I was actually at this concert. I have the privilege of being able to have seen them four times. Three times at the Metro and once at lollapalooza. Some of the best memories I have were sitting at these concerts watching this band
I had a bootleg copy of this version rocket on tape before Siamese dream came out... also starla was on that bootleg. Times were so different then. I felt like a baller for having that tape. Then when I heard final version of rocket it was like WOW.
This is the band I remember and love. And it saddens me to see what D'Arcy has become because she is the reason why I chose to be a bass player. This band was a huge inspiration for me as a teen.
Oh man I didn't even know how bad she was fucking up until now. I looked her up and thought she had started a family was the reason she quit music.
Yeah it's pretty bad. She isn't even recognizable anymore. Crack is wack!
then keep playing a join a band
Trolleo McTroll I would probably see them but wouldn't be as excited. Smashing Pumpkins are like Guns N' Roses now. They have only the singer and all new members. Slash was more important to Guns N Roses than any of the other Smashing Pumpkin members.
I know how you feel I'm just sad that jimmy left the band because he was the reason why I drum today
I lost a shoe at this show--- it was worth it--- wish they still rocked like this---- but glad to have been there :)
nicole koretsky is that your shoe @ 34:31?
I wanted to go to this show but only had enough money to get it and buy one beer. Opted to go to a NYE party out in Deerfield where I watched a bunch of coked out rich kids be stupid. Worst decision ever. IIRC the Pumpkins were opening for Thrill Kill Kult?
I was at this show as well. Was staying at a friend's apartment off Clark and Barry for the Holidays. I had seen them at NIU a few months prior and 5 or 6 times before this at Metro/Avalon etc. Definitely miss the Gish days.
I haven't seen them since 07 but that show rocked and from what I've seen they're not too shabby. They played Crush a 7 months ago. They've been digging deep.
Thank you .
For the train to go see this for under Two dolas. Bitd.

Jane's Addiction was gone, but Smashing Pumpkins' masterpiece "Gish" left acid rock fans no reason being sad at all. Excellent group!
Gish is the perfect preparation to real MASTERPIECE which is still Siamese Dream. Everything of the music approach in Gish is in SD. I love D'Arcy, Billy, James, Jimmy and this era for EVER. Michel, France
Even in terrible VHS compression D'Arcy looks stunning.
So glad I got to see them at the Double Door around ‘92 or ‘93 for $4 when they gave a charity concert that night and were also trying out the tunes for Mellon Collie (they still had the sheet music for some of the songs on metal stands). Got a front row spot right in front of Billy that night (and almost got crushed to death when everyone started moshing during the last few songs)! Definitely my favorite Pumpkins concert memory! Forever grateful to my friend and client who stood in line for me to get us those tickets!
There was a reason why this was my favorite band... and still is.
It's so good to see the old James on stage, no looking like he's pissed and would walk away any second. He might have had his reasons to lose interest on enjoying the show and rock out, but i wonder if he revists these old films and how he feels about everything...
James and Darcy were just window dressing. Token pretty female bassist and exotic asian guitarist. Both absolutely mediocre musicians. SP is essentially Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy and Jimmy on drums.
I wish Billy gave him a bit more respect.. How good could James song Lover, lover been with Billys touch (its still very good without).
@@christiangasior4244 Congratulations you've just lost the right to listen to Mayonaise...
Jimmy is such an amazing drummer. World Class

Thirty years ago, wow. Seems like only yesterday I heard "Suffer" when I was on acid and fell in love with Smashing Pumpkins. It was 1991 and I was 19 years old.
I'm glad this is getting some real views. It's got the best live rocket, bury me, window paine, Suffer, Tristessa, and Snail I've ever heard. Also one of the best Siva's I am One's that can be found. And probably would have been the best singular silverfuck if Billy's equipment didn't give out in the middle of the song. One of my all time favorite shows by any band ever. This show is especially amazing because finding outstanding live versions of window paine, suffer, and snail can prove to be very difficult. And on a whole other level of scarcity is being able to watch Billy just go full bore on a guitar -- making new sounds, going heavy into a solo, hitting huge chords, even playing a pretty unique solo during suffer - it's very unusual to see billy do that sort of stuff in a live show.
+BlackHoleAtron You sound like a true hardcore fan. What do you think of the new version of the band that Billy put together? I wouldn't think you would like it very much.
