I’ve been making this cake since the pandemic started. Finally got around to doing it after years of saying I would. Now I will never not make it! It brought back all those memories from my K-12 years as an LAUSD kid! Best coffee cake ever!
Hi Lisa, welcome!! This makes me sooo happy! It is the real deal and I love to hear when childhood memories are recaptured! So happy you are enjoying it during these times. It is the best coffee cake ever!! 💖🍸
I'm in confinement and I now live in France. I made this last night and served it for dessert with coffee for my French husband and he said it's the best cake he's ever tried and I should make it for all our guests. I'm not sure if he's exaggerating or not, but this was my favorite cake in school in the 90's- 00's! Fremont High School c/o 02
RetroBarbie!!! First can I tell you that I love everything about your screen name!!! Oh wow, France! You absolutely made my day to hear all this!! I'm so happy it worked out and brought back some childhood memories! Freemont was quite a ways away from me but so happy that cake was served everywhere! I'm confined too, but still making videos! Thanks so much for stopping by and have fun learning history through food!!! Stay safe!!! 💖🍸
I went to Commonwealth Elementary in the 80’s and I totally remember this cake! I swear I could smell it as you were making it and I haven’t thought about it in years. Just happened to stumble across your channel and this brought back so many memories . Thank you for sharing!
Hi Alejandra! I'm so happy you stumbled! ❤️ If you make it the taste will bring back even more memories! It will be like you are back at Commonwealth! 😊And I have so many more videos that hopefully will bring back some more childhood memories and smiles! That is what my channel is all about! Have fun learning history through food here! ❤️🍸
I grew up in Central Oregon. Our thing was cinnamon rolls. The best in the whole world. Either that or hot buttered yeast rolls and hot chocolate. It gets very cold there in the winter time. My dad would take me to school, but first, we had to stand in line for gas at about 5 in the morning. So I would get to school around 7:30 or 8, sit in the cafeteria with my rolls and chocolate. It's actually one of my favorite memories. I didn't care much for junior high either, although I had some great teachers and some good experiences. High school and college, things took off!
Thank you so much for sharing your memories!! We had the cinnamon rolls too, they were so good!!! I do have the recipe but it's a yeast roll and would make for a very long video! LOL!! Yeah, Jr high was rough but adulthood..... so much better!!!! I hope you have such a wonderful week!
I'm actually making this for my wife's 50th birthday cake. She always tells me how good this was. Thank you. And with a face like mine...the kids were to scared to tease me. 😉
Hi Herbie! I'm so sorry I missed your comment! Happy 50th to your wife! What a great idea for a birthday cake! How did it go? Did it bring back memories? I cant tell you how much I love that idea!!! Thank you for stopping by, I hope to hear from you in another video! Hope you find more childhood memories here! 💖🍸
Hi Jill, such a great coffee cake, and I love that you share the story behind all of the food you make in such great detail! I happen to be a teacher, and although there isn’t a staple cake in our school district, the kids really enjoyed Oreo cookie cake pops when I made them last Christmas! Thank you again!
T. Cobb’s Eats You are a teacher? That’s so awesome! This was such a staple in all the schools! Although Oreo cookie cake pops sound sooooo good!!!! I hope you give it a try! And if you do, please let me know!!
@@yesterkitchen Yes, I teach elementary school music. I have yet to see coffee cake served to the kids, maybe I can do something about that this school year :) I will definitely let you know when I make this coffee cake! Thank you again!
YES...YES...YES!!!! I've been craving this specific coffee cake, on and off for yearssss. I'm making this asap, so when I eat it, I can close my eyes and be transported back to high school all over again. 😊
Hi ohgrowup! What a great name!! How cool! You were about an hour away from me! I'm so happy you remember and love this cake! This is it! I hope you give it a try and get some childhood memories! Have fun exploring more retro history through food here! And have a beautiful day! 🍸❤️
Your show has always been great and you just keep getting better and better! Your enthusiasm for this coffee cake has this recipe going on our "gotta make it" list. Jill, you have an excellent camera presence and you are so watchable. We really dig you and your videos!
You guys always make my day! Thank you so very much! This is definitely a must-try, especially around the holidays. Nutmeg just adds a certain Warm Spice and for me, this cake is nothing but memories! Have the BEST day!!
