I bought a Mini for the first time. Had other iPads from the very first one, but they spent most of the time inside a drawer. My iPad Pro with Apple pencil, magic keyboard, mouse, ... it never replaced my Macbook Pro, and it was heavy to carry around, therefore it also stayed in the drawer. Now I want this Mini on my desk next to my office laptop, even my Mac, to replace paper notebooks, post it notes, highlighters, various pens and pencils. It's easier to place it into a handbag, scribble notes while working, and attending evening classes, supermarket shopping list, watch TV, TH-cam videos, read books, check e-mails, ... I'm still learning how to make better use of it with the Apple pencil. And I almost forgot, the cheapest Apple product to get into Apple Intelligence. So I like it 😊
I’m curious how note taking feels on the mini compared to bigger iPads? I have the iPad Pro 11 inch M1 and I use it mainly for heavy notetaking for class and have been eyeing the mini myself too, since I had the same issue as you: the Pro simply can’t replace my laptop.
I gave up on dual iPads. I traded my M1 11 iPad Pro to get my wife’s Apple Watch 10 which we got for $69.00. I traded in my iPad Mini 6 for the new iPad Mini A17 Pro / iPad Mini 7, 256gb, cellular version. The new mini is now my main computer and I do not miss the iPad Pro, I can do everything I need with the mini, editing videos and photos etc.
I love my mini 7. I bought a M1 12.9 inch way back and rarely used it. It was big and just cumbersome to bring about. Bought my kid a mini 6 and I liked how it feels. So now I have the Mini 7 and love it.

Steve, I’m in my 70s and let me tell you the iPad mini is much better for seniors with arthritis in their wrists hands or fingers. The lightness of it trumps‘s all since you can spread your fingers and enlarge what you’re trying to see or bold the text, etc.
@@FemaleVillageElder I take my iPad mini out with me so on Travel on commuting and my regular iPad is my couch iPad. The mini is much easier to use on planes, trains etc
I got the iPad mini 7 as a end all be all tracker, productivity, health (physical and mental), Fitness, and Financial. And its genuinely life changing, no longer do I have to go through a stack of journals daily and can take it anywhere with me. It also makes an amazing e-reader with low lighting and a paperlike screen protector. Also as an artist, I see getting a lot out of it, I don't feel like the lower refresh rate mayters because I'm used to a 2018 air anyways.
The mini is the best size for studying imo, since you can so easily bring it anywhere, and you can easily hold it in one hand without getting tired. But it's still big enough even for split-screen tasks. It's also the best size for gaming. Either when using touch-input, or various controllers. And when at home, it's by far the most comfortable size to use for anything you normally would use your phone for!
I love my mini 6. It is the sharpest of all the iPads including the Pro’s. The mini’s ppi is 327 ppi vs 267 on the others. And side by side you can see the sharper text. Perfect iPad for me.
May be concise but it seems very narrow minded and not understanding that not everyone has every apple product right this as they are looking to buy the mini. As someone who just has an iphone I wanted something slightly larger and portable but not intrusively large. Ipad mini is perfect for that. Not everyone wants a 10inch + device
My other iPad is a 12.9 which is way too big to conveniently and comfortably use as a handheld device. Buying an 11/10.9 would be smaller, but close enough to the big one that it would feel redundant. Mini fits into its own category for me. Although I would still prefer the perfect iPad screen size, the ultimate balance between size and portability, the 9.7” screen. 11” just makes things in portrait too awkwardly big (such as ebooks, and manga looks particularly ridiculous at that size).

I’d give up my iPhone altogether if iPad mini could do things like pair with Apple Watch or support CarPlay. To me it’s so much more than a luxury nightstand device. It’s my daily driver and I can’t imagine life without it.

Bought my iPad mini 7, came in yesterday. Also own a 2018 iPad Pro. Wanted something new to use alongside my larger iPad and my Macbook Air. Really like the mini! Ideal for notes, media consumption, view my calendar and reminders… gonna use this thing a lot!
I bought this as a secondary device for my iPad Pro, primarily as an e-reader and for news. Where I live in the UK we have apps for public libraries, so it is great for that. And of course we have very little sun in the UK so that is not a problem! 😄
I’m an artist who totally switched over to an iPad only workflow. I will never go back to a laptop. Ipads can do everything a laptop does & more. My iPad Pro is my main content creation tool, but when I really wanna travel light, I always grab my iPad mini. It’s the perfect size digital sketchbook when on the go. Some may feel two iPads are redundant, but they really compliment each other well. Looking forward to upgrading my iPad mini 5 to the new mini 7. Mostly for the use of the Apple Pencil Pro, but also for the faster chip, 8 gigs of ram & better form factor.
