Most people say grunge died when Kurt Cobain killed himself. Others when Layne Staley died. But I truly believe grunge died when Billy Corgan went bald.
starting this show with Luna? a slow song no one had even heard? holy fuck ballsy in itself, but then to follow it up with *another* song that basically no one knew? damn son
man this was Smashing Pumpkins at their best - the songwriting, the guitar tone, Billy’s vocal style, the band’s aesthetic, everything. I really wish Billy and co. explored more of this style after Mellon Collie. I’m a huge ‘91-‘95 era SP fan, not as much after that. crazy to think in only 6 years they went from this to Adore, and only 8 years until they totally imploded
Aye. Once billy went for the Uncle Fester costumes, forget it. He really struggled with the end of the grunge/alternative era, which he saw coming, but couldn't weather. He thought he was owed superstardom forever.
That room is legendary and unfortunately the sound on recording doesn’t do the place justice. Metro and smart bar in late 80s and 90s was a magical place. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_Chicago
At their peak. Whenever I see the Gish guitar or the bat sticker guitar, I am sure to watch. Billy’s songwriting will peak later, but for live performances they will never be as raw and guttural as 92/93. The energy is unmatched.
I think this was the last show attended. I remember them showing up in dresses. It was a memorable show for me. I absolutely adored the Pumpkins.I still do. They are apart of my youth.......and always be.
Thank you much for this!! This show was just about a year before Siamese Dream I am guessing. Hard to believe I saw them when I was 15 ( 1994) and 44 years old (2022)

Deep thoughts 😂 real facts
The Smashing Pumpkins aren't a grunge band. Not even a little bit. Whoever told you that was fibbing.
@@boofert.washington2499 they certainly influenced and were influenced by grunge a hell of a lot
Nah. When he went bald AND slapped on the Uncle Fester robes.
And I think comedy in general got a nice kick in the balls the day you were born.

The majority of the songs in this set were unknown at the time.
And the crowd goes more bonkers than crowds do today for songs they know and love.

Dude, that setlist... Hello Kitty Kat, Bury Me, Tristessa, Drown, Starla, Hummer in the same show 🤯
yeah prime time stuff . Billy looked like Eddie Brickell back then !
🤣@@massive-omissions
literally 5 of my all-time favorite Pumpkins’ songs (apart from Starla)

Crazy to think I was 5 during this concert and now I collect this music in my 30s.
Brother…I was 6. 🤟🏻
Crowdsurfing to Disarm, now that's enthusiasm.

Wowwww the crowd loved hearing Disarm!!!!
Lol when they zoom in on James thinking he was playing the solo
Was scrolling to see if anyone commented on that.
Big Chief from Ann Arbor opened this show. Great band!!! The good ol days
Daydream so cute❤
Wow, I’ve never seen Siamese Dream songs played in the Gish era. It’s fascinating to see the small differences!
His vocals were so much better back then.
I Was.....ready?>>>>> There!
As was I :) attended two of the three shows. This is the only stub I have.
Class

I was at this show. Does anyone remember, did James Iha ride a bicycle onto the stage?
Do any of you think Loveless by MBV had an influence on them?
they had a lot of shoegaze influence definitely and that album is probably the biggest shoegaze album ever so yes i would say so
Undoubtedly, especially Gish. Also confirmed in interviews.
Fucking incredible
I remember going to this show!
Maybe Billy hadn't written the second verse for Disarm yet, he just repeats the first! I've seen him screw up lyrics a bunch too though.
I saw them in the fall of this same year, but alas they were no longer wearing the dresses.
Wow! What a week that was!
also, not sure what about fucking courtney love makes frontman guitar players wear dresses, but here we are. don't try to tell me that's a coincidence
Why is his Jaguar the “bad guitar”? And why does he use it on Starla? I’ve seen him use it on Starla for many different gigs…
Probably has an open tuning
were they high?
Yes
Eddie Brickel rocks !