OMG! I am so happy that I found you! I have been craving this for eons! I graduated in 1975 from North Hollywood High, in the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles and this is what I lived on at first recess, every, single, day. Thank you for the recipe. I now live in Colorado and will have to try and figure out how to tweak it for the altitude, but hey, it's a great start. Thank you so much. I was made fun of too and I am sorry you experienced that in school. But we are survivors. You are a beautiful soul. Thank you.
Hi Kelly! I am so happy you found me too! Thank you so much for your kind words. NoHo High, pretty close to where I was! Yeah it was tough and I'm so sorry you experienced that too. Sometimes if feels good to talk about it to move on. :) I wish I was familiar with high altitude baking. But if you figure it out, please post it so if anyone else is in your situation, they can make it too! And I hope you do! This is it exactly! All the memories will flood in! I hope you have fun exploring more retro history and childhood memories through food here!!! 🍸💖
@@yesterkitchen My husband was also a fan of this coffee cake and I told him that I found the recipe and he got so excited. I will definitely let you know how it turns out. Thx again and God Bless.
Went to Miles Avenue elementary in L.A and lived this cake I’m going to make it thank you! I was wondering if you or anyone else remembers this other cake that came in a picnic red and white cardboard container with clear plastic on top it was like a peanut butter cake omg it’s been so long
Hi Emily! Welcome to my channel! When you make it, please let me know! This is straight from LAUSD so it is the real deal! How many memories will come back when you make it! And while I don't remember the packaging, maybe every school is different, I am familiar with the peanut butter cake! I've had a lot of requests for it so it is on my very long to-do list. But stick with me and I will get to it! Have fun learning history through food here! And have a wonderful weekend! 🍸❤️
I went to school in SoCal (not LA), but I definitely remember some of the food, made from scratch in a fully equipped school cafeteria by the “lunch ladies”. My favorites were the chili beans and this dense, dark chocolate cake with white frosting, also the macaroni & cheese & fried fish on meatless Fridays. TBH, I probably would have starved without the school lunches.
LOL! This is fabulous! And so true! Those snacks and lunches were amazing. You just triggered the fish stick memory with that one stripe of ketchup! I saved the stripe for last. And today....I can't stand ketchup, LOL!
This looks great! I went to school in Texas. I remember 2 desserts "Ranger Cookies" and the cinnamon rolls. I remember teachers buying trays of cinnamon rolls to take home.
I love that! We had really good cinnamon rolls back in school too. But those were back in the days when everything in the school cafeteria with scratch-made. Not that way anymore. I'm so happy to hear your memories! And I do you know about Ranger cookies, so good! So happy you stop by! 🍸❤️
I was in elementary school in the late 80's and loved this cake. There was also another that I loved that had peanuts on top which was delicious. I guess they stopped making it in the 90s since I never got it all through middle school or high school.
Hi CF!!! Yeah, others have brought up this "peanut bread" and it sounds YUM! I guess my schools didn't have it (at least during my school years) because I have no memory of it. WIsh I did! But I have so many childhood memory recipes on my channel. I hope you check them out and they spark more memories for you! 💖🍸
Funny you say that! I grew up in Georgia all went through school there. They made the absolute best spice cake or coffee cake, I don't know which one, I'm thinking it may have been coffee cake, but also like you in elementary school only tho, now that I read your comment, I don't remember getting it in middle or high
I just want to say, Thank You for posting my favorite cake of all time. I've tried other recipes that indicated that this was the cake we had in school, and they weren't, but you have shown us the real deal. I can tell just by looking at it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Gotta go. On my way to the store to pick up a couple of the ingredients. Um, Um, Um.
Thank you Jill for posting this. The written directions don't let the baker know when to add the oil.....you may want to edit for those of us who like to just follow the written and not watch the video. Absolutely delicious! Sincerely, this North Hollywood High graduate.
Did I miss that? I try to make sure every step is there because I know many don't follow the video. I'll check it out! Thanks for letting me know. I know several have made it so wasn't aware there was an issue.... two minutes later..... All fixed!😊 Happy new year!! 🎉❤️🍸
Hi Claudia!!! Welcome! I'm so happy you are here! We were just a few hours drive apart! Thank you for telling me!!!I am honored that your sister made this for you! I hope it brought back lots of memories! It sure did for me! What a great idea for a birthday cake! I hope you have fun exploring more retro history and childhood memories through food here! Have a beautiful weekend! 💖🍸
I am so happy! I was actually closer to Calabasas HS but my friends went to ECR...so I did too! When did you go there? And if you loved that coffee cake, you will be very happy. This is exactly the same and sure to bring back memories! 💖🍸
Thanks! It came in my grandson's to go bag this morning, and he wouldn't share even one bite with me. I think they use at least part whole wheat flour now (probably WW pastry flour), according to the label. But oh, so delicious. My favorite thing to get from the hash house was chili mac--never had any like it since I graduated from high school in 1965.
