- Smashing Pumpkins - Beyond Mellon Collie (Mini-Documentary)
There was a 3 file version of this mini-documentary uploaded with hardcoded Spanish subtitles so I've added this version with no subtitles and not split into 3 files.
Small mini-documentary with the band talking about the issues with the band post Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness into the Adore era
Adore is underrated. I love it
Definitely. I find it quite quite deep and emotional
pumpkins were way better when it was all fuzz and cool octave chords
If Adore was released 10 years later it would have been a hit (it still sold 2 million though). They were always ahead of everyone when it came to music trends after 1995, and never there to collect the winnings after. Only now do people put on Machina etc and realise how good the music was.
@Jax Teller No
Adore is the one I always find myself listening to on repeat
@ 6:25 Billy talking about Jimmy is so heartwrenching. If he didnt make that move, Jimmy probably wouldnt be around today to make music for us and play shows for us.
He never gets any credit for doing the "right" thing. I mean, up at the pearly gates.... Sure ... but you know what I mean? God bless
Just got to see them a couple weeks ago. They’re sounding so good on this tour. Pumped to see Jimmy and James back in the fold.
Adore was my album all thru out my 3 yrs of massive depression. Along with disintegration.
Love them all
I thought disintegration was The Cure
same here i love it, and know what you mean
same
James Iha`s rock bottom: drinking carrot juice and wearing white. Don't spill that shit, bro!
Chamberlins absence was done out of love and best for all involved at the time. All us fans knew he needed to get clean and come back. And Adore’s Eye still give me chills to this day. Incredible album.
They are really exhausted..
Look at IHA and D'arcy eyes ..
Billy's energy continue and never stop.
That's the captain of the ship.
I’ve grown to love the Adore album. Billy was 100% correct although I didn’t appreciate it at the time.
This was a really interesting spot for this doc, adore wasn't a failure yet, the batman soundtrack, eye on lost high way, playing david bowies 50th birthday party, both siamese and meloncolie were extreme successes, and the whole world was excited to aee what billy would do next. It's nice to see this specific moment in time.
14:30 - News flash: ginger spice left the spice girls!
Such a tragedy. The loss. The sorrow.
Love SP but I really enjoy listening to Billy talk , the way explains things is so comforting
Man, I miss D’arcy…
absolute masterpiece
After 1000s of live gigs i can honestly say seeing the Smashing Pumpkins at Radio City Music Hall for the NYC stop of the Adore tour had to be in the top 10(if not top 5 of my best shows of all time)
I had just seen them at Nassau Coliseum for MCIS... it TRULY WAS like seeing a completely different band.
With the Internet being what it is now and all, I can easily see how HARD it was to try and probably harder to pull off. I remember joking "look! It takes three drummers to replace Chamberlain!" When I saw them for adore (I saw three Shows) the first time.
I don't think any gish or Siamese songs were performed at all?
So when he says here, that this was AFTER the Goodbye to the "grunge band" they were being sold as on TV... BECAUSE the few Mellon Collie songs they did play (off the top of my head I remember 1979, bullet, thru the eyes of Ruby, tonight tonight and STUMBLEINE... they were all played completely different from any other live version AND ALSO different from how they had been presented live on tours past .. so... just wow. They never cease to amaze me.
This is totally bringing me back to my high school days! I remember watching this on MTV and totally gasping at the "news flash" about the Spice Girls! I was a mega Pumpkins fan and when Adore came out I absolutely hated it. Looking back, I realize that I was 17 years old and not mature enough to understand the themes and tone. Now that I'm an adult, Adore to me is by far their most beautiful album. The songs are breathtaking.
I was like 18 myself.
Think they like....
Possibly
Even may have HELPED me grow up.
I seriously remember getting into Bob Dylan shortly after... I couldn't have been more than 18 myself... good times. Saw that tour at Radio City Music Hall. I had just seen them at Nassau Coliseum for Mcis... it TRULY WAS like seeing a completely different band. With the Internet being what it is now and all, I can easily see how HARD it was to try and probably harder to pull off.
Some Smashing Pumpkins and Spice Girls songs have the same chord progressions and vibes.
"This goes back to Homer, and I don't mean Simpson"
I love SP...They are a legend rock 90s
I caught that. Billy said capturing two hours of your life. Music is my constant companion. Nothing is ever lost. It motivates me and pushes me forward
Adore was one of the first challenging albums I had from a favorite band as a young fan. It was so dark and moody in a way that they hadn't been before. By the time I got to the end of the album... For Martha put it all into place. It has always been my favorite Pumpkins album ever since. Thanks for uploading this!
I love Smashing Pumpkins.
We missed you at the Internet Archive event. The Aruba Minister of Culture and Finance was there!
I don't think I've heard Adore in about 15 years. Was a huge Pumpkins fan in the early to mid 90s, but then it just fizzled out. Now I'll probably have to dig out the cd and take a listen. Same goes for Mellon Collie. Haven't heard it in ages.
I remember waiting so long to see the Pumpkins tour behind "Mellon Collie" Released in 95 a show was finally booked in my city in August 1996 w/ Grant Lee Buffalo as the opening act. Then that show (& others) were cancelled b/c their keyboardist O.D. death & the drummer charged w/ drug possession. Finally the show happened it was rescheduled in January 1997 w/ Fountains Of Wayne opening & one of the guys from The Frogs on keyboards.
...the Pumpkins and Grant Lee Buffalo on the same Stage, so sad that this Show was cancelled.
Grant Lee Buffalo weren`t well known in Germany, so i saw them in a small club in Munich where they played one of the most emotional gigs i`ve ever seen in front of 150 people...