I’m a video editor who often works remote. I bought the mini 7 for multiple reasons. I love the small form factor to take it with me easily. I am going to use it mostly as a secondairy display since I often have to work from my macbook and use it as a preview monitor while editing.
I have an iPad Pro 11 m1 and use it with the Magic Keyboard almost exclusively as a laptop replacement. I use my iPad mini gen 7 for tablet stuff, gaming in handheld and web browsing TH-cam. It’s so much more useable than my skinny phone.

Good review. Wondering whether the hefty price is worth it in the 'luxury' and 'traveller' life - can do all of the things the Mini can, on my phone/iPad 11". Mini just a nicer size for reading and smaller in bag....
I used to be an ipad mini person when i was a teenager (that was when the first ipad mini came out) I could have gotten an ipod touch but at the time i could only afford one or the other with the money i earned from my summer job and i chose an ipad over an ipod bc it was way better for games, streaming, journaling, etc (the ipod touch was seriously tiny!) the ipad mini was the perfect middle ground for me, more portable than the regular sized ipad 4 but much better for doing fun things on than the ipod touch. I carried it everywhere with me for years and eventually i only stopped getting ipad minis when i was an adult bc the base model ipads are way cheaper. I have the 9th gen ipad rn and when i upgrade next year i'm thinking about getting the new ipad mini just to go back to my roots lol.
Im a truck driver and use my phone as my ELD. Ive been thinking about getting the new iPad Mini to move my work apps on. Also i already play games on my phone, so a little bit bigger screen will be nice and i think the Mini can fit in between the Backbone controllers

Honestly would love to it if not for the Smart Cover having a back as well. I miss the old version where the Smart Cover was a 1 sided flap. Keeps the iPad thinner, slimmer, and honestly doesn’t affect the durability.
For just a little more you can get an M1 iPad Air from 2022 and I would highly recommend that. Any M-series model will last a long time: geni.us/hbM4ciz
I have the 13" ipad primarily as a way to sketch and also read sheet music off of. But it still spends most of its time in a drawer. I can't wait to get this iPad mini now as I think it'll be a daily driver for me.
Mini 6 owner. I was thinking of two things before the 7 came out. Better display and Apple Intelligence. Without the display improvement, it left me wondering if I needed AI for a consumption, not work, device. So trying to stay with the 6. Will be interesting to see how much Siri improves without AI attached. Maybe that is a video if there is enough to discuss.
Do you see the jelly scrolling prominently on the mini 6? And Apple Intelligence usefulness remains to be seen. Will have to wait for the context-aware Siri next year.
@ Agree on Siri and my hope is that its ability to parse what I say gets improved, maybe not to the level of AI support, but less frustrating. I have never noticed jelly scrolling unless I deliberately look/test for it. With normal day to day usage, it doesn’t get my attention. Maybe I read slow. 😉
@@srobbins31Heads up, after trading in your iPad mini 6 at Best Buy, they will sell you the newer iPad mini for something like $260. For some, that might be worth considering. Enjoy!
@ that is better than the $230 the Apple Store offers. They must be eating a chunk. Edit: Just tried it and my 256gb with cellular gets $185, less than Apple.
The mini is my content consumption device/on the go remote play device for gaming from my PS5. While my M4 iPad Pro is my “computer” per say, I really love my mini more just because of the size. I only will upgrade to the mini 7 when the apple intelligence features are better for upcoming iPadOS updates. You did give me an idea for using as a monitor for the upcoming Mac Mini for a “Mini” setup 😂 Great video as always 💯
Perfect handbag sized device. I have a larger iPad Air and I definitely feel the weight of it if I’m holding it for long periods of time. Seems like this is a good secondary device.
I'm a new apple user, just purchased iPad mini 7. Can anyone give me tips oh how to use em. Thanks for your help in advance. And whats the best case for it,
I've got the 11' iPad Air 4th gen since 2020 and it's a workhorse. But now that I've bought the MacBook Air M3 that's a bigger screen and does everything, the iPad seems too big and heavy on the go..... so I'll switch to the mini...and the screen is just big enough for note taking, signing documents etc.
I was one of the first at my flight school to start using an iPad. It was funny watching the shift from “No way, it might explode!” to “Why are you still using paper? Use an iPad!” 😂 When training, the answer is in the middle: get used to both. And the mini with a sturdy case is the best. When you move on to bigger birds, you'll probably be supplied a bigger iPad anyhow.
