    A regular engineer: "Lets place the oil cooler in an easy to reach spot in front of the radiator and isolate it from coolant so they won't mix, making it out of metal will make it last too."
    Retarded Chrysler engineer: "Dur, duh, let's place the coolant and oil right next to each other in a plastic container in the middle of the engine! I'm smart!"

      @@MotorCityMechanic that is cool! However, I found the Dorman part to be just as failure prone. After two failures I opted to install the 2014-present assembly. I have a question related to the Slight extra height of the later cooler. Does the extra height indicate an increased cooling capacity or is it simply due to different supplier?

    what would happen if that small plastic piece (lil piece holding spring on tower) falls in to the hole?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +OMGodfrey That's really a good question. Do you start taking items off the engine to try to locate such as drop the oil pan to see if it can be found? In a perfect world yes. I haven't seen one broke when it came in already. The ones I see break a second or two after I remove the oil filter cap. I then am able to get all the pieces out. In theory with it being plastic and as small as the piece may be.....the oil pump screen will stop it if it makes it to the oil pan. If you know for sure that the piece fell down the hole then dropping the pan wouldn't be a bad next step to see if it can be located.

  • @a990dna
    @a990dna 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    @MC - This is an excellent video. I just learned about this plastic part breaking a few days ago. And here you have full video and writeup on this issue. The newer housing has had problems and there's been two engineering changes to remedy the situation. My question to you... can the newer housing be used on the 2011-2013 3.6L motor? I think the newer filter design is better than the older design assuming they worked out the 2014 and newer housing design issues.
    Thanks in advance..

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't tried to see if it will interchange with the older style. One issue I would see is the obvious.....every time you had the oil changed they would try to install the wrong oil filter. Both versions use a different style of cartridge filter.I have seen that done before by an aftermarket shop and it caused no oil pressure. Luckily it didn't damage the engine. Thanks for finding my channel and watching the video. Make sure to subscribe if you haven't already

    Appreciate your videos. Just ordered the part via your Amazon link. Like you said there are 2 part numbers that appear to be interchangeable, but filters change. My 2015 200C 3.6L uses PN#68105583AE, same number for other models except E is an F and filter doesn't have the locator pin type end. Started this adventure going after an oil pressure sending unit code and using your 2 part video on that. Had tried your shortcut video, but just couldn't get to it so went the manifold off route. Once I got to it the sending unit just spun as the bushing in the housing that it screws into was stripped and had been visibly leaking by. Also worth noting is all the parts houses are selling a 1-1/16 oil pressure switch as a direct replacement that uses a standard 1-1/16 hex head so sending unit sockets won't fit (to small without the rounded edges) and there isn't room to get a normal 3" long deep well in there so unless you get an OEM sending unit plan on removing this "Oil Filter HSNG" just to replace the pressure sending unit. Any idea what the torx head size is on these housings and what the torque spec is?

    Great video! Been there done that. Replaced it myself. I figured out when a oil change place would change my oil, they really wrenched on that 24MM cap housing. Bending and tweeking everything. Then the oil started leaking. Since I bought the van from my owner, I do every oil change. I'm very careful removing and tightening the cap. My question to you is: what can be done with the transmission to keep it from shifting down 1,2, even 3 gears going down a hill?? I will be going 70 MPH. As I start to go down the hill if I don't keep steady pressure on the gas pedal, and let off some to keep my speed at 70, the transmission will shift down! I'll go from 2,200 RPM to over 4,000 to 5,000 RPM!!!!! Ive tried everything to make it not do it. Nothing works! I put it in manual mode, still does it. Cruise on or of, still does it. Keeping my foot on the gas, when I do that, my speed just keeps increasing and now I am speeding! So whenever I see a down hill coming, I have to back way off and do like 40 to 45 MPH down a hill because of the shifting down. SO that puts everyone else trying to run me over going down a hill. I cringe everytime! Is there anyway to shut this off??? I hate it! I don't like my engine to go over 3,000 rpms! It's been back to the dealer many times and they say the transmission is working the way it's designed to. I'm and Expediter and I haul freight all over the country in this van. I have over 555,000 miles on it. I love the van, except for the transmission. I would think there would be a switch on the dash to shut it off. We think it's a program in the PCM or TCM that makes it do it. Can it be over written or deleted??? Cause I will tell you, it really sucks going 70 mph and all of a sudden your transmission drops down 3 gears and your engine is screaming!!! All these Promasters do it. Most people don't care and they just let them rev. I don't. Mine is a 2014 Ram Promaster 3500 3.6. Any information would be greatly appreciated !!! Thank you! Randy.

