Looking at my Arrow titles on the shelf, almost every single one of them that's not one of the huge box sets is a different size. Silence of the Lambs is smaller than Carlito's Way, but bigger than Heathers. I'm glad I waited and never bought the Kino version and went straight for the Arrow when it was released. Awesome movie and great review. It actually won the big five Academy Awards. Best picture, Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster), Directing (Jonathan Demme), and Writing - Screenplay based on material from another medium (Ted Tally).
I did a comparison of the rips of both 4K (I own both now...) and the Kino one is more red and less green, but I wonder what the director expected. The bitrate looked better on the Kino one, and it was higher on the Kino one too. But it's nearly identical, so no big deal. What I wanna know is why people saying the Arrow one has better audio because I'm sure it's the same track, but a lower bitrate on the Aarow one.
Such a great film. Saw it for the first time on VHS in the late 80s. My mom was watching with me and when Lechter tore off the dead mans face in the ambulance and you realize hes free… my god. What an amazing twist. Maybe the best ever.
Late 80's, early 90's, doesn't really matter, I was just making a joke. I also remember renting the vhs and watching it for the first time with my brother and sister when we were kids, we were lucky, our local video shop didn't care about renting to kids, he wouldn't turn down money so we got to rent what we wanted.. I was about 11 when I saw this.. it's one of my favourite films and like Ken, I have collected all 3 editions, and I would buy more if anyone else releases it in the future.:-)
Max, you should have heard the audience reaction for that scene at the cinema in 1991; loudest freak-out screams from women i've ever heard at the movies....
Supposedly the 2.0 surround track is either a downmix of the 5.1 on the Arrow release or is in some other way changed from the 2.0 surround on the Criterion disc. The Criterion apparently has much stronger bass (check the scene when Clarice is first handed the photo by Dr. Chilton before meeting Hannibal (the scene with the red lighting). The bass is supposed to be much stronger on the Criterion 2.0 Surround track.
As soon as I scan the movie into my CLZ app I chuck the j card into the garbage. But a slipcover, I would love it if they were slipcovers instead. I would definitely keep those on.
You’re right Gus. Doesn’t specifically say it on the back so I didn’t notice while glancing, but it is on there. Now I have no reason to keep the Kino. 😢

It really does blow kino out a million times over, bloody amazing, fantastic, and one biblical transfer
I'm one of the few people I know who prefers Brian Cox's portrayal of Hannibal from Manhunter. Anthony Hopkins performance felt too over the top and cartoony to me as opposed to the subtle and nuanced performance from Cox.
I also like both a lot but every time I reread the books I see the Michael Mann cast over the Johnathon Demme version. I agree Brian Cox was better. I wish I had the option of see the sequel stories with Brian Cox.
There are comparisons of the new Silence of the Lambs 4K vs the kino lorber disc here on TH-cam. The difference is staggering. Not just the whites. The color grading looks greenish. Side by side, Clarice looks like a zombie in the Kino Lorber release.
What I find ironic about many horror fans obsession with placing Silence of the Lambs in the horror section is that when it comes to the Academy Awards - you know, Oscars - they will often forget to mention that it won best picture, and many other awards. When a horror discussion revolves around SotL, it's always the difference between horror and thriller. But never once have I ever heard a horror fan mention the genre, the best pictures and this movie all in the same topic. It's as though they want to pretend that the academy doesn't acknowledge horror. I know that they have never really spoken about it in any other context, just with a movie that is divisive to the horror community. In fact, when talking about the 90s, some pretty big TH-cam horror communities will address that the biggest horror movies in the 90s was Scream and Blair Witch Project. I commented on such a video, but to no surprise they didn't reply. I was one of those who had mentioned the color space issue with the Kino UHD way back when I read about it. I found that those posts would disappear. I even asked you once if they were being deleted and you claimed to not know what I was talking about. The trouble with TH-camrs is their blind priase of certain labels, and their absolute hatred of others. Once a TH-camr throws disrespect towards one label, they tend to pile on praise for others without even actually giving the release an objective look. Especially when that release is sent to them free of charge. I won't name any names, but there are a few within this community. But keep doing what you want to do. I'm not trying to take anything away. I'm just trying to add a bit more thought.
Didn’t delete nothing dude. I will say, when I do a review, that is the way I see it. Not saying it’s fact, but it’s my opinion. You commenting that you read something isn’t offering anything for me to take seriously. Maybe if you would have actually watched it and had an opinion.
So ive heard the criterion Blu Ray is better than the kino version is that true and if so is the criterion Blu Ray or the new Arrow release better picture wise
I continue to be confused at Kino's wonky QC issues, namely in the color palates. NOBODY'S FOOL's whites were practically blue. You have some like THE LONGEST YARD which seem to be perfect, and then others like DEEP RISING, which was improperly matted--roughly 20% of image was lost in the top & bottom of the frame. I'm keeping my Kino 4K and the Arrow edition will arrive later this week. I think I'll be done with new editions until 8K becomes a thing. But I do love me an Arrow hardbox.
You may want to get your eyes checked. There's definitely a lot more wrong with the Kino color than just the whites. Unnatural greens happening all over. Particularly faces and skin appear pale with green hues. Anyone who cares about this film should grab the Arrow release. As a big plus the Arrow disc has a FIM encode and grain resolves much better. That kino disc was a huge disappointment and I immediately began hoping for an Arrow UK edition. Very happy to now have the definitive release from Arrow!
It’s never going to be a US release. You’ll have to buy Kino’s, which has screwed up color for the first 20 minutes. Which they denied, then Arrow fixed it.
I wonder which one Trump prefers? 🤔 Also, this is called "a psychological thriller" because that's exactly what it was called at release. Thrillers in general don't really exist anymore for the most part, and have lately just been slapped with either the "drama" or "horror" label.
So I should stop buying 4K discs until Arrow releases the movies that I want? I’m starting to get a little annoyed with buying the same movie repeatedly on 4K. I want the best addition but can’t we have it the first time? Black Hawk Down, The Fifth Element, Stand By Me, Superman The Movie are just a few of the examples that I can think of were the original 4K was replaced by a superior edition in fairly short order.
I get it. It sucks, but you have to keep in mind that most of the rereleases are for different regions and countries. If they can get their hands on the 4K rights, they’re going to do it regardless of who released it before. It’s not the same company doing all these different editions.
@@midlevelmedia The other regions is a valid point, so my import 4K of The Fifth Element I’ll give you, but Black Hawk Down, Stand By Me & Superman don’t fall into that category. I’m just expressing my frustration. If a new edition adds something the way The Donner edition of Superman II did or even a ton of extras, I get it. This is the 4K format, the absolute best picture & audio should be baked into the cake.
I couldn't stand the Kino Lorber 4K version. There was sh~t loads of grain in the film. Does the Arrow Video 4K version have the same amount of grain ?
I also have all 3, got the Arrow video release last week, I have a calibrated Sony a95L I cant tell the difference between any of them. I disagree with you there a new thriller horror movie out in the theatre with a killer thats scarier than Hannibal or Buffalo Bill, the Electric Lady. If you know, you know.
Hey Ken, you always talk about how the Scream Factory titles get leaked on line and that they need to get there shit together. I always laugh when you say that because it’s true. Anyway Dawn of the Discs just leaked Arrows new titles. So it’s a hard to criticize Scream Factory when Arrow is the same way
By todays standards they sometimes seem like a joke. But they have their moments. It's funny however when Criterion fans think a Criterion release is automatically the best possible version while their 4Ks sometimes don't even have HDR.
I know a specific presidential candidate thinks Silence of the Lambs is a great movie. Infact this candidate has much admiration for a specific character; “The Late Great Hannibal Lecturer!” 🤭 😆
Wait a minute, you claim to have seen "The Silence Of The Lambs" about 20 times in addition to having watched the movie ever since you were a kid, yet you're not sure if Jodie Foster was nominated or if she won the Academy Award for best actress. Come on Ken ..... seriously? 😄
What has watching a film got to do with how many awards it received ? How many Emmy’s/golden globes have the tv shows i watch received? Haven’t got a clue & why would I care unless i was the actors mother ?
I will say, Ken, as a guy whose channel is dedicated to physical media, you've really gotta keep your ear a little closer to the ground. The color space issue with the KL release was pretty well-documented within the community. For you to say you were only just hearing about it with the announcement of the Arrow release tells me that you don't go out of your way to read much on the happenings in the physical media world.
Idk how this movie has always been so regarded. I thought it was boring. No gore. No deaths. For a movie about a cannibal, you'd expect it to be crazy. If there was no cussing, this movie would be PG🎉
One of the greatest pieces of crap of all time IMO. This is one movie I almost walked out of theater when watching it. It bored the crap out of me. It wasn't thrilling, wasn't scary. I never understood all the hype over it. But I am in minority here. Good review though. I was interested in hearing your thoughts comparing them.
I think as physical media eventually gets replaced by streaming Arrow and a few of the other boutique labels will be like L.P vinyl records are today and collectors will buy all our future discs from Arrow its the L.P vinyl of 4K.
Jodie Foster did indeed win her 2nd academy award for this film.

