    Wow this video is a life saver. We have a 2012 Dodge Avenger w/ that exact same 3.6 v6 in it. We recently, while on a long trip started having over heating issues & I noticed, when I stopped & grabbed some coolant to add that the coolant in the reservoir was a thick peanut butter like substance rather than the normal color. We limped it home due to our financial situation at that time we weren't going to be able to afford a 3hr tow Bill. After getting home I replaced the thermostat & flushed the HELL outta the coolant system but it seemed that I could NVR get that peanut butter like substance completely cleaned out & I flushed that thing every bit of 30-40 times no exaggeration! Lol I am no certified mechanic but I'm fairly confident as a DIY'er mechanic if you will lol. I was terrified that my issue was possibly a head gasket or cracked head issue from the little bit of over heating we delt with on our trip home. But recently while talking to some ppl on mechanical forums they pointed me to this being a more likely suspect with regards to my issue. Now after watching this video I'm greatly relieved that I am quite certain this is going to be my culprit. So thanks a million for the video man 👍👌👊👍 a HUGE help. I'm definitely a subscriber now! I do have 1 quick ? tho, I heard you say something about the coolant that engine took was a purple color? I ask because, although ours is a 2012 Avenger the engine is an absolute carbon copy of the way our 2012 looks however ours uses a HOAT phosphate free coolant that as far as I've found has always been a yellow color. I use Zerex G-05. Of course this isn't some extremely important question I was just kinda curious as to why a 2014 3.6 that looks like a mirror image of or 2012 motor would use a different coolant? I suppose you did just mention the color maybe they make a HOAT phosphate free coolant that's purple I wasn't aware of. Anyways just wanted to let you know your video was a life saver bro! Sorry for my novel lol. Keep up the great work & helpful videos there greatly appreciated!

      I feel that the cooler will be your issue. It will take alot of flushing to get the mess out once its replaced. Now if its been over heated too much it could have warped the heads but lets hope not. As far as the coolant.......5 year/100,000 mile (HOAT) is recommended.....its more on the pink side as far as color.

      @@MotorCityMechanic hey thanks for getting right back to me regarding my issue. No kidding when I say I've left probably 20 other msgs on different ppls channels of ?'s about this issue as well as a variety of other issues & not 1 has ever replied back w/an answer so big props man I'll definitely be referring any of my friends to your channel who may have mechanical ?'s. Thanks again man a thousand times over huge weight off my shoulders to finally have some professional feedback that seems to be the answer I've been looking for. We also own a 2003 Lincoln TC & a 2005 Chrysler 300 that are both needing some work done to them sooner than later, the 300 especially so I may be looking through your other videos & probably asking a question here or there. Hopefully you can give me some professional tips to help me through those up coming headaches as well. Thanks again!!!!

    Very helpful thank you. I did my 2011 Dodge Avenger and my Haynes Books says the torque specs for the filter housing/cooler bolts are 35 lbs not 106. The screws holding the oil
    Cooler to the filter housing are 106. But if you’re replacing the whole assembly FYI on the torque specs.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just checked.....The service manual states 106in/lbs for filter/cooler assembly to engine block.....the cooler to the plastic filter housing/assembly is 35in/lbs. I don’t know why anyone would remove the cooler or replace it with out replacing the entire filter/cooler assembly. The screws for the cooler are going into a plastic filter assembly so 106 would be too much and strip it out.

    When an oil cooler assembly goes bad, is it possible to have coolant leak through the intake valve and exit the exhaust valve? I blew some coolant out of the exhaust pipe with some white smoke after a cold start. I ran a compression test and all cylinders read 148 psi with 7 cranks. I used my scope to inspect the top of the pistons and no pistons were washed or have standing fluid on them. Just normal carbon build up on them. I also inspected the intake valves and they look normal as well. Should I perform a leak down test with the piston in the down position (making sure both (exhaust and intake) valves are closed to check to see if the cylinder wall is cracked and that possibly is where I am loosing some coolant? I will perform a leak down test tomorrow on each cylinder. 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 105,000 miles. Thanks.

    Thanks for the video, I have a 200 Chrysler 2011 3.6 v6 and the car overheating and leak coolant like crazy !! I looked underneath the intake and it's full of coolant so do you think that might be the issue? And I did found coolant right under the coolant reservoir and the cooling system always full of air !! Hope this will make It easier for you to tell me what the problem is , and thank you very much for your videos really good work.

      I recommend pressure testing the system to see if you can locate the leak. There is a good chance that the leak is from the cooler assembly. I have seen it a few times. There isnt anything in that area that would allow coolant to be there except for the cooler. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe!

