I love tennis. It's one of the few sports where we are as close as possible to the expressions of pain, defeat, and victory. We are spectators of a one-on-one battle, with no distraction or outside influence. Just two players, one ball and one court.
But tennis is broken. There’s a dark side that we rarely see: inequality, controversy, and divisiveness. It’s a sport that can push mental health to the limit. Let’s dive into it.
    ____
A previous version of this video had some bad humor thrown at Djokovic, which clouded the journalistic and research portion of this video, in which our team spent many hours.
I stand by what I think about Djokovic. I think his attitude on and off the court, his anti-vaccine stance, and his actions during this pandemic are a disgrace to the sport.

Tennis, MMA, and boxing have the same problems. Non team sport have the same problem. To make it you have to be the best or a controversial character.

[My comment on the original video] Your portrayal of Djokovic is so immature. I'm a fully vaccinated + boosted Nole fan who disagrees with Djokovic's antivax stance and dislikes his on-court meltdowns. Obviously, I wish he would just get vaccinated and go back to winning titles, but I acknowledge his right to not get the vaccine. I still respect Novak for plenty of other things like his mental toughness, flexibility, court movement, strength in adversity, charity work, compassion to help lower-ranked tennis players, and courage to speak openly. As for this video: Jose, nice job raising awareness on the wealth inequality in tennis. Terrible job otherwise. First of all, you exaggerate what Federer and Nadal have done for wage equity. Sure they got a 10% prize money increase in 2012, but in 2022 they actually seem happy with the status quo. Fedal, but especially Federer, have always fought first and foremost for their financial interests. Their behavior tends to support old money, siding with the establishment, and being a good image for their sponsors. A case in point - Fedal were among the last two high-profile tennis players to make statements on Peng Shuai's disappearance. They waited for everyone else to put out strong statements first, saw that it was no longer a controversial stance, and then released their statements at the same time. Second, you minimize Djokovic's role in the PTPA. And for what? So he doesn't look good and contradict your narrative? He cofounded the PTPA with Pospisil and they've received so much criticism and opposition for it. Like you said in the video, the movement would've never gained traction if not for his voice and influence. Djokovic is rich, he's world #1, he doesn't need to spend time trying to help players outside the top 100, and yet he still does. The PTPA already has the support of many next gen guys like Thiem, Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas, and Berrettini. But guess who were the most vocal critics of the PTPA? Kevin Anderson, Nadal, and Federer... Sure, poke fun at Djokovic for the Australian Open fiasco. But it's idiotic not to respect his efforts to fight ATP/WTA's wealth inequality and his greatness as one of the GOATs alongside Federer and Nadal.
[My comment on the new video] Caya, thanks for admitting that the journalistic portion of the video was clouded by your personal dislike of Djokovic, and changing the video. You can continue to refuse to say Novak Djokovic's name, but that still won't change the fact that he's done more than any other World #1 to fight for the welfare of lower-ranked players.

Well, put, Zorro. You hit the nail right on the head. I really was taken aback by Caya's approach here. His discreet slight of Djokovic is NOT merely of him but of every Slidebean viewer and customer who made their personal decision to not receive the vaccine.
This holier-than-thou position is something I expected certsinly not from Caya.
You make mention of a Old Video/New Video. I wonder where I am left confused, because, if this which I have watched is a new video, I find no difference in Caya's disappointing sentiment.

As someone who has had a continuously declining interest in Novak Djokovic over the years, I would still argue that all your points are correct. The fact that PTPA might be the solution, that Fedal spoke at the very last about Peng Shuai’s disappearance, that they both continue to propel their own financial interests… it’s all becoming really obvious. I consider Roger to be the greatest thing to have ever happened to tennis, but I agree that all your points are valid.

The problem is, in order to have a true test of a tennis match, the time needed to do so is considerable. Almost no fan will watch the opening round in a major. All the lower ranked players are soon eliminated. It takes hundreds of hours to cull out the weaker players. Only the last few rounds garner much interest. It's like baseball in that a few thousand people will watch a Double A baseball game. But millions will watch the World Series. So, in reality, about the top 10 players bring in the vast amount of the dough for the sport. If any tournament has to pay a lot for the lower ranked matches, the sport will just adjust to having fewer rounds and only inviting the top players. I'm a tennis player and tennis, in the early matches at least, doesn't have the grandeur that the last few rounds have. Tennis will never match Baseball, Football, or Basketball.

