What The F@*k Is Stretched Res And Does It Help You Click Heads?

  • So, it’s very likely that, if you’ve ever come within a country mile of a competitive shooter, you’ve had some sweaty try-hard try to evangelize the benefits of stretching your monitor’s resolution.
    From 4:3 to 16:10 to 5:4, everybody who’s anybody is doing it: s1mple, Beaulo, even Fortnite players. Why? Because, in most top competitors’ opinions, it’s one of those things that just feels better.
    What we want to figure out in this video, is whether it’s actually better.
    Let's dive in.

    It could just be psychological. Having a bigger target in stretched, allows you to be overconfident and take more shots more easily. Plus, there is the possibility that it slightly adjusts your mouse movement.

    • @JerehmiaBoaz
      @JerehmiaBoaz ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's just as psychological as using a scope. You hit the targets more easily because they appear larger in your field of vision. It has exactly the same downsides as scoping also: you're no longer able to see what's going on in the periphery and movement appears faster. Playing stretched is image magnification just like scoping, the only difference is that it's on the horizontal axis only.

    • @JerehmiaBoaz
      @JerehmiaBoaz ปีที่แล้ว

      @@senzari It's not just "word of mouth", it really is easier to click heads simply because said heads appear larger on screen when playing stretched. Playing stretched is literally the same as playing with a scope that only magnifies horizontally. If a target is 100 pixels wide it takes up 100/1920 = 5.1% of the screen width unstreched and 100/1280 =7.8% stretched, in general targets appear 1920/1280 = 1.5x as wide on screen when playing stretched.

    the weirdest part about resolution though, is knowing what the game was meant to be for. the reason behind the meaning for stating or rather asking this, is because depending on how extreme you go with certain resolutions either stretched or lets say squeezed, the whole environment changes on that.
    you can get a truly stretched or rather wide view, or a truly squeezed or rather narrow view. the wide view being equivalent to a joke drunk/high view in a video game, or having motion blur, or something practically like screen tearing in the same view but not having any rendering problems. the narrow view having an alternate drunk/high view in a video or rather being in a room of weird mirrors, or viewing in some strong prescription glasses in an unintended way to see odd effects, or being in a map designed to look really awkward.
    these things can really change how the game is played, from making things really tall or really small, and pathways super narrow or super wide, movement of the character, view model, and visuals like crosshairs or bullets, etc. all adjust to it. you can move really fast or really slow, go really far or end up somewhere that seemed not likely with just a few key press away, you can take forever to look at something and feel sluggish or see everything but struggle to get around and, well either way, feel nauseated.
    im not sure how native resolution would fit into this, especially when concerning the different amounts of monitors despite their marketing, and this other point which may even be the reason why, is because pixel measurement are decided by the makers of the hardware they are portrayed on. pixels dont have a true measurement like non-digital things are given, anything can be a pixel and a pixel can represent anything (that at least is square or circle like and can fit on some kind of viewing screen).

      It's ironic that this is coming from a professor. These types of arguments are called *"argumentum ad populum"* , and they are one of the most common types of *argumentation* *fallacies* . They work by not actually addressing the problem, but rather reasoning inductively for/against it, because it's generally accepted or believed by the _perceived_ public. The problem with it is that it creates a loop/circular reference in reasoning, making this type of argument quite weak.

    Heard so many misconceptions about stretched res through the years, from those against it saying it "changes your sensitivity" to those in favor saying the target's become bigger.
    Both these things are only sort of true, your sens might be percieved as moving faster horizontally, but it won't be changed at all, if you have to move the mouse 40cm to do a 360 and then you change to a stretched res you would still do a 360 in 40cm, nothing is actually changed. And the targets aren't actually bigger in the game, they are still the same amount of "units" tall and wide. between this and your sensitivity it means that a flick that would would have missed in native wouldn't suddenly hit in stretched it would be the same regardless... Now the targets do become bigger in a sense as they are physically larger on your monitor, as in you can measure the difference with a ruler on your screen, but that's an effect similar to wearing glasses with some magnification, or literally putting a magnifying glass infront of the screen, or even just buying a bigger monitor.
    basically it comes down to a simple trade-off, FOV for Zoom... and in games like CS where most the fights happen right in front of you, most people looking for a competitive edge choose the zoomed image...

