I just replaced my front axle Icon coilovers after 7 hard use years. First 4 years were in socal but the last 3 years were in New England. Winter roads finally got to them and busted the seals. I upgraded to remote resi with CDV. I plan on rebuilding my older ones in the future for a back up. But long story short, I was pleased with the performance and reliability.
Coming from someone that does alignments and tires everyday I would say definitely get it checked out for sure, a good shop shouldn't charge for that, my guess is that it will be out just a tad but that is still enough for premature tire wear
I almost bought the icons but ended up getting the bilstein 6112 and 5160. Couldn't be happier. The reason I got the bilstein is because they have amazing reviews . Also icons leak often apparently.

I think that Icon doesn’t have the same quality control as manufacturers like King and Fox, as this seems to be something that happens a little too frequently to folks. I do think though, that your comments about ride quality don’t make a lot of sense. Especially if you think that the 5100’s are a huge improvement. I have to assume that neither of these vehicles see a ton of mid to high speed off-roading, if any. Any performance shock is really going to come into its own and perform its best doing the the thing it was built/valved for. It’s always very disappointing to see people complain about products that they were not the intended customer for. Chances are the Bilstein 5100 setup is going to be the best you could get for your needs, just because of how your needs differ from someone that does off-road driving. Regardless of quality, you are not going to be happy with high end suspension systems. I would recommend you sell your repaired icon parts and go for the more street oriented kits like Rough Country, BDS, or just more Bilsteins. Those kits are based more around the “look” while retaining a more highway-oriented driving experience.

Had to send mine in 2 times for service due to leaky coil over in just 30k miles of highway and occasional weekend trips. Now looking at a 3rd time and might do a complete swap out for something else for the 4Runner.
I had the Icon Stage 3 kit on my 2010 tacoma for 3 years. Had them re sealed 3 times. I finally gave up and pulled the kit. I just replaced it with an old man emu kit. for the amount of money spent on the Icon kit It has hand down been the most unreliable suspension I have ever installed on any of my rigs.
My icon coilovers just failed also on the driver side . I have. 2016 tacoma . Havent removed it yet but i will do it in the next couple days hopfuly i dont have a bad experience with the service . My shock failed and it has less than 30k on it and its not driven crazy at all just a daily driver .
As an icon boy its pretty simple - if your going to mob ur truck and push it a little and crawl on rocks- get the icons if you want a smoother off road experience. If you’re mainly daily driving it its not worth it and the bilsteins less stiff will ride better on the road anyways
Same situation to me on my 2015 GMC 2500 HD. Driver side shock failed after 1000 miles and was leaking. Contacted icon and they were blasé about it. Wanted a replacement shock but they require rebuilding. Took it back to the shop I had the job done and they kindly removed it & Icon picked it up & brought it back since Icon is not far from the shop and got it back a few hours later and installed again. About a month later shock started leaking again this time I put up a bigger fight and argument and a new unit was shipped to the store and installed. It’s now about 10 months later and it’s not leaking. Here’s the funny part while out on a journey on the Mojave Road ran into a guy with a forerunner who mentioned that his shock leaked and I had said I hope I don’t have that problem. Only to find it when I returned home. Additionally TH-camr Wonder Hussey also had icon and developed a leak and complained about it, and They found out and took care of her ASAP. Would I buy icon again not likely.
I have the stage 2 Icon on my 4Runner. Around 25k miles now with no issue. I think you just got a bad one. My experience with the product has been great. However like you, experience with the guy’s at Icon leaves much to be desired. Especially with a premium product. Much of this is due to the lack of man power. They really are a small company that needs to hire more people to handle customer questions and issues faster. Not to ignore the Bilstiens; they are great shocks with great support.
I have the same experience. I have just passed the one-year warranty, so I can only buy a pair of new shock absorbers, and refurbish the old ones and save them as spares. 😓
RC, Bilstein, old man emu, fox or kings are the go to. In that order. Icon didnt want a refund bc their business is falling apart due to their qc issue and service. So in return, they want you to return so they can service them and return it to you. But honestly, with that cost of the suspension, thats a gamble and a lot of time, money and work especially for icons. Kings and bilstein will outlast those icons, and are still rebuildable, but at a much more reasonable time or miles. Your icons obv blew too early.
