- Dad and I had a great morning fishing at Lake Nillahcootie last week. The fish were going psycho as many fish rushed to take our bait.
We were hoping to catch a few yellowbelly but were not expecting the fishing to be as good as it was in spring. Instead we found the fishing to be better than what it was in spring.
This was the best fishing that I have had at Lake Nillahcootie for quite a long time.

Thanks so much Chris. Sure was a ripper session mate. Getting the boat out was a problem though. LOL 40 minutes later.... We had to wait for 6 or 7 boats to either launch or pull their boat out. It was crazy busy down that end of the lake.

hahaha Thanks so much David. I remember years ago we went fishing. I was only about 13 or 14. We caught 9 yellowbelly... and I caught every single one of them. It was just one of those nights.
Anyhow as a typical kid I wouldn't shut up about it. LOL I was bragging to my neighbour, his name was Bill. And dad said, with a serious voice "It doesn't matter who catches the fish mate as long as they get caught".

Thanks mate. I prefer a baitcaster for lures, such as the lipless crankbaits in this video, but I prefer spinning reels for bait fishing, and for casting light lures such as trout and redfin lures.
I’m pretty sure if the fish swallows the hook just cut the line because the hooks are designed to dissolve in case the fish does swallow the hook.

Absolutely David. I caught a few small cod on them this evening. They're big fat and juicy! To be honest I honestly do not know. We have a couple of dams that we usually get them from. I think they're around $10 - $12 per dozen or thereabouts.

haha I am not sure to be honest. That was my first though but then there was a heap of brown/green crap with it, which is exactly what snake pooh looks like. The white comes from the hjigh levels of calcium that they eat and I thought maybe yellowbelly might be the same? I honestly don't know sorry mate.

A life changing piece of advice. I don't know how I ever got this far without it!
I like your dad's ideology there, if you have to measure them to even be sure if it's legal, then it's probably not worth keeping, it's cutting hairs too much. As you pointed out, the minimum legal size for a lot of these fish is pretty small anyway, a 30cm fish is rather small, once the tail and head is discounted you only really have maybe a 15-16cm long fillet. I think realistically that 35cm and upwards is a good size to keep Yellowbelly.
For cod however it's a different story, since legal size is 55cm, a cod of that size is indeed a very good sized meal. And apparently you don't want to keep the huge cod like the 80cm+ ones anyway, since those are the ones that are the breeders that lay the most eggs, which helps keep the population alive. Apparently a small breeding cod will only lay 10,000 eggs, where as a large cod will lay up to 90,000 eggs. So the large cod specimens should never be kept, and should be released I think. People should only take the 55cm-70cm specimens for eating.
I will take Redfin however that are only 25cm, since there is no legal size limit, they are considered a pest anyway that affect native fish, so I take all Redfin 25cm and up.
One advantage of Yellowbelly is the deep body. I find once a Yellowbelly is maybe around 40cm, they start to develop a very deep body. They often can be nearly twice as deep in their body as a common fish species of a similar length. So you get a lot of meat off the Yellowbelly I find, and it's bloody excellent tasting meat with a nice rich taste.

Loving your content. We've just started fishing at Lake Nillahcootie. What's the largest cod you've caught? We've had luck with the murray cod but not yellow belly. What would you suggest to increase our chance of catching one? Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them :)
Yebbly are very structure oriented, like cod, however, in my experience, you are more likely to find them on snaggy, branchy timber and scattered rock/broken bottom than on the bigger logs and rock bars that cod prefer. That is not to say you won't find either species in the other structure, it just seems to be a preference. Other good places to find yebblies are around the margins and in breaks in weed beds, at flow ins from smaller feeder creeks and streams, in shallow, sunny bays, particularly later in the day and very early in the morning. If the bay has a lot of reed beds, all the better. Hit the drop offs into deeper water through the day, fish the shallows into the evenings. Hunt the shaded areas where possible. Yebblies love a good patch of shade and often hang in them in schools like cows around the lone gum tree in the paddock. Once you get one, focus on the area. Where there is one, there is often more.
You don't say whether you are shore fishing, or in a boat, nor do you mention bait vs lure.
Baits for yebblies include smaller yabbies (small being relative to the size a cod will eat. A yebbly will smash a good sized yabby), shrimp, worms, grubs with a shrimp/worm cocktail being right up the top for yebbly bait.
Lures, Yebbly like a nice small to medium lure. In the 50 - 80 mm range seems about their comfort zone. You will pick them up on lures outside this range, but this seems to be the most consistent. Hardbody divers
Vibes and Blades (Deadly but snag prone if fished from the shore. Fish so it just bumps along bottom with occasional pauses and dead stops, jerking it back to life and letting it flutter back to bottom before resuming retrieve briefly before repeating the dying fish = dinner routine.)

soft plastics (curl tails, paddle tail minnows and wriggle tails are great rigged on jig heads, pin tail minnows, split tail minnows, paddle tails and worms deadly on a dropshot/paternoster rig. Wriggle tails, worms, creature baits and craws great on running sinker rigs)
Spoons (traditional Metal and Tassie Devil style winged spoons inclusive)
Inline Spinners (size 1-3)
Spinner and Chatter baits in smaller sizes
jig spinners
Small Surface Lures (cicada imitations, bass/whiting poppers etc)
Skirted Jigs
Mostly you want to fish slowly for yebblies. They are generally not the most active fish in the pond, preferring to ambush an easy meal than chase a fleeing minnow or yabby all over the place. There are times that they will be actively hunting, but the rule of thumb is fish slowly, and then slow it down a bit. Basically, fish as slowly as you can and still impart action to the lure. Plenty of pauses and direction changes in the retrieve also helps as the lure darts and stops and stuff.
Don't be in an almighty rush to whip the lure in and make the next cast. Fish the lure all the way to the shore/boat. Yebblies are a fish that are very prone to following and striking late. They also lurk close to the shoreline much of the time when hunting, as this is where they expect to find the smaller bait fish, yabbies and shrimp they feed upon, along with many insects and worms washed out of the shoreline vegetation etc. This means that fishing in close, parallel to and right up to the shore is important. There will often be fish sitting just off the shore line you will miss if you discount the last part of the retrieve to whip it back out towards the far shore again. Fish all the way to the tip and then make a couple of figure 8's or swishes before slowly lifting the lure from the water. This will often tempt a following fish to strike.
From a boat, find standing timber, drop offs and old creek beds and gullies, rocky areas, the shoreline, and weed beds. Fish with bobber yabbies, worms and wieighted lures lust jiggling them slightly. This includes blades, vibes, spinner baits and plastics. Spin the shoreline using spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, inline spinners and bibbed divers, with top water lures in the evening and at sunrise. Get as close to structure as possible.
Should be enough to go on to find and catch some Yebblies. They are a fun fish, hit like a freight train, but have little stamina. Make sure they do not get a chance to bury their head into the sticks, if they do that, you are in trouble. Tight drag and keep the pressure on is the mantra. They are even more prone to doing this than cod are. And the seem to know every nook and cranny in the area.

@@AndrewFishman Yes so we fish on the shore line, often near the bridge. We have some trouble with the weeds in some areas and losing our hooks. We have just been using simple bait - worms, corn, cheese. Yet to try yabbies, or lures. We are just starting out so have begun simple. Yellowbelly love a moving bait, they also love freshwater, which is why we love fishing it in spring time when it is filling.
At the moment people are catching yellowbelly from the bank in all parts of the lake using worms and small yabbies.