Sorry just saw this reply 4 months later lol. I like the new band. Doesn't bother me at all they it smashing pumpkins. They invented it; I didn't - it's theirs to do what they want with it. I think it's tough for any band including the pumpkins to reach the highest highs these days as the market just doesn't seem to be there for recording super high end music. It seems to be all about connecting via a live show to put on youtube these days - which is great - but the high end, culture-revolutionizing music is pretty much gone.
@@1969ryson Billy is (was?) an incredible talent but I think he has gone so far up his own ass that he has emerged in an entirely different universe parallel but not quite in full step with ours. Siamese Dream alone would justify quite an ego, but the dude is talking about seeing people shapeshift with Alex Jones and the albums, no matter the configuration as long as Jimmy is around, have remained mediocre since the original breakup circa 2000. Even Jimmy has been castrated with a horrible snare sound on the most recent album. Sounds like he switched kits with Chad Smith, which makes sense since it's Rick Rubin, but their styles couldn't be much more different. Absolutely no power. Is he allergic to Bitch Vig now? I don't know if his ego keeps him away because they got in some petty fight or something, but Butch Vig knew how to hide his dubious vocals behind a nice bassy guitar fuzz (finest guitar fuzz on record imo, beats Catherine Wheel's Chrome and MBV's Loveless). Also knew that the band was about lots of guitars and LOUD, powerful drumming. Mellon Collie worked as about 40 percent is amazing, 40 percent good, and 20 percent embarassing or painful. I find in my old age I don't like much from Adore as I'd rather just go listen to Depeche Mode or something, although I still like Ava Adore. Machina is a bloated weird album, but Stand Inside Your Love, I Of the Mourning, Everlasting Gaze aside from the acapella part, and a few others are great. Everyone complained that it was overproduced as if SP wasn't always overproduced, but that was certainly true with a few of those tunes. Billy needed Jimmy to be like "Dude, we don't need Silverfuck just to get a cool Explicit Lyrics warning" and "what is this Tale of a Scorched Earth shit? You serious? You're padding this shit out. Let's edit this into one album and make it one of the best albums of all time like the last one" and also "Go ahead and fire me, see how that goes". Maybe "Thanks for taking me back, now get this Heavy Metal Machine shit out of here. Why do these need to be so long?". Anyway I'm tweaking a bit. Billy makes me embarrassed to be a fan, let me leave it at that. If it all ended and he went quiet in 2000, that would be like riding off into the beautiful sunset. But it's been messy and pathetic and entirely forgettable.
I saw them for 3 bucks in 91. Small crowd 9:30 club in DC. I agree Mellon collie should have been one album. I’m not so critical of him. Being a rock musician is not easy. I think it’s interesting Billy has never really played it safe. Some of his stuff post Siamese is not the best but there are a lot of jems here and there. I need to listen to Oceana more. Zeitgeist is ok. Some good stuff on it. Haven’t listened to Monuments really but what I’ve heard of it is good. Being embarrassed of him? Not so much. I think he’s the best from his genre and time period. Taste is subjective though I know.
@@Albatross_1823 crazy to think how many amazing bands came (and still come) through 9:30 Club
I was at this show. It was my birthday. I turned 22. I wish I remembered it more clearly.
Saw them two months before this in Pittsburgh. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen to this day.
Jimmy is just casually killin it on the skins.
+S Goglin Casually it right. It's funny how calm he seems at times. It's kind of incredible in a way.
And to be fair and honest. There was no place to sit. I spent most of the night in the mosh pit
54:04, the music is so good it even made the low camera resolution synergize with it.

that I Am One breakdown/scream is one of the best Billy has ever belted!!!
This show easily makes my top 10 of all time as a long long time bootleg collector I have listened to probably almost every show outside of a dozen or so
I'd be curious to know what your top 10 are. Or at least your top 3 or 4. This is one of my favs, and then 1992-09-04 has got to be another one of favorites even the audio isn't nearly as clear as on this video. I've listened to a lot of pumpkins shows, but I doubt as many as you. I'd also be curious to see what you think of their VIP performances they've done kind of recently.
I have compiled several lists, Ill take a look at a few and put one up here
one of the greatest rock bands
Jimmy is a great drummer and billy plays lead guitar great
49:39 Best Billy scream of all time
i'm in awe at this amazing, fantastic, incredible, stupendous concert! this is how it was for The Smashing Pumpkins at The METRO in the city of Chicago. thank you so much for uploading this wonderful video, cheers!
