I'm proud of my Salford worker origins. Although I have had a soft life compared to theirs. They are still my people. Thank you for your lifeline to my roots. You're a good'un.

Sacred Heart! As if those poor people living in that God-forsaken place didn't have it bad enough with the appalling poverty and conditions, they had to live in fear of feral psychopaths like that hallion Burgess and his cohorts roaming the streets. But in spite of my growing horror watching this incredible video, I have to agree with you that so much of the brutality and cruelty was down to the environment. I was reminded of a line in one of Morrissey's lyrics; "see the life I've had, can make a good man bad..."
I'm going to re-watch both parts of your excellent work with a few mates and a few beers! Thank you Anthony.

The desperation of just getting by in those days is unimaginable and I can understand why the scuttlers did what they did. Extreme hardship makes you do things that you wouldn’t normally do. The music at the end was genius!!!! It was so haunting and massively makes you reflect on life as it is today and how desperate it would have been then 😢

Fantastic vid Anthony. Coz I've read the book by Dean Kirby I knew a bit about Henry Burgess but when u discovered he lived into his 60's that left me speechless. Average male age lifespan those days in Angel Meadow was only in the mid late 20's. I'd love to know his life story for his final 30 years. So true about the lads club turning things around. I could go on. Absolutely banger of Scuttler series. Ps. Jusrlt remembered u live in Marple, On the Macc canal tomorrow with 5 lads from IOM...prob in Marple on Tues if fancy a swift...cheers

Excellent. Thanks for your hard work and dedication. You prompted me to do some research on Henry Burgess to find he was orphaned before he was 10. Probably raised by his big sister Ellen Philbin and fell into gangs. Very much a real life Oliver Twist scenario. They had little chance and, as you say, it's worrying to see kids with absent parents today, gangs and no regard for authority and history repeating. Great work.

Really appreciate how much time and effort you've spent on putting these historical facts together for us all to learn about it. Thank you so much xxx

Other things scuttlers got up to were 'bonneting' (jostling young ladies and knocking off their hats - often whilst using rude language), attending music halls such as The Cass in large numbers to spoil the show for everyone else and to fight, and going to more refined outer suburbs purely to run riot and then return home.
Sunday evenings were when boys and girls paraded up and down Oldham Rd, Salford Crescent etc in their best togs. Scuttlers would converge on them and cause trouble verbally and physically. 'Going Crescenting' referred to Salford.
But for every scuttler there were hundreds of thousands of good, peaceful lads and lasses. Female scuttlers existed too in smaller numbers, as well as the lasses who hung onto the male variety.