Hi Laura! Welcome! Not a single bite, hmmmmmm. Well at least you can make it! Yeah, this is the original recipe so I'm not surprised that the recipe has been altered. In the 50s, white flour was it. I can't thank you enough for sharing your story! Meeting people through family stories makes me so happy! These are the memories that will last forever! I hope you have fun exploring my other videos and I can't wait to hear from you again! Have a wonderful week! 🍸❤️
Hi Jill! Love this. Even though coffee cake is a staple in our house because it’s quick and easy to grab in the morning (and sugar is life 😁). .... I don’t think I’ve ever tried to make it before. They served this in school? Nice. This is being saved in my play list! Have a great Sunday! ❤️
Wahoo! This one is sooooo good and yep, every school in my district made it and it sold out every day! The balance with the touch of nutmeg is so perfect! And yes...sugar IS life, LOK! Let me know when you try it!
For me, the only thing good about high school was having this cake for breakfast. You have brought back fond memories of it...thank you and great video 😁👍
"Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear"...back in 1972, I started school at Sutter Jr. High and I couldn't believe how much great food there was! There were two coffee cakes. This one, the Old Fashioned, and the the other "Sweet Roll". They were served everyday. The old fashioned was much smaller and cost $0.35. The sweet roll was larger and cost $0.10. The old fashioned was very good, but you didn't get as good of a deal on it. So, being a poor broke kid who mowed lawns on the weekend to have money for food during the week, I bought the larger sweet roll. (It would be nice to get the recipe for the sweet roll.) I thought it was funny that when you mentioned adding nuts to it, I was thinking that chopped walnuts on top, mixed in to the batter, or both would be good. I love chocolate...would it be good to add chocolate chips? Perhaps drizzle chocolate sauce on top? Way too much sugar! ...but oh so good! Hi El Camino, I went to Taft; say hello! It would be nice to hear from you. R, Steve
Hi Steve! Wow, a neighbor! I'm blown away that you remember the prices. We definitely had the Sweet Roll as well. I do have the recipe but it's a yeast dough and would just make too long of a video. I'm actually on Hiatus from filming right now anyway. I actually got so many requests for the peanut butter bread that I have a video of that as well. We didn't have it in our school but it sure is good. And my goal is to always share the original recipe. But I love to hear what people do with them from there. So add away and let me know how it came out! Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you find more childhood food memories here on my channel!
@@yesterkitchen Good morning, I moved to Santa Clarita. Where are you now? The Hart District out here does not have the tasty treats we had. I have several recipes that are crowd pleasers. However, as an older guy, the sugar and carbs make me "fat, sick, and nearly dead" as Joe Cross would say. ...tollhouse cookies with a Reeses peanut butter cup baked inside, the upside down chocolate chip sour cream coffee cake, and of course the cinnamon bread. Ah, but what do I know? ;) R, Steve
@@yesterkitchen Yes! I am new. I went looking for the LAUSD coffee cake videos and found yours. I think yours was the third and I saw that you had gone to El Camino (Platt and Valley Circle if I remember correctly). Good for you that you escaped! ...mostly. Palm Springs is a step up from the Valley. The valley's gone downhill steadily since 1992. My wife and I have both lost lots of blubber ever since we started eliminating sugar and most carbs from our diet last year. That's the irony of it, we create these great treats, but shouldn't eat them. The Christmas season was a train wreck for me, but these family classics are just oh so good!!! My wife is going to teach our niece how to make the cinnamon bread next week; I can't resist. I actually covet the cinnamon bread (pretty bad, huh?) Oh well. Thanks for sayin' hi. R, Steve
I would love it if you could get ahold of the 1970's school district lunch Spiced Pumpkin Bread recipe. Found one similar but not quite the same. Loved that bread sooooooo much.