Awesome concert!!! I've always felt that 'Suffer' has a bit of a The Doors vibe to it.
There are moments during the solo where the sparseness of the song resembles the trip through the desert feel of parts of the doors' song the end.
this is the type of pumpkins concert i would have loved to see! music is younger and filled w wonderlous angst
If I could see the original band play during any particular era, this would be it. But, also seeing the Arising! tour would be a helluva time too.
The guitar playing during the banter before Snail reminds me of Champagne Supernova, even though that song hadn't existed yet
brilliant performance
the best period for this band
Billy is like a kid who won a contest and got to play with a band
Wow! Thanks for doing this...this brings back memories of seeing this show back at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit in '91!
Lucky as fuck
They played a show at that place in '92 and Billy's famous guitar got stolen but he got it back in 2019
They're between song amp feedback is freaking sick haha
It kills me inside to see what this band has become. This is an hour of pure magic that I'd give anything to get to experience today. But the band in this video died a long time ago.
Sad :(
"Tristessa" .... one of my faves. Such a rare gem to see live.
This is great, always loved Gish.
This is by far my favorite band of all time
Not only great energetic show, but Gish strat was still with Billy!
He got it back. There's a YT vid of it somewhere.
fuck thanks for uploading this
How the F are there only 74 views of this show? Thanks for the upload. So awesome to see this footage from almost 20 years ago. Damn, I am old.
if I had a time machine. this is so great.
I saw them on 12/16 in San Diego, and it was a concert highlight of my life. I had only seen one video but knew I liked the sound but hadn't heard anything else when a buddy said hey we're going and got an extra ticket. Blew me away is an understatement! Now I get to relive it as much as I can with this!
I was only a kid so didnt notice how hot Billy was then
Billy + LSD = perfection
Saw them play at Bristol Bierkeller during Gish tour. Best live band I´ve seen.
thanks for the upload. SP army for life!
I was born in '91. I wish I would've been born 10 years earlier to see this live. Those looked like the years.
awesome to find the full thing here, this is my favourite SP bootleg, beautiful sounding, magic performance and great footage... always loved those 20 sec of bye june and its "forced" stop too :) ... great job man, you're giving justice to this beauty by uploading it
I love this fuckn performance dont ever take this off youtube please!
Window Paine is... just... beautiful.
Yeah, now I know what happened to his red 70’s 6 or 9 Strat. Apparently he painted it silver for this show (I wonder if that was in reference to the song?), then he smashed it. Glad he’s still rocking the ‘74 Blue/I Love My Mom Strat.
Wow I miss you guys and your hair. Jimmy, thanks for letting me fondle your Grammys luv ya.
The best band ever!
Best band when you're a teenager. Totally captures the angst and weird wonder and over-dramatic, awkward beauty of youth.
@@christiangasior4244 well they have some adult-y songs, especially from the album Adore
@@alexmalch yeah I still like or love everything up until their first breakup after Machina. Siamese Dream is still one of my favorite albums, and I also love Gish and Mellon Collie (about 60 percent of it at least)
@@alexmalch Behold! the Night Mare and Ava Adore are my favorite songs on Adore. On Machina it would be Stand Inside Your Love and I of the Mourning.
Back when they were HUNGRY
that rocket version is interesting, still glad and love the final version they went with on Siamese dream
Interesting to see such an early interation of Rocket
The world has turned. Never forget rock and roll
30 years to the day, happy new year everyone
BEST PUMPKINS LINEUP/ERA EVER 🏆🏆🏆🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
His voice is nails on a chalkboard In retrospect
I was at this show. I think the Posterkids opened. I was already wasted. I had a suit on (because it was new years) and at the end all I had on was slacks, scuffed shoes and a white t shirt.
Catherine and Chainsaw kittens were on the bill, but not Poster Children. They were another great Chicago band of that era.
People say "i wish they still rocked like this" not being able to rock like this.
I think Billy can still rock like this but he chooses not to. He's always moving in different directions musically.
@SuperSlimothy
Most of the reason why I love listening to this is because of the music. But, like you said, part of it is the good memories of being a youngster. I was in college, in chicago, from 92-96 so we hit a lot of SP shows and partied a lot with this music in the background. Good times for sure.
God bless you.
best band ever EVER!
wow...that blew my fucking doors off....the end was legend stuff.....
