    Wow! Great stuff! I bought two pawpaw about 15 yrs ago. One died, the other has turned into a small grove in my woodline...but no fruit.
    I also raised 3 persimmons from seed found in the woods! They're about 4' tall, and been in the ground for about 5 years. I love this stuff, growing out of the way things!
    Tumeric, ginger, horseradish too!
    I'd love to visit his farm, and bring back lots of goodies!

      Hey there wild gardener! yes you should visit his farm. Oh and consider getting another pawpaw tree because even though you have a grove now they are all from that 1 survivor, 1 genetic. You want to be ready for when your preciouses are ready to fruit ^_^ Love your gardening enthusiasm!

    Osage Orange is in the same family as Che, that's why they are graft compatible. Recently they have even been put in the same genus. Osage Orange is Maclura pomifera and Che is Maclura tricuspidata (previously it was a separate genus, Cudrania tricuspidata), both in the Moraceae family.

      ahhh, thanks! It's so interesting. I can see resemblance in the leaves

      @@CHITheThirstyGardener The texture on the outside of the fruit is also very similar. Che is like a red miniature Osage Orange. But Osage Orange fruits are filled with resinous latex, even in their ripe stage, so they're not edible.

    Awesome! I was lucky enough to visit Cliff's orchard a few years ago when one of the newer orchards had just been planted (and sadly in early summer when there wasn't much of anything to taste); his properties and work are a huge inspiration. Wonderful people and very hospitable, I wish there was a farm like this in every town!

      awesome! better if you can find some now and put them in the ground by this fall. Call England's nursery, Clifford still have seedings if you want to purchase.

    lol; che and osage orange are the same family; just look at the fruits or leaves and you can tell the relation. never seen the wood but bet its yellow. i wish they would survive in nortern illinois; maybe i'll try grafting some to hedge like you did. cool idea.

    Osage Orange is in the same family as Che. Some consider them as even being in the same genus Maclura. So they are very closely related.

    How fast do the jujube trees grow in England and how long till they bear fruit..?

  • @grozny00

    What variety is the che fruit? I heard about Che seedless, cause he said that no male would be needed. Do you know which variety or cultivar that was?

  • @jamesbarron1202
    @jamesbarron1202 ปีที่แล้ว

    How would you rank each of those 3 fruit from best to worst. Favorite to least favorite. I started my Pawpaw trees from seeds I purchased from him. I didn’t have much luck with germination. A lot of them molded. Maybe I kept them too moist.

    • @CHITheThirstyGardener
      @CHITheThirstyGardener  ปีที่แล้ว

      Rate the Paw paw, Che, Jujube and persimmons? Oh they are completely different so it's just depends on one's liking. I grew up love eating Jujube so it has always been my favorite, but the Paw paw cultivars that I tried is right next to Jujube now. Persimmon and Che is tasty too, I wouldn't turn down the fruits but not on my top list. So how are your seedlings growing? I just started my first germination attempt this week.

      @@CHITheThirstyGardener I haven’t ate pawpaw, jujube or che but persimmons, figs and peaches are my favorite fruits. I would’ve thought jujube would have been your last pick. I’ve heard they taste like a mealy apple but not as good as apple. My pawpaws grow very slowly compared to any other trees I’ve ever planted and I have a lot of different fruit trees. I’m in dry sand and pawpaw likes fertile soils that stay moist. I water them weekly and feed them often. Better keep an eye out for mold on your seeds and spray with a water and peroxide mixture if they mold. If I did it again, I’d use a sterile seed starting mix to help prevent some of the molding.

      @@jamesbarron1202 My paw paws grow very slow too. Now! You got to try a good jujube cultivar like honey jar, sugarcane etc. they are crispy, sweet and way better than any apple (to me). The rootstock or Lang Jujube be tastes yucky