    Actually, some people in 1.6 (and older) used to "stretch" their resolutions by adding small black bars above and below the screen, old CRT monitors had a settings to gradually vertically compress the image.
    I remember doing this in ~2005 in 1.6 and i know for a fact many people in my town did this as well since we all played at internet caffes.

    Quite some points were lost, if you ask me :-)
    1. Gfx performance. Of course it's not the case of pros, but having less surface to render saves a handful of computations. I would expect also the framerate to improve a tiny tiny bit. I did it in the past when I had a low end gfx card, among other optimizations
    2. Why stretching does not improve accuracy? Because PIXELS are stretched, so also the mouse pointer makes bigger steps. Of course this does nto make a target easier to aim to. You could have added a small animation for that, it's visually very easy.
    3. Why stretching does improve accuracy? Because we are humans and we need to map small movements to a range of pixels. Just exaggerate: you have only TWO COLUMNS, each of 1 pixel. You need to click either one with the mouse pointer. Now make them stretch to FHD resolution, so you have two large columns each 860 physical pixels wide. The mouse resolution is still 2 on width, but is it easier to click on one of the two columns? OF COURSE YES

    1. All resolutions are completely preference based however widescreen aspect ratios (16:9, and 16:10) allow you to see everything on your screen as the game would have it. 4:3 literally cuts off some of your peripheral vision and if you are accustomed to playing 1920x1080, probably dont even worry about it. 2. Changing resolutions is something that should be done over time or it could cause permanent damage to your eyes and cause a drastic fall off in performance.

    Its not the aspect ratio that makes the difference its the resolution itself, try out 1280 720 or other low res on 16:9 or 16:10 with less vertical pixels and most of the guys who prefer 4:3 will be comfortable, the bluryness makes it more focusable and allow you more to get a tunnel vision, less vertical pixels let feel you get zoomed in and therefore better visability (not meant to be left and right visability as you would see more on native) , except that the feel of the pace would be slower is there almost none differences

    As someone who grew up playing cs 1.6 (1024x768)
    I tend to stretch all my games.
    Valorant (1440x1080)
    Csgo (1440x1080 / 1024x768)
    Tried alot of different stretched on fortnite as well. It gives you an advantage in every game I would say. Cus the game runs better on a worse pc. For example take the same pc spec and run valorant in 1920x1080 then try it in 1440x1080. You will have a clear advantage in how much better your game runs.
    Fortnite is a perfect example. Stretched made the game run way better than native so PC players who might have a slight advantage cus of specs compared to a console. Would then make it day and night difference in overall flow quality etc.
    If anyone objects to this comment please let me know. This are my thought on the matter. And at the end of the day, a game that dosnt lag is easier to play and more enjoyable then a game that does.

There is some truth to switching the model side, but it's not "left is better", it is rare that both eyes have 100% eyesight, if it is something like 99/95 than your left eye is the dominant eye, that means having the gun on the left would give you a disadvantage in reaction since the damn model blocks the view. IT depends on your eyes where it should be and not "Left is better" bla bla.

      I can confirm, it doesn't matter as much as most people think. Just changed my res to 16:9 from 4:3 stretched and I can confirm, I can still hit the same shots as easily as I did with 4:3 stretched. Like I played for 2 hours and still dominated. As long as you know where to put your crosshair, it really doesn't matter what res you are playing, maybe if anything it only depends on what roles you play and how you play, because the different res have different advantages. For example I found it way easier to track people and didn't overcorrect as much as I did with 4:3. In the end I would say 16:9 is superior just because you see more, makes you more aware, like the tunnel vision of 4:3 mostly really is just a downsite imo.
