  • This nasty piece of Manzanita burl has been glaring at me from the shelf for the past 2 years or so, and after a hiatus away from the lathe (getting married), I finally did something with it. I hope you enjoy! Make sure to watch through to the end for a special set of glamour shots!
Comment below letting me know what you think! Also, let me know if you prefer this more ASMR-like content without so much music. I'm trying new things and would love to get some feedback!

I love that you left that almost primordial edge on there. So often in woodturning videos, I see artists take these gorgeous, distinctive chunks of wood and lathe away all the most interesting bits. The end result is always beautiful, but so often I find myself going, "oh, but if they could've saved a hint of that one feature..." and here you have. Bravo!

Wow, I was wondering what this work would turn into the entire time and I never would have guessed it even though the title gives it away so clearly. This is such a phenomenal fusion of functionality, craftsmanship and aestheticism! Love it!

I was amazed at the amount of wood stabiliser used on this piece. At one point I did not see how you would be able to get the wood to a point where you could apply a finish. I should never doubt your ability to get a polished result. An absolutely stunning piece of functional Art my friend. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

By far, THE most original idea I've seen in woodturning to date. For most of the video, I was trying to decide what you were attempting to create. Then, I saw two bowls. Then, I saw one bowl being used as a lid for the other. Then... you punched a hole right through the top bowl. 😮
Was that a mistake? Did he screw it up? How's he going to repair that huge hole?
This was an amazing creation. I loved every minute of it. The finished product....I never had a clue. I never would have guessed coffee grinder.
Absolutely beautiful piece and a truly amazing concept in design.

Nice new angles and editing on the woodturning shots, I wasn't that interested in the coffee brewing shots myself. And, I usually watch woodturning videos with the sound off, it's an auditory break for me. **Do you have a good place for me to learn about woods, glues, and finishes? Perhaps the most unique use of Manzanita (or any other timber) burl I've seen. Beautiful!

There were segments where I was a nervous wreck, laughing at myself after a phase was completed successfully.
Watched so many woodturning videos over the years, not sure why I get so invested in yours. Brilliant video.
I could smell the steam at the end.

Thanks so much! Yeah, there were a few nerved-racking moments, but it was nice having my shop smell like fresh coffee!

Brilliant idea and work, love it. And now you can finally enjoy a real coffee and not an instant powder coffee substitute. Congrats on getting married. Wishing both of you a long and happy life!

Oh yeah! This was fun. Once again just a plain odd shape piece of wood, and wham, a beautiful created object comes forth. You are a craftsman. Skill and talent is not lost. Thanks so much for a beautiful piece.

Glad I stuck with this one... I've seen a lot of mutant wood lumps turned into bowls with gnarly edges [with resin and glitter usually], and I think that's been 'done' now. Your project kept me intrigued - you brought some finesse and function to it, gave it a life, a use... not just more 'wobbly wood' - with novelty as the only reason for existing. I love how the shape of the burl acts as a bean-catcher at the top, that is very pleasing... My only constructive critique is, perhaps the lower part should have a 'friction fit' to the upper, so you don't actively have to support both parts when grinding [to stop the coffee grinds coming out], as the burl edge makes such a chunky inviting grip area instead. I'm sure you could still introduce a friction fit, if you wanted, by laying a sliver of balsa, or letting in a rubber gasket into the rim of the lower bowl part.
    Lovely work, well done!

Thank you Paul! Great ideas, and yes perhaps that bit of live edge could be used as a handle, but the undercut helps with holding pressure in the center while grinding.

Absolutely stunning! Amazing what you can turn out from a chunk of wood.
