WOW. I can't believe this exists! My name is Cole, and I was at this show and it was INCREDIBLE. To say this was a super special show, is an understatement. It was the grand reopening of The Fillmore, which had closed after the 1989 earthquake that rocked the Bay Area. The lighting and visual show, as I herd it, was done by Pink Floyd's crew.
I should say that the entire night was really special. The opening acts were 4 Non Blondes, Ry Cooder and American Music Club. Only 500 of the 1200 or so tickets sold to the public, with the rest being for friends, family, press and celebrities. I remember members of the Grateful Dead and Metallica walking around the room just as giddy as we all were to be in such a special event. I was/am a massive Pumpkins fan and I waited in line for hours in the early morning (like you used to have to do if you wanted to see a show), and I was the last person in line that got them. An acquaintance offered to buy my pair of tickets for $400 each, but I wouldn't miss this for the world. I still have the poster.... It was a show for the ages..
Last tidbit of cool about the show that I feel I should share... Right before the Pumpkins came out, the lights went dark and on the screen behind the stage they showed the infamous car chase scene from the classic movie Bullitt, which is set in San Francisco, and climaxes with Steve McQueen running the bad guys off the road, who explode in a ball of fire. At that moment, the lights came on and the band walked out.... hence the insane screaming that you hear when this video starts.
    God, what a show.... :)

+Rance Hamilton Kurt Cobain was average at best on guitar. I'm sure even he would have admitted that. Half that list was the persons persona and popularity over pure skill and songwriting chops.

    • @GoCotton
      @GoCotton 9 ปีที่แล้ว +91

+pelleman02wb Rating a guitarist is a highly dubious game to get into. I love the Smashing Pumpkins but I would rate Kurt Cobain over Billy in terms of guitar, purely because I prefer his riffs and songs and solos and noise. Obviously Billy is a much better guitarist in terms of skill, but that's a really bizarre way of looking at the guitar IMO. For example, there's a couple of guys in every guitar shop in the world right now that can play circles around Billy from a technical standpoint, but Billy writes infinitely better music than they do, so he's the one we give a shit about. It just so happens that a lot of the best writers tend to be technically very good guitarists, but it's the writing we're really rating.

This video is a gem from beginning to end.
Anyway, I want to tell you something.
I'm in my 40s now, so I was a teen in the 90s.
At the time I was crazy for Nirvana, Pearl Jam and other minor bands. I knew Smashing Pumpinks exist but didn't listen to, don't know why.
Well, I started listening to them relatively recently and, it's difficult to explain but... when I listen to them it's just like I'm listening to the soundtrack of my youthness, even if I never listen to them at the time!
It's just like they were able to capture exactly the vibes of that era, like no other.
Or maybe it's only a joke of my mind.
ps. sorry I'm not english mothertongue

I feel sorry for kids these days, they'll never know that smell and feeling of opening up a new CD that you've been waiting for forever, no leaks, no internet , just the 1 or 2 songs on the radio that you had heard, and then checking the booklet to see if you had the lyrics right.lol, and just the whole experience of everything to do with that new album, the music was almost like a bonus by the time your done looking threw everything. The 90's was truly the last decade where the music was a movement. and you felt it. and you still feel it when listening to SP, or rage, or STP or, PJ or Soundgarden or AIC... just so many of my heros gone..RIP. dont forget to smile.

i feel sorry for those who missed the real 90s bands, the fantastic underground scene ignored by monster arena bands and overblown festivals. People dont even understand the magnitude of Mudhoney, bands with no intention of being an alt rock star, bands you could actually talk to at the bar after. Oblivians, New Bomb Turks, Amphetamine Reptile...labels like Crypt, In the Red, RipOff wouldnt let you down...nurtured bands sidestepping "grunge b.s." and still fresh today. You had to dig for a Superchunk, Rocket From The Crypt Jay Reatards early raw punk, Dwarves...and youre just missing the current movement...mass marketing a band to kids...those days are over. the real stuff is under the radar

It was crazy! I had to put pieces of napkin paper in my ears. It was so loud and powerful, like an Airplane taking off during the fast songs.
And people were smoking 🚬 Cush because there was a cloud of smoke 💨! I could smell it. I think I got a contact high from it. And I remember the girls in the audience all yelled out “I shall be free” when he sang that during Rocket 🚀. I Shall Be Free in Unison! It was incredible! 💥🔥🎸😎

As a long time bootleg collector and fan, this is indeed a gem, Soma as an opener is reason enough to dive into this gig plus the pro shot vid and audio. James and Billy's guitars are also mixed at proper equal volumes....this is a great capture. Although I will say like most great bands from this era, this (at least it appears to me) to be an average show for the band. Their not firing on every single cylinder. When they launch into Geek USA there is a bit of a strange feeling its not at their top level. Having said that there are some stellar moments. Even on a "off night" or the band is not quite as into as other nights they would still blow almost any band off the stage. Great show.

Truly a god like band during this time. No band has been able to convey teenage angst, the heartbreak the fuzzy romantic splendor of young love, the carefree joy of no responsibility; but also the sexual frustration and burst of melodramatic anger that punctuate one's adolescence in such powerful and timelessly nostalgic way. Plus, they looked cool as fuck and had the chops and creativity to back it up. This video is truly a time machine.

I'm actually so old that I remember a time when Smashing Pumpkins weren't even a band. Disarm was the song that caught my attention. There was nothing like it on the radio at the time. From today's perspective, maybe it doesn't sound all that different from other rock songs, but back then it was a pretty bold song to put out. Ever since, I've been a fan. To be honest though, I haven't listened to much of what they made after the big break up (2000?) to CYR, their latest album. I do like CYR though, even though it's a quite different sound. I'm looking forward to hearing what they're currently recording. It's supposed to be back to the heavy guitars. We'll see.

You know one of my college buddies turned me on to Smashing Pumpkins and he said listen to that which was Gish and I was blown away because to me they didn’t sound like anyone else. Billy’s vocals were very unique, his and James guitar 🎸 playing very original and inspirational, Darcy with her own ice Queen vibe, and Jimmy’s very unique approach to playing aggressively and then quietly and then amazing dexterity with ghost notes on the snare and toms with jazz flavoring! So to sum up they didn’t sound like any group at their time not grunge, soft rock, not alternative, not Progressive rock just their own unique sound which was unheard before ala Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix where right of the Shute as a listener you were going what’s this? I don’t know but I like this! Saw the Gish tour and then Siamese Dream tour as part of LOLLAPOLOOZA! Love the guys! I do miss Darcy though! Just sayin 💔

Mostly incoherent and out of tune vocals like 90% of the time and not just judging by this performance alone but from almost all the live material here on TH-cam. This show is a cremmy, mad, loverly, pretty and weird, of the band that i love so much, and the words that almost don't make sense. Love u Billy

What a performance! This was two days before my 14th birthday. Learned the drums blasting Gish/Siamese Dream through my old CD player in my room on my old Pearl Forum kit. Jimmy was my flippin hero on drums- Geek U.S.A and Silverfuck... Holy crap gotta get those back in the regular rotation. Tristessa as well.

The recording is so clear!!! With that said, my friends and I went to this same show in San Antonio, Tx. It was an awesome experience. Funny thing, we were in the mosh pit and my friend head butted me and I had a bloodied bruised eye for the rest of the show. Memories
