Loved the Sesame Street theme rendition at 5:00. I really, really liked both pedals but the Tumnus is the one for me. Finally got one and it sounds superb. I like the extra highmids as I play a JTM45 with a 58-style Korina Explorer. The original Klon circuit was a stroke of genius. Very rarely one finds an overdrive pedal so versatile that sounds equally well with single coils and humbuckers. Thanks for the great videos!
The fact that you refer to yourself as "Mick du Jour" makes me smile every time! These shorter videos are a great addition to the That Pedal Show lexicon. Great playing and excellent tones, per usual! :)
Not to say that the J. Rockett doesn't sound phenomenal, but personally I prefer the extra bite and top end of the Tumnus. Spectacular sound and playing. Thanks, Mick!
@@stevesalazar8674 oh get off it. He's had the Klon for years. And they run a gear based show... what are they supposed to do? Bring in a Squire and a Crate and then that's it?

Wampler Unobtanium for the win every time! YAAAY! I have the Ge Tumnus...It Sounds so 3D! I bought it for 180$ - They are now selling on Reverb for 600$... Secret Combo: Tumnus Ge into Nobels ODR-1 in my Stomp. I cant find any other Combo in my Stomp that sounds so Awesome...
Thanks for turning the gain knob up enough to actually hear the diodes! So many reviews show Klon clones being used in the typical fashion with the gain below noon. If Josh Scott and Brian Wampler are to be believed (and I'm pretty sure they are) the clipping stage doesn't come into play until the gain knob is above 2 o'clock or so, and indeed you can hear it come in at around that point when you turned it up. So for most people there will be no point worrying about getting the GE version and just stick with the always available and just as fantastic original mini Tumnus.
I've been measuring a bunch of these klones lately, and it seems diodes kick in way before anyone thinks they do. Like 9 or 10 o'clock. At 2 o'clock it's the opamp (driving the diodes) that clips, and that's what I believe causes the dirty sound. The difference between silicon and germanium PN junctions is about 3 to 1 in terms of voltage, so that alone changes the ratio of diode to clean mix in the summing stage, plus diode to opamp clipping ratio. Both change the way a klone plays. If these ratios are not compensated for, then a silicon diode-based until will be harsher sounding and not as smooth.
great demo!👍 I was one week little late to the party and found one of the last available ones in a shop in Australia and had it shipped all the way to my home in Germany. I am glad today that I went the extramile (well 9000 extramiles to be precise). I think it is a stellar pedal !
I hate to admit it, but the Germanium Tumnus is the most transparent and classy sounding of all the Klones. Gained up, it boosts the natural sound of the tubes more than any others I've tried. Not tried an Archer tbf, but you can clearly hear it's affecting the tone much more than the Tum.
That Deluxe sounded GREAT gained-up! From what I hear, the Archer/Jeff sounds closer to what I would like. The apparently reduced lows and increased sizzle of Ge Tum takes it in the opposite direction from what I want and for what I would use it for
Mick - For one time in several years of watching (and also likely the last time) I feel like I beat you to the punch (albeit by about 12 hours). We shot out the GE Tumnus vs the Archer Select last night. We played those by themselves and into a Page through a pretty clean amp. The Tumnus is knocking the Archer Select off my board. The size is better and the tone is just as good if not better. Maybe for people who run their Ks dirty the Select would make sense because the LED diodes are pretty cool and give a little more headroom. I love the format of the video. Concise and right on point. Wampler hit a home run with this and running it into a Page makes you remember that it’s a great time to be alive and be a guitar player.
The germanium tumnus has been my main drive since a I got it. It just feels really good to play i use it stacked with my keeley super phat mod as my higher gain/lead sound it rocks
It's really surprising what a pair of 1N34A do for this circuit. I have a couple hundred ITT 1N34A and have modified a bunch of Soul Foods and other K types and everyone was really impressed by the difference. Mick thanks a bunch! Doing the same riff on each makes a huge difference in the test.
