We lost Mum a few weeks ago at 60, Duran Duran was her favourite band ever, and this song has so, so many connections for us to remember her by. RIP Mum xx
I found my poor sweet big brother dead in his bed on 7/30/20. That was the most devastating day of my life. I don’t remember the first few days after. But the Sunday after I put on my brave face and went to clean out his room and get it ready to be emptied. For some reason the moment I opened his door this song came into my head. I hadn’t thought about or heard it in literal years but there it was strong and clear every note and lyric. I burst into tears with the perfection of how exactly it captured what I’m going through. Thanks Duran Duran. My brother loved this song when we were teens. We both did.

My husband passed away suddenly last week. 12/22/22. My heart is broken and this song has been on repeat at my house. Except for me it’s while I cry for yesterday. Thank you Duran Duran.
This (divinely-inspired) music will help you focus on loss; but when the time comes it will help you to move on from loss as well. God console you, and be with you, my friend!
"Ordinary World" traces an emotional and philosophical journey that, through grief, reflects the struggle between clinging to the past and accepting a transformed reality. From psychoanalysis, it represents an attempt at integration and acceptance of loss; From philosophy, the song becomes an existential search for meaning and authenticity, despite absence and suffering. It is a narrative of both emotional reconciliation and rediscovery of oneself in a world that is perceived to be transformed. Brillant song! Pure art.