    Oil change today revealed a broken spring valve mechanism. Nobody at the shop knew how it was supposed to work or if it was necessary. Even a trip to the local Dodge dealer left me wondering what part needed to be replaced - they could not find anything of the sort and no exploded diagram. I suspected then that this would require a whole new housing, or maybe it came with the cap. Your video cleared up all the mystery. I don't often comment on youtube videos, but your video really deserved an 'attaboy' today. Thanks!

      When there is an oil cooler issue you would have either a coolant leak in that area where it is located and the other would be oil getting into the coolant. There are many causes for your issue, I dont think this is one. Its going to take having someone look at it to find the issue.

      I have heard of coolers leaking and causing oil in the antifreeze. Its pretty much the oil location for oil to get into the coolant unless something major went wrong with the engine but you would have bigger issues then so my money is on the cooler. You will need to flush the coolant system numerous times to get as much of the residue out as possible. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.

    • @MotorCityMechanic

      They are interchangeable and before the bypass valve kit came out...some where making that swap. You run into the whole.....lube shop installing the wrong filter issue and yes it happens lol. Its best in my opinion to keep it the same so there is no confusion for the mechanic working on it or the next person that buys it. Not tooo sure where on the 2014 and newer....possibly in the cap or at the lower end of the oil filter opening.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Perreira morning. You can switch versions and they will bolt up with no issues. The problem that comes up is oil filters. Shops and mechanics select oil filters based on year of engine and when you make that switch....the wrong oil filter will be selected and installed. This can become a big issue. People say they will be the only ones changing their oil but over time vehicles get given to other family members or sold to other people and that’s when the issue comes up again. So to answer the question....yes you can, but should you is the next question you need to ask yourself. Thanks for asking and for watching. Make sure to subscribe

    So glad I found this page. My wife called today from her 2016 Jeep GC and said low oil pressure light just came on. I said pull over and shut it down. I drove 8 miles to meet her and oil was all underneath the car. No oil on the stick. Had it towed home and put a gallon back in, just to drive it off the wrecker and into the shop. Now it's not leaking (other than residual on frame/pan) Drain plug, filter cap, and filler cap all tight. Had no clue where to start looking. This video helped me at least find a starting point. Thanks, and wish me luck.

    I just found almost all of the oil drained out of my engine, and it's all in the radiator and overflow container. Thick, brown, milky oil and coolant. While the dipstick is bone dry, the engine compartment is full of the oily mess in the drivers front corner where it came out of the overflow hose. Is there a failure mode on this assembly where it could pull all the oil out of the engine and pump it into the coolant system? Or is a blown head gasket the only way that can happen? Great stuff, I'm subscribed and grateful for your videos!

    I recently changed my oil for the second time in my 2014 DGC 3.6L. Soon after, I started smelling burning oil and at first thought i had spilled a little oil when refilling it (I didn't, maybe a little when draining it however). The smell got worse and I took a long look all over the engine and found the telltale pools of oil on the transmission. I know what to do now and Id like to replace the unit with a Mopar OEM part. However they are on extreme backorder at the dealership (they have 31 ordered already) and I can't find one online. I purchased the O-ring kit today thinking that I could try this approach. I feel as confident about doing it as I will ever feel (until I actually do it), but I just don't want to put all the work into it and have it not be the O-rings. I had no idea I could damage the unit by over-tightening the filter screw cover either time that I changed the oil, so I could have easily done it and this could be self-inflicted. If it is, could the failure be at the O-rings or is the housing likely cracked? Is there an after market part manufacturer that you could recommend for this part.

    Based on seeing the full assembly off the vehicle and the plastic main body my main concern would be a stress fracture/crack of the entire housing body or crack around the cartridge housing.