The Tumnus sounds great! I love Klon type pedals, I have two on my pedal board because I like the boost of a klon and use one as a boost but I also use one with the gain cranked as well. They are also great OD pedals. thanks Mick!!!
They both sound epic, but considering the current price on the Germanium Tumnus, I most certainly wouldn't mind The Jeff for the price savings. Thanks for changing guitars - was really good to hear it with both the LP and the Stratoblaster. I would of course be picky and ask for P90s, but in a less than 10 minute video I understand that's a stretch and understand why it didn't/doesn't happen. The talking around the pedals was great, very good video!
Same, checked my phone one more time before bed and saw the announcement so I figured why not? When I saw the resale prices I thought to myself if I don’t end up liking it I could flip it and buy several other pedals with the $ but then it showed up and within just a few minutes playing it I raced to buy a backup but too late by then…still, glad to have one. I use it right after my Lightspeed (at18v), I consider it one of the best drive pedals I’ve ever played. My board hasn’t changed once since it arrived. Hope Brian can source more parts to make future batches, it’s way too good to stay confined to flipper-world. 2nd hand prices are insane and off-putting but the hype isn’t a mystery, I genuinely cannot believe how much better my guitars sound through it, by far my favorite release of 2023
Yup. Same here. I ordered my direct thru Wampler to support the builder 1st over any middle men. I know it's the same price, but I'd rather see the Brian get all the money.
Thank you, for being straight to the point, for being honest, for being a good guitarist, for getting good tones, for respecting our time and not making it about you, rather sticking to the premise of the video/
The Tumnus is Brians' masterpiece in my opinion. He has basically improved one of the most sought after pedals of all time. The midrange in the Tumnus is more pleasing than in a real Klon. As some in the comments already has mentioned it is less ”nasal”. This Geranium version which I managed to het a hold of is even better. Great work @Wamplerpedals!
Thanks Mick, excellent!!! Takeaway - both great pedals. ALL O/D's respond differently to player, guitar + amp + vol + sound in your head, so try before you buy. This lesson from a man knee deep in O/D pedals. My O/D staples for 3-piece blues/rock covers band - RAT, KoT, occasionally LazyJ Cruiser + Magnatone Stereo Twilighter
The mix on the video was sensational, Michael. That’s as good as I’ve heard a klone (or a Klon) sound - not too mid honky or nasal. Great playing aside, this stuff works so well at 98-103db where you were jamming than it does at home volumes. And I say that as someone who has spent the last three hours happily noodling through a range of Kingsley, Vemuram etc boxes into a Two Rock and a Jackson amp, in stereo. Just too quietly. Imagine if someone who has never heard of TPS stumbles across the video. They’d be thinking, “Bloody hell, this guy making TH-cam home demos has got a crazy good music room!”.
My RYRA Klone lived on my board for many years, but a little while ago I felt it was time to move on to some new flavours and replaced it with the Keely Super AT Mod. Happy I did but there are days that I miss the Klone
As I’m sure you’re intimating, you can never really tell without a true, real-time AB. But there are things you do remember and it’s okay to speculate about those.
The Tumnus is awesome. I placed an order with Thomann on the day of their European release, gave them my money, then two days later they told me they were all gone! It’s already going for 3 times its value on reverb, many bought by folk who want to make a fast buck. Such a pity.
Archer Jeff Mod for the win, everytime! It ended my Klone search. The Tumnus sounded slightly brittle and thinner. The Archer was warmer and smoother while still bright and cutting.
The Wampler Tumnus Germanium OD is limited due to the short supply of NOS germanium diodes. Can only be ordered through the Wampler Reverb Store. There were two batches before and after Christmas 2023. You might get lucky if they make more later in 2024.
Not true. Besides Wampler's Reverb store you could buy via his website as well. Also, many retailers received some for resale. Such as Sweetwater, Andertons, & even Thomann in Germany had them for sale among others I seen when it came out.