I'm always torn between this and Come Undone as their masterpiece- both are probably in the top 10 of best pop songs ever made. Both of these songs were 40 years ahead of their time
I picked out this song to be played at my dads funeral this past week, it felt appropriate. I’ll always remember the great memories we shared together. I’ll miss you dad! 😢
If I were your dad, I'd be proud that this was the song you picked. It's an extremely meaningful one and a beautiful choice. I'm sorry for your loss, and I hope you find some semblance of comfort in the fact that others see the beauty in your choice.
Agree Joe… Just heard this song now for the 1st time in a LONG TIME….. LOW KEY, This song is an absolute classic and highly underrated IMO and RIGHT NOW is my fav. Duran Duran (and Duran Duran has ALOT of great songs)…..
A great song but they had bigger hits like reflex, is there something I should know and hungry like the wolf, though this is the most soul wrenching song they did.
I was dirt poor, hungry, lonely, alone and no one to help me when this song came out and went through my ears to forever in my soul, now I'm quite well taken care of. Never Give Up.
When we lose someone we love so much, or go through something that is so hard and a loss, this song tells us what to do. We must find the ordinary world and somehow relearn how to survive. What a gift.
Yes!!! Made me cry, but with those bittersweet tears of nostalgia and true love... Maybe it's just fondness of being young, but on the other hand - I've never felt lonelier than I do today, in my late forties, while I was shunned as a teen by practically everyone. But I had THOSE STUNNING DEEP THINGS, true gifts from MTV: great music and artful, insightful videos....
1 of the all time greatest songs & groups of ALLTIME! This song is SOOO personal to me on SOOOO MANY levels & SOOO MANY reasons! Thank you Duran ² for all the beautiful memories still experiencing with yur amazing music in 2025❤❤❤
I agree. They were one of the best bands of the early to mid 80s. They were considered a bunch of pretty boys but they were also good musicians and songwriters. This was one of their more mature sounding songs but it's still very much them. To me the best pop music was late 70s to early 90s because that's the era I was listening to these as a child and right up until my early 20s so it resonates with me. There's a sadness to this song that is almost like me kissing goodbye to my youth back in 93 from one of my favourite bands of the era.
Right before my wife passed away, she made me promise her that I would move on and find happiness again. During the rough years of grieving this song served as a reminder of a promise I made to someone who I love dearly to this day. That was many years ago. Today I have a loving wife and twins in high school. This song now serves as a reminder of a promise kept. This song still makes me cry.
Over the past 40 years many of my friends and family have past away, too many, and the wounds do not heel, but from this sorrow, there is joy, in the bright light of hope, the joy of love I have from our Grand children, they are our world now
This song is piece of art. Solo is a masterpiece. Simplicity and outstanding match for the song. It’s 30 years since premiere and it still gives me shivers
I agree with your sentiment, but this song is anything but simple. It has an incredibly complex chord structure and progression and the use of borrowed cords is very unique and bordering on genius.
I am so sorry for your losses. Your new normal is never gonna feel normal...it is one you only adjust to on different levels as you go through life... learning to survive trying to make your way to an ordinary world.💜
Memories are precious. She is in your heart. Keep her their. Your new ' ordinary world' won't ever be the same. It stays with through out your life, until the end. Your new normal. Keep the love, and her, in your heart, ALWAYS. Keep the love. She will always be there for you in your heart, your ' ordinary life. Everyone has their ordinary life of loss, of love. God bless you, love & hugs. Keep going. Hang in there. I've lost SO many. I can't even begin,,so I don't,,, 🤗💔❣️
28 years later, and I'm still listening to this amazing song! I came home from my Dad's funeral in 1993, turned on the TV... And this video came on 😢 I was 16 and a half.. prophetic words I thought to myself 💪🏻
This song represents a wonderful era, which no longer exists. Everything has changed, everything is different. Beautiful memories are destined to be lost over time.
The other day, I was thinking about all the missed opportunities for greatness that everyone has missed for all history and was feeling the weight of all that was lost, and then I remembered God. He sent His Son into the world to save everything good that was lost. Everything good is saved and we will find it again when we enter His kingdom. We have a beautiful God.
"And I don't cry for yesterday There's an ordinary world Somehow I have to find And as I try to make my way To the ordinary world I will learn to survive" This may be what everyone of us is feeling about those coronavirus days that seem never end. One of the greatest lyrics and songs from the 90's.
The older i get the more the lyrics hit home, absolute beast of a song and absolutely soul cleansing, when i listen to it the dam wall breaks and the tears flow.
This song is another level of music, by far their best. From it's message in the chorus'" I will learn to survive' to the mesmerizing guitar, to Simon Le Bon's perfect falsetto at the end. Simon said this song helped him to recover emotionally from the death of his friend David Miles. Amazing how powerful emotions can bring out greatness!
I was 31 years of age when this song came out, and the same year my wife died. . . . "Where is my friend when I need you most" . . . I thought they wrote this song for me. . . . . . I had to learn to survive! Thank you Duran Duran.
@@stephaniem5091 . . .thank you. No you don't get over, just thru it. . . but the loss is always with you. Wonderful memories today, about the beautiful person that she was. I only wish her son/my son had the time to spend with her. Today he is 31 . . . . the same age I was when she passed. I guess in a selfish way, when she passed I just wanted the world to stop, if only for a second. Looking back, the world has changed so much. And in my own grief, I've been able to take care of others with strength and understanding of how painful life can often be. Again thank you. . .today I am blessed. ✝️
I’m liking this comment because it brought tears too my eyes to read & I agree with you on feeling like it was wrote for you, because I feel it was wrote for me too during a time in my life. Bless you & everyone that goes through pain. Please remember that we have these songs to help us through these times of pain.
This song captures the essence of what we all go through in life one way or another, including loss and change, new challenges and old regrets but somehow we will survive! Such a perfect song!
When I first heard this song in 1993, I was 15 years old. Although it was my first time listening to it, at some inexplicable level it's as if I had heard it before a 1000 times. It spoke to me in a very deep personal way. As a confused lonely teenager I found comfort in the song and its lyrics. I felt like I didn't belong anywhere, and at the same time I didn't have anyone to share my feelings of alienation. I only had THIS song. The lyrics conveyed my feelings of sadness, fear and hope. I longed so much to find my Ordinary World. As the years went by, and my life continued through its twists and turns, I continued to come back to this song, for comfort, for peace, to grieve, to reminisce, to cherish. One of the things I discovered as I aged and matured was that the Ordinary World I yearned for so long as a teenager, was always here, within me. And thanks to this song, I found it. Thank you so much Duran Duran. This song is a gift. This song is priceless. This song is a masterpiece.
In 1993 I was going through a very dark and depressing time in my life. I came across this song and pretty much made it my Mantra. Thank you Duran Duran for writing such an incredible and inspirational song. Love always
It's amazing how a man of a different nationality and from a different continent, with an entirely different lifestyle and life experiences and worldview and character can perfectly encapsulate how you've been feeling for months. Put in to words thoughts that you yourself couldn't. Felt like this was coming out of my own soul while I was listening to it.
I do not know what word you have for the Holy Spirit - but that is who is at work here. Sad and nostalgic and happy and ecstatic are all the same to Him, as all come from love, and God is love...
