WTF Is The Best Mouse Sensitivity?

  • If you’ve ever so much as installed a competitive FPS, there is one ever-present question you’ll never stop asking yourself: What sensitivity should I play on?
    From cracked high sens-kiddies to OG low-sens arm-aiming Counter-Strike aficionados, this might just be the single most hopelessly unanswerable question in gaming.
    For some players it’s what haunts them every time they hop in the server, causing them to smash escape every time they lose a gun fight.
    So, what is this so-called God sens? Well, let's find out together.

    Petition to please start using cm per 360 (centimeters it takes to do a full 360 in game moving your mouse from point a to point b) to discuss mouse sensitivity rather than eDPI, I feel that is conceptually easier to understand with a physical comparison.

    I learned the solution to this problem a long time ago (literally over 15 years ago), it's actually pretty basic when you think about it, and it's not a hard number either. Here's how you get the best sensitivity for your own setup:
    1) Figure out how much hand movement is comfortable to do and do quickly with your setup (this may be constrained by space if you don't have much room for your mouse, or it just my be a matter of how you sit at your setup and how your rest your hand on the mouse).
    2) Once you've figured out #1, tune the sensitivity in game so that, starting roughly in the middle of your available space, you have enough range of motion to turn about 210 degrees in either direction comfortably, and quickly (you wanna be able to do a 180+ some wiggle room easily and very quickly if needed).
    3) Once you've got this value in the ballpark, don't change it for a while. Give yourself plenty of time to get used to it, you need to (re)program your muscle memory and that *will* take time and practice. Practice for consistency first, speed second, if you try too hard to be quick, you'll be training inconsistency and which will lead to bad (inaccurate) flicks.
    The reason why you want the sensitivity only as high as is needed to do #2 on this list is because any higher and your just giving away potential precision for no reason, you don't need more than ~210 degrees of motion in each direction to comfortably be able to point yourself in any direction you need to.

    allow me to correct some points here:
    1) tenz edpi gravitates around the 300 not 900+
    2) you can do fast flicks playing in low sens, I play with 264 edpi in every single one of my games from valorant to overwatch and I can track with no problems.
    3) you HAVE to stick with one sens if you want to be consistent, aiming wit keyboard and mouse is a mechanical ability that’s why you use Koovaks or aimlabs to train your raw mechanics.
    4) playing wit the Highest sens you can without losing control is the perfect recipe to injures, bad habits and frustration, is like wanting to learn how to use a chef knife but instead of learning how to grab it properly and how to position your other hand over the food in a claw to avoid cutting your godam fingers!, you start chopping like a champ until it happens.

      Might not be a thing now but originally mice had "native" dpi steps be every 400 dpi. Probably would never notice a difference between a native dpi step and one that's not but is a thing. So it was 400 or 800 and some ppl messed with 1200 and 1600. Not even sure what dpi's are typically native now I like how 800 dpi feels on desktop

    • @ameserich

      They should be using 1000 DPI. Since 1920x1080 are the resolution, 2 inch movement = 2000Pixel(+80) and 1 inch movement is 1000Pixel(-80)

    • @clatzeo
      @clatzeo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      DPI debate is already over. The in-game sensitivity is what's still going to manipulate the DPI numbers, so now we are in the era of eDPI which is Sensitivity*DPI.
      It's dots to travel per 1inch of mouse movements. The more dots there are, the more precise the mouse movement will be. The higher the better
      The actual debate about DPI is related to "whether you need higher or not?", to which I say go for the higher number UNTIL the game cannot catch up with the precision.
      Like some games don't even have 2nd decimal digit precision. I have played Far Cry 1 and that game has a very poor sensitivity-controlling "slider" by default.
      To get very controlled cross-hair control, I instead have to lower my mouse DPI to the lowest number possible or else the high DPI makes the sens slider useless. It's like 1-10, but no 1.1 or 5.7 etc.
      So older games require low DPI to make the sensitivity-slider be useable. The newer games are coming with more "precise" sensitivity sliders, which can help leverage the more "dots per inch of movement" precision. And this is the reason that 1600 DPI is just what the folks lock-in because most newer games goes well with it compared to old games which were released on the era when 400 DPI was the default on most mouse.

