  • The Sound Couple heads out to the park to provide production on what is the hottest gig of the year! In addition, we need to keep our eyes to the skies as the weather could be changing and the threat of rain is on our minds.
    We dig in a bit and demonstrate a step by step sound check describing the entire process through running a song and share some considerations you may not ever thought of during a sound check.
    Last, we realize the importance of everyone having a personal plan to not only protect your gear, but to make sure you are able to take care of yourself by bringing your own beverages to keep yourself safe during extreme conditions.
    The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
    PreSonus UC Surface
    PreSonus CDL12
    PreSonus CDL18s
    PreSonus 32R
    PreSonus SW5E
    PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
    PreSonus AVB-D16
    Please see our "About" for a more comprehensive list of gear we use.

    The Sound Couple heads out to another gig in the midst of sweltering heat, with the possibility of rain. As always, let me begin my comments by thanking Bart and Stacy for yet another truly helpful, enjoyable, and educational video. We appreciate the time and effort The Sound Couple puts into the creation of these videos.
    This is a great opportunity to see the recently purchased rain covers for the speakers in action. What an amazing investment and, obviously, well worth the money for the protection the covers provide.
    The somewhat un-tended grass between concrete slabs on the stage area was interesting to see how The Sound Couple and the band negotiated this little bit of an extra physical challenge.
    As I watched Stacy hook up the whip (snake) from the in-ear unit to the PreSonus SudioLive 32R rack-mount mixer, I wondered if it might be helpful to first plug into the bottom row of inputs of the mixer and then plug into the top row of inputs. I realize this would require “thinking out of numerical order,” but it struck me that once the plugs are in the top row, it makes it harder to see the bottom row. Just pondering this a bit.
    It was also instructive to see Stacy mic up the drum kit. This is an area where some sound techs have a bit of trouble, until they get used to the differences from one drum kit to another and to the preferences of one drummer to another. Since the drum kit forms the foundation of much modern music, getting the drum kit mic’ed properly is critically important.
    It is always particularly helpful when Bart allows us to watch him tune the system for the various instruments, particularly the drums. Seeing the actual changes to the equalization is a very useful lesson. Showing the UC Surface, superimposed on the screen, was a particularly nice touch. It obviously took time to annotate this process. But, to those of use trying to learn the proper tuning of a system, this is most helpful.
    The explanatory notes throughout this video greatly enhances the instructional value of this gig. It is useful to know that some of what Bart chooses to do relates to considering what is in the best interest of both the band and the members of the audience who have arrived early for this outdoor gig.
    (Just a note that may be obvious to most viewers: during the soundcheck it is helpful to remember that we are listening to the mic on the video camera, rather than a feed from the system.)
    Bart takes the time to let us hear the system from various locations throughout the venue. This is very useful information, particularly for those production companies that do outdoor gigs. The impact of outdoor acoustics has a purity to it that many indoor venues simply do not have. But, when the audience speads out throughout the space, it can offer challenges. These are always anticipated by The Sound Couple and handled with their usual professionalism. Bart does a really good job of commenting on this factor at 32:00 in the video.
    The detail of the tear down and load out is always helpful because it displays the reality that a good production company invests time in the preservation of equipment, always treating expensive gear with care. And, it also allows us to see how The Sound Couple has adapted their use of soft cases to house the gear, so that it becomes much easier to set up and tear down.
    Toward the end of the video, I enjoyed the comment from the band member on how well he appreciates the use of in-ear monitoring. Knowing that Bart helped this band, by designing and building their in-ear unit and teaching them how to use it, gives an added sense of a job well done.
    All in all, this was another very valuable time-just short of an hour-invested in learning how a professional production company applies the years of experience and well-honed professionalism to satisfy, even exceed, the expectations of the client. It is obvious that, at the end of the gig, the band is happy and the audience is happy. That is a goal that all production companies should keep in the forefront of their minds.

      Thanks Dean! It’s funny how just a small shift in thinking can make things way easier… I really like your idea of plugging in the bottom first… will have to try that on the next gig! (And when you try it and it works, you go, why didn’t I think of that first?!?!🤦🏻‍♀️)

    Great videos Sound Couple. One suggestion... get rid of that 70's perception of putting Kick in channel 1, snare in 2, etc.. The days of 50 foot wide mixers are over! You have a digital mixer. What I do in that case is I put all the drums on the next layer in my mixer. I use vocals left-to-right (from audience perspective) starting in channel 1, then guitar left, guitar right, keys left/right etc.. Drums on my SQ5 go in channel starting at 17. Usually with drums, other than maybe VCA, it's set and forget. So put them on another level and keep your main level for things you have to adjust all the time. Just a thought..

