The SC - Here Comes the Rain Again!
The Sound Couple returns to one of their favorite little nooks....but along with their return, the chance of rain comes with it!
Like the Yankees over the Twins...this place has our number when it comes to the chance of rain.....we almost expect it now because the gigs have either been cancelled because of the weather, or there has been a large chance of rain at some point during this gig!
Sit back and keep saying to yourself, better them than me as you see the Sound Couple deal with a couple down pours of rain!
The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
PreSonus UC Surface
PreSonus CDL12
PreSonus CDL18s
PreSonus 32R
PreSonus SW5E
PreSonus NSB Stageboxes

    My second Friday concert this year it started sprinkling as we went on a break. We are about to start when management decided to take another 30 minute break due to lightning. Somewhere we were about to start again when the sky opened up and rain came down sideways. At which point I killed power to the stage, musicians equipment + monitors. We were doing pretty good until everybody started freaking out and just grabbing things and taking it inside, at that point I was like no we might as well just pack up at this point there's no way that they're coming back out here after the rain stops and going again because everything was everywhere. I can only Forrest Gump the connections back to a point and we were beyond that point. When I'm setting up I'm thinking water, put junctions off the ground if I can. Everything stage wise comes to one point where I can kill power separately for musicians stuff and my stuff. That way I can ramp shut down things and if it's not too bad at least keep the PA going for announcements. I finally found 55 gallon drum trash bags that are clear kind they look nicer can I keep a few of those on hand. it's one shot over the speakers and they're protected, Subs get wrapped. In this case most of the mixer is in a rack case that can take one of those bags as well. I was slightly concerned about the stage box but that sort of ends up in the middle of the tent that we're in since I stick it next to the drums. In the end when the rain stopped there was a puddle underneath the drummer that was probably a good 1/2 inch of water and this is a raised concrete platform. We were not at all expecting sideways rain. The only thing that died was my laptop charger and most of that was due from me drying it out and then putting it back into my damp bag and using it the next day, thankfully it was USB-C so all I have to do is replace a $20 cable. I was a little concerned because during the madness somebody ""helped"" by taking all the microphones off the drum set and stacking them in a pile in the middle of the tent in front of the drums right where the puddle was but I think we got lucky on that one very lucky. Think about in place rain protection and placement during set up. This is harder if you're directly on the ground but if you are on a raised platform that limits how much ground water you have to be concerned about and then you just need to think about shedding the water away. Things I've learned would be nice to have some sort of small like bread bag that I could just toss over microphones. The cables are waterproof assuming they're not sitting in water for a long period of time and not damaged but the ends aren't. So if you can get things like stage boxes underneath things that will cover them or oriented in a way so they won't directly take water face first until you can get some thing over them. Think about what you can do to buy time for yourself ahead of time. And I'm not saying everything has to be fully covered I'm saying if you can group things together where you can literally throw a bag over it that gives you time. Work your way out mixer, stage boxes, mics then speakers. which are going to be semi-OK as long as there not getting directly hit front facing side (or back facing for powered) speakers. Keep junctions off the ground by a few inches it buys you time to assess the situation. Now I can't say this is going to help you for monsoons but a little prevention and preparation can go a long way. But I'm beginning to think I'm weird, I like doing wet events safely. I usually preparing to ride it out, as far as I can with various levels of shut down until it gets really bad. The only downside is usually come away with wet cables that need to get cleaned but it's a good time to clean them anyway. Oh yeah drip loops, be aware of where cables are going so they're not flowing water straight into something.

    That's most jazzy soundcheck/ set up I have heard and without a sax at that. Oh shucks barely saw the drummer request. I like to go after the Soundcheck song and ask if they need any more adjustments and in going into a break as well. That way if I missed any requests mid song I'm reminding them to remind me and I can fix it for the next set or the start. If I don't catch it during in the moment.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a good idea to follow up. If they leave the stage without saying anything...I assume everything is ok. I do get annoyed that when they split immediately to go on break and come up to me seconds before starting and then request something....you couldn't have told me earlier??

  • @imark7777777
    @imark7777777 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I've always check the power at any location that I haven't been to in a fair amount of time and I've never had problems because of it. It's also usually convenient because then it's a good opportunity to find out where the breaker panel is as well.

    4:17 HAHAHAH I'm not alone!!!!!!!!!! I got a gig last year that was weekly on Friday for approximately 3 months. This year they decided to do every other week. Last year it never happened but there is a siren on the roof of this the tallest and only four-story building in a small town, a full on air raid siren and the fire department uses it as a fire siren. This year it's happened twice on a Friday. The local B&Bs have to warn their guests, thankfully I've managed to just barely get lucky enough to remember this year to warn the bands breaking my streak of luck I think. It's kind of weird because it's on the building that we're next to it sounds like it's coming from behind the area due to the reflections when it's in fact above and right next to the area.

    I wrote it for you In a studio where twilight dreams unfold, Bart and Stacy weave their tales of gold. The Sound Couple, masters of the air, With mixing consoles, they create and care. Bart’s fingers glide on faders bright, Crafting depth in the silent night. Stacy’s ears catch every tone, Turning echoes into flesh and bone. Bart sculpts the bass, profound and deep, A heartbeat strong in the music’s sweep. Stacy lifts the treble high, A sparkling shimmer in the sky. In midrange hues, their art combines, Harmony flows in perfect lines. Together they chase the hum and hiss, Transforming noise to melodic bliss. Cables like serpents coil and wind, In their hands, symphonies unwind. Bart tunes the rhythms, steady and clear, Stacy fine-tunes the ambiance near. Their passion dances in the sound’s embrace, Each note a whisper, a lover’s grace. The Sound Couple, Bart and Stacy’s tune, A love song played under the moon. In their studio, magic takes flight, With every mix, their hearts alight. Bart and Stacy, a duet so pure, In their world of sound, their love endures.