  • @timplesko9951
    @timplesko9951 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    2:37 It's important to note that while high dpi can create noise and/or other problems, using a very low dpi can create pixel skipping; especially at high sensitivities. So try to stay somewhere in the middle. I personally think that 400 dpi, thought very common isn't optimal. Depending on your mouse you might encounter problems if you go higher than 3200 dpi. That's why I like to recommend 800 to 1600 dpi.

    Very good video. except for one thing:
    If you ever talk about sensitivity across multiple FPS games, instead of using eDPI and relying on the games inner multiplier, you should use cm/360 or in/360 as that is the same across all games. For example 1300 eDPI in CS:GO is about 4333 eDPI in Overwatch, while they are both 31.97cm/360, so it might make a little less confusing (I was probably the only confused person but still).
    Other than that I found this video really interesting. As an Overwatch player, it's interesting to see how a low sens in OW is high on others. For example s1mple's sensitivity is lower than the average Overwatch League DPS player cm/360, and just a little higher than the average Overwatch League Hitscan player's cm/360, while high sensitivity in Overwatch, like Pine's(Player known for his legendary plays on the New York Excelsior in season 1 of the OWL, now playing for the Dallas Fuel) sensitivity, which is about double than that of Asuna's or s1mple's, while simultaneously being one of the most insane Hitscan players in OW's history.

    I think the sens argument is especially interesting in games like destiny 2 where movement absolutely off the chain. Like I know people playing on everything from 500 eDPI to 3500 eDPI. And from what I’ve seen it works out for both sides of the coin. I personally operate on about 2000 eDPI.

      as someone who played everything between 600 and 2000, what matters is changing the sens over time to find the one that works for YOU at THAT TIME, for me every week I analyse my aim and increase or decrease my sens acordingly, and my sens used to be high, like I could do a 360 with my wrist high and still hit headshots like nobody's business, and overtime it went down to average levels and now increasing again, I noticed that I cant hit flicks anymore as I started playing valorant so its increasing
      and if you are wondering, for some fucking reason I can no longer hit headshots, I used to be simple and now I'm just a filthy casual, I just don't get it, I used to be so good and it hurts me knowing that I used to be able hit shots that I no longer can T_T

    regardless of your game, start anywhere between 25cm/360 (high sens) and 50cm/360 and you'll be fine. I personally never strayed out of the 35cm/360 to 43cm/360 range though. You can literally play any game with that and be good. OW might be 35, CS might be 43 for instance. Nothing wrong with using different sens for different games either. Pretty much a myth. Also fun fact: this range will be considered low or high depending on who looks at it. CS will consider everything here outside of 50 high, while any new PC player will think anything under 20 is 'too low to game with'.

    The idea that you need to stick to one sensitivity is mostly wrong because what’s understood as “muscle memory” isn’t really a thing.
    The reason why sticking to one sensitivity is comfortable isn’t because you’d have to “learn” a different sensitivity, it’s because having played just one sensitivity means you have only developed the mouse control for the specific arm, wrist and finger movements common to that sens. Mouse control is simply your fine muscle control when aiming.
    Different sensitivities require different mouse movements: the lower your sensitivity the more arm movements matter, while the higher your sensitivity the more wrist and finger movements matter.
    This means that different sensitivities are only uncomfortable if you don’t have the required mouse control for the movements that sens will make you perform when aiming. So, that disproves the idea of muscle memory.
    Now, the reason why you shouldn’t try to convert your sensitivity and stick to that is that by doing that you’re limiting the mouse control aspects that you train. So think of sensitivity as a tool when training: use higher sensitivities to target microadjustments, use lower ones to develop your arm speed if necessar, etc.
    I change my sensitivity constantly depending on whether I’m trying to grind a score or train a certain aspect of mouse control, etc. And it’s probably the reason why aim training has helped so much, because this means I haven’t neglected certain movements due to the “bias” a sensitivity has.
    We measure sensitivities in cm/360 because this allows to get a good visual idea of how fast a sensitivity is, lots of calculators online can help you calculate this. I personally train on anything in the 25-50cm/360 range and my siege 1x is 50cm, acog is around 80 ig and the rest I don’t even know.
    The point is, don’t ever stick to a sensitivity, the better aimers are good because they have the mouse control to do all mouse movements necessary. And different sensitivities help
    Help train that better*

    I also agree that your sensitivity should be as high as you can handle, while still being able to control the small movements that are required for your game. Everybody's sensitivity threshold is different, but identifying the highest possible threshold while still maintaining precision is important. You never want to go lower unless it's absolutely necessary, because then you're capping your potential.