    Ahhh yes... the helpful person letting you know the vocals can't be heard during soundcheck when the vocals are off. I always wonder what they are thinking... and why they think it needs brought to the sound person's attention? Do they think the tech doesn't realize nobody can hear the vocals? Do they think the tech CAN hear the vocals? Do they think the tech doesn't know the band (or at least the song) has vocals and they are bring it to their attention? LOL...

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do think that there is some sort of entitlement factor that people can say negative things to a sound tech that they would never dare say to a musician....and perhaps it's that persona that we are lesser. The other thing I love is thinking that I have some sort of magic messenger communication that I am able to speak to the band while they are playing to pass on a song request!

    love watching your videos and seeing your setups. what is your honest opinion with this system size and how big of an event/bar could you do with it and still have enough headroom left over? We currently use a Meyer MSL system that is incredibly loud and powerful but extremely heavy to move and stack. Looking for a smaller more portable system that doesn't require a 5ton truck for every show.

    • @thesoundcouple

      My honest opinion is that the CDL's are another "what could have been product" from PreSonus. They have ushered some of the best speaker designers out there, built a great product, and then somewhere, it just gets lost in sales and marketing. I don't know if it's because its special projects for some special people, lack of vision, or what, but it's really frustrating. The CDL cabinets are fantastic, but good luck finding any, except for the "P" series now. We have no plans on going to something else, but if we were looking now, I think we would go a different direction.

    I think using 1 328 per side on ultimate support speaker stands will work as out fills and raise it up on the stand and have you worked with drummers with electronic kits since I work with some in my area for gigs oh and I’m curious if having glass in front the speaker messes with the coverage angle since glass is usually on the right side or left side or behind when I have speakers near?

      Any hard surface such as glass and concrete can really impact the sound of the system and the acoustics of the room. You don't know how it all will behave and work with you or against you until you actually hear the room.

    With them plastic covers, you could always pull them up and have them bunched up on top, with the hole still around the pole, so they are letting the speaker move air unrestricted when there's no rain, and pull them back down again if it starts to shower, that way if it doesn't end up raining at all, you haven't covered your speakers up for no reason and you'll get better sound projection whilst it's dry. Best of both worlds ;).
    At least for the bottom ones, the top covers look like they are much more open and free flowing with that mesh at the front, but then the sub bass will travel through them much easier anyway, so might not be much point heh.

    Noticed when you were checking the drum kit, your gates weren't opening all the way, and they were opening rather slow... might not hurt to speed up the attack of the gates so you don't lose the stick definition and attack of the drum. Just an observation.... obviously I wasn't there to hear how it actually sounded

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the observation Dustin. The truth is (and no attempt on cop-out answer), the gates are probably my least favorite thing on the Series 3. I fight these things more than any other console I have used to the point that I pretty much ignore the metering and go with what I hear. But fair point, I could probably take a closer look from a technical perspective. The biggest challenge is getting a crackling sound you can get on a fast attack and the answer I receive is that I am not doing gating correctly. I can't make any other console I have worked on do this.

    • @dustinthiessen
      @dustinthiessen ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thesoundcouple Yeah, I mean if it sounds ok, then keep doing it. I wonder if it's an ipad thing? metering can often be a little suspect on ipad apps... or do you have the same issue when you're using a control surface? I don't have much time on Presonus stuff, but it's never exactly been my favourite... lol
      Normally when I'm setting a gate on drums, I'll go with the absolute fastest attack I can get away with, without getting the weird clicky artefacts. It's not much of a thing on the higher end desks I'm fortunate enough to work on, but I've spent many many hours on X/M32's or soundcraft si consoles, which all have the clicky gate problem

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Hector, it appears that you don't have a crossover point set and that the CDL's are seeing all frequencies and you just want them to see a common cutover point of 100Hz and above.
      Review on page 10 of your manual:
      "HPF. Engages/disengages the onboard 90 Hz High Pass Filter.
      Sub Mode. Adjusts the crossover frequency and the delay for the companion PreSonus subwoofer being used (CDL18s, ULT18, or AIR18s). When using the CDL12P without a subwoofers, select “Off.”"
      So enabling the Sub mode is probably what you want, but the HPF could do it to, but that would be a more gradual cut-off point which may end up working the speakers harder. You would need to experiment to see what works best for you.
