Well - I was there. In the beginning of this recital you may spot my head lighting up as no. 4 or 5 from the left. I was 16 and very careful of the whirl at the back of my head. This was an incredible evening at Hotel Isefjord in Holbæk, Denmark, and I was in my first grade at highscool. The reputation of this jazz club must have been substantial in order to get musicians like this to play. The event was recorded by Danish TV, and the atmosphere was stunning. I am sure you can hear the build up if inrensity, culminating with the versions of To-Night from West Side Story, C-jam Blues and Hymn to Freedom. At 37.15 a strange applause suddenly appears and the reason for this was that the michrophone above the piano suddenly fell into the piano (it looks like a Sennheisser, and you can see that is is missing afterwards), but nobody cared. For me this was the first meeting with genius and perfect pitch. I will never forget this evening, despite the fact that I have later heard Sviatoslav Richter, Paco de Lucia and other incredible performers.
39 yo. Oscar swingin his butt off. what a great vid. camera shots of his and Ray brown's hands...wow. i'm not a string bass player but if I was, I'd sure appreciate the close ups of Ray's hands. Thank you so much for posting this.
Does anyone know of any way to obtain a copy of this recording? I would really love to know if anyone has an idea, this was one of the recordings that really got me into jazz and I really treasure the playing here.