Hi KM! I can definitely do some research in the new year. I did the Peanut Butter Bread if you remember that. :) 💖🍸 th-cam.com/video/hIhYOgc8y1A/w-d-xo.html

I notice the topping didn’t seem quite right. It was a little more loose than what I remembered. I remembered that the topping was more clumped and even had clumpy sugary bits mixed into the cake itself. I’m going to have to experiment a little more.
Wow one of my favorites thanks for this amazing recipe and mouth was watering while you were cooking I could just imagine cutting myself a piece for morning breakfast with my cappuccino. Love your addition of butter milk in your coffee cake amazing recipe I will definitely try
Wine&Dine with Jeff Did you have this cake in school?? This is the original recipe from 1954 and it’s perfect! It definitely stood the test of time! It will totally be BFF’s with cappuccino!!!
Been searching for this recipe since forever lol... I went to Corona Elementary in Bell and to Nimitz Jr High School and this was my favorite along with the peanut butter w peanuts bread🥰👌💙 Thank you for this.
Hi BlueLove! I am so happy you found me! This is definitely it and will bring back so many childhood memories for you!! It gives me so much happiness to hear comments from LAUSD kids! 💖🍸
You are so cool lol and yes it definitely brings back those L.A. County memories💖💙🥰 Although I don't live close by any longer I still tell my kids and grandchildren all about my experiences on how I was raised in the LAUSD. But I do go visit L.A. every now and then💙 Love your vids and how cheerful you are. Your smile is very contagious😁
You don't hear of coffee cake as much anymore and we used to eat it a lot as kids too. Nutmeg does add a ton of flavor. Collage was better for us too. Haha Corner pieces are the best!
LOL!!!! You guys are the best! This is so old school (literally, lol!) and so good. There is just enough nutmeg to say "Hey, I"m here" without taking over the party! 🙃🍸
I grew in Monrovia and we never had this. The only unusual thing I recall was 'Popeye Salad.' It must have had spinach in it but was mostly cole slaw with pineapple & marshmallows. No coffee cake, no peanut butter bars, etc.
Oh Sandra.... I'm so sorry. Kids can be very cruel, can't be? It's a wonderful thing that everybody grows up and hopefully discover the love within them. But this coffee cake is such a great memory! From all the comments I received, it looks like it was very much in LAUSD thing. I hope you have the best day and are enjoying your weekend! And I hope to see your comments on other videos! ♥️🍸
I want Burbank Unified and we had it there too. In still waiting for my delivery !!. A little drizzle on top would be even more yummy. They serve something like this before your breakfast at the Egg House in Simi. Another good video. Thanks Jill!!
I went to catholic schools except for two years, 9th at Bancroft & 10th at Fairfax but it was at Bancroft when I discovered that fabulous coffee cake during recess. I've oftened thought about it and now you've done an excellent presentation on how to make it! Guess what I'll be baking? 😉
Went to school in West Bend WI. I have been searching for yrs for the recipe for Peanutbutter bars. They were sweet little chewy with peanuts & sometimes a thin chocolate glaze. The recipe seems to have been stolen from the school district's card catalog, I had a relative search.
Oh how sad! I know this isn't it, but I thought I'd share. Maybe its close and you can put a chocolate glazer on top. th-cam.com/video/hIhYOgc8y1A/w-d-xo.html
Hi Clara! Yes, I know those well and have received many requests. That is a yeast dough which the video way too long. But I remember them well, they were delicious!
I do have the recipe but it's a yeast dough and I've been going back and forth because of how long the video would be. Maybe I will get brave next year!! 🍸💖
Our mom made a thin (maybe 3/4" thick) cake called Coffee Cake that I made as a kid a few times. It used regular or instant liquid coffee that I think was combined into the icing. I last made it over 40 years ago. lol Come tomorrow, I'll double check. I think I have that recipe of hers on a card she gave me. If correct, I'll post it, here. It includes raisins, which of course can be left out. The pricy golden raisins are awesome, when baking. They stay way plumper and juicy. As a kid I of course hated coffee. But, I loved the cake. It's probably just a thin spice cake with raisins and a coffee infused icing.