Great review. I thought the “jelly scrolling” issue was a nothing burger until you showed how it might impact Ferrite podcast editing. Still not a deal breaker for me, but not as insignificant as I once thought One improvement I was sure YOU would mention, given your excellent demos about USB-C port implementation in the iPhone, is that the USB-C port on the mini 7 has doubled to 10gbps maximum (up from 5gbps). This new speed puts it in line with the larger iPads, which means you can work more productively with hubs and external SSDs.
The USB-C port upgrade is great for sure! But even in my workflows, there aren’t many times I’ll notice that speed difference. The most common use cases for the port for me is USB mic, HDMI video capture, and maybe a file transfer, but not large ones
I’ve only had a small trial with the iPad mini and ended up returning it. I really tried to see how I would integrate it into my day to day. Ultimately I often found content consumption just easier to do on my phone. When I need to do digital creator stuff, I end up on my Mac laptop.
You lose me when you say "larger screen." The iPad mini has always been the perfect size for me. It's big enough but never too big. It's CRAZY portable. It even fits in my jacket pocket. It's never too heavy to hold. It's the size of a half-page of letter-sized paper which is the ideal size for me. When the physical Home button on my old iPad mini with Retina display broke I seriously considered getting the iPad mini 6, especially when it came out in purple. But I decided to wait for the refresh and I'm so glad I did. I was really looking forward to USB-C and really, really hoping for Apple Pencil Pro support and we got it!! Perfect!
It's truly subjective since I edit so many podcasts on iPad and prefer the screen on the 11". for portability, the iPad mini is perfect and if it works for someone's use cases, an easy choice!
agree with your use-case analysis. A few months ago, i sold my iPad mini 6 and got the11” M4 iPad Pro . Love it. By the way, do you plan to do an update about your used Tesla experience?
I’ve got the mini 7, love it, but it has a downside compared to my previous mini 5: the missing home button. On larger ipads you would need two hands anyway to get to the home screen, but on this small ipad now you need two hands as well. While it is perfect to hold itin one hand. Also, the touch id in the top button is awkward if you’re using a folio. The edges of the folio get in the way. I have re-added the home button on-screen (accessibility feature).
I love the mini A17. I planned to give up my M1 11” IPP, but it still has over $370 in value to me, so now living that luxurious dual iPad lifestyle. Mini is outstanding for travel and generally documenting meetings and appointments, 11” is nice for at home games and reviewing notes.
Steve, a quick question. Is this iPad mini unable to read out announcements? My iPad Pro M2 on 18.0 will read out my announcements, which is very helpful to me because I can turn the screen off when I’m doing something else and still get my announcements. The iPad mini that I just recently purchased and is on 18.1 does not do that. I want to know if this is a feature taken away in 18.1 or is it just that the iPad mini can’t do it? If it is a take away feature from 18.1 I will not be updating my iPad Pro. But if it’s just a lack of the iPad mini, I can go ahead and update the iPad Pro.
Great review. Would love to have one of these but just can't justify the price on top of the 11" pro I already have. (And you're right, the 11" pro is just about the perfect iPad.)
The Mini rocks, I've had them all and it's the best as a true tablet. And if you need just one computing device, you need to get a MacBook not an iPad to begin with.
i was thinking about buying one of these for studying, but i have a pro iphone, wich has a 120hz display... then i have doubt, writing with the apple pencil and beeing accustomed to use a 120hz display, would it be bad to use a 60hz?
I have a mini six and if the screen was fixed, camera was bumped up this would become my main computer, but it’s not so I’m still sticking with my Mac and I am not gonna upgrade from the six cause it’s pointless for me
No, I'm not going to upgrade to the iPad Mini 7. My Mini 6 is still good, the battery last long enough. I use mine as reading and travelling device. For home use I have an 11 inch Air. My Mini doesn't need to be capable of Apple Intelligence, because it is not available where I live and my native language is not English, so when AI is available in it will be quite some time. I think Apple didn't do much to the new iPad Mini 7, they just give it just enough of a spec bump to make it capable of Apple Intelligence. So maybe in a year of two the Mini 8 will be much better for me to upgrade to, hopefully it will have an OLED display.
I have this new iPad and if you want to find the jelly scroll, you can find it but daily yes you can’t see it and you accidentally said IPod mini at 1:14 I love this tablet by the way great review.😊
First to comment I have the last gen iPad and the upgrade just does not interest me. I will agree I use it when traveling and for small periods of time here and there but use the iPad Air mostly or just use my phone for most quick reads. So mostly use it for a time waster with games but not much more!
iPad mini 7 won't charge my third-party pencil. My mini 6 does, so I know it's not the pencil. My 7 will pair with it. It allows me to write. I shows battery level. It won't charge it, unless I plug in a USB-C to USB-C. Took it to the Genius bar and they shrugged. I'm so glad I upgraded.
