Many yrs ago I bought an old XR200, It was in poor shape. I tried to get the back axel out but she was siezed badly. I ended up reluctantly using oxy gear being careful not to melt the hub. Then squirting it with water after to rapidly cool it. It took several attempts and a lot of dead blows but finally got it. That folks is what happens if you dont lube the shaft. Ps I just bought the same bike as you with a lot of the same mods. A very cool bike.

Well done.. lol yeah going online to ProCycle can be dangerous... IT'S A DR650 ACCESSORY CANDY STORE!! I go on there for 1 part and ALWAYS buy a few
With the oil I put 2 litres in run for 5+ mins , let it sit for a while then check the level and top up if needed same as yourself.With the sump plug you can purchase a bag of copper washers off the likes of ebay and all you need to do is anneal it [heat to cheery red and let it cool] before refitting back on the bike. You could also take the brake calipers off, give them a good clean around the pistons with a toothbrush using brake cleaner ensuring the pistons come out and go back without sticking plus clean the pad retaining bolts and add a very light coat of grease to them before reassembly.

Copper is actually annealed by heating to cherry red, then quenching in cold water. Not like steel. The same goes to aluminium to.

Good video but I wouldn't stress too much over the axle bolts being dry, you only need a wee bit of lube to prevent rusting as they are a stationary component and it's the wheel bearings that rotate.

Thanks for the Video, I am an HD guy but looking at an 07 DR650 I found with less than 3K miles on it! I want something I can get off the pavement with once in a while.
Nice combo mate!! I am somewhat in the opposite position as you. I dont know much about harleys but have taken an interest in them. I want something to cruise around on. I love the look of the iron 883. But they are made in india? That disappointed me alittle. Any suggestions? Thanks for watching!
NzJohny ADV I did not realize for you it would be made in India, I THINK the all models sold here are assembled here in the US. We bought a 2000 model Dyna with low miles $4500 us for my GF. I would look for something like that to start out on, you would have about 1400 cc, and it won’t depreciate much more so if you sell it you won’t lose much. My opinion is based on us Market. There is a Harley YT channel called The Harley Roadshow from down under, seems like a good guy. Might reach out to him on a comment, he would be more knowledgeable about your market then me! Stay safe!

I normally take the skid plate off as it is a pain! Are you getting a magnetic sump plug? That's the same oil i use to i am considering a change due to recent circumstances. But am unsure on what to switch to.
I don't torque those bolts either tight is tight. But i do change the sump washer every time, i find it is easier to remove if changed every time i don't use the oem ones those got a big bag from china.
You can get 2.3 litres of engine oil in after an engine rebuild ;)

Chers dan!! Yeah there must be alot of oil up in the head that never comes out. I'm looking at the tusk magnetic drain plug now for the next oil change. I was using castrol 10w 40 semi synthetic on my last dr with no problems :) keep safe man

Why did you change the oil at 800km when the "break in" period says to do the first at 1000kms?

Good stuff! And thanks! Appreciated. I changed the oil early just because it seemed really black and I thought doing it slightly early wouldn't hurt. I now leave it much longer. About 4000km. As the oil doesnt get so bad now that its broken in.

Nice video.. i actually have a similar skid plate and i drilled that top hole a bit larger to fit the socket threw it with a short extension. Makes it that much faster and one less tool. Also order yourself a new *magnetic* drain plug bolt. Gives you that much more internal protection and they are pretty cheap
That is exactly what I was thinkig about doing. Definitely would make life easier. My next oil change I will be getting a magnetic drain bolt. Thanks for watching :)

(Do I understand correctly?) -- The wheel bearing grease is in the wheel bearing assemblies between the bearings and the rings, which he didn't look at (you have to remove the wheels to inspect them). The axle grease doesn't matter much, and only a very thin layer is needed
More grease the better. Can't hurt it
Hey mate, thanks for sharing this, as a noob am learning alot from yr vids. Whats yr opinion on changing the oil and filter after 100km to remove metal and crap from the factory?
Hey mate. You could do I went ahead and did it at 500 then 1000. Not sure if 100 would be enough 🤔 cant hurt it though.
So why don’t you ‘Mod’ the skid plate and make a hole in it do to can use a 1/4” socket for the 3rd bolt?

It's a little extra trouble, but I drop the skid plate when I change the oil. The extra effort is well worth it (no mess). Like you, I'm not much on torque wrenches for routine maintenance. There's not a worse feeling than tightening a bolt into an aluminum engine, and then feeling it get loose. That's when it's perfectly okay for a grown man to cry, loudly! But when I did my first oil change on my DR, I replaced the oil plug with a magnetic version.
When you took your wheel off, I thought you were going to check the grease in the bearings as well. I'm curious as to why you didn't, since the manufacturer is notorious for going very light on grease.

I will be dropping the skidplate next time that's for sure! I really didnt trust my torque wrench it felt like it was biting the steel threads of my drain bolt into the alloy. Next time I will grab myself a magnetic plug. Any suggestions? Off camera I wiped some grease around the inside of the bearings. I had footage of that but didn't add it my bad. As for the man made flu designed to kill off pensioners for governmental gains. Stay safe mate 😄😄😄

I just rode it as normal without thrashing it and without to much highway use. That's all I did :)

I took my brand new dr 650 with 900 k to dealer for the oil change. After changing the oil they told me there is something not right! They called Suzuki and opened the engine. They said the engine got over heated!!! While I took good care of the bike. Now they are waiting for many part from Japan to arrive! It’s back order. What could be wrong for this issue ??!
Hey Mate, Did you struggle getting the back wheel up into the brake pads? I just greased up my rear axel and now finding it hard to get the back wheel up into the brake. Any tips? I was thinking to use a jack to lift up the rear wheel and take pressure off the axel bolt. Cheers, great vids
Hey mate. Sometimes it can be a pain. Make sure the brake pads are separated enough for the disc to slide back in. It's all about jiggling around. The video makes it look easy. I just cut my fails out
Jeez what an ordeal. I have to do this on my Dr soon. Is there a way to do it without getting oil everywhere? Also, you said "wack them all off." 😆
😅... if you cut a plastic bottle in half you can get the oil to run down it from the filter. Seems to work well for me now.

Good bikes :) I bought it new in novemeber 2019. Done 1000km now or 600 miles .the engines are really good! Robust. Not the smoothest but get the job done