My Mothers favorite song. She passed away in 2014. Im 49 this year and still think of her often. Spend as much time as you can with your loved one kids.
This song reminds me of my times in the 90’s spent with my father who is no longer with us. Miss him loads but the song brings him back. Truly outstanding.
Yes my uncle would listen to this as I watched himself destruct , after losing his family I used to wonder why he liked this as I was into hard rap ,now I understand ,RIP uncle Paul ,he also liked come undone
100%. The vocals, arrangement, instrumentation, and not forcing the song length to fit the artistry rather than a 2 minute 45 seconds ideal length for AM radio. Never tire of this song.
I've been listening to /involved /reviewing music most of my life. my top 10 changes every day. dunno how you can have a best of until you've heard it all. but I will keep trying. track is quality no doubt.
This song fires on all cylinders, everything about it is perfect. This song and the other song off this album, "Come Undone" are both masterpieces and a staple of 90's music.
@@MetalFriscoDude79 You're right! I just Googled and found this: The origins of "Ordinary World" were the results of tragedy: the death of singer Simon Le Bon's good friend, David Miles, of a drug overdose in 1986. “I'm not a big believer in the supernatural, but six years after [my friend's death], I started to feel a weight inside me," Le Bon told Paste in 2017.
Heard it on my way to work this morning as I grieve for my husband who passed away from covid the end of December. This puts all my feelings in perspective
That's my favorite idol and I'm gonna ask Simon Lebon if he's available on Saturday night so we can be housemates and he'll teach me to sing some of his songs I happened to have a keyboard which is a musical instrument I wondered who plays a keyboard in Duran Duran can you please find out who it was?
I know this song came out in 1993, but Duran Duran was such an 80’s band, so for them to enter a new decade and reinvent themselves with this song is a a rare skill *MANY* bands fail to do.
My wife of 22 years has spent the last month in intensive care battling a serious and life threatening illness! I’m lost without her, this song about loss, hope and the need to carry on resonates with me more than ever at this moment in time. I’m confident she will recover but for now the person I needed the most to get me through tough situations isn’t here and that’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to deal with.
@@prettyhatemachine8887 I am from England, she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder called Guillian barre. It is treatable and she is improving day by day. But in its acute phase it’s a very scary condition and paralysed her breathing muscles.
@@MrKeefelm I'm glad she's recovering, this disorder is not a walk in the park to put it lightly. Did she take the vaccine? There's actually a big increase in Guillain barre cases this year and it's associated with the COVID mRNA vaccines. In fact, there's an increase in all kinds of autoimmune disorders and other unrelated illnesses such as some types of cancer, blood clot related diseases, certain viral diseases and more, and they all seem to be associated with those vaccines.
@@prettyhatemachine8887 She has autoimmune problems already, under active Thyroid and a potential unconfirmed diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis. She is COVID vaccinated but that was months ago. A doctor has potentially put it down a reaction to the Flu vaccine which for some reason is pretty potent this year. My stance on vaccines hasn’t been altered by this, she’s just been very unlucky as this condition is still pretty rare. (Only around a 1000 people a year in the UK) No vaccine claims to be 100% risk free,. However I guess it would be naive to not take a more cautious approach in future.
"I will learn to survive"...that's a powerfull sentence for everyone that is going across a loss or a hard time. Life is a mistery and we have to keep on moving.
I first heard this when it was playing in a store while I was shopping. I simply stopped in the.middle of the shop and stood there, stunned. A truly astounding song, so beautiful and a tremendous songwriting achievement. The emotional awareness and feeling are in another dimension.
Such a powerful song. The chorus has me thinking of how we all transition out of our youth and into true adulthood. We all have our struggles, but we find our way in the end.
Yes the second half of the chorus symbolises my place in life right now although the last line '...I Will learn to survive' would be converted to a past participle rewording in my case today
The melancholy expressed in this song is physically palpable. My heart physically hurts while listening to it, yet I can't stop playing it over and over.
This song makes me feel so identified and emotional with the final part in which He says " I Will learn to survive ",also makes me cry for what the singer had inside back in the moment.
I've been an avid Duranie since 1982. This song highlights the poetic genius of Simon le Bon. I have lost both of my parents. My relationship with each could not have been more different. And yet this song feels like it could have been written by me about either death. To write something so personal (as this song was to Simon) and then have millions of others feel like it is so personal to them... well that's a master class in songwriting, friends.
Oh it's you again, Erin? Hello from here as well as in the comment below! Further to my reply below, I am interested to see that you find the song appropriate for thinking about death and loss. So perhaps you do not fully see the joy/ecstasy in the song. Because sadness at loss is love, just as joy is love, the Holy Spirit - who is love and truth combined - is brilliant and all-embracing and magnificent enough to fuse those feelings into one. That is the majesty of it, and it is strong and gentle at the same time, just as it is sad and happy. All fine feelings are in there, and of course that is God...
My battle to overcome depression and survive and let go of toxic relationships has brought me here. These words " I don't cry for yesterday there's an ordinary world ....I will learn to survive" 😌
I did also! I always thought it weird how this song made life better, even though it seems rather melancholy. This and Come Undone were my go to songs during those tough times.
I’m 34. I always thought of Duran Duran as an ‘80s band, and then this came up on the ‘90s station, on satellite radio. I was like… This is Duran Duran?! It sounds so different from their earlier material. They sold me with this song. This song always puts me into a deep state of thought and reflection. Absolutely beautiful song. Kudos Duran Duran!
Believe me Winton, I was blind but now I see that a bit of the kudos here goes to the Holy Spirit, who both inspired and resides in this music, spreading out to us the mystery of God's love and mercy pervading the universe. Maybe you know instinctively that this is the truth about this music - how else can it be eternal in the way it is? How else can it transcend" How else can it make us feel ecstasy out of melancholy?
@@danholzer4626 Hahaha!!! Absolutely nothing my friend! I was born in the ‘80s. I love ‘80s bands. I was just speaking to how their sound evolved over time. lol.
I was vacationing in Orlando with my aunt when it played on Mix 105.1 I was fishing with an AM FM radio tape recorder and skipped until the Spencer Davis Group played Gimme Some Lovin'
Message I get from this song: Don't cry for yesterday because yesterday is gone. All we can do is make the best out of what we have. It may not be okay now, but it will be.
@@pup1008 It is. It's a song of loss. The singer has lost someone, someone who was a huge part of their life, and that loss has completely turned their lives upside down. They're struggling to move on, to reach the 'ordinary world', that is, a sense of the normality they had before the loss, and 'learning to survive', that is, figure out how to continue their life without that person in it, but they're not ready yet. They're still grieving, as much as they recognize 'they've somehow got to find' the way back to that 'ordinary world', they can't.
@@GuukanKitsune i ihad no idea with the original release in the 90s that the song was about grief and loss but now all these years later after the recent passing of my father i relate to the lyrics of trying to deal with grief and the process of loss
The Holy Spirit is with you, for a start - as the inspirer of this amazing song, and the force for God's love that resides in it, and spreads out to us encourageing us to "see", change our lives, change the world...
Definitely my favourite song from Duran Duran. I think in fact this is one of the best and prettiest songs in history of music. Thanx guys for that talent 💙🎻🇬🇧