Yeah well I've the Fox 2.5 RR setup on my '17 and they creak something terrible. The shocks were installed on the truck new and after 3 years they say the reason for the noise is bad bearings in the front, lower shock mount. I'm not the type that is super sensitive to suspension noise, but this is atrocious. Of course it's not covered by the 3yr/36,000 mi warranty because it's an aftermarket part even though it was installed by Kalispell Toyota! So basically neither of these two entities want to step up to the plate and make things right....I expect that the dealership will be worthless, but Fox and their $2500 (?) components don't seem to want to be bothered either....last Fox branded merchandise I buy, they should stick to making T-shirts and hats!
same thing just happened to me bro. failed in the same way as yours did. started hearing clunking and knocking sounds on my driver side and immediately looked for oil stains. the stains are nearly identical to yours. I've had them a little over a year
I updated my tundra platinum shocks to 4600 and made a world of difference (from the stock black non TRD shocks). Honestly I will prob stick with them, save money on fancy shocks and save up for a supercharger. Good brakes, shocks and tires make the practical difference for this daily driver
put 120K miles on my tacoma gen 2 icons 2.5s and no problems - 95% road 5% off. I put the 700 spring but its to stiff so I would say your right about icon being stiff at low speeds unless you can open the dials to soft
In my eyes, the Icon failing isn't the problem - The problem is clearly Icon's response or lack there of, and their unwillingness to just send a new coilover - which should have been over-nighted. You get the last laugh Mike - I'm picking out a full suspension right now for my Tacoma and before this video it was down to Icon and Bilstein. I was on the edge of being convinced to do an Icon Stage 3 with a set of RXT Leaf Springs. Now I'm going with Bilstein, Dakar Leaf Springs and soon to be figured out UCA's - probably the OME's. My stock TRD Bilstein gear has 100k + miles and not one issue. Thanks for helping me make up my mind - great video.
i have them on my 2020 4 runner 2.5s they are ok but have premature tire wear i called Icon and have yet to receive an email or call? i purchase the vehicle new from dealer with this kit in there had all maintenance done at dealer with red tape to go through because of the lift. i would def not do it again. high prices for no response or hardship to go through.
This is interesting because I have put 80,000 miles on my icon 2.5 coil overs my my driver side stared leaking around 6000 miles. I neglected it and beat the hell out of them as it is my work truck and I worked on mass grading job. My passenger side however just started leaking a month ago. I just had them both serviced. And just test drove it after reinstalling them and after a week of running the stocks I could say the ride is much better than stock. We’ll see how long they hold up.
Same experience as far as leaking driver side shock except mine literally broke into two pieces before I could even contact ICON. It started leaking at around 5,000 miles. Truck is now parked in Africa till I can find replacement shocks.
thanks!!! now im wondering about bilstein vs ome .... im guessing bilstein is the way to go because i heard the ome leaf springs they come with squeak idk yet. thanks for the video ..... also, icon isnt clear about how much they increase the trucks max payload
The Icon shocks (or any “rebuildable”shock) are intended to be rebuilt and revalved regularly. You could have revalved them to ride softer and fixed the seals for 30 bucks in parts. Rebuildable shocks are not intended for long term reliability, they are intended for hard use and tuning. You probably didn’t understand this when you purchased them. It’s like comparing a Toyota Corolla motor to a 700hp race motor. Yes the race motor will need to be rebuilt very often and it’s not as reliable as a Corolla ... but it’s also not a Corolla motor lol
Mike C oh ya I got that part , def too soon. But a rebuild is inevitable at any rate(5k-20k miles depending on hard use). Also that should have been a perfect opportunity for you to revalve the shocks to your liking (softer?). It would have probably been perfect for the street & dirt if you asked icon to put in new rebound and compression shims (60 bucks ?). The bilsteins on rough trails will let you down big time. Not enough oil to run cool and simple too small of a shock piston area for a 4000lb truck.
