Don't let them pass the armour ban bill. Here's a Canadian telling you "once it's done, it's an impossible road back to sanity"! Don't let them pass the bill!!!!!
I purchased my AR500 plates last year. Before I did, I watched EVERY torture test video I could find and these plates take a pounding and just keep coming back for more. Thanks for this vid and putting the time in to make it.
I would like to see this test done with those shock indicator pads behind the armor to see how much energy is being transferred to the person wearing armor. A slug might not penetrate but it would be nice to see if there was sufficient shock to incapacitate them from the impact.
Wouldn't a slug put you in a world of hurt even with the body armor on? I would think the blunt trauma of the impact would be pretty severe. I'd like to have seen a Brenneke Black Magic 3" Magnum. Great vid!
Perhaps the most important video you have ever done. Nothing gets the point across better than a hand full of lead. Thank you to AR500 for supplying the body armor.
Recently purchased some AR500 armor and waiting for it to arrive. This and other videos I have seen are definitely confidence boosters for my purchase. Keep up the good work guys...love your channel
ive wanted to see this plate vs slugs forever and couldnt find any videos of it, thank you guys so much for showing this it was awesome. great job and love the new range btw.
Slugs are very effective against body armor.. in the Dregas rampage we was wearing body armor and killed a number of people despite being shot at by handguns, M14 etc. Was a rifled slug that put him down.. "After the gunfire died down, agents moved a police vehicle to the scene in an attempt to evacuate Pfeifer before he bled to death. But once the vehicle approached, Drega began firing again, forcing the officers to take cover. Eventually, NH state trooper Charles West and Border Patrol agent Stephen Brooks advanced up a slope to Drega's position. As Drega stepped out from behind a tree to fire, Brooks opened up with his M14 rifle while West fired a slug from his Remington 870 shotgun, killing Drega and ending the gunfight.[2]"
Ordered my Level III set with the Coyote Carrier a few days ago. I am not made of money by any means and I just think it is a fantastic deal. These tests definitely sold me. Thanks to the IV8888 crew and to AR500 Armor!
Should be fine, especially if you've got soft inserts (as you should) under you should walk it off. Shotgun slugs cant penetrate shit and a steel plate spreads the force over the area it covers very well.
tommy gun False if you where wearing a 500 armor plate you'd defiantly feel it. But no pain besides possable spalling. think about the guys shooting the shotgun, if that shotgun was not hurting them. Every action has equal and opposite reaction. Newton
***** we all miss barry. that short li'l fucker was so full of energy, a real badger; wolverine. would be interesting if they could get enough info on him to do a 10 minute documentary on him, for edcucational and entertainment purposes. i feel like i never knew enough about him, but seeing his passion and hearing his tone of voice being so 'matter of fact' when it came to gun gripes always made me come back. i still enjoy the channel for different reasons.
I love that Remington 870 Marine Magnum. I have one very nice gun to shoot. I have short arms so I had a shorter 12" tactical stock put on so I could handle it a bit easier. I used to get bad bruising from hugging a shotty too tight to my shoulder because I was stretching too far to handle the pull. I was amazed at having just 2" difference made handling my 870 much easier and comfortable for me. The only downside is letting someone with "normal" arms shoot it they tend to let it smack them in the face.
I heard the steel ones are much heavier but the advantage is they can take more than 1 or 2 hits like the ceramic ones. Also, if you drop the ceramic ones just right it'll crack and wind up being useless unlike steel. I had the medium ceramic plates each time I went to Iraq as well. They seem much thicker than these steel ones. Oh yeah, ceramic is also way more expensive.
Jay i would agree steel is in fact more durable and versatile than ceramic, however steel transfers more heat and kinetic energy, not to mention that every time there is an impact there is allot of splash from a bullet(on bare steel). i have been considering getting ceramic plates, but i want test them more extensively before i got them. "and they are not very different when it comes to flexibility" i own a set of steel plates they are alright. seems that lining helped mitigating that splash on impact. "i tested it myself." however with what seems like another scare tactic (HR5344) i think i want to get another set of plates that are lighter, for the sake of giving my already f*cked up spine a break. and these seems to hold up quite nicely as i continue to research more about them.
Yup, went to the stan in support of OEF XII wearing ceramic plates. Fuck those things, would have gladly taken the extra weight of steel. My civilian buddy has an old skool BDU IBA with AR 500 plates in it. I think the old skool IBAs suck ass but its got kevlar and badass plates so he's not doing too bad.
xander2541 i say ceramic plates are okay for the overall weight and performance they offer, but most of the sh!t that gets issued is way overused. not very serviceable for what its meant to do. "like those green SAPI plates." and though steel is better at keeping things from entering your body. it doesn't necessarily make it the best armor system to distribute kinetic energy and keep you from having second degree burns when there is a fire.