The regular version of the Tumnus is great and the germanium one sounds killer, too. I didn’t have them at the same time to a/b. I wouldn’t pay the price for a used one but what a steal if you got one before they sold out
Love what you are doing, this video could also be called “ why do we bother with the whole Klon nonsense “ I hope it’s not just me but I’m thinking I’d like to go and make some similar noises right now 👍🎸
Missed the opportunity to plug into the Jeff and start playing the Archers theme tune from the radio 😂Thanks for using humbuckers, often overlooked with Klon-style pedals!
🎉maybe less is more? .somesthing about a classic amp and a great sounding guitar...i need to buy a shirt....wanting that pedal show logo only ...has that ever been a consideration? so when I travel...the TPS community will recognize it and say hey! BTW, Greetings from BC, Canada
I have all three Wamplers (regular Tumnus, Deluxe and GE). All sound very close at bedroom volumes, and I highly doubt the sound difference would be noticeable in a band/mix. The GE does feel different under the fingers, and I actually prefer the GE, but I wouldn't pay scalping prices to buy one. I got lucky and ordered one direct. I also have an Archer Select and Decibelics Golden Horse incoming.... I have a K obsession. And like many of my fellow pedal aficionados know, if you don't go last 12 on the gain (Wampler GE), you won't be activating/clipping the magical diodes anyways.
Just recently started looking around at Klon style drives, super helpful comparison! Very minute differences to my ear so honestly would be quite happy getting either. Gotta play them myself first though 🔥
One of the reasons I love a Germanium Fuzzface type pedal with the volume rolled off. It kicks the front end of the amp, and makes a midrange sparkle, just not as tight as you turn up. Both of these pedals get the job done. Sometimes you just need a lift in EQ and gain to cut through the mix?
Both sounded good! I have an Archer Clean pedal, it's a cool K-style variant. I don't like how the gain and clean signal gets blended in the Klon. For me, the best Klon clone would be the Halcyon Gold b/c the "dry" knob allows you to dial in how much dry signal is blended in.
Both sound great to my ears,(or what I hear through my phone speakers) but the Tumnus seemed to have a bit more presence, and the center frequency of the midrange seems a bit higher than the standard 1khz of the Archer. Great video, and as always, great playing, I love these Effector du Jour videos! Cheers, mate.
I dunno how Brian did it, but there is like little bit extra dimension behind this Tumnus. It was most prominent with the Les Paul. Like there is bit of ghosting behind or what. Not like the Archer played half bad, sounded also really really good ❤
Preferred the archer with the Paul and gained up deluxe, what a tone - and the wampler with the strat. The wampler has more edge for sure but something about the archer’s midrange seemed to work well with the pafs
That Goldtop 💛 Both pedals are fantastic but the Wampler seems to have a bit more clarity to my ears, Archer seems to have a bit more meat to it, I'd be happy with either though. Love these short but sweet videos.
The Wampler has an unmatched clarity to it. It also seemed to mesh the gain and clean sound in a more pleasing way- it’s for these reasons that I actually preferred it to my KTR when I compared the two. Perhaps I should just keep both on my board 🤔
Hey Mick, love the show that you and Dan have. I’ve been a big fan and followed for many years now that Tumnus sounds great. Brian makes some great petals, but have you tried or if you have not, please try the Warm Audio Centavo Pedal. I’ve looked and tried many petals and I know that a lot of it has to do with peoples tastes for sound but that pedal I think completely the Klon. Please give it a try. Cheers mate.
At the end of the day, if it inspires you it’s real good. Really cannot go wrong with three or four overdrives on your board. One Klon style for sure. Then I can play that board all day plugged into a class an amp!
A great demo, although, I would have compared the standard Tumnus with the limited GE version. My ears preferred the slightly more bottom end of the Jeff (by itself), but I think the Tumnus GE would punch through a band mix better. I was too late to score a GE, so I’m now waiting on a NÖTAKLON, which will be my 1st Klone type pedal.
I have both, they are slightly different, but I chop and change my mind as to which I prefer at different times. Notaklon far more sensible than buying a Tumnus GE used.