A great song but they had bigger hits like reflex, is there something I should know and hungry like the wolf, though this is the most soul wrenching song they did.
this song taught me life's most important lesson... HUMILITY !!!
?
I was dirt poor, hungry, lonely, alone and no one to help me when this song came out and went through my ears to forever in my soul, now I'm quite well taken care of. Never Give Up.

When we lose someone we love so much, or go through something that is so hard and a loss, this song tells us what to do. We must find the ordinary world and somehow relearn how to survive. What a gift.

Yes. Bless you. ❤
This song still brings a tear to my eye, having lost most of my family I turn to music to help the pain.

63 and feel the same. Where did my life go?? I've lost many family members, and friends are moving away. I am not prepared for all these changes.😢

Probably one of the greatest songs of all time....
I always think of the film Layer Cake when I hear this song.
Yes one of the best , always brings me back to the early 90ths good times better times
Top 10 for sure
Im almost 70 now just addicted to this song and i shade tears while i listen to this masterpiece.
I agree
My wife passed and I also have twins in high school. Every day I wish she was here.
My wife died in December of '22. Your comment brought tears.
Over the past 40 years many of my friends and family have past away, too many, and the wounds do not heel, but from this sorrow, there is joy, in the bright light of hope, the joy of love I have from our Grand children, they are our world now
Wow, brought me to tears!!! She must have been a beautiful lady inside and out. So happy to here you fulfilled your promise. Very special!!!
Pure, pure fire. This song hits like a tidal wave.

