THE SCUTTLERS 2 - A Manchester & Salford Documentary!

  • If you're a fan of Peaky blinders, you may be aware that Manchester holds a murky past of it's own, when it comes to gangland culture to rival the Shelby family's shenanigans. Scuttling gangs were territorial fighting gangs, as reflected in their names; the Bengal Tigers came from the cluster of streets and courts off Bengal Street in Ancoats. Most gangs took their names from a local thoroughfare, such as Holland Street, Miles Platting, or Hope Street, Salford!

Can’t even tell you how excited I was to watch this! Absolutely amazing Ant! Your passion for our local history is top notch! I love our history, it’s gritty, tragic, dark but so so interesting and I can’t get enough of it. Scuttlers remind me of Fagins kids in Oliver Twist, desperate to belong and survive. Seriously mate, I wish they would teach Manchester history in our schools because your videos would be perfect for them. 💯

Pity we never found out about the rest of Brooks' life. Bear in mind most scuttlers gave up the life of crime when they reached their early to mid 20s. They married, got better jobs, set up home etc. Scuttling was something teenagers did out of boredom. It was fun. The Lads' Club movement ended it all. If asked, they'd have told you it was their way of letting off steam, and like messing around. They'd have been quite happy left alone by the then rudimentary police force, later refined by Jerome Caminada. There's a direct line from scuttlers to mods and rockers in the 60s.

I kid you not Ant, the locals used to tell me there are literally thousands of bodies buried at Angel Meadow. Under the flags, these poor souls were not afforded the luxury of coffins and were put in the ground as they were. i know on more than one occasion after heavy rain some of their remains washed into the nearby river Irk causing massive health risks. After that it was concreted and St Michaels Flags were laid to contain the site. Great video mate. All the best Les.

Piccadilly Bus Station and Gardens at the side. often saw the blood flowing freely at the weekends. Saturday afternoons were always 'exciting' too, regardless of who was playing at home. In a time before kids had guns and were doped out of their heads, fighting was a right of passage for many. I haven't been home for decades so have no idea what town is like these days.

Brilliant piece of work as always. Local history is always fascinating. Having read plenty about the scuttlers, been to plays and done a number of the local Manchester guided tour walks on the subject, I found your take on it a real credit to your craft. Your talents as researcher, film editor but above all your story telling has the power to capture and hold the attention of your audience from start to finish. You have the unrivalled ability to bring your characters to life with such passion, I think schools etc would benefit greatly if only history was taught in your unique, down to earth, everyday style. Another brilliant video mate, been waiting for this since I watched the last one last year. Great insight into the struggles of those young men trying to make their mark in the dull environment of 19th century Manchester. That Billy Brooks looks one mean character. As a born and bred Mancunian, looking forward to seeing the next one. Well done mate, keep them coming. MCFC loyal since 1973

Absolutely superb! I've seen many of the mug shots of the people in your video, as I'm a genealogist, and I often wondered about their stories.
As a genealogist I see birth, marriage and death records as the skeleton, census records as the muscle and photos, military, medical, criminal records, news articles etc as the 'person'.
I'm going to go back over some of the northern family trees I've done, where I've seen the photos in your video and adding a weblink to your youtube, so anyone researching that ancestor can learn so much more from you!
Love your channel, have liked, subscribed and rang the bell - and also letting my genealogy friends know about you!

On many occasions it was left to the families but there would always be donations from other family’s to help towards funding. If you’ve ever seen Angela’s ashes the film, I’d imagine it would have been very similar circumstances. Thanks so much for watching Sara! I really do appreciate it 💫
