El Mariachi was shot on 16mm and Once Upon a Time in Mexico was shot on early HD cameras where it would never look any better than 1080p. Neither film could probably get a 4k remaster like Desperado.
Plenty of films shot in 1080p digital have gotten 4k upgrades. Attack of the clones, Revenge of the sith, Collateral are a couple of examples. 16mm can also benifit from a 4k restoration as well.
Between this and Silence of the Lambs Arrow is killing it next week. I'm kind of disappointed El Mariachi didn't get a 4k as there is still some room for improvement with 16mm. Once Upon a Time I'm not as worried about. Those early 1080 cameras were pretty primitive so I'm not sure how much even HDR would help.
This is my release of the year so far, I absolutely love these films and Robert Rodriguez. Been a fan since I was a kid watching the Spy Kids films then went back to watch From Dusk Till Dawn and the Mariachi Trilogy and just fell in love with the guy. Desperado is one of the best 4Ks I've ever seen, honestly I'd agree that the set is worth it for that film alone, plus all the INCREDIBLE in-depth interviews with Robert, you really can't lose with this box set. Arrow is freaking killing it, and we need From Dusk Till Dawn on 4K YESTERDAY, another one of my all time favorite movies.
I wish El Mariachi would get a new scan at the original 4:3 aspect ratio. It's so awkwardly cropped on all these digital releases. I'm tempted to track down the old VHS just so I can watch it properly again.
Please please PLEASE let this be what leads to From Dusk Till Dawn hitting 4K! I think it will and it’s my favorite Robert Rodriguez movie of all time. Thank you for the review Ken and keep it coming please!
B&N is having a 50% off Arrow Video sale. I just ordered the Desperado 4K steelbook for $30 and Riddick 3-disc 4K for $25. This set was half-off for $50, but I hate the other two films.
Top man Ken great review. I’m in the UK but i appreciate how you came clean. You’re not out to make a kill and you appreciate your fans. “Love your channel buddy”
It was amazing film making with such a low budget that Robert Rodriguez made "El Mariachi" watching it in a movie theater at the time was wonderful and he did everything on the movie. Very inventive with the low budget he had. I'm a fan.
@@thelastmoviestanding He didn’t have time or money to set up shots, and was practically doing wide shots and close ups at the same time. Stand from a distance, take wide shot, then step in for close up. It’s a wrap! Crazy, but it works!
Well … I’m certainly looking forward to getting my copy. It’s due in the mail tomorrow morning .. I’m not expecting a miraculous transformation of El Mariachi … as I recall, Rodrigo bought a used 16mm camera and persuaded various people he knew to help out both sides of the camera. I think it was mostly handheld and his choice of available lenses was limited. I also recall he did all the cutting and editing in his bedroom … along with the music. But however he managed it, the result is still a good watch (ok .. a little rough around the edges) and certainly impressed the right people. I would struggle to see how it would benefit from the 4k treatment .. although careful application of HDR might improve the overall look somewhat? FYI, the Arrow pack cost me £50 to preorder from HMV … UK taxes and shipping included. I guess that equates to approx $US 60? Not cheap, but I didn’t think it too pricey for the 3 movies in a collector’s edition pack with the extra posters and booklet. I fully agree that Dusk til Dawn really is crying out for a good 4k transfer. Similarly, we need the Sin City films!!
My copy is on its way. I have no problem with mix of 4K and Blu-ray. I would love Arrow to release from dusk til dawn as a stand alone or as with prequels as a big box set. Great review.❤❤❤
DUDE ZAVVI UK HAS ANNOUNCED SOME AWESOME NEW STEELBOOKS TODAY FOR THEIR BIRTHDAY AND SECOND SIGHT BLAIR WITCH ALONG WITH THE ARTWORK. WIZARD OF OZ 4K TOO OMG
I would have been happy to own a chunky box set of just Desperado. Or do a deluxe box for the steelbook version like they used to do but stopped for some reason… I don’t want just the steelbook version because I’m not collecting them
I honestly think that Once Upon a Time In Mexico looked better than Desperado. I don’t think the other 2 movies not being in 4K is a big deal. El Mariachi was so low budget and OUATIM was one of the first films done in digital so yea it would look no different. Fun trilogy though. I got to see Rodriguez play alot of these songs from his movies live a couple weeks ago with his band Chingon.