  • @Neo06666666
    @Neo06666666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

You do a decent job at breaking down the issues with ATP, WTA and Grand Slams events. But that really only effects the top 100-150 players in the world. Sure balancing out more payment at bigger events is a great way to change things. But you really addresses the structural and logistical issues that correlates to these issues with compensation.
Players ranked around top 100 of lower are not consistently getting into ATP events because they are smaller. ATP 250's only have draws of 32 players max. Sometimes with Bye's and WC's added in. Which means most players are stuck playing qualifying or Challenger events. Which pay a serious fraction of the larger tournaments. Due to lack of media attention. It's even worse for players ranked outside of the top 200 or 300.
At the end of the day the only way to fix this would be to completely restructure the tennis system. Because tennis is a 1 vs. 1 sport it's harder to have facilities that can hold larger tournaments with bigger draws. While in PGA golf events can routinely have 100 players playing tour events every week due to the actual structure of golf. Which is why it's easier to have fairer compensation models.
Payments structures defiantly need to be changed in professional tennis, but there are also numerous issues that come with tennis itself that are very difficult to change. It's not just the top guys wanting to hoard all of the cash. That's a very simplistic way to look at a very complex issue.

As a slidebean fan + tennis fan(love each of the big 3 in their own way and cheering on rafa this weekend), i'm honestly disappointed by the channel falling victim to cancel culture with how you covered djokovic in this video.
Anyone who's a fan of tennis knows djokovic is the guy who gets lots of hate (sometimes fairly, more often times not), but to skim over him so briefly when talking about PTPA is really unfair.
He is the guy who uses his fame to stick his neck out and fight for the even distribution of prize money. All while he was world number 1 and the biggest beneficiary of this unfair system! When Federer, Rafa, Sampras, Agassi were at the top, they did nothing substantial. And when Djokovic tried to do something, these other famous players were sitting silent on their high horses, not lending their support because they feared the backlash. Basically they were all smart enough to sit out of this difficult situation and happy to let djokovic receive the all the gunfire.
That prize money number you showed at 0:40 was significantly lower than what it was supposed to be because Novak himself asked for the reduction and asked for the money to be distributed more towards the earlier rounds.
Let me end of with a quote from Zverev about Djokovic and the PTPA “He’s a world No 1. He has made enough money. He doesn’t need to worry about that. He doesn’t need to worry about anything, but he does. He does worry about the well-being of other players. He does worry about the wealth of our sport and stuff like that."
So I know i'm sounding like a biased djokovic fanboy now, but i'm really just trying to say, give credit where credit is due.(in this case) And by all means take credit from where it is undeserved (e.g. doing an interview when covid positive)

But all of a sudden it looks like Pospisil is more important than Novak in PTPA. Also, he shows the footage where Novak breaks racquet, like those are his and Pospisils highlights, while RF and RN are shown while playing tennis. Total dissrespect for the G.O.A.T and it shows how much is the owner of this channel brainwashed, because if you think different than mainstream media tells you, you are immediately tagged as an enemy, even if you are always trying to help others and put them before yourself...

You mention Selena Williams' argument that women players should be paid equally to the men players, but don't seem to acknowledge (or did I miss it?) the nuances possibly behind this, such as men playing more rounds than their women counterparts, and men receiving more viewership (which is all that matters to advertisers, the people paying the bulk of the revenue). Paying women players the same as men players while these differences exist would be treating them unequally - women should be pushing to play the same number of rounds as men and pushing to improve viewership numbers in some way
Look at Ronda Rousey who outright said she understands why she wasn't paid as much as certain large male fighters

Maybe a controversial comment for hard-core fans, but this is my view as someone that used to watch tennis when I was a small kid, but don't watch anymore.
I use to watch tennis during the Borg vs McEnroe (1981 Wimbledon) time. Back when they had wooden rackets it was impossible to win a set with just servers. I think the graphite rackets made tennis more appealing for the non-professional level, but it made the professional level of tennis less interesting compared to the wooden racket era.

the entire video all I saw was top players get more, and bottom level players get very little. at the end of the day, it all boils down to how many matches did you win in any given tournament. you can go to a 150 tournaments all around the globe, but if you are not able to convert wins in those tournaments, it would be a waste of money if you played in 300 tournaments in a year. in 15K tour players spend around 1200 and winners get around 2000; 25k tour level players spend per tournament about 1500-1600 maybe (most provide hospitality so you can save there) and winners get 3600; for challengers tour, you spend maybe 3000-4000 (again hospitality provided) but winners get 21000 to 30000. the higher you go in tennis, the more you make. but the point every one is missing is those top players put in just as much effort, if not more to prepare and play in the matches, the only difference is they are able to convert victories in almost all the tournaments they participate in, or at least more than they spend. is it truly not unfair to those top players who work their butts off to convert wins, if you say I won't get wins but I still want a bigger chunk of the pie because I played in a lot of tournaments. if you played in a lot and you win more matches, would any of those bottom players complain. since the combination of ITF and ATP came in tennis has been fair to all the players irrespective of rank. the problem we have right now is we have a lot of players and not enough tournaments to go around. especially in the lower levels. that is why we are seeing such drastic differences in income levels. if we bring in more tournaments which will allow us to spread out the players more, especially in the lower levels the players will get more chances to win more and make more money.