Hi cartoon jelly jar, welcome! Can I tell you how much I love your name! The most wonderful thing about my channel is that people share their childhood memories and I am so honored that you've shared yours! This cake sounds amazing! As you know, normally a coffee cake is called a coffee cake because it's eaten with coffee but to actually add coffee sound pretty wonderful! I would love to see your recipe! This one is just a classic that's so many students in my part of the country grew up with. And is quite wonderful! I hope you have more fun exploring retro history through food and finding more childhood memories! Those are always welcome here, have the most beautiful day!🍸❤️
@@yesterkitchen My sisters responded. We all have the same recipe from Mom called Overnight Coffee Cake. It's not the correct recipe. I remembered something important. I was 10-12 when making it myself for all of us. I was definitely reading the recipe. It had instructions to add the liquid coffee to the powdered sugar icing recipe replacing the water with liquid coffee. So the correct recipe either disappeared before Mom passed away or my sisters need to look more thoroughly. lol I looked very thoroughly for it. Maybe you can tweak the regular recipe with actual liquid coffee to the homemade icing and show your viewers a delicious spin to it? People can add raisins or whatever they like or just leave it out. I like Golden raisins as they stay plumper at 2 or 3 times the cost. lol Btw our parents grew up during the depression. So the correct recipe was probably floating around for a very long time. And just for your imagery...I'm the youngest of 6 kids...Mike, Ted, Jane, Kim, Cammy, Richard. There's a 17 or18 yr spread with all of us being either 3 or 4 yrs apart. Unusual?
@@cartoonjellyjar1 wow! I love that you reached out to your sisters and shared some memories! And powdered sugar and coffee would make a beautiful glaze! Sad that the original recipe is lost in time but it's clearly in your memories and that's the most beautiful part. Thank you for sharing, that just brought so much joy. And I know it's not very common but we have 6 kids all 4 years apart except for the twins, lol! That was a very long 9 minutes! I'm actually in the middle of a move so once I get settled I would love to try to play around with your recipe. It sounds wonderful! I am so honored you are here and I'm so honored that you shared! You are such a wonderful addition to YesterKitchen! Thank you!🍸❤️
Wow, this looks delicious! It'd go so well with a Chai latte. I think the closest I've come to a school-specific cake is I helped a teacher make a mint Andes Candies-themed icebox cake once. It was just plain Famous Chocolate Wafers coated in Cool Whip, with chopped Andes on top... But we even dyed the Cool Whip mint green to really push the mint theme home!
Green cool whip is awesome! And I love Andes so how can you go wrong? But you are so right Teddy! This will go so well with chai! Let me know if you give it a try! I will have to take a break from this cake for a bit because I ate most of it! LOL!!!
My sister been trying to make the lausd chalupas I don’t know if I spelled it right but it looks like a corn shell boat looking like with beef and cheese I am sorry if I’m not detailed enough I’m going off memory but do you know how to make it
Hello how about that sweet roll recipe that they had at school there was a choice of the coffee cake or the sweet roll or the bagel with butter, and my favorite was always the sweet roll I would love it if someone has the recipe pls
Hi Jill! My fondest memories of Jr Hi and Hi school...I went to Hale.....then ECR (class of 1975)... is the cafeteria food! The coffee cake was great!! Do you have you a recipe for the sweet rolls?....or any other caf food? Did ECR still have Hula burgers when you were there?
Hi Jeffrey! I remember Hale! I was later than you and I don't remember the hula Burger but I would love to hear about it! What was it like? And I have received lots of requests for the cinnamon rolls. I do have the recipe but it's a yeast dough and takes way too long for me to do a short episode. Maybe in 2020 I'll do one special longer episode and teach you all how to make them.❤️🍸
@@yesterkitchen ... A Hula burger was not all the special. Regular burger with lettuce, tomato, pickles. and T/O dressing on a sesame seed bun. {Smiling} It was better than the traditional plain "oatmeal burgers"....which I thought were good too :) I think I like the cinnamon rolls better than the coffee cake. Though both were great. I look forward to seeing your version someday! I know making cinnamon rolls is quite a process...One I haven't tried ....yet. I wish LAUSD would come out with a legacy cookbook! I wonder if the individual schools still have the recipes from years gone by? Anyway, Have a Happy New Year!!
@@BlueRiderVTA Oh!!! I was thinking for sure pineapple was on the burger, LOL!! And yep...as soon as i figure out how to do an episode with my time constraints you will definitely see the cinnamon rolls! I agree on the cookbook but hopefully I can fill in the gaps! 🤗 Happy New Year to you too!!!