    I freakin love you bro! 👍 ...Saved my ass. I've done my share of working on cars but generally the same ol same ol... Alternator, battery, water pump, thermostat
    Etc... Nothing this involved. So, I'm doing this right now, with hand tools, flashlight, while a wearing hoody on the side of the road. It's 2:15am and a bit chilly here in the desert 55°F buuurrr. I bet you'll get a laugh out that since it's much colder in your town. I'm hoping it's just a seal gone bad. Coolant lis leaking between the two left bolts across backside of cooler. I got the seals last minute(don't even have a new cooler...lol) and they cost $32w/tax. Felpro brand. I'm an optimist and a little stoned😉 legal here now. I actually considered using some high temp RTV and slathering it around the leaking area after I cleaned it of course. And then minimizing the capacity of the cooling system by clamping off a couple hoses or whatever I need to do and then applying a vacuum to that area where the leak with the RTV around it is. Then the RTV will get sucked into the leak. I wasn't even stoned when I had that idea. Break times over. there's a lot more I really wanted to say but this is probably already too long. but again thank you bro thank you thank you thank you. And God bless you! 😎. Maybe I'll send you a picture of the motor all nice and pretty and clean again it's nasty behind that plenum. PS I also intend on doing plugs and coils. No maybe I'll just do it again next week because I don't have the plugs and coils.....lmao. bye

    Hi, I just had another question when it comes to Antifreeze on this repair. Can you re use the captured Antifreeze that you drained as long as it is not contaminated? Or should you put back in brand new Antifreeze? Thanks

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You sure can reuse it. Just use a clean container. Some years had the 5 year/100k mile antifreeze. If that applies to your vehicle and you over by time or mileage then I would say replace the antifreeze. Thanks for watching and for the question Jeran!

  • @goenitzlopez9391

    What actually caused the item to leak oil? Was it the rubber seal on the bottom? A crack somewhere? Where the cartridge hooks up to the cooler Etc. Just wondering in case I ever run into this problem if its possible to replace the seal or whatever failed instead of the whole assembly

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Goenitz Lopez Its hard to tell because you cant see it where its located while the engine is running to see exactly where on the cooler the leak is. The part comes as an assembly. • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bleed it with the engine off. That way your not dealing with hot coolant and risk getting burnt. Cold will work great. I have a 2011Chrysler 200 3.6 2 month ago it overheated an took took it to pep boys they said it was the water pump. They charged me $580. I've driven it close to 200 miles. Yesterday when I left the house I got 2 blocks when my temperature went straight too hot. I pulled over called pep boys told them an had it towed there. They said it wasn't the water pump. That the leak was coming from either the lower radiator hose or the metal pipe under the lower intake that transfers the coolant from the passenger side to the drivers side of the car. But couldn't tell me which one for sure unless I agreed to pay 180. Labor to remove the lower intake. Depending if it was the hose or metal pipe the repair cost would be 300. - 600. I paid for the tow and towed it home. My neighbor offered to remove the intake and said when he removed the oil cooler a piece on the bottom was broke. I've watched your video and read comments on problems regarding to this part and none of them where caused from major coolant coming from the drivers side of the engine. Can you please give me some advice???

      MotorCity Mechanic just a quick rundown on what is going on. 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6 180,000 miles. My wife’s Jeep. A few weeks ago it started to run a little hotter than usual I looked under and around the motor and couldn’t find any leaks so I installed a new thermostat and housing. Worked great for about 2 weeks of so. Started running hot again noticed a leak around the water pump bolts so I installed a new water pump. Now it’s continuously running hot still no visible leaks pressure tested the cooling system and it has a leak. Radiator is not clogged up could it possibly be the oil cooler leaking? There is no coolant in the oil. I checked the oil and no water is on the dipstick. No water or smoke coming out the exhaust. Sorry for the long story but I’ve taken it to a few mechanics and everyone is stumped. Another note it running hot is about 235-240 degrees on the digital readout on the dashboard. No loss of power or hesitation at all. Again sorry for the long story but I’m about stumped myself I’m no full blown mechanic but I’m not exactly a amateur either. Thank you for responding to my comment any help or advice is greatly appreciated

      Not sure what you might have done......did you let something fall down inside the intake runners? Otherwise I can only recommend that you go back over everything because the repair itself wont cause any issues unless you drop something down the intake runner and then it gets into the cylinder when the engine is running.

    When is this going to become a recall. Obvious issue with 3.6L engines. What keeps the part from failing again? Say you're just outside your 3yr/ 36000 warranty. Is this something that will fail every 40K?

      +B Black They have revised the part over time to address issues that have come up. That's one main reason why I always recommend OEM parts when available because if they see a number of failures....they will redesign the part to address the issue. I haven't seen any repeat failures so far. As far as a recall....its strange what falls into being recalls from time to time. I am sure that is a cause and reason as to what is recalled and what is not. Keep in mind that the Government regulates and monitors the same things that the manufactures come across as well and if they feel one is needed....it will happen. Its been a while now since I have seen this issue come into the shop but that doesn't mean that they are not out there. I do appreciate the comment and thanks for watching. I would make sure that the oring around the oil filter cap is okay and not torn. If okay....then the oil filter housing/cooler assembly will need to be replaced. Thanks for the question. Make sure to subscribe
