I don't care who directed this video. Give the editor come credit in the description because this video is insane. I'm an editor and VFX artist and I watch this video all the time. Either he found a shortcut to make these cuts so awesome, or he manually did this frame by frame. If he manually did it......props.
I edited the video as well as directing it. I'm also the super expert lighting guy on the left holding up a light bulb and a plastic hubcap we bought off the wall of The Rite Spot. This was filmed in the corner of our old tiny office in San Francisco. The editing was done by hand in After Effects. We filmed 4 passes each of Rob and Aesop, each at a slightly different camera height and varied lighting. Then I stabilized each shot (I believe on Rob's glasses and Aesop's eyes). It was mostly stabilized by hand in the end. That's where a lot of the interesting look comes from - the eyes are mostly stabilized to always be the same position, scale, and rotation, so when they move their head closer and farther from the camera it affects the scale and rotation of the frame. It also allows to cut rapidly between takes because they are approximately lined up and you can still follow the action without it being too jarring. I added some extra motion and such on top of that, but that's the gist of it. The profile shots were stabilized on I believe the tips of their noses, one pass in dark silhouette, and one pass with some light. Because it is cutting so rapidly between takes, it's also fun to see the slight differences in their mouths as their performance varies between takes. The wooden bust on the left of Big Wiz is a portrait of Bruce Willis, carved in Mexico from a low res JPG reference. It's missing the wooden Chewbacca mask that fits on top of it. i.imgur.com/I5mrb49.jpg Thank you for the nice words.
@andrewhime Hi, I edited this video. We shot it in the corner of our office. We filmed 5 slightly different angles of Aesop and Rob rapping and knew we would edit it together in a choppy way to match the song, but the layering came from messing with the footage after the fact. Most of the footage is stabilized on their eyes. Everything moves around their eyes. From there, it just cuts between the different angles, changes scale, etc. Some of the same ideas were also applied to the Wiz footage.
Love the way it looks like Aesop is coming out of the frame at the beginning. This is very well shot. Oh, and best line of the song: Utter "Unto thee I surrender mine flesh!" She said "Put the yellow sticker on your fender - Next!"
My brother was watching a documentary today and I heard a few lines of dialogue and it was the sample @2:33 I found it! Mwahahahaha The documentary is called "Werewolf".
This was one of the best shows I ever saw in my life! It's in the top 3. Of course nothing beats Scribble Jam! Being 12 inches away from Aesop is one of the most intense experiences a girl can have! Props on the video editing!!
Love this song. I do kind of miss aes with more sampled beats vs. electronic. Still sounds tight but i hope they do at least have a few sampled tracks on their next album.
What I don't see people pointing out is that the editing really highlights the differences in Aes' and Rob's flow in the song. Aesop's verses are a lot more erratic and 'outside the box' when it comes to following the instrumental - he's basically creating his own rhythm in harmony with the instrumental - and the editing in his sections perfectly encapsulates that: almost every syllable results in another filmed take being placed 'in focus,' lots of shaking and jittery movement, and it uses a lot of overlapping multiple layers at once. In contrast, Rob's verses more closely follow the rhythm of the instrumental, and so the editing on his parts holds the same take as a continuous shot for multiple words, with other takes only being occasionally overlayed for emphasis, the movement and rotation of each frame is a lot smoother, and mostly having only one layer overlapping the 'main' one. Both are absolutely phenomenal, but I absolutely love this detail - it really makes you appreciate each one more when you have this kind of visualization of their flow. Great music video, great song, great artists!
I've thought about this too, and wondered how intentional it was. Aes definitely gets a greater amount of/more frequent cuts, but I also wondered how much of that is down to them dancing differently? Maybe Aes was just doing a lot more, and rob was a little more chill. It could be that the editor worked with what he got and that's what led to the difference we see. I gotta say though, the first few times I was definitely thinking "Why doesn't Rob get as many cool cuts?" Either way, I think you're right, it fits each and compliments the respective verses incredibly well (which their dancing of course would). The end result is right up there, possibly my favorite music video of all time.
@@Kellerw2000I actually think both reasons are related: Aes' choreography seems a lot of violent/expressive *because* his verse is as such, same for Rob's being a lot more fluid/flowy. This music video's been living in my head rent-free ever since I noticed this connection, it's so clever!
@@rainrunya Completely agree. Couldn't tell you how many times I've watched it. The cuts are fascinating, and of course the beat, rapping, everything are triple S tier in my opinion, even for these two. The absolute assault of internal rhymes on Aes' first verse just leaves my head spinning, and it sounds so, SO sick. And you don't find cooler cats than Rob, chilled way out, but still just firing off the sickest rhymes you've ever heard, and making it sound easy.
This is the shit. Rob Sonic is the dopest MC out right now with the sickest word play and Aes has been on it for decades. It is truly amazing how idiots can like M&M and LIttle Wayne and hate on this. This is the best Hip hop album in years and they are working on the new joint and I cannot wait.
Devin Menge Indeed I am. I know, I catch that a lot. I don't like Eminem. Never have. He tries way to hard. Just like Lil Wayne. Never dug a single song of his. That's just me.
Trying hard is a stupid reason not to like someone (although I'm sure it's not your only one), you're SUPPOSED to try hard. You don't have to like Em but don't disrespect him like that, he has 2 of the most widely acclaimed & influential rap albums under his belt & they both feature great story-telling, rhyme schemes, imaginative lines with vivid imagery & there is important commentary that reflects the time. Even now he remains skilled with rhyme schemes & energy. Just say you don't like him, don't call him an idiot just BC he doesn't make super underground poetry rap like rhymesayers. & don't put him in the same as lil wayne. That's too far man lmao
No, he tries to hard to be shocking and offensive. It is a good reason because he does it to sell records to pissed off kids. I know, a lot of great MCs love him. I just don't get it and I get tired of all of the credit he gets while artists A LOT better artists than him get shit credit and coverage because they don't sell as many records. Also, my complaint was people hating on Def Jux and Rhymesayers because they say it is 'White Boy Rap'. It has been going on for years. Eminem gets a free ride because of Dre, but is now where as good as El-p, Aes, Rob, Despot, or most really good white rappers. *Remember, in my opinion*.
I get what you're saying i still think it's wrong to dismiss an artist as shit just bc they don't do the type of style that Aes & El-P do, Em is just as talented he just excels in different areas
This is dope! Hearing this kind of music is why I started liking Hip-Hop. I love that these guys aint coming with the old emo rap love ballad music that is out there. Keep it up guys!
BALLASTATUS11223344 You gotta understand that this is underground music so to speak, stuff like this would never go mainstream in this day and age. @final650 I do see your point. But as a songwriter and lyricist myself, I also write shit that I have to explain to people sometimes lol. My point is that, in Aesop's head, these lyrics probably make perfect sense.
@final650 My advice would be to listen to it closely a few more times, over the next few days, and if you still don't get anything out of it, at least you tried. Personally, I don't know what they are really talking about, but I think it sounds undeniably dope. This song is based more on wordplay than any specific message or theme imo. If you're intrigued by this one at all though, I would recommend their track "Church Pants" as well.