Great info mate. I was planing to get icon stage 1 for my FJ, but time to switch Bilstein now. If i choose 6112/5160 setup, do i need aftermarket coils at the rear? If so, which one would you recommend? Pretty confused with Icon, Ome and Superflex TT. And yes i do wanna lift rear as well.
Pphheeww, i had my mind set on the icon stage 2, but ive been talking to a few people on the gram and they told me to stay away from icon, they recommended me locked, radflo and another one i cant remember, but after doing my research i think im gonna go with radflo and much better pricing, i think icon is just to hyped. IMO
I ended up with Fox 2.5's and they've been great for 40K miles. Had 5100's before and they are really inexpensive for a lift but ride pretty harsh. If you're on a budget try to spring for the Billstein 6100's
At the time I am writing this message, I have the same problem. I only have my own truck for daily use and I don't know what to do 😢 if I remove the shock I won't be able to use my truck and I will lose days of work. Any recommendations from your friend? My truck has the icon system 3
I have a 19 Sierra top stage icon offers. I have had no issue. I do many raptors runs I jump the truck. I also have my truck set up for real off-road/Pre running performance. Many people get new shocks and go out and beat there truck up thinking it will handle like a raptor that is far from true. Not sure how much off road you did but non reservoir shocks heat up quickly and won’t perform the way most expect. They are also rebuildable shocks so if you get a leak rebuild them with tougher parts. Regardless what people say icon and kings are top of the line bilstein are still low level shocks in the realm of ranchos.
I didn't do anything that significant in terms of off-roading that I would have expected to damage the shocks. I'd say my 4Runner with Bilsteins has seen worse.
THANKS. DEFINITELY WONT BE BUYING icon or fox. Ben seeing they both start leaking under a year of use or jst over a year. Crazy considering how much you pay for them.😁👍
If you didn’t touch the cam bolts and the ride height didn’t change then the alignment is probably fine. I wouldn’t even have it checked unless you find it pulling or the steering wheel is no longer straight. If you’re concerned have Toyota do the next oil service and choose a dealership with the Hunter Check Drive system so you’re not paying for a service you don’t need.
Did the new icon last alot longer?how long has they been on there all together ?I have heard the icon leaf springs flatten out over time but I think most.progreasive pCks will.do that.this is the first I heard their shocks have issues but thetrs not much on em yet..i just bought icon rims and they look of good quality so I hope I dont have any issues..
That's some bad luck. I have an icon stage 7 on my FJ. It's 6 years old and no problems. I do wheel it. I'm not from icon just thought I would chime in as I have been happy. But then it's a stage 7 with by passes and 2 1/2 shocks.
Sounds like icons quality control is absolutely terrible. Lots of people are having this problem. It's insane that after 3 months and 2k miles you are having problems, that's just unacceptable. Sure some people say they are amazing but I'm not taking that risk. Almost ordered this product too, knowing damn well they have issues lol. Good think i did my research.
Buying ICON is expensive. Installing ICON is expensive. Having ICON leak after 29k... expensive and time consuming. Removing ICON is expensive. Not having your car for 2 weeks is expensive. Reinstalling ICON is expensive. Repeating the cycle after the next 29k? Thats right! Expensive! I don't have a garage. Can't work on it. The guy who answers the phone at ICON in RIVERSIDE, CA is dryer than s@%$#t! Indifferent, zero fksgiven.... he sounds like he is doing you a favor even speaking with you. The sarcasm is real. Only good part is, I have an OME heavy load just laying there. I'll be installing that. OME runs into 100,000k in almost all cases.
Mike C Hey do you think and I’m not saying? But do you think the leak was related to a diy install? Could anything have gone wrong? Are you running after market uca? Or have you come up w/ a cause for the leak? Not questioning your capabilities... but you seem like a honest dude. Just wondering...
I don't think the seals in the shock would fail due to a DIY install - other components maybe - and I'm sure ICON wouldn't have covered the repair if they felt it was due to poor install.
