  • @neilcondron8315
    @neilcondron8315 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Robbie. I think those 15 -20 cm Murray Cod would be from last years breeding. If not then certainly from the previous years breeding. They grow to about 55cms in about 5 yrs and are able to breed. They produce more eggs as they get bigger and older. After mating takes place the MALE looks after the fry until they are a few months old. That's why there's a 3 month closed season.. Cheers

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Neil thanks for the great insite mate, I knew most of that but didn't know how fast the fingerlings grow. I also didn't know that the male stays to keep guard for 3 months. WOW I spoke to a friend of mine who has done a lot of university training in marine biology and he too said that those cod would most likely be from last season and that this seasons fry would probably still only be a few cm long. SO you both gave me the same answer. Thanks mate.

    Cod reach 65cm by age 4 or 5. After that they put on roughly 1kg a year. They breed at 4yr old. They grow rapidly in the first 4 years so that must be last winters spawn. Vr fish website.

    So you tag fish to help track ages etc?

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi mate, I don't tag them myself, fisheries do a lot of that in my area. I catch tagged fish occasionally and call the number through to the ARI. Most of the tagged fish that I catch are not that small though.

  • @_Alex_MV
    @_Alex_MV 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    One question cause I’m cautious, why don’t you keep the fish you catch and eat it or do a catch and cook?

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alex, I do have a number of catch and cook videos. I will definitely keep a legal sized yellowbelly, or a cod from a stocked lake. I keep a lot of redfin too, but rarely ever keep a wild trout. If you search "robbiefishing catch and cook" you should be able to find a video or two of mine. I even have 2 carp catch and cooks. hahaha

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mate these rods have 6lb on them I think. One may have 8. I prefer light line cause it helps me to detect bites from smaller fish.