@MidLevelMedia I don’t get all the negativity. It is clear from the website that just Desperado is in 4K. People who know about film making would know that there is no reason to even invest on a 4K transfer of the other two. Let alone charge you for two. The box is $60 at Arrow for 4 discs including an impressive 4K of Desperado, so stop whining.
@@midlevelmedia oh sorry not YOU. When I reply it automatically mentions your name. Meant the general replies from people here. You state it exactly right as for the other two a 4K transfer won’t be of added value.
In aword no, did you buy it, with only 1 4k, what happened? I remember seeing Desparado years ago, sometimes these labels make wierd decisions, fans should avoid it.
I think I like Once Upon a Time in Mexico more than Desperado. I really enjoyed Johnny Depp’s character he was a good addition and carried the film imo.
Not at all, in my opinion. El Mariachi itself feels like a prototype for Desperado and Once Upon A Time gives enough context for Desperado that you can watch it standalone and you’ll be just fine. (Which was the first of the 3 I watched when I was younger.) Of course, watching them all in sequence is pretty fun to see both Rob’s evolution as a filmmaker, but also the fun nods to the original film, such as seeing Carlos Gallardo featured in Desperado and Planet Terror.
The short answer is no. Desperado is pretty much a remake of El Mariachi with a bigger budget. OUATIM has no connections to the other 2 other than the Mariachi character.
Short answer: no. This is mainstream stuff you probably already own multiple versions. Desperado 4k will be out as standalone in the new year. Guaranteed.
I didn't like the other two movies as movies, so no matter if they were native 4K or not, I wouldn't want them taking up valuable shelf space that could instead be used for two more movies that I love. Desperado only for me...and not for $100, either.
I'm going to pass on this set. I'll just get the standalone steelbook of Desperado. I just can't justify paying that much for the box. When the other 2 films are the same transfer as the Blu-ray set. Also I really don't like the artwork on the box.
Amazon Canada (guess Amazon US as well) is garbage these days, and maybe because there is no other place to get some 4K movies, sometimes it is better and cheaper to get from the US (bought cheaper Sudden death from US), Arrow movies are on sale now at B&N right now so you can get all these movies way cheaper
I'm sorry but Desperado is not in the same league as Pulp Fiction at all. I always found it very over-rated as RR had clearly been influenced / borrowed alot from John Woo. Desperado is a good movie and there is alot to enjoy but its not a masterpiece, the least said about Once Upon a Time in Mexico the better! Just my thoughts.
Why should anyone be bothered that Willem Defoe plays a Mexican? Robert Rodriguez, a man of Mexican heritage mind you, was the one who wanted him to play the role anyway. Ben Kingsley played Ghandi. Alec Guiness played Prince Faisal. Tony Stark played Black Panther. Good luck finding a Sergio Leone western that doesn't have a character of one ethnicity playing another. My point is, the job of an actor is to pretend to be someone they're not... and that's what Willem Defoe is doing...his job...being someone he's not. Just enjoy it.
Alec Guiness playing Prince Faisal isn't a good example. They literally had to do blackface on him for him to play an Arab character. It's particularly bad when they had an excellent Egyptian actor playing Sherif Ali so they could've found someone better suited for the role, they just didn't want to. This isn't to say Guiness didn't do a good job, of course he was really good, but nowadays the role would've gone to someone else and with good reason.
Nice try to sell it dude, but for just one 4K disc and a slip cover, nah i am good. It's way way overpriced. Waiting for a full trilogy 4K attempt from another company or a really good sale, on this poor package.
Not trying to sell. Just giving information and my honest opinion. There’s around 3 hours of new features and interviews here. You don’t get that kind of work from other labels and studios. If you don’t value that, then that’s fine, but to me that makes the Boxset worth it.
I think that from the beginning they said that only one would be in 4K, it is not only Arrow video but all physical 4K are overpriced (Amazon) because many stores stopped selling them, have you seen the $52 dollars for the inside out 2 4K movie? So you are paying 4 dollars for each blu ray on this collection
@@lpf45372 $76.21 w/o shipping I believe is way to much for only having 1 4K movie. I bought it from arrow, so they will get the criticism, for putting out trash for a box set. The old directors commentary track to El Mariachi was a phenomenal. It was basically film school for the 90's indie spirit.