I saw them in this era, prob 92, and it was so new and fresh, Billy a gitar geek. Drums were also very good, maybe the real foundation of it all. the first 2 albums, the 3th was a bummer. oops.
That one kid gets taken away during I Am One. Hahaha!
man!!!!!! i had just got out of high school on the 18th of dec....wow!! time flys
nice short version of bye june after window paine
The moshing at 0:32:18. I wish I was there
billy was so hot
James looks so high in this concert lol
They played this on My Third Birthday. Fuck yeah
Billy corgan iced out lol
bro is fr rockin two chains here lmao
Watched the whole thing straight through. Thank you, thank you, thank you. How do I download and save forever?
app youtube-dl
That's for damn sure.
He used to make it up on the spot xD
THAT SNARE MAN
haha Right? Owns
@@garrethboland IT SOUNDS PERFECT MAN POOOGGGG
How did we go from this to Justin Bieber, it's scary
There was plenty of shitty pop music in the early 90s. This has nothing to do with that. Completely different genres
This is the most early 2010s comment I’ve ever seen
Raw power the way it should be if you dare to call it "Rock"....So mote it Be!!
What kind of equipment was used to record the show?
I would give anything to be in that crowd
Is this the DVD coming with the deluxe reissue of Gish?
Rocket with different lyrics!
i'm not exactly just going by what i hear. i've done both shrooms and LSD and from personal experience alone you can tell the LSD is easier on the body. people get gut rot from shrooms and sometimes even have a 'shroom hangover' the next day. but after doing acid you feel 100%. you may feel tired if you did it all night though, but that's cos you're pulling an all nighter. i don't just believe what i hear. it took a lot of reading and my own reasoning to decide that it's reasonably safe.
Shrooms are a different trip though. LSD is more of a visual thing. Shrooms is a more body and thought thing. more spritual imo. DMT is where it's at. not the frog shit. normal DMT.
there's supposed to be a comma between kary mullis and timothy leary btw...
yeah
I couldn't agree more. Personally I think he'd be great regardless though. I think pretty much every good musician becomes better with psychedelics. It's not a myth. It really does expand creativity. But I think it only works when you already have talent. LSD won't give you talent, it will just enhance the creative talent you have. I've only had shrooms 3 times and LSD twice and I know it's helped my creativity a bit. Not vastly, but it helps.
Jimmy Chamberlin was, in my opinion, what made the pumpkins such a great group. I appreciate Corgans guitar prowess, his lyrical work along with Iha's & Wretzky's. I really don't care for anything they did after Gish. It all started with Gish & it ended there as well.
AGREE 💯
Jimmy was half of what made them so great. But yeah, agreed. He has the best idiosyncratic, immediately recognizable sound I've ever heard. He isn't playing in all kinds of weird time signatures, but it doesn't matter. It's amazing. Geek USA, Tristessa, and Fuck You (an ode to no one) are his most technically demanding performances imo.
You don't like Siamese Dream? Cherub Rock? Rocket? Hummer? Siamese Dream is my favorite album of all time along w/ Ok Computer by Radiohead.
@@christiangasior4244 what about Thru The Eyes of Ruby?
I agree. Billy may be the captain but Jimmy is their secret weapon. I was at this show (and many of their early gigs...grew up right down the street from Metro near Clark and Belmont ave. got to see them at some smaller places before they hit..great memories) Gish has always been their masterpiece to me. I stuck with them until Mellon Collie and then kind of lost track until about 7 years ago I went back and got into all the albums after. I did see them with Matt Walker and Kenny Aronoff on drums live and it was not the same. Now that Jimmy is back behind the kit I went to see them again and it definitely has some of the magic again but of course they are older and I have never thought their post GISH material was as brilliant...still good material but GISH is a perfect album in my opinion from top to bottom
@calstevelee Yeah we're old but I feel like a teenager again listening to this :) Jimmy with a mullet... hahahahaha definitely the good old days
he has to be tripping here
obviously to gain control again they had to make it illegal and they had to come up with a bunch of false claims to prevent new users. 90% of psychedelic users are well educated people. if i could remember where i read that, i'd leave a link, but you'll just have to take my word for now
Tweaked? Wait, has the sound been tweaked, or the people? OR BOTH?
Yep
this is what happens when you take drugs and play in a band
i'd say that's too darn scary dog-gone-it!