Hi Eve! If you want the authentic flavor, you need to use buttermilk. I can't tell you how much I love that you've heard about it! Now you can make it and see what all the excitement is about! Seriously, this is so ridiculously good! I had to give it away to stop myself from eating it! LOL!
San Diego until the 6th grade. Then here in Southern Michigan. There was peanut butter chocolate bars, so much better than those candy cups! And, Mrs. D, from the Catholic school cafeteria, gave me the recipe. It included a pound of peanuts instead of crunchy peanut butter like at my school. But Mrs. V always served coffee. Kids in school hated me, and anyone else whose property included farmland rather than lake frontage (they didn't know, we all had our oqn lake...)

Hey Jill, I compare every coffee cake to this Orville Wright JUNIOR HIGH and Westchester High School coffee cake! My sister is 5.5 years older and we always talk about "this" coffee cake. I have two questions for you... 1. How'd you get the recipe? 2. Is it possible for you to get the LAUSD recipe for their Cinnamon Rolls? :D
Hi Albert! Thank you and Welcome! I guess this recipe passed the test! I have been studying food history for 30 years so I've had it for a very long time. I don't remember from where, I have literally thousands of vintage recipes that I've collected over the years. . I have a very long list of recipes to create episodes out of and it was just the time to do the coffee cake. :) I have the cinnamon roll recipe but it will be awhile until I do that episode. It is a yeast recipe which takes longer than the average video. It's really a process to make them.
Hi Brandi! No way! So you were 5 years behind me. I remember students working in the cafeteria, and I'm super bummed that they stopped making the cakes. But this coffee cake brings back memories every single time!
I remember that cake and I actually make a cake similar to that. But tell me… Do you remember the peanut butter coffee cake. That one is amazing, when I make it and take it to work, it will not stay on the table more than 10 minutes. I currently live in Las vegas so they don’t know about LA USD😂

Baking in an Oven That’s Too Hot or Cold, temp must be accurate Using Too Much Baking Powder or Baking Soda incorporating too much air into your batter when mixing Hope one of these is the culprit, this is such a great cake and I've had hundreds of happy bakes reported to me!
I remember pouring all that oil in that kettle mixer. it sure tasted good till we got the premixed junk, thats what the on sites use now. nothing from scratch anymore.
Hi Michelle! Welcome! Did/do you work in a school cafeteria? If I read that right, I am so excited that you are here! And I guess you just validated my suspicions. That's so sad. We had no idea how good we had it back then. And how lucky we were to get scratch cooking in school. Thank you for always being there to fill student's tummies! What a treasure to have you visit! 🍸❤️
I think your talking about the one that came in a oval shaped container and the bread had peanuts on top. I loved that one even more then the one on this video.
C F idk if it had Peanuts i remember it being smooth on top and came in like this little tray that had eggs inside and that same tray had a little oval shape at the end with the cake in it no toppings and it had a plastic cover on it
I’ve been making this cake since the pandemic started.
Hollenbeck Jr. High, early 1970's
I went to Commonwealth as well ❤ ohh I remember this cake.
Thank you everyone for you love and support! This is such a fun journey and I so appreciate you all coming along for the ride with me! 💖🍸
Hi Jill, I grew up in lausd. I remember this amazing cake! You'll hear from me again after I try it.
I have lots of memories. This was my second love ❤️.
I loved loved loved the LAUSD square roll.
Hi Sandra! Right? So many memories! This is it! Make it, it will take you right back!
@@yesterkitchen My wife said it was EXACTLY like she remembered. Thank you very much. 😘
I went to Teresa Hughes elementary school in Cudahy and I loved this coffee cake! Been craving it for years.
I'm so happy! This is the real deal, I hope you try it! 💖🍸
I went to Olive Vista Jr High and Sylmar High school, always got the coffee cake at recess and lunch from 1980 through 1986.
Made this the other day exactly how you did it and it came out perfect 😍 thank you !
Oh yay Jessica! I'm so happy! Isn't it awesome the childhood memories it brings back? You made my day! 🍸❤️
YES...YES...YES!!!!
I've been craving this specific coffee cake, on and off for yearssss. I'm making this asap, so when I eat it, I can close my eyes and be transported back to high school all over again. 😊
Hi Spa Girl! Yes, yes, yes! I'm so happy you found it! And yes, it will take you right back! Enjoy!!
I went to John Burroughs Jr. High School in Hancock Park and Fairfax High. I loved this coffee cake.