    • @clatzeo
      @clatzeo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The same talk can actually go the other way. As higher sens loses control, lower sens gains more control while reducing the speed of your movements. The more control you have the more you can leverage it.
      This is the reason higher refresh rate monitors sell, because they give more control to make decision quicker. The same goes for mouse refresh rate, and the same goes for sens.
      The more control of the situation the better. It's just that Sensitivity has trade off attached to it.
      You are right about the potential part. If a certain sens allows you to leverage certain abilities of yours which can only be utilized from certain sens, then play to your strengths would be preferred in competing scenarios.

    I used to play CSGO with mouse acceleration on (by accident) and after watching this video I think it makes sense to actually use it. I actually got really used and good with acceleration on (take into account it was only on 1.05 or something like that). I was faster in game when I wanted to be (because of quikly flicking or checking corners) and I was slower when I needed to be precise. The more and more I think about it, the more acceleration actually makes sense. People always dubbed it to be "inconsistent", but it's actually just as consistent as not using it. You just need to know how quikly to move your arm/wrist, which basically just translates to muscle memory.

    In all reality starting with high sens or low sens is just giving you an initial boost to either speed or precision.
    Look at S1mple, Hiko, they are fast and have LEARNED to be precise more than even a lot of low sens pros, look at Niko, he as well is fast when he needs to be too. A lot of pros say to pick a sens that's as fast you can manage, but if you practice your aim and mouse control at higher sens, eventually you could even go higher and start working on that, if you wanted.
    Kovaak's is a great tool to help cement these sensitivities into your subconscious and "muscle memory," but picking one sens and expecting it to actually help you play better so significantly that you go from mediocre aim to great aim is unrealistic.
    Whatever sens you choose, practice it with aim trainers, takes time but worth the effort if you enjoy improving yourself.

    I feel as though you missed some pretty crucial explanations, like how higher sense can cause less fatigue or strain, while lower sense can cause higher fatigue or strain.
    Or also taking into account the shakiness of people's hands, because personally I play slow sense cause my hands shake a little.
    The video was overall great, but I feel like these other aspects in why people pick the sense they do were missed.
    I swear I'm not trying to be negative, it was in general a good video 👍😁

I told him to get a heavy mouse without ptf feet and he was able to micro adjust so it depends on setup I think the upper end of mid sense is better but preference truly is key

    Im a CSGO Player
    I tested all sensitivities between 700eDPI to 2000eDPI ... I've played with 2000eDPI for years and now I'm sitting on 800eDPI... For me, when you use a low sensitivity you feel you have a lot more control of what you are doing, but at the same time, your aim doesn’t improve, you just feel more control over your sens, it’s hard to explain, but i think sens doesnt really matter as long as you don't use a sens that is super high. BTW, I reached global playing with 1700-2000eDPI

      No it isnt just try swaping crouch and jump buttons and play a match you will know. It will take you days to adjust and get used to it. Muscle memory isn't about sensitivity its about game mechanics. Muscle memory tells you how much you should flick or move to aim and shoot irrespective of sensitivity.

    I run entry fragger in cs. 2.8 sens 400 dpi. If u have good mouse control use high sens. If you have bad mouse control use low sens. Slowly learn your abilities in aiming and fps adjust your sens to ur game. You’ll at a bare minimum get to above avg if your aim good.

    @S85B50Engine 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sensitivity can also vary on game genres, on arena shooters you might have a higher sens to be able to track while bhopping, and lower for other games.
    Players like JJonak play on crazy low sensitivities (above 80 cm360) while others like Haksal or Pine play closer to 5 cm360.

  • @watsyurdeal

    If yall want a real answer, the perfect sens is one that allows you to use your fingertips, wrist, forearm, and upper arm altogether in unison, in a way you feel the most comfortable with.
    So, in other words, a sens that is so high that you can only use your fingertips and wrist, or a sens that is only your forearm and upper arm, is trash. You need to use something that takes advantage of all the tools you have at you disposal.