I wonder which 4 or 5 songs D’Arcy was referring to
Oh man. The feelings and zeitgeist from this time are coming back, tied in with the music.
goddamn I luuuuv D'arcy, she's my 90's gurl.
Amazing nostalgia!
This goes back to Homer; And I don’t mean Simpson.
The quote !
I laughed out loud when he said that! 😁
Seen them for the Mellon collie tour in Lafayette Louisiana. They canceled the tour date after chamberlain then came back and rocked out. I think Garbage and Verca Salt opened up for them.
I love your machina 2 default. Didja also yelp and cheer and whoop and Whoooo!! When it (their image) popped up on the giant screens during the opening (mcis - the song) of the reunion tour shows too?!
18:41 hahaha James is effing hilarious
The nostalgia 🎃 🤘🏼
Last comment i swear, anyone else like DYING At James Iha about 19 minutes in... talking about (what would become HIS FUTURE HOME!!) WITH a shit-eating grin!?
Talking about chai teas, organic carrot juice and even wearing some white clothing (after he wore white head to tour every night on the 2023 world is a vampire tour) calling himself "pretty far gone"
....its just TOO funny
I ❤ you James!!!
Man. I miss the 90 sh so
Much. Mtv days…
samesies
Ginger Spice quit!? Fuckkk.
18:56 James is hilarious.
ikr, i was laughing out loud with that sentence haha
@@pollitorsiones "I was pretty far gone" LMAOOOOOOOOO
Son muy bonitos, losamo
@18:41-19:06, I laughed so hard that it hurt.
" i was pretty far gone" lmao fuck man, each band member has such a awesome personality in their own way. i wish so bad d'arcy was still in the band and around. she was so smart and cool
The funniest thing James Iha ever said came from a segment in Vieuphoria when he was talking to a therapist. She asked him "What about your bandmates bothers you?" James replied "Well, Im not sure if it's one individual or the band collectively, but it's their footwear that bothers me. Im not sure if it's any one shoe, but maybe just the thought of it - the thought of what's on their feet at any given moment distracts me."
@@f3uibeghardt522 James Iha. Ultimate minimalist guitarist and master of surrealist humor. I always wondered if he would appear as a guest on Tim and Eric: Awesome Show Great Job. Far out he makes me laugh. A true space cadet.
Flash! Geri quit the Spice Girls!
gasp! I can’t believe it!
The pumpkins did the right thing with jimmy at the time. I am not gonna name names but there are some bands these days who didnt care that their drummer was an addict and insisted on taking him on grueling world tours without thinking about his health until it was too late. I think you know who i mean
I don’t know who you mean. Who?!
Foo Fighters??
Hanson?
Very Informative about there Musical Beginnings & How it all came together, Also how they were inspired to make music based off a Previous Artist John Lennon. When was this VHS Tape released?
*GINGER SPICE QUIT THE SPICE GIRLS!?!?!?!*
recently picked up MCATIS cd/vinyl is next!
Fantastic!
Hell ya
🙏🏼
Gish was their best album by far
all that talk of Billy being ego driven was just a false narrative, it was a manipulative smear campaign. just look at his personality when hes speaking, this guy isnt egotistical.
Billy sounds different at 5:51
Does anyone know what date the "I Am One" performance that is featured around 3:10 is from? It looks like they're playing some show at The Metro in Chicago, but I don't recognize the pro-shot footage.

😉
The footage is from Vieuphoria
🔥🔥🔥
This seems like 20 minutes of introduction, waiting for the documentary to begin in earnest.
Well I mean it is a “Mini-Documentary” so maybe read the title before you comment.
@@bioof4 There are 3 minute documentaries that get past the intro phase.
Feels more like a TV special than a documentary.
Everyone says Melancholy is there defining album I love Carly it's amazing but a door a door holds a special place in my heart that album with Jeff Buckley and with Elliot Smith and with Robert Smith I appreciate what this man has done for me beautiful everyone sucks if they do not like a door
At least Billy, James and Darcy loved Jimmy Chamberlin and wanted him to focus on his addiction issues.
This is a delicate situation and often it’s not handled very well at all.
The Pumpkins deserves credit for their compassion and love for there band mate.
The Bass player Darcy essentially became a malcontent within the band .
Billy, James and Jimmy were constantly working on their craft as musicians.
They knew if they wanted to grow as artist this was necessary especially with the new albums on the horizon and the touring in the support of this effort.
When Darcy showed up at the studio she brought no ideas she had worked out, in fact she would go two weeks up to a month without ever picking her instrument up to practice.
So Darcy got the Axe from Billy and he had the full support and backing of James and Jimmy.
Darcy squandered the opportunity and that’s on her.
I heard Darcy let her appearance go.
Her butt is wide and she is Frumpy to say the least.
Not only did she neglect her bass playing she also neglected her health, both mentally and physically.
That’s life and I wish her the best.
I understand her Net worth is 7 to 10 million, so she can afford her horse feed bills.
I just hope she found happiness and contentment.
Billy should not have produced Adore. He got lost.
14:33 This comment didn't age well.
i mean shes not wrong, those old pumpkin records are timeless.
@@Glixity The old ones. Adore is the most dated album I've heard.
@@myautobiographyafanfic1413 Adore is one of the old albums
@@garciansmith1460 yes. And it sounds it.
Adore totally sounds late 90s, but I'm okay with that
Adore is in my top 2 SP records...Oceania is my Fav....Adore is brilliant.
Oceania is your favorite Pumpkins record? what’s your list, Oceania, Adore, Melon Collie, Gish, Siamese ?