Rob and Aes are the definition of talent in Hip Hop
This editor's skills are insane!
rob sonic is one of the most under-rated mc's.
dudes fucking talented!
He is great, but rapping next to Aes, you're likely to get overshadowed.
Heads up - Meter Feeder remix pack available on iTunes now! Video, original, and 2 remixes included!
YESSSS!! hail mary mallon is too good! im so glad i bought the album
RHYMESAYERS FOR LIFE
I decided to listen to their album again, i gotta say it's really dope
how does this still have 200,000 views?
this is one of the best songs of the first HMM album
Rhymesayers is easily the best label.
Rappers with real things to say.
It never fails. Since 2004, you always surprise me again with how much I love your music.
Aesop has the most amazing flow and the voice kinda' sounds like a trashed old school radio. GOTTA FRECKIN' LOVE IT!
This editing is absolutory nuts. Whomever was in charge of it is a master-craftsman.
that "uh" aes does before his second verse of the song gets me everytime
That's honestly one of my favorite things ase does the "hmm"s "huh"s and other things he just says in verses
dope editing!!! now this what i call music video!!
"age: a million. sex: drugs."
One of the fucking dopest videos ive seen ! the editing is amazing, and this song with it is just toooooo nice!
@DocMohzus Grieves is on RSE just like Hail Mary Mallon.
This is one of the best aesthetically pleasing videos rhymesayers has ever done.
My brother was watching a documentary today and I heard a few lines of dialogue and it was the sample @2:33 I found it! Mwahahahaha
The documentary is called "Werewolf".
dude... shhh
Word
Great work!
This video took a LOT longer to edit than it took to shoot it.
That's erratic.
Way longer, it's a sick edit though.
that's the "cost of doing business".
Shooting time: 4 hours
Editing time: 4 days

crazy good. props to the producers too.
Love this song, and video. Epic freshness.
Never knew there was a video for this track. It's pretty badass
This song, beat & vid is perfect.
"Uncle bobby blasted at the back of the wrong wedding. I came for the food but i stayed for the prom dresses!" -Rob Sonic-
Song is great and video editing is beautifully done. How does this video not have more view.
Love this song. I do kind of miss aes with more sampled beats vs. electronic. Still sounds tight but i hope they do at least have a few sampled tracks on their next album.

@bobbysonzarelli You killed it on this whole album bro, I'm disappointed in myself for not hearing you earlier. HMM is one of my new favorites.
@armassive then were is the instrumental please!
Great music video. Awesome shoot

@AFrame88 No complaints here. I personally don't care for the mainstream look of rappers. I dig the more casual brilliance of all the Rhymesayers.
Kauft euch das Album. Es lohnt sich auf jedenfall!
Dope!
awesome song and video, really interesting visually
Looks like about 5 vids ran smooth.
Hella cool effect. Great editing!

@armassive of course, you guys rock. one more question, are you guys having a tour anytime soon?
Aesop's part is about the DMV and Rob's is about (more or less) the Airport.
This is so bad ass, amazing video
listen two tracks of the new album for about 30seks. each -> bought and one happy guy i am now.

Coupe down to the brackish water
And a speed trap pro demasking marauders.

@TheWrittenSicness Thanks