The magnets are in a different place on the 7 as it works with the Pencil Pro. That’s why the Pencil 2 doesn’t work. I’d assume your third party pencil has the magnets in the same place as the Pencil 2.
Other than the terrifying shots of the mini too close to the edge of the pool 😱… Great review w/diverse scenarios young to old size is the killer feature, and now much better battery longevity with 80% throttling options w/new chip.
Not everyone will want a large screen. I'm not a fan of apple products. I love definitely like smaller screen sizes. I have an 8 inch Samsung tablet, and I love it. I love how I can just put it in the purse I like to carry.
Honestly not happy with the new ipad mini 7 after 3 years of long wait. - Still 60hz refresh rate in 2024. HORRIBLE. - No stage manager support - Apple pencil gen2 is not supported and we need to buy PRO apple pencil for a non-pro ipad mini. - I wish they included a M series chip in ipad mini, would be happy to play extra price . - Same old design and no improvement in design even after 3 years long wait.

I connect it to a Dell 2721NX, I use Logitech keys-to-go and the Apple trackpad on the go, and when home an apple keyboard and the Apple track pad.
The mini needs stage manager for it to really excel in this use case I think.

Honestly would love to it if not for the Smart Cover having a back as well. I miss the old version where the Smart Cover was a 1 sided flap. Keeps the iPad thinner, slimmer, and honestly doesn’t affect the durability.
Those were nice for sure
Should I get an iPad Air 2020?
For just a little more you can get an M1 iPad Air from 2022 and I would highly recommend that. Any M-series model will last a long time: geni.us/hbM4ciz
I have the 13" ipad primarily as a way to sketch and also read sheet music off of. But it still spends most of its time in a drawer. I can't wait to get this iPad mini now as I think it'll be a daily driver for me.
That's a lot nuance. I can see you were trying to stay open minded when providing examples.
You definitely helped me decide, so thank you
Appreciate that 🙏🏻 glad it helped!
Enjoy!
Best Buy will give you 350 trade in for new mini I paid less than 200 to upgrade
@ that is better than the $230 the Apple Store offers. They must be eating a chunk.
Edit: Just tried it and my 256gb with cellular gets $185, less than Apple.
I also live the dual iPad lifestyle
I have an M1 iPad Pro 11" and the iPad mini 6
would you recommend upgrading either to the newer models?
The mini is my content consumption device/on the go remote play device for gaming from my PS5. While my M4 iPad Pro is my “computer” per say, I really love my mini more just because of the size. I only will upgrade to the mini 7 when the apple intelligence features are better for upcoming iPadOS updates. You did give me an idea for using as a monitor for the upcoming Mac Mini for a “Mini” setup 😂 Great video as always 💯
just got one today, I wanted to get a more portable iPad - as I didn't use my air 4 much as I found it heavy.
Portability is the reason to get it for sure!
What bag was displayed in the video during the "Who is iPad mini For?" section?
Perfect handbag sized device. I have a larger iPad Air and I definitely feel the weight of it if I’m holding it for long periods of time. Seems like this is a good secondary device.
The other title I had for this video was: iPad mini: The Perfect Secondary iPad
I'm a new apple user, just purchased iPad mini 7. Can anyone give me tips oh how to use em. Thanks for your help in advance. And whats the best case for it,
Great video, man! Also, you have a righteously sweet speaking voice, bro!!
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼 also, you can hear me on my tech podcast too! primarytech.fm
Is Stage Manager really that great??
I've got the 11' iPad Air 4th gen since 2020 and it's a workhorse. But now that I've bought the MacBook Air M3 that's a bigger screen and does everything, the iPad seems too big and heavy on the go..... so I'll switch to the mini...and the screen is just big enough for note taking, signing documents etc.
Use one when running to appointments and meetings. It fits in handbag. My ipad is too big.
Working on my commercial pilots license rn, and can confirm these are perfect for our chaotic cockpits
I was one of the first at my flight school to start using an iPad. It was funny watching the shift from “No way, it might explode!” to “Why are you still using paper? Use an iPad!” 😂
When training, the answer is in the middle: get used to both. And the mini with a sturdy case is the best. When you move on to bigger birds, you'll probably be supplied a bigger iPad anyhow.