Hi ohgrowup! What a great name!! How cool! You were about an hour away from me! I'm so happy you remember and love this cake! This is it! I hope you give it a try and get some childhood memories! Have fun exploring more retro history through food here! And have a beautiful day! 🍸❤️
I'm so glad you have this recipe, I'm going to make this ASAP, thank you so much.
It will bring you right back!
My Mom went to LAUSD in the 40s so they had it before 1954 - I also went to LAUSD and I loved this cake
That is so cool! But this recipe was developed in 1954. So I am guessing they had coffee cake, but not this one. :)
OMG!!! I use to love that coffee cake and im definitely going to make it thanks for the video!!❤❤
Hi Derrick! Thank you so much! This will take you right back! Enjoy!!
@@yesterkitchen You are so right. It's not like it used to be. Also, that was before everything was 'healthy".
@@fortheloveofchocolat And we turned out just fine! LOL!
Oh my.... Second street elementary/Hollenbeck Junior High/Roosevelt High School.... I lived off of that cake back in the 70's!
Love this!
Um, Um, Um.
I'm so happy! Please let me know! It's the real deal!

We must have been neighbors. I lived right up the hill from El Camino and i loved this coffee cake
Almost makes me want to go back to school - almost:)
LOL!!! ....Almost! 😲🍸

Ah, but what do I know? ;) R, Steve
@@steveinla8963 you must be new, welcome! I'm in Idaho and Palm Springs. I've filmed many videos from both places!
R, Steve

I did. And they stop making the peanut butter coffee cake as well as the blueberry coffee cake as well
Our mom made a thin (maybe 3/4" thick) cake called Coffee Cake that I made as a kid a few times.
And I know it's not very common but we have 6 kids all 4 years apart except for the twins, lol! That was a very long 9 minutes!

LOL!!!

Hello how about that sweet roll recipe that they had at school there was a choice of the coffee cake or the sweet roll or the bagel with butter, and my favorite was always the sweet roll I would love it if someone has the recipe pls
@@traceyhowze8118 I loved those rolls too! I never did a video because it's a yeast dough and the video would be too long.
@@yesterkitchen wow I loved loved those rolls all that butter OMG by the way my coffee came out fantastic thanks for the recipe 💜
@@traceyhowze8118 I'm so happy you made it! You are so very welcome! I hope you find more childhood memories here on my channel
@@yesterkitchen Fun fact....I used to be a teacher.....and did some of my student teaching at ECR....circa 1991. I taught PE. My master teacher was coach Stam.
No way! That is a fun fact! I remember Stam! Seems like forever ago!
I too, Hughes, and ECR!
No way!!! That is so awesome! Small world! I rarely see Hughes!
That was one of my favorites! Do you have the one that was like peanubutter ooh! That's was sooo good! I always loved the corner piece😋
Nance Barb omg! I remember the peanut butter one!! So good!!
I have had numerous requests for the peanut butter one and have tracked down the recipe! It is on my very long to do list so stay tuned! In the meantime, enjoy all the retro recipes I have explored on my channel!! Thank you for stopping by!!! 💖🍸
What about the chalupa? Who remembers that ? I use too many eat two of them lol! Volunteered at the cafeteria back in the days
Do you have the recipes for the sweet rolls from LAUSD. They were so good they would sale out every day
I remember those sweet rolls!!!! They were so good!! I haven't come across that one. 🙄 But if I do, I will certainly try to make an episode out of it! 💖
dede roque
Hi I’ve been searching for that recipe too! I went to Van Nuys Jr High in late 60’s and those cinnamon rolls were the bomb. Actually maybe they were more just sweet rolls like you said but man they were good.
What about the sausage that came on the side?
Hmmmmm.... I don't remember sausage. I just remember one piece of this glorious cake served on wax paper. If you have any details, please let me know.
I preferred that big chicken nugget with the chocolate milk!
Hello! I was just wondering what kind of Flower do I use? It is just Any regular flower? I’m not an Experience baker or anything lol
Hi Alexis! Great question! Regular all purpose flour will be perfect! Let me know how it came out! 🍸❤️
The cake came out perfect!!!! Thank you so much! 🙏🏼
I was going to ask the same thing. Glad I snooped through the comments. 😋
i wanna cry"...😥...and i remembered the peanut butter bread as well..