I suppose you're looking at around 14 pounds total if you go with a front and back plate. I think it is plausible to be not that great of a problem. I personally hated my ceramic plates to the point that I just didn't even bother wearing them. I think I'd put one of these in the front, and maybe ignore the rear plate. I don't know, I'd have to wear the armor to find out how bad it feels.
you may not be penetrated by the slug but i would assume that it's still dangerous to be hit by a slug like that. There's a lot of force it may even break something I'd think, and either way youre going to be down and out for a bit.
These videos are great, I bought a set of armor from them a while ago after I saw a video of a plate defeating a 338 lapua magnum round. I hope you guys keep testing this armor, another awesome video.
Joel MacDonald That's where backface deformation comes into play. There's a type of clay used in NIJ testing, and if the divot left in the clay exceeds a limit (44mm), that armor fails against that caliber. I've only found one reference that states NIJ level III will stop 12 gauge slugs @ 1550fps..
Hunter Jordan That really only applies to soft body armor. Steel plates that aren't even being bent in the rear you'll maybe not even notice you got hit in the plate in real combat. You still have quite a bit exposed so you could end up with a wound in a limb, or face, or lower body.
johnfranks Yes, and MMA fighters kick with the force of a car crash and you don't see them kicking people in half. A point to be made is energy can be deflected, and expanded into a wider area further weakening the potential damage it could cause. I'm sure you could see some bruising, or you may not feel much of anything. Hell, it may just feel like someone just kicked you in your body armor. This isn't necessarily going to cause a massive shockwave that smashes bone when it strikes.
"Haven't you guys always wanted to know what would happen when someone gets shot with a shotgun wearing body armor?" I have never seen a shotgun wearing body armor...
5:25 - "I've never really heard of 000". What. The. Fuck. What the actual fuck? How have you never heard of 000? You and the gang are about as fudd as can be, my world is upside down right now.
Nick condo It stays in my bedside 12 gauge. I have been using it for years. When he said that he had never heard of it, I thought to myself, What kind of "gun expert" has never heard of 000 buckshot for a 12 gauge?!?!? That is like saying "I was in the military for 20 years, but I never heard of a 5.56 or .308" =)
You know, and this is meant for all who replied as you all shared pretty much the same amazement. I am a 20+ year vet (retired from active duty June 2009) and although I was/am aware of triple ought buck, it is easy..ESPECIALLY OLD SCHOOLERS who find something that works, works well for what they need, and stay with it. I mean look at the rate of "new & improved" products (some rightfully so) that come out all the time. Now am I totally fudded up because say I choose to still carry the one & original Speer Gold Dot HP's in my EDC Glock 19 (that WILL "git 'er done", or at least I wouldn't want to get hit with one), or am I all fudded up because I don't have some, or never heard of Hornady VXT +P+ W/ Afterburner Mode (which I would probably run out to buy right away IF THEY DID make something like that haha) but know probably 90% of the other brands/types? But I am seeing new and some very innovative shotgun rounds having come out in recent years, I mean hell as a teen in the '80's I had my Browning 12 Gauge and all I remember was either Shot or Slugs. Now YOU CAN GET BOTH IN A SINGLE ROUND! Haha. I suppose if "Shotties" were the ONLY platform I bet my life with and all I knew, then there would be no excuse. But guns? I DEFINITELY do not discriminate and consider myself an "expert & all knowing" in any (well maybe exclude Glocks and 1911's but now I am getting way off topic haha). My personal experience, after losing count after 6 or 7 of my AR's (each built for a specific purpose) I have to admit outside of the 5.56 & .308 as I had a "my special" M-14 that was my go to when I definitely needed to go "Tango Down" at a distance, that is all I really know. I mean now we got 300 Blackout/Whisper, 6.8 SPC, 7.62x39 Uppers, the latest NATO round 5.45x45, & .338 Lapua (which IF I do build another AR, THAT is the one that I am going to go with...but what do I know about my choices of ammo? Squat. Never needed too. I dunno just my 62 grains worth ;-)
I really enjoy these videos. If you ever do a test like this again, could you toss in a #2 steel shot 3" mag for comparison? I'm curious to see how much difference a harder shot would be, since all tests were done with soft lead. Thanks again for the informative videos.
Can not wait to see the videos of the long range body armor shoot, man thats going to be nice! Great video by the way i ordered some ar500 not long back great stuff!
Jay Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, for a bullet to knock down a man, the man shooting the bullet would be knocked down too... Newton's law..
Yes, but the person doing the shooting braces for the recoil. The person getting shot could be just standing there. As TH-cam has shown us if you don't hold a shotgun correctly it'll knock you on your behind.