      Weather in the US can vary drastically depending on where you are. Here in the midwest, it seems like the seasons develop patterns. We can have long stretches of dry or wet, and the same goes with temperatures. Apparently, the jet stream is a big factor where we live because we are right under the main flow dip of it at any given time so a lot of fronts collide in our area.

    “Rain, rain stay away please don’t come our way today!” Oops! Once again we see what professional production involves, as Bart and Stacy deal with a drowning rain that halts this concert. Taking the time to have a carefully constructed “Rain Plan,” plus providing protection for expensive components, pays off big time in this video. There are plenty of opportunities to learn from this experience of The Sound Couple. • @TinoSchulz1990
      @TinoSchulz1990 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, they first want to protect their own gear of course. (Drums, Guitars, Pedals and what not). I'm pretty sure they're helpful. At least i would be. I even helped out other companies at concerts where i attended as a guest, because i know how hard it can be. And in case of rain, no one cares WHO you are, as long as you keep an eye out for equipment that might be in danger.

      @thesoundcouple 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I am sure they would if we would have asked for it, but we really didn't need it. They also had their own gear to pack too!

      Running sound for a band named “Thunder “ rain was a normal routine. Undercover to the rescue.

      That's not really something that is done in my experience. Everyone is responsible for their own gear. Of course you could ask, but generally most people prefer to handle their own gear.

      Yeah I say musicians take care of your own stuff first kind of like masks on airplanes. What you really want to avoid us having too much help especially if he I'm just gonna grab it and run it inside variety as then you're left with a couple hours of sorting out who's equipment is what.....

    Good plan for rain!! Weird unrelated question - What mic stands do you recommend? I need light and available repair parts. I have had expensive and cheap. The cheap ones seem to last forever and are easy to replace. What mic boom stands do you use?

    • @FenixEventProductions

      K&M 210/9

      Mic stands have really decreased in base quality over the years....we use On-Stage and they are holding up, but nothing to write home about. We have older ones where the quality is substantially better. Looking at the K&M's the viewer commented on, they look pretty good. It's hard to tell if the base is metal. If it's plastic, that will eventually crack, or where the boom pivots from...The K&M looks metal. If they are plastic, this is another weak spot and they will eventually crack.

      I've had a good experience with On-Stage but haven't touched any of their newer stuff. Sometimes brand reputation is well reputation. I know a few folks who just get the cheapest thing they find off Amazon and it always seems cheap to me usually cutting corners in various places. Gravity Stands looks pretty good although I haven't bought any yet. Most of mine I got a lot of for free like the 4 HERCULES Stands which seem really nice. but they're the older models I got them for free I just had to get rid of the annoying rubber coating that turn to gooo an Apoxsee them back together where they were cracking. I think they improved upon the design. I've also hit the hardware store for other stands I think it's a lawnmower part knob that makes a good replacement with a new 1/4-20 bolt for the adjustment that always seems to get stripped out and then the problem is gone.

      It's a great time to be learning what to do and what not to do. As I like to say it's a whole lot easier to watch somebody do it wrong and then not repeat that. You also have time to think things through in the virtual environment of your brain. And be ready with answers. I used to get dragged out of Sunday school to assist/fix the DVD player for Sunday service movie clips. At some point I decided to just stay in the sanctuary and fix problems immediately. That's how I learned what poor leader ship is, and what I would do different. It's also how I was able to spot issues before they arose like the time the theater group didn't plug everything in after they ripped all their stuff out when we changed back over to Sunday service. I also did things like downloading Mackie manuals great learning opportunities there. In some ways I wish I had some more hands-on but I had enough. And in some ways volunteering for a church might be a good opportunity to learn (Church dependent).

    I would be questioning what the House mixer has on the EQ. They might be heavily doing it for the speakers Mic which might be heavily cutting out stuff.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      True...in thinking more about your comment, it reminded me that my mind goes into combat audio mode in these situations. Years ago when I was doing more club work, I mixed on a lot of subpar systems where I developed my survival instincts. This system was far from that even and I a made it work even though you are right, I could have likely spoken with the tech crew to see what they had going on.

    Late to the party here. What you missed in your video is the fact that meanwhile all Fader consoles offer the opportunity to manage the console also with tablet. So I always have my iPad with me and do stagesound or fine adjustments in the room with the tablet. And this is the big disadvantage of rack mixers: I can always use my fader console with an iPad only if I had to. Or I can switch during the gig between FOH and tablet mixing. But not so with a pure rackmixer. I am doing both in my gigs. But I prefer more the physical console for different reasons. One is that I do not have a rack version of my favorite fader console (Behringer Wing). So I am mixing wireless with a Mackie DL32R, that is soundwise not competitive enough. The other reason is the number of inputs I am handling. These are usually about 20-28 inputs or even more. Having them all under control on the tablet is impossible. As I am mixing mainly BigBands and Brass Bands there is a high dynamic in their performance where I do a lot of adjustments during the gig. And for this I am faster with the physical faders.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for your comments! We appreciate you going back to these as there is a lot of good stuff here! Agreed...when we use our actual fader console, we are flipping back and forth between the tablet and console frequently. Physical fader definitely provides the advantage of speed when working with dynamics groups.

    Networking can be complicated. I try and label any router I set up of course that doesn't mean somebody doesn't go in and change it. As a back up I'm already carrying a travel router and if I need to I can set that to AP mode and plug it into the House network and be in no password required and then all my devices connect up to my network and I don't have to change anything. you have to be a little worried about wifi crowding but that's only for 2.5GHz and if you're not using the House Wi-Fi you're not gonna have conflicting data on that channel.