Silence of the lambs is the only horror movie that won the 5 most important Oscars. Yes Jodie won best Actress in a leading role.
How about the criterion version?
I also have all 3, got the Arrow video release last week, I have a calibrated Sony a95L I cant tell the difference between any of them. I disagree with you there a new thriller horror movie out in the theatre with a killer thats scarier than Hannibal or Buffalo Bill, the Electric Lady. If you know, you know.
Must be pleasant to know that picture quality doesn't seem to matter to you. ^^ Saves a lot of money!
Hey Ken, you always talk about how the Scream Factory titles get leaked on line and that they need to get there shit together. I always laugh when you say that because it’s true. Anyway Dawn of the Discs just leaked Arrows new titles. So it’s a hard to criticize Scream Factory when Arrow is the same way
Well it’s not so much they get leaked as Amazon puts them up for pre-order with images. Lol
It seems like Criterion's glorious days are gone. Kino's and other boutiques transfers are often poínted as superior.

Yawn - some people have lives & aren’t 24/7 audio-visual nerds. Sounds like you need to spend more time outside ‘the community’ & get a life 🤡
😢
Idk how this movie has always been so regarded. I thought it was boring. No gore. No deaths. For a movie about a cannibal, you'd expect it to be crazy. If there was no cussing, this movie would be PG🎉
One of the greatest pieces of crap of all time IMO. This is one movie I almost walked out of theater when watching it. It bored the crap out of me. It wasn't thrilling, wasn't scary. I never understood all the hype over it. But I am in minority here. Good review though. I was interested in hearing your thoughts comparing them.
Looking at your comments you seem to be bored by a lot of stuff, maybe you’re just a really boring person.
This film was such a bore to watch for me
Same
"horror" insults this movie.
@@gbgary Why? There’s a lot of great movies in every genre. Does every great movie need to be a drama?
@@midlevelmedia "horror" equates to a B-movie in my mind. calling it a "thriller" takes it up a grade...where it belongs. 👍🏼
@@gbgary What a perfectly snobby way to think.
Go home Gary
I think as physical media eventually gets replaced by streaming Arrow and a few of the other boutique labels will be like L.P vinyl records are today and collectors will buy all our future discs from Arrow its the L.P vinyl of 4K.