THANK YOU ERIC AND RAY i always LOVE learning more about ballistics and home defense stopping power ( GOD forbid im ever in a situation such as that) ill second the request for the make and model of your home defense shotgun. Keep up the good work! - - THE OZARKS
I'm curious to see if a proper length barrel (23-28") would affect velocity enough to cause actual penetration. I do not believe that the rounds produced the stated velocities from that 18"ish barrel.
I already saw the video with this plate tested with 308's and 357 and such and I don't see how a shotgun test can be more compelling. From where I stand I am 100 per cent convinced , this armour plate is good enough for law enforcement and even military and more than good for civilian use !
awesome video I'm starting to really dig the shot gun for home defence and hunting, since you're going to test the armour plating with .308,.338 why not give the 7.62x54R armour penetrating round a try as well.
Thank you very much fella's, AR500 should send you a big commission check, deff put to bed ANY hesitations & doubts I had about AR500 plates, I'm sold!!!!
To be fair, I already knew what happens. One of my buddies who served in the Royal Marines got shot in the back with a shotgun when clearing a house in Iraq. A National Guard dude was just too keen to get in and start blasting. Knocked my friend out. A few inches higher and it would have taken off his head. Needless to say the National Guard muppet got the shit beaten out of him by a bunch of angry Royal Marines later that day.
If this was Iraq he would have been wearing the osprey armour system which uses ceramic plates and soft armour inserts so it would protect you a lot more than these steel plates, osprey used level 4 ceramic plates and level 3a soft armour panels which would stop the energy transfer a lot more than the little steel plate here
Somebody with a really good hi speed camera needs to record a projectile hitting the plate, I wanna see how the coating on the plate warps around the projectile.
Hi Eric, please make a video about home defense firearm options. Consider showcasing shotgun options with 20 gauge. Even going with youth shotgun options. Thanks.
We did some tests with 20ga and 16ga short barreled shotguns with slug and buckshot. Both make excellent home defense guns. Buckshot and slugs are pretty easy to find for the 20 ga, but much harder to find for the 16ga. Both give good shot patterns to around 25 yards. The guns are light weight and handle well.
tyler east We did several videos on that also. Buckshot patterns and block wall penetration tests with slugs. The slugs did not perform well on the wall, you had to reduce the wall to get to the target.
I enjoy your videos, I have no chance of having a day at the range, as I live in downtown Tokyo Japan, but I do enjoy the videos. A question, the armour is covered with the anti-spalling coating, which prevents the slugs for balls or whatever from bouncing off the plate and hitting you in the face, great idea for sure, but I notice the plate carrier that you are using has a bunch of pockets right over the plate. Looks like a place for some mags or a cell phone, flashlight or a knife...? What happens from the fragments of the stuff in the pockets of the carrier if they are hit with a slug etc? I'd like to see a test of that, what if you have various items on the pockets? Maybe it is not a good idea to carry some items in those pockets? Maybe the carrier should not have pockets in the area that covers the plate? Not criticizing, just curious. Cheers!
I have some ar500 target gongs. What is the typical thickness for armor like this? The rule of thumb I follow for gongs: 1/4" for pistols and rimfire, 3/8" for centerfire rifle or magnum handguns, 1/2" for .30-06 and bigger. It's not that those thicknesses get penetrated, but repeated cratering increases ricochet risk for the shooter
I wish you guys would do a video on what you can and cannot shoot out of a shotgun . Like whether or not you can shoot slugs , oobuck ,bird shot or other types of loads out of smoothbore barrels or rifled barrels , barrels with chokes different types of chokes . If Different types of loads will damage different types of barrels. Just to make sure that people use the right ammo for the gun that they have . Thanks , Steve .
LOL someone seems to be so f'd up they think body armor kills ---- They should re-read the instructions: it protects, not kills. Love the vids Eric keep em comin brother. (and btw thx for your service)
i'm not bitchin around here, but i have to ask: no light/sling on the home defense shotgun generally or did you take off the extra stuff for this video? just a purely informative question. really cool testing. for the price, and in a home defense situation where you can kinda disregard the weight of the plates, the ar500 stuff is hard to beat. thanks ar500 for providing them to the iv8888 team!
I don't know if anyone has said this already of if y'all thought about this but, to test the anti-spalling coating shoot a piece of AR500 with frangible ammo with various calibers. Could y'all do that and post it on here?
Purchased my first AR15 from Moss Pawn today. Best customer service in the world. Taught me alot about the AR15. Thanks an salute to yall.

kop4321 yeah their trauma pads are going to soften the blow but a 1oz slug in the right spot could still break a rib or two
not as big an issue as a shotgun shot to the stomach

Thanks Eric and Ray what an amazing product review , this proves to me that AR500 Armor is the best body armor on the market thanks for sharing
"They just mess things up, you know? That's why I like 'm."