Hate to cause some engine damage if there was some odd difference so I have been a bit worried about doing it. I know the newer version is taller at the filter location. Then you also have to be on your game as far as using the right filter or if someone else changes the oil (them knowing it has been upgraded) and uses the wrong filter which is possible. Great video and helped me solve part of my problem. I have a 2012 JK Wrangler. In the process of changing the oil I removed the filter, when I turned to get the new filter off my bench, I heard something "crash". The entire center assembly of the oil filter housing had "shot out". Not just the oil pressure bypass switch, but the entire center "cage" thing. At the base was a large spring, so I put it back into the housing and everything seemed to fit together. I then found your video and realized that the pressure bypass switch had disappeared, I'm not sure where it ended up in my garage. I purchased the Dorman replacement, and put everything back together. The only unknown now is whether or not the center part of the housing is working properly. Is it supposed to be able to come out?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Morning, the center portion should not come out. When it does you cant reinstall it correctly. There is some sort of locking mechanism that keeps it in place and when it lets go.....you wont be able to reset it. I have cut one apart once trying to see if I could and had no luck. Not sure what affect it will have as it sits.....in a perfect world I would say replace the oil filter housing/cooler to be on the safe side. Everytime I take one of these older oil filter caps off I step back and wonder if it will spit something out...typically that bypass valve. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.

      You may have multiple issues. To start with the leak most commonly will be the oil filter housing/cooler assembly. Its very common on 2014 model vehicles. As far as the noise....thats hard to say. It could be a bad roller rocker arm/damaged cam lobe and it could also be a cracked flex plate. Time will need to be spent trying to isolate exactly where the noise is coming from. Thanks for watching and for the question. Make sure to subscribe.

      I havent seen the wrong filter cause the coolant and oil to mix. The only thing that usually causes that is a failure oil cooler. If an oil changer screws anything up it will usually cause an oil leak or check engine light. Based on the oil in the coolant......I dont feel they caused it. Thats just my opinion. Where is located.....they cant get access to it do any damage....it would be an internal failure. Doesnt mean that they didnt install the wrong filter but just not coolant related.

AND the mast/cage/tube that is anchored at the bottom of the filter housing and the large spring had popped out too. Can’t get them to seat properly. Have the Dorman part installed no problem. It can’t compress the large spring and get the plastic tube to lock it down. I did hold it together and carefully screwed on the cap over the filter and mast/tube assembly. Not sure is anything is getting filtered. Pressure about 32 when warm and at idle. Pressure up in 70 range at Wide Ooen Throttle. But quickly comes back down to 35 while doing 45 around town. Any thoughts on how long this might last? 90k miles on the van. Thanks

    Great Video. I have a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 3.6L V6. Changed out the alternator and then started getting the code P06DA related to the Engine oil pressure control circuit. When I searched for this code on you tube your video came up. Crazy thing is everything is reading fine on the oil pressure and oil temp. I had a diagnostic run and they said the oil pump was a dual speed oil pump and it is coming on at 1500 RPMs but is supposed to turn on at 3000 RPMS. Belief is the oil pump solenoid is bad. They are recommending replacing the entire oil pump. Could this just be a loose cable from when the solenoid was changed? Is there anyway to replace the solenoid without having to replace the entire pump? Any advice or pictures on location for the pump would be greatly appreciated.

    • @MotorCityMechanic

      I recommend double checking your work. Reason I say that is because the connector for the pump is on the same side of the block as the alternator....they are only a few inches away from each other. look just above the oil pan on the passenger side about 2 inches back. Make you didnt damage it during the alternator replacement.

    Perfect solution The shop was about to replace the oil sender and I found your videos. It was the wrong filter from Napa just as you said. I replaced it with the correct filter and all light are gone and the Van is not in limp mode anymore. You saved me 300$ as it was going in for repair this afternoon. I learnt a lesson not to trust the parts stores computer when you ask for something it might not be correct. Thanks again

    my sons 2016 Ram 1500 has the Pentastar V6 that the dealer has been doing 90% the oil changes. He just finished changing the oil yesterday and he said the oil filter cap doesn't ever tighten up?? Says it isn't leaking but that thing is under pressure and I know the O-ring is actually the seal but I worry about it nat tightening up. No prob or needs new housing?? Cap threads look good??

    I finally replaced mine with an AL unit from Amazon. Put in a the 2014 style filter. Thought it would not fit in between the cylinder heads due to the cap on one of the casting plugs. But it went in! Old plastic unit had a bad O-ring on the oil supply tube, about a quart of oil in the galley. All the plastic clips are a PITA and some important ones break! Just so you are aware, purge hose broke in half due to brittleness.