If you loosened the lower control arm, then yes you need a alignment. Such a shame that Icon is a such a popular brand and they have such bad reputation.
Can you provide a link to where and what package you chose to buy your bilstein 5100 shocks from? I would like to purchcase them for my 2017 tacoma short bed double cab. Thanks!
It's not a fluke the Icon looks cool but if you check the site they need maintaining every 20 to 40 thou miles. And they are very expensive. The heim joints all have to be serviced regularly. Mine seized and beat the aluminum rod ends and ended up being over 300 just parts for the bottom ends and heim joints. then the rebuild of the shocks was $1800 AND CHANGE. So no I would never buy this setup again at less than half just buy Bisteins 3 times and save money. The main part is the cool aluminum, and that's what wears out top of shock tops cracking, rod ends cracking or misshaping, reservoir rusting not aluminum just aluminized steel on the rears.Major downer if you plan on keeping you vehicle long term.Mine is a 2008 and still solid except for the suspension.
Ouch man sorry about the bad service and luck, seriously next time think about Ironman4x4, they are in your state and would have sent you out a new one right away.

@@matt.hartwig I like the kit and it was a good price. If you call them you might get more of a discount I did. It rides a lot stiffer then factory that's for sure. I let dealer install it. Total price about 3500
You made me not choose icon product again. Even if it's a fluke. They should have taken care of you since its fairly new. But having to spend out of your pocket and have the headache of not having a vehicle for 18 days, especially if it's your only way of transportation.
Did you just say decapacitate? Also yeah they aren’t going to send you one without you first sending your claim of a damaged one in first. Remember that they are a business not a charity and before you go on about customer service yes it sucks you had to pay to ship it in. I would say that they should have sent you at least a label to ship it in to them. But they also could have just told you to go pound sand and not cover anything since the install wasn’t done by a “certified technician” and because of that there’s no way verify that the damage was or wasn’t caused from the install.
did you get this sorted? im about to click the buy button for the stage 2 kit for toyota hilux and this has me thinking twice considering i cant just send it back to icon without international shipping and what not

Thanks for the info. I now will not be buying Icon's and will go with Bilstein instead. Thanks again.
Been running icons hard for 12 years, ZERO issues
I have the same experience. I have just passed the one-year warranty, so I can only buy a pair of new shock absorbers, and refurbish the old ones and save them as spares. 😓
dang well that help me change my mind real fast on ICON! lol! i was going with either ICON or EMU welp thank you sir #ICON you fuked up
great video. i guess i'm not going to try the icons now...... back to the drawing board.
I had the same issues with Bilstein. I had the 6112’s. Went with the icon 2.5s with external reservoirs.
same thing just happened to me bro. failed in the same way as yours did. started hearing clunking and knocking sounds on my driver side and immediately looked for oil stains. the stains are nearly identical to yours.
This was super helpful! I'm looking for a 4Runner lift. Was between Icon, Fox and Bilstein. I think Bilstein will be the winner.
Thats my recommendation. Would like to try out the Fox shocks as well but for the price I think Bilsteins are still the way to go.
Only issue is bilstein will definitely not take whoops like icon and they are not rebuiltable
put 120K miles on my tacoma gen 2 icons 2.5s and no problems - 95% road 5% off. I put the 700 spring but its to stiff so I would say your right about icon being stiff at low speeds unless you can open the dials to soft
I’ve had nothing but good experiences with Icon customer service.
Bruh, that ebay notification had me checking my notifications.🤣
thanks!!! now im wondering about bilstein vs ome .... im guessing bilstein is the way to go because i heard the ome leaf springs they come with squeak idk yet. thanks for the video ..... also, icon isnt clear about how much they increase the trucks max payload
Did you miss that they failed after less than 2K miles?
Mike C oh ya I got that part , def too soon. But a rebuild is inevitable at any rate(5k-20k miles depending on hard use). Also that should have been a perfect opportunity for you to revalve the shocks to your liking (softer?). It would have probably been perfect for the street & dirt if you asked icon to put in new rebound and compression shims (60 bucks ?). The bilsteins on rough trails will let you down big time. Not enough oil to run cool and simple too small of a shock piston area for a 4000lb truck.
