    Eddie Izzard : Though tonsils are by the esophagus, they are lymphatic organs like the appendix which is just in front of the cecum. The cecum is almost as fascinating as the omentum is weird (amoeboid). It's a fermentation chamber to make gas it can force out to propel poop up the ascending colon, thus gas pains are often in the lower right abdomen. The appendix is a back up plan in case the cecum accidently pushes poop backward against the one-way ileocecal valve (into the ileum of the small intestines), which can esp happen during constipation since cramping alone won't always push cement cylinders upward against gravity. The gas-pain-like feelings in the upper right & upper left abdomen are at the corner turns into the transverse and descending colon. The upper right is worse since it takes effort from the ascending colon which is already fighting gravity (& has to be distinguished from gallstones, which, btw, develop more layers when high blood cholesterol is dumped &/or lowered quickly). And that concludes today's unsolicited lecture. 😁🙃

    I just love Eddie Izzard.
    But he should be a bit ashamed of himself for going on for several minutes about how the appendix serves no function and therefore needs must serve as an example of how intelligent design is senseless.
    For as far back as 1981, S. Scadding of Toronto showed what many others have since affirmed: the appendix is actually a repository of and a production unit for bacteria which serve a function in cleaning the alimentary canal.
    He then ridicules the four stomachs of the cow resulting from design.
    BUT in 1968, at a conference headed The Alpbach Symposium: Beyond Reductionism, Hugo von Bertalanffy said he could not understand why, when a horse managed well enough with just one stomach, it had proved of survival value for a cow, of similar size and diet, to evolve four.
    In his opinion there was zero evidence to support the basic Darwinian tenet that progression from less to more complex organisms was to do with better adaptation or production of greater offspring.

    • @Callanthekiter
      @Callanthekiter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm a little confused by the second part of this. Eddie (comically) asserts that cows having four stomachs is silly, and you say "BUT this biologist doesn't understand why cows need four stomachs"; aren't the two of them saying the same thing? Also, I'm pretty sure that "progression from less to more complex organisms" isn't a thing even in the original Darwinian formulation of evolution; there have been some very notable instances where complexity is adaptive, but usually it isn't. Also, just to note: cows digest grass using a specialized stomach, and horses (etc.) do it with a specialized intestine; the latter case just gets less attention because rumination makes the former more visible.
      Maybe he could have made better use of a more esoteric example of a trait that's no longer adaptive, but I'd say that comedic license covers characterizing the appendix as unintelligent; modern human lifestyles make us prone to appendicitis, and the organ (despite having an evolutionary purpose) may no longer be adaptive. His characterization of Moses as historical is rather more questionable.