Yeah, when the differences are very subtle, which guitar is currently in your hands is probably a bigger influence to which pedal sounds best. And how much competition your instrument has to be heard. I do like the smaller size of the Tumnus, but not $400+ worth of like, especially when it’s benefiting a pedal flipper more than Wampler, or Klon.
@@garyletsch1070 if you like the smaller size perhaps just consider the normal gold Tumnus, I think that is even more similar to the Notaklon, but the Notaklon is fun to put together. My wife got me mine for Christmas and had my 4 year old son paint the enclosure, so it’s one pedal I’ll certainly never part with!
interesting tones - i especially like the pedals goosing the driven amp with the les paul speaking of which, that riff? do you have to pay royalties to sesame street? and on a more serious side - assume "blue" is safely at home? i know you have several nice strats now, but that was a very good guitar
The only thing better than a deluxe reverb is two deluxe reverb’s in TPS wet/dry 🤘🏽loving these bite size pedal demo’s leg ends👌any chance of getting madison Cunningham on as she’s touring with John Mayer on our side of the pond at the moment?
Wampler came across a bit more open. I have the Germanium Tumnus & the Way Huge Conspiracy Theory. They sound nearly identical. The G Tumnus has a slightly rounder note character than the Way Huge. But, both are great and I m keeping both.
My ears aren't great, but to me the mids are in slightly different places. The Tumnus seems to have the mids higher up (at least sounded that way on the clean example with the Strat). Sounds really nice.
I like the quickie format to spotlight tones And concepts. Love the long form nerd-outs too.
The head room, the pristine in the notes and the clarity natural sound of the Wampler Tumnus Germanium is just phenomenal...Brian is a genius!
For me , all of Brian's designs have a very special top end clarity. It's part of why I have so many of his pedals.
I totally agree with you!@@ronrumsey3205
Oh did he change the circuit up from the Centaur?
The pristine what in the notes?

Great video, and as always, great playing, I love these Effector du Jour videos! Cheers, mate.
Not only can Deluxe reverb overdrive it's also the best sounding overdrive a clean amp can produce. With the tweed Bassman right behind it.
That Goldtop 💛
Both pedals are fantastic but the Wampler seems to have a bit more clarity to my ears, Archer seems to have a bit more meat to it, I'd be happy with either though. Love these short but sweet videos.
For me on the lower gain I liked the Archer more a few times, but with gain the Tumnys across the board
I was lucky enough to get a Tumnus Ge in the second batch. It sounds incredible through my Mark V 90w!
Another +1 for the tumnus
July 24-25, 2024 Who got the Wampler Germanium Tumnus Deluxe? Sold out in a handful of hours.
The tumnus definitely sounds clearer and louder... just a sharper sound...
At the end of the day, if it inspires you it’s real good. Really cannot go wrong with three or four overdrives on your board. One Klon style for sure. Then I can play that board all day plugged into a class an amp!
I love so much my Tumnus Deluxe (gold) I need to try this one ;)
Excellent video. 👌
Seems like there is something special about the tumnus.
Tumnus all the way!!
Definitely the Wampler!
The amp for the win...my goodness
Nothing out of this world, sounds like a thousand other pedals
List them. Go on!
Exactly
interesting tones - i especially like the pedals goosing the driven amp with the les paul
speaking of which, that riff? do you have to pay royalties to sesame street?
and on a more serious side - assume "blue" is safely at home? i know you have several nice strats now, but that was a very good guitar
Hi John, Blue now has a happy new home! I am blessed with Strats and Blue deserved a new custodian. Cheers!
@@ThatPedalShow well, the new owner is a very lucky guitar player indeed!
Tumnus is livelier in the upper mids! It's fetching close to Klon prices already.
My ears aren't great, but to me the mids are in slightly different places. The Tumnus seems to have the mids higher up (at least sounded that way on the clean example with the Strat). Sounds really nice.
I think it's the chime of gm trans. I hear the same thing!
The Tumnus just seems to have a little extra sweetness in the gain to my ear. I also hear more pronounced mids in the Jeff pedal.
00:05:01 - listen to that shuffle blues riff now sing the Sesame Street them tune... killer lick!