Great review. I thought the “jelly scrolling” issue was a nothing burger until you showed how it might impact Ferrite podcast editing. Still not a deal breaker for me, but not as insignificant as I once thought
One improvement I was sure YOU would mention, given your excellent demos about USB-C port implementation in the iPhone, is that the USB-C port on the mini 7 has doubled to 10gbps maximum (up from 5gbps).
I would add students as well. Maybe not for all subjects, but this could be useful as a secondary device using parallel with a laptop.
It is also good for fieldwork, f.e. mapping or as control device for drones.
I’ve only had a small trial with the iPad mini and ended up returning it. I really tried to see how I would integrate it into my day to day. Ultimately I often found content consumption just easier to do on my phone. When I need to do digital creator stuff, I end up on my Mac laptop.
You lose me when you say "larger screen."
The iPad mini has always been the perfect size for me.
Can I create a digital planner on it?
You can watch TH-cam videos for journaling on the mini. I also want to journal and not sure if mini or air
agree with your use-case analysis. A few months ago, i sold my iPad mini 6 and got the11” M4 iPad Pro . Love it. By the way, do you plan to do an update about your used Tesla experience?
Instant like for the correct Apple Pencil direction!
What’s the wallpaper called?
That’s from basicappleguy.com !
I sold my 12.9 inch pro 2018 because it was way too heavy for my jointpain. Now I’m not sure if air 11 inch or mini 😮 I just don’t know :(
Steve, a quick question.
The memory on the new mini is twice as much as the 6 and the price is the same. I did an update.
Why the Hell 2024 iPad mini not equipped with an Oled display
Price at costco today was good. Upgraded.
Love my Mini 6
I have the 13 ipad but want something thats handy and easy to carry
I use my mini6 more than my iPhone. It’s just better for consuming content and I don’t need to get a pro max.
I have a mini six and if the screen was fixed, camera was bumped up this would become my main computer, but it’s not so I’m still sticking with my Mac and I am not gonna upgrade from the six cause it’s pointless for me
It’s for me! Too bad Apple don’t know it((
Nice review, thanks
PILOTS! Pilots use these! I love them for Foreflight
So maybe in a year of two the Mini 8 will be much better for me to upgrade to, hopefully it will have an OLED display.
was waiting for the up grade then found out that its basically not worth the upgrade.
Unless Apple Intelligence is super meaningful, which at this point is a hard sell.
You can bring it with you to the gym and watch TH-cam videos while on the walking machine
does it support external display & stage manager?
I like this video and I’m you 800th like 🙂
I can't find that interview with a pilot. Can anyone guide me to get there?
The ipad mini is perfect for manga and comic books. I do still prefer to read books on my e-ink reader but keep my iPad mini for manga.
For traveling it's a great companion for sure.
It's so small, compact, you can put it in a sling bag and travel really lightly everywhere with it, that comfort? Only with this Ipad
It’s true, portability is its undefeated trait
All I want to know is I have an iPad mini 6 and I only use it for comics. So I can’t see the push to upgrade
Nah don’t upgrade
iPad mini 7 won't charge my third-party pencil.
@@jackbraddick4029 Thank you
Other than the terrifying shots of the mini too close to the edge of the pool 😱… Great review w/diverse scenarios young to old size is the killer feature, and now much better battery longevity with 80% throttling options w/new chip.
There were a couple precarious shots for sure 😅
Heads up! Costco has a $90 off discount. Online only
I subscribed exclusively because of the look at 8:18
I filmed that like 7 times to get it right, glad it paid off 😉
Not everyone will want a large screen.
HORRIBLE.
- No stage manager support
- Apple pencil gen2 is not supported and we need to buy PRO apple pencil for a non-pro ipad mini.
- I wish they included a M series chip in ipad mini, would be happy to play extra price .
- Same old design and no improvement in design even after 3 years long wait.
It does feel like a prime device to get an M1 even, and after three years it would have been nice to see more significant changes.
@@beardfm Yes bro, i too was expecting significant changes. I have a old ipad mini and was excited for the upgrade , now have to wait for the next significant changes in ipad mini . If its too late than i wil have to purchase this.
I enjoy my iPad Mini 7, would of Loved it if they made a Pro version but oh well. Surprised they didn't go for an A18 chip. So technically this should of been released last year lol
Anyways I still enjoy it
yeah more bridge or railroad sir
The price of the big iPad Pros are irrelevant. The point about iPad mini is the size and weight and that’s it.
its just another mini 6 with a17 pro chip
Yup 60hz of refresh rate in 2024 is Big Disappointment
You didn’t just leave out mobile gaming….thats a crime😅
I use the iPad mini majorly for gaming and taking notes and I’m super disappointed that the Mini 7 is still 60hertz