    I have 2012 challenger 3.6l. I changed the water pump, gasket, and thermostat this past October. Just last week, my car started overheating. Noticed I lost coolant. Topped it off a few days ago, and noticed today it’s low again. I noticed some gushing sounds from right under where the oil filter housing is and noticed some dark “stains” right under it with my flashlight. What could be the most common problem?? Thanks

    Ran into that bypass valve issue hit me in the face when changing wife’s oil, luckily Dorman makes a new valve and spring kit, the new oil cooler housing is it the newer style on the 2014+ or same style as the one before thanks

      Not sure if you have seen all my related videos to this issue......that dorman part, that was me lol. I contacted them and after a few months they agreed it was needed and started making them. There will always be a difference between the 2011-2013 and the 2014 and newer versions. Even the replacements will be the same design as the original but most likely updated. That way the wrong filters dont get installed....got to keep everything the same for that reason. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe.

      @@MotorCityMechanic Thank you for making this video. I had recently had my car serviced and noticed that the bypass valve was missing. I don’t know when or where it happened but thankfully I wasn’t driving the car long so I just went to advance auto parts and bought the replacement bypass valve and a new oil filter. Thankfully I checked the oil filter because they tried to give me the wrong oil filter

    Well shoot this why I have oil on the ground. I keep finding problems, & common problems with my used dodge caravan...they don't seem reliable. Even put $300 in the part for a refurbished tpm board brain, while everyone else wanted $500-$900!

    Hey so I got the p06DD code on a 2012 Chrysler 3.6. It was missing the bypass valve spring and the filter wasn’t oem. After correcting that problem I cleared the light and did the drive cycle to clear the hard code. It cleared but came back like 20 min. Later. The oil pressure is within specs. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hey I have a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L and I went to the dealership for an oil change. They told me I had a broken oil cooler and refused to change my oil. I’ve been driving around for about 7 months with the same oil! I was told if they don’t replace it that oil will just leak out since the cooler is broken. I’ve never once seen any oil leak or anything under my car. What would you recommend?? Thanks

    2014 Dodge Challenger sxt 6cil.
    Quick question, my car overheated yesterday, and i was about a block away from a water hose. drove there and sprayed the radiator for a couple of minutes, with car running. since i had a towel in my trunk i used it to open the coolant cap carefully, letting pressure out. it took maybe 2 minutes. nothing burst up like vapor or anything which was weird for me. after taking the towel off i noticed a milky chocolate liquid coming from the cooler reservoir. I saw a few videos, read a few articles, and spoke to a couple of friends, getting different answers. I checked the engine oil dip stick and cap, no milky stuff. just regular oil. someone mentioned that if its clean it might be the engine oil cooler......Now, my question: is this true? or will it be head gaskets? any info w help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead for your time....

    Ok so my oil housing unit was leaking oil so I had to replace it. Now prior to taking it out, I had no check engine or codes for the car. I go to hook all sensors back up and notice the pressure sensor they sent me didn’t fit, so I put the old one on new housing. Now I have a code, for oil pump change po5dd or something like that? I’m thinking it’s the sensor that’s not reading correctly. As I’m driving my oil pressure fluctuates anywhere from 7-40 psi. But when I’ve driven enough to warm the oil, and only while I’m at a complete stop will it drop to 4 psi and the low oil pressure warning comes on. Im thinking it’s got to b the old sensor right? But before I do that I will check my filter.

    Thanks alot for this video! Since the oil filter cap relies on the o-ring for sealing and not the threads, would you say perhaps it would be a good idea to simply not tighten the cap down all the way each time you do an oil change to mitigate against overtightening issues and risk breaking the canider?

    Hi first time seeing your videos I am a new subscriber. Thank you for the great free information. I had one question did you ever make a video changing the actual oil pump. I have a 2014 300 base model that might need replacing.

    What is the average cost to replace the whole unit. I’m leaking bad. I put stop leak in, and a month later My oil was low again. I have the same oil leak spots down around the filter and on the other side of the engine where the transmission is. I also have a coolant leak in the same area. Actually I had the coolant leak first. I put coolant stop leak in the reservoir and that slowed it down considerably. But then the oil started leaking after I had my oil changed about 6mths ago. I figured maybe they cracked the housing because they were training a new guy who seemed to have a mental disability. But I don’t think it’s cracked. I think it’s exactly what is happening with all 3.6l pentastar. I have a 2014 journey sxt. How much is it to get this fixed? I’m in Canada 🇨🇦

    I was wandering from where the engine is getting some oil stains. I have 115000 miles and this is the first time that I change oil on it, it was always done at the dealership. I found the plastic cover cracked and slightly loose and there is no pressure valve in at all.
    I wander how long it has been that way.
    Thank you for your great advice.