LOL
I have the same feeling for shotgun slugs... The impact of a 19mm projectile with about 2.5 times the kinetic energy of a ak74 bullet is jaw dropping!
that shotgun sure likes plates, and gelatin.
seems better than the plates that issued to me when i went to Afghanistan. thanks for the link.

You should try the Brenneke 3" Black Magic Magnums. Those things are the king of all slugs.
Even without penetration, you would still receive significant injury from the impact.
I doubt it Joel MacDonald. That's not how guns work.

I'm curious to see if a proper length barrel (23-28") would affect velocity enough to cause actual penetration. I do not believe that the rounds produced the stated velocities from that 18"ish barrel.
Ray was smiling! He looked like he was having a blast! No pun intended!
I already saw the video with this plate tested with 308's and 357 and such and I don't see how a shotgun test can be more compelling. From where I stand I am 100 per cent convinced , this armour plate is good enough for law enforcement and even military and more than good for civilian use !
Thanks, Guys. I was actually curious about slugs and body armor. Nice video.
Even if the plate prevents penetration, wouldn’t the sheer momentum of the load knock the target over and slow him down or stop him?
awesome video I'm starting to really dig the shot gun for home defence and hunting, since you're going to test the armour plating with .308,.338 why not give the 7.62x54R armour penetrating round a try as well.
Missin Barry right now.... Great video, glad to catch back up with you guys
Well I've learned even with body armor a 12gauge shotgun will still give you a bad day you might not bleed but you're still going to hurt
The force alone will likely crush your ribs and cause organ damage and possible internal bleeding.
Thank you very much fella's, AR500 should send you a big commission check, deff put to bed ANY hesitations & doubts I had about AR500 plates, I'm sold!!!!
Great to see Ray again.
Keyser Söze do you play WAR Z2?
Doubt it
Cool story bro
And everyone clapped.
If this was Iraq he would have been wearing the osprey armour system which uses ceramic plates and soft armour inserts so it would protect you a lot more than these steel plates, osprey used level 4 ceramic plates and level 3a soft armour panels which would stop the energy transfer a lot more than the little steel plate here
I love these types of videos
ooo Looking forward to the 300 win mag, 338 lapua, and 50 cal video.
Joe Turtle without the plate carrier looked more like Quasimodo LOL at 15:10
Yeah body armour is illegal in Australia however if you get the right license you can get any gun
Nice Video!! I cant wait for my plates to arrive from AR500 Armor...looks like they will hold up...when your life depends on it!!
"Our Joe Turtle more or less turned into Joe Turkey."
"Its 95 degrees out here, its hot as hell" In Nevada those choice of words are funny...
3 1/2 buckshot next time!
Finally, a video of shotgun shells vs body armor. Thanks
Somebody with a really good hi speed camera needs to record a projectile hitting the plate, I wanna see how the coating on the plate warps around the projectile.
Great vid guys!!!!
Cheers!
Great video guys!!
if there was a mag in that pouch that got shot would it set off the ammo inside ?
No
***** no it wouldn't they tested it on another page the bullet moved faster than the primer and just destroyed the cartridge
Should of put some safety glasses on the dummy to see in any fragments even got near his eyes just saying
I've got those same active ear muffs. Love those things!
3:48 same load I use in my house gun 3in 00 buck 15 lead balls in a short barrel 12ga. Nasty round love it!!
Doing an awesome job with the videos.
Is it a base layer coating or a built up coating
I am really looking forward to those videos!
Hey, I just saw Eric and Barry on tv. Prepper hillbillies, thought TH-cam took over my tv. Nice to see Barry again.
Great vid guys.
i'm not bitchin around here, but i have to ask:
no light/sling on the home defense shotgun generally or did you take off the extra stuff for this video? just a purely informative question.
really cool testing. for the price, and in a home defense situation where you can kinda disregard the weight of the plates, the ar500 stuff is hard to beat.
thanks ar500 for providing them to the iv8888 team!
Ray is the man. Story over
wow thats an amazing spall liner
I would love to see some flechette rounds against different types of hard and soft armor.
Is it possible to reuse the ballistic gel ?
That is some impressive armor! Great testing.
7:26 that worlds called Australia
I don't know if anyone has said this already of if y'all thought about this but, to test the anti-spalling coating shoot a piece of AR500 with frangible ammo with various calibers. Could y'all do that and post it on here?
It would be cool to see tests of fragmentation vests versus shotguns and pistols. A lot of people can't afford more advanced protection.
Would love to see some testing of buck and ball rounds such as the centurion load
If you get hit by a 12gauge while wearing body armor you are still going to the hospital.
Do the plates tested have the build up?