The truth is that Tennis is a posh elitist sport. It can't be compared to Basketball, Football (I refuse to call it Sucker) or Baseball. You can't be discovered like a Football player on school court like Ronaldo or the likes. You need parents with at least a certain amount of means and connections that pay for you to play on an actual (fenced) court regularly and from a very, very young age. I live in one of wealthiest countries on earth, but all the kids back then who played Tennis, their parents had a house (in a country where most people live in apartments). There's no two ways about it: people who play Tennis enjoy at least some level of wealth above average standards. Tennis is rather comparable to Golf, and it's the same story there. I like your doc, and I agree that that system is broken. But all of these contenders had a lot more options in life (unlike many, many of FIFA's finest players), yet they deliberately chose this broken system over those options. So forgive me if my compassion is at a low level here. It's like thinking you can start a music career in 2023. That system is broken too - and has been for decades.

Wokeness and entrepreneurship doesn't end well. You can't have a business that automatically contradicts the beliefs of 50% of your main market. Business should be about serving customers, not serving political agendas.
Also, many of the ideas the "woke" left promotes are completely opposed to giving entrepreneurs the best shot. As a Costa Rican you should know that. Anti-business political ideas are a disgrace for new businesses and you should know that businesses need a free World. If you truly care about entrepreneurs why would you embrace ideas that limit freedom of action and freedom of speech. Main reason i no longer give a shit about professional athletes selling the fuck out. True they may make millions but they also have to spend those millions on travel and equipment as well as for intense training. They might look like a corperate ad but at the same time if you are in the high level of a sport you should get paid enough to enjoy life. That life will probably stop around 40 and you will need to hope you got the income to retire.

Didn't see the original edit (actually glad).
It's important when dealing with people who have gone down the woke rabbit hole to not be accusatory, because they are expecting conflict, it's literally what wokeness is built around.
It always comes crashing down in the end, if the purity spiral doesn't get them then the never ending "progress" eventually becomes too exhausting.
That's when you need to be there.

I don't get you concept of EQUALITY. the more effort you put in and the more wins you convert, the more you make. where is the question of EQUALITY in this?! how many players exit in the first round of a grand slam(around 70), and how many people exit in the finals(1). by your LOGIC should the tournaments pay almost as much as the winners or finalists to the first round exits?! so lets say about 1,000,000 each for all 60-70 of first round exits, out of a pool of what 60,000,000. and what about the actual winners of the subsequent rounds. they would get bupkis right. is that your concept of "EQUALITY".🤨

Djokovic is pro natural remedies + pro personal choice. He doesn't go around telling people not to get vaccinated.
Remember when he avoided doing surgery for such a long period between 2016 to 2017 and his game suffered? Nothing to do with him being an anti doctor or anti medicine in anyway. But just him preferring natural remedies as the first choice if possible.

Poor Djokovic! Spreading a deadly disease wherever he goes. If he cannot live with his decision, that is his own fault. No one (including countries) should be forced to associate with anyone who won't get vaccinated. Read Thoreau on the consequences of your decisions. He went to jail for refusing to pay a poll tax. His decision and he knew the consequences before he did it. He did whine about it.

The fact he choses to not only support but to lead the effort is absolutely praiseworthy. He's putting his reputation and efforts to fight for the small guys when he doesn't need to.

It's probable that many liked the video just because it's Slidebean. Statistically its probable that least 50% of your customers won't agree with your "know-it-all" approach to vaccines. There's no need to insert politics in everything. If your concern is science, you'll know that science is never settled. It's an ongoing perpetual debate. Science was settled during the Dark Ages when you couldn't question the authorities. Btw, talking about science, natural immunity is better than vaccine induced, you know it very well and the CDC finally admitted it. And if anything, the debate is ongoing and no one should force vaccines. Freedom antecedes government power, and you should stand for the liberties that made Slidebean possible. Many people in Sillicon Valley tend to be woke, but most of them do it out of convenience, social proof, virtue signaling, hypocrisy, etc. Many latinos do it because they believe the lies the Democratic Party sells. They have been promising migratory reform for many decades and they haven't done it even with full control of the government. Caya is a smart guy, I really doubt he really believes that governments should force vaccination on anyone. I really doubt that he doesn't know that natural immunity is better than vaccines. I really doubt that he despises the same freedoms that made Slidebean possible. Is either that, or a lack of formation on basic history, economics, etc.
