      Which varieties you got?
      I'm getting 5 this fall to kick things off with: IXL, Allegheny, Susquehanna, KSU Chappelle and either Mango or Marshmallow (haven't decided yet).

    I wrap my paw paw trees with green felt in late September due to bucks rubbing on my fruit trees. It also protects the trees from winter sun. My trunks are perfect at the moment, hopefully they will stay that way.

    Silver is a better antifungal than copper , although more expensive. A silver nitrate solution might be something to try .

    Do you sell paw paw trees to the general public. I live down here in Vidor, Tx nat far from the Sabine river. When I moved here I was told that there were some wild paw paw trees on the Texas side of the Sabine river. I just haven't found any yet that's why I am looking to buy some 3-4 year old trees.

    The fungus appears to be a KSU problem. I don't see this in huge thick pawpaw tree patches in the wild.

      I've wondered about the same thing. I see it more in my yard trees than in the forest. I think it's similar to scab in apples. In a standardized orchard setting the fallen leaves don't decompose as fast providing a source of inoculation in the spring from the previous year's infection. In a mixed deciduous forest the infected fallen leaves get mixed with other leaves, buried in a deeper layer of debris and decompose.

    13:50 And the most important, most desirable feature of a future paw paw variety is (of course) on nobody's radar: Self-fertility, auto-pollination!
    You can get maybe 1 in 1000 people to plant a fruit tree, whose fruit they don't know, cannot buy in the supermarket. But once you tell them "oh, and by the way, if you ever want to have fruit, you have to plant two different varieties and must hand-pollinate them", the number gets down to less than 1 in a million, who might consider panting such a tree. Here in Europe we do not have the kind of insects, that pollinate paw paws

      @Ni-dk7ni Maybe in your country, not in mine. It's either a self-fertile variety or no yield.

    My pawpaws turn yellow when ripe

    • @WildPrimitiveSkills
      @WildPrimitiveSkills 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m not sure what variety I have growing on my property but they have huge fruit that turns yellow when they are ripe. These pawpaw trees are a little unique compared to most that grow in the wild. For one thing, wild pawpaws always grow near water and these ones are growing at the top of a mountain. This is deep wilderness so these are definitely wild. I’ve been teaching plant identification and education, living in the field, for over 20 years, and have been studying plants for 40. I’ve eaten wild pawpaws all over the country my entire life. In all those years I have never seen wild pawpaws growing anywhere but next to a water source.
      What I’m saying is if you want some seeds or cuttings i would be glad to send you some. I would love to see this Ozark mountains variety spread and improved.

    I’d think that growing these understory trees out in full sun would stress the trees.

    Don’t use latex paint on your trees!!!! That’s an old practice that needs to be put to rest!!!
    Use something natural like #ivorganics tree guard!

      Why not just use plants to provide shade for the trunks?

    • @irasmith2418
      @irasmith2418 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      paw paws crack their bark in winter due to uneven heating. Painting the trees with 50 water and 50 white latex paint prevents this winter sun damage. This is due to thin bark of the Pawpaw You should watch the third Thursday by KSU they explain it very well. Tree guards can trap moisture or end up heating up more due to the tubes creating a micro climate. You can use Organic milk paint if you want an organic alternative.