Hi Flora! Awww....don't cry. At least you can make it! And if you didn't see it, I also did a video on the peanut butter bread! Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy the memories here!!! 🍸💖
I wolud Cute In Line For The Cofee Cake
Then you have to make it! I promise this will take you right back and you won't even have to cut in line!

In going to make it!!! Thank you!!!
Oh Yay Samantha!!! Please let me know when you do! I love it so much and brings back so many childhood memories! 💖🍸
Can I use other kinds of milk instead of buttermilk?
Hi Eve! If you want the authentic flavor, you need to use buttermilk. But, if you don't have buttermilk, you can substitute 1 tablespoon of either white vinegar or lemon juice plus enough milk to measure one cup. I hope you enjoy! And I'm so glad you're here, have fun learning history through food on my channel!❤️🍸
Omg I went to El Comino Real high school, only one year lol
Awesome! What year? Did you have this cake? ❤️🍸
@@yesterkitchen in the early 80's elementary school and late 80s junior high school
@@yesterkitchen I went to El Camino Real for one year for 10th grade, then transferred to Chatsworth High school, 11th grade, then 12th grade I went closer to home. WESTCHESTER SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL class of 91😁

I was born and raised in Orange County but I've heard about the coffee cake up there! The kids loved them. Did you have to bribe a lunch lady to get the secret recipe for this one? 😂 good one Jill!
I can't tell you how much I love that you've heard about it! Now you can make it and see what all the excitement is about! Seriously, this is so ridiculously good! I had to give it away to stop myself from eating it! LOL!
Do you also have the chocolate chip cookies recipe?
@@socal-trojan-cowboysfan6925 unfortunately I do not
Thank you! Anyways & they also had a peanut butter flavored cornbread how about that one?

Thank you so much 🙏
in the 1960s the schools actually had kitchens and the student meals were made from scratch
I just love your stories! And peanuts over peanut butter? Definitely! Kids can be so mean. So happy you had your own lake! 🍸❤️
I remember the chalupas from LAUSD. Sooo good it was a round tortilla with cheese and pieces of sausage in it!!!
Hi Bee Bee! Oh yum! That must have come after my time. Thank you for sharing that memory! I learn so much! I hope you have fun exploring more retro history through food here! Have a beautiful day! 🍸❤️
my mom was irish, could you do a irish stew sometime
I will definitely add that to my list!!! It's sooo good!
I graduated 40 years ago do they still make this in school
Hi Jackie! From what I hear some do but it just isn't the same. No longer made from scratch. What a shame. How lucky were we to have to have the wonderful version! But if you make this, you will go right back to school! 🍸💖
how about the peanut butter bread too i would love dat tooo please ??????
The peanut butter bread is in my to do list! Not sure when it is coming out, but stay tuned! Thanks for stopping by, have fun learning history through food here! 💖🍸
That would be great! The coffee cake was my favorite, but the cinnamon rolls were a very close second.
I want to Hughes Junior high back in 1985 And I work in the cafeteria
Hi Brandi!
Hi Adrienne, I sure do! Enjoy!

Hi cylon! Yep, no baking powder in the original 1955 recipe. But your cake should be out of the oven by now...hope the memories flood in!
I so remember the grilled cheese but not the chicken, I"ll have to look into that.
But...Here's the Peanut Butter Bread/Cake!

This is not the original cake this is the revised version. The old version from the 70's was warm and oily this one was made for health consicience recipe
Hi Paul. Actually not true. This recipe came directly from the LAUSD recipe files from 1954.
My coffee cake sunk in the middle
Oh no Luigi! There are a few reasons cakes sink in the middle. Hoping fixing one of these may help.
#1 reason is taking your cake out before its tested done
other reasons....
Baking in an Oven That’s Too Hot or Cold, temp must be accurate
Using Too Much Baking Powder or Baking Soda
incorporating too much air into your batter when mixing
Hope one of these is the culprit, this is such a great cake and I've had hundreds of happy bakes reported to me!
I did
I remember pouring all that oil in that kettle mixer. it sure tasted good till we got the premixed junk, thats what the on sites use now. nothing from scratch anymore.
@@yesterkitchen Lausd does have all the old recipes in there archives but no one wants to make a book from it.. that is sad.
You forgot to add half cup of lard
Is this the one that came in an Oval shape ?
This one came exactly as I showed... Square cut on wax paper
