- Catching bass and pike with a Freddy the frog lure! This video consists of footage from three separate trips. I fished Freddy a few times and caught a nice fish or two each trip but never had a day where I really hammered them, so instead of deleting the footage I decided to compile them together for a quick video. A couple of these trips the wind picked up on me and the other was a hot sunny day so maybe not the best topwater conditions but it's an interesting lure I might have to try again some time!

I'm jealous of these conditions. It's cold, rainy, and windy here in Connecticut today, so no fishing for me.
And everything is flooded with all this rain. Dying to hit the CT and Mattabassett river but it might be a while.

I bought one five years ago and haven't taken my bass boat out since.
Last time I was this early I had time to fish for myself instead of living vicariously through TH-camrs.
Definitely getting one of these. Love the hook setup. I feel like I lose too many fish the way the double hook is setup on traditional rubber frogs.

As an avid fly fisherman, I got my start fishing for trout and salmon in Anchorage and the on Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, years and years of short seasons and great stories for each one, but I can honestly say that after moving and fishing other states that Smallies are by far the absolute best target fish. Day's of catching 15" to 18" smalls, is what I want in my retirement. Thank you for all the great content you share with us. Best wishes on another phenomenal season of NDYakAngler!

If you haven't tried it before you should give Westin swim a try it's an amazing simple long lasting lure for pike you can get it in 10-12cm 31-54gram the lure has a nice gliding action with a steady retrieve. Without question the lure me and my friends caught most fish on, would love to see it in action on some smallies 🤞

Appreciate you putting this compilation of Freddy the Frog 🐸 as an equal opportunity multi species weapon. I'd have taken a swipe at the feog if he ventured into my territory. Of course it is a good bait, It's from Sweden. Or at least the brand original was from here, started with Ingvar Westin from Gävle back in the 50's who made a famous wobbler called Westins Jätte (giant in eng), still one of the best bait for big pikes, great slow roling action.
I hate nothing more in bass fishing than, the fish splashing my face on the release. What I love about your videos is the difference in how the two species of bass react to release. The largemouth are borderline almost chill about it. The smallmouth seem to be out for vengeance. The kick up so more water at you. I find it amusing.
This lure with a wire leader, and slow troll it close to the bank would absolutely slay pike up here I imagine. I’m going to try it. Nice video, thanks for posting
11 minutes of fishing is just a painful tease to me! I'd love to see Matt include us on a Live feed fishing trip one day. Catching fish or not it would be a very enjoyable outing to watch.

What is now called a...pike minnow.. in Oregon, was called a squawfish, from the chub family, at least it looks like a big chub. I live in Oregon now and am not aware of any....Northern Pike here.
Have you ever tried going barbless? Also nice to know how far are your longer casts?
Here in Northern Kansas it's juuust warm enough for bass to be in either prespawn or spawn. They're pushed up in the shallows. Caught my first one of the year about a week ago, and then caught 6 more over the course of this week. Leaving my house after I watch this video to hopefully get a couple more. Stoked for bass season, I really haven't figured out the winter fish pattern.

I remember you talking about your net in the last video- the savage gear rubberised net is really good. I used it for all my pike fishing. Great big net that folds in half with extendable handle. Super strong. And good for big fish

This is from three different days and locations. The first and last were more mid day, the middle was one mid morning.
As a serious lure junkie, of course i have a few Freddy's...including the big size, which is pretty big! No doubt a big bass would find it simply delicious 😂

I had a different setup for each of the three different types of fish. For pike I had 30lb braid with a 50lb fluoro leader.

I remember once going down to my local fishing pond one day and in one corner there were hundreds of very large frogs (they might have been toads) mating and the pike were all lined up just watching them but I didn't see any of them take one, there must have been near on a dozen pike there and some real chonkers too.
I'm hoping to paddle up on a situation like that one day with this lure in my tackle bag! A friend who told me about one of the slough spots I fish said he saw pike snatching up frogs from right along the shoreline there one day about this time of year maybe into May. I'll be checking out a couple of those spots once it warms up!
Trilene knot is the best. I use it for mono and fluoro. Braid gets a polomar.

How often did you tip over and fall in the drink when you first started fishing out of kayaks? I want to get one but I'm a *complete* kayak newbie, and I'm a 55 year old lady who doesn't want to fall in a bunch of times when I'm learning. Any tips, anyone?
How do you choose what rivers are best in your area to fish for smallies? I live in NC and it’s hard to find good fishable spots for them!
The first thing I'll do is a Google search of the river name and smallmouth bass to see if they're in there if I don't already know. If they are something will almost always pop up, a fishing report or stocking/sample info from the state. Then it's get out there and try a few spots. I'll look over the river on satellite maps and see if anything sticks out like a dam or islands or a bunch of drainage pipes, then locate a spot to access and check it out!
If you dont mind me asking what was the air temp/water temp when fishing in this video? I can never seem to catch any fish here in upstate ny i have tried everything. It seems impossible lol

I’m an intermediate bass/pike angler and was wondering the best line combinations? And for what type of lures
I generally run three casting setups for bass: a M XF which is kind of on the lighter side of medium power with 15lb braid/12 fluoro leader for light lures, a M F kind of a general purpose rod with 14lb mono I use for spooks, ploppers, medium jigs, etc, and a MH F with 30lb braid I’ll use for frog fishing and heavier lures or in heavy cover. For pike I’ll usually use that MH rod with a steel or heavy fluoro leader. I have a couple designated pike rods if that’s what I’m specifically after but they’re about the same specs as my MH bass setup.
How many starts fo you get?? Lol 😮
What type of retrieve do you use for this type of lure? It looks like you could slow reel it or twitch and pause.
Im 64 it would take me 2 minutes to get the line through the eye of the hook. Lol

Matt what glasses do you use? Since u always see fish when you're sitting pretty much flat on the yak. It's not like ur elevated or standing to see a fish from afar.
I wear Costas, copper mirror lenses. I can see slightly more than my camera does which also has a polarized lens.