I heard the same about Icon too.
Yes, you'll need either new coils or a spacer along with new shocks to lift the rear. I'm going Bilstein B12 coils on mine which should lift 1.5"
Mike C so at the front with this setup you can achieve around 2/2.5 and rear 1.5 right? Hope it levels the car as well. Thanks mate 👍
Well this answers my question 😊
Crazy considering how much you pay for them.😁👍
i was thinking to go icon for my 23 tundra now maybe im going to king or other brand? any recommendations? thanks
That sucks, hopefully the other one doesn’t fail. Icon down the tubes.
No ICON for me. Thanks for the heads up.
I did so I guess that's a yes
Read some issues about icon. alignment issues and leaks too.
Any updates on the new shock. Leaking? Looking at getting stage 2 for my chevy colorado.
Well not going with icon lol
That's some bad luck. I have an icon stage 7 on my FJ. It's 6 years old and no problems. I do wheel it. I'm not from icon just thought I would chime in as I have been happy. But then it's a stage 7 with by passes and 2 1/2 shocks.
yeah have had good experiences with Icon as well, but the bad experiences are always the loudest
Mike C
Hey do you think and I’m not saying? But do you think the leak was related to a diy install? Could anything have gone wrong? Are you running after market uca? Or have you come up w/ a cause for the leak? Not questioning your capabilities... but you seem like a honest dude. Just wondering...
I don't think the seals in the shock would fail due to a DIY install - other components maybe - and I'm sure ICON wouldn't have covered the repair if they felt it was due to poor install.
If you loosened the lower control arm, then yes you need a alignment.
Such a shame that Icon is a such a popular brand and they have such bad reputation.
Does that mean every time you grease bushing(icon says you have loosen the bolts) you have to get alignment done?
good to know
Can you provide a link to where and what package you chose to buy your bilstein 5100 shocks from? I would like to purchcase them for my 2017 tacoma short bed double cab. Thanks!

It's not a fluke the Icon looks cool but if you check the site they need maintaining every 20 to 40 thou miles. And they are very expensive. The heim joints all have to be serviced regularly. Mine seized and beat the aluminum rod ends and ended up being over 300 just parts for the bottom ends and heim joints. then the rebuild of the shocks was $1800 AND CHANGE. So no I would never buy this setup again at less than half just buy Bisteins 3 times and save money. The main part is the cool aluminum, and that's what wears out top of shock tops cracking, rod ends cracking or misshaping, reservoir rusting not aluminum just aluminized steel on the rears.Major downer if you plan on keeping you vehicle long term.Mine is a 2008 and still solid except for the suspension.
the rebuild was $1800? Thats insane, we do them at $150/ea for basic servicing
Ouch man sorry about the bad service and luck, seriously next time think about Ironman4x4, they are in your state and would have sent you out a new one right away.
One of my friends just put that setup on his Tacoma and has been pretty happy with them.
Hi Mike, where did you get the U type jack mount on top of your bottle nose jack? Its on the 3:20 min mark of this video.
SafeJack.com
Icon are junk I had the same problem you should of went with old man emu like I told you. I went with Ironman suspension stage 2 paid $1442.00 and got upper control arms.
How do you like the Ironman? I’m between those and Dobinson
But they also could have just told you to go pound sand and not cover anything since the install wasn’t done by a “certified technician” and because of that there’s no way verify that the damage was or wasn’t caused from the install.
exactly this
did you get this sorted? im about to click the buy button for the stage 2 kit for toyota hilux and this has me thinking twice considering i cant just send it back to icon without international shipping and what not
definitely have a shop ready to rebuild these shocks if and when they need it.
@@ShockSurplus unfortunately no one in my region can rebuild icons. Am i better off buying fox
Hmm... Looking at a tacoma that comes with a stage 3 icon kit, making me think twice about getting it now.
Would you say $1200 for a stage 2 with less than 5k miles on them is a good deal?
Never heard anything positive about ICON, always leaks and other problems. Not worth the time or money.