This is called: Nostalgia. Short'n'simple.
“Pride’s gone out the window, cross the rooftops, run away.” Incredibly well crafted song. Absolutely beautiful sonically and lyrically.
One of their best, and most emotional songs, by far.
This song helped me grieve my mother in 1992. I can relate.

I guess in a selfish way, when she passed I just wanted the world to stop, if only for a second. Looking back, the world has changed so much. And in my own grief, I've been able to take care of others with strength and understanding of how painful life can often be. Again thank you. . .today I am blessed. ✝️

I think so too, a genius
Yes it had a profound affect on me as a teenager. Lonely, melancholy and mysterious
Felt like this was coming out of my own soul while I was listening to it.
well said.
I do not know what word you have for the Holy Spirit - but that is who is at work here. Sad and nostalgic and happy and ecstatic are all the same to Him, as all come from love, and God is love...

Is this song about a friend who died? I'm getting those kind of vibes
@@MetalFriscoDude79 You're right! I just Googled and found this:
The origins of "Ordinary World" were the results of tragedy: the death of singer Simon Le Bon's good friend, David Miles, of a drug overdose in 1986. “I'm not a big believer in the supernatural, but six years after [my friend's death], I started to feel a weight inside me," Le Bon told Paste in 2017.

What illness does she have and which country are you from?
However I guess it would be naive to not take a more cautious approach in future.

couldn't believe this was released 30 years ago!
Yes the second half of the chorus symbolises my place in life right now although the last line '...I Will learn to survive' would be converted to a past participle rewording in my case today
The melancholy expressed in this song is physically palpable.

Yes, over and over and over.
You described it perfectly.

I think it's about someone's death?
@@pup1008 It is. It's a song of loss.
The singer has lost someone, someone who was a huge part of their life, and that loss has completely turned their lives upside down.
They're struggling to move on, to reach the 'ordinary world', that is, a sense of the normality they had before the loss, and 'learning to survive', that is, figure out how to continue their life without that person in it, but they're not ready yet. They're still grieving, as much as they recognize 'they've somehow got to find' the way back to that 'ordinary world', they can't.

Came in from a rainy Thursday
On the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly
I turned on the lights, the TV
And the radio
Still I can't escape the ghost of you
[Pre-Chorus]
What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away
[Chorus]
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
[Verse 2]
Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Well now pride's gone out the window
Cross the rooftops
Run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart
[Pre-Chorus]
What is happening to me?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away
[Chorus]
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
[Bridge]
Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and greed
Fear today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here beside the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk
(Just blown away)
[Chorus]
And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
[Outro]
Every world
Is my world
(I will learn to survive)
Any world
Is my world
(I will learn to survive)
Any world
Is my world
Every world
Is my world

Timeless. Always resonates with my life somehow.
And mine, and that of thousands or millions of us.
But the "somehow" is easier than you think ... it's God.
Things have meaning.
Sid... you're a pain in the arse .

Lyrics 🎉
Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly
I turned on the lights, the TV, and the radio
Still, I can't escape the ghost of you
What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is the life that I recognize?
(Gone away)
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
"Pride will tear us both apart"
Well now pride's gone out the window
Cross the rooftops
Run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart
What is happening to me?
Crazy, some'd say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
(Gone away)
But I won't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Ooh-ooh-ooh, ah-ah
Oh, yeah, oh
Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and greed
Fear today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here besides the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk
And I don't cry for yesterday
There's an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Every world
Is my world (I will learn to survive)
Any world
Is my world (I will learn to survive)
Any world
Is my world
Every world
Is my world

Yes. Ya no hay de estos artistas ✌✌
43 years old, but this song sounds like it came out yesterday. What a talented bunch of people, with a song that will always stand the test of time
Are you a time traveller from 2035? 🤔

Fact: This is Duran Duran's best song.
Very true!! No question about it.
I think it is. AND I saw an interview where they asked Duran Duran which song they thought was their best song and they answered: ORDINARY WORLD. So, it is a FACT. :)
Absolutely
Without Doubt
It's the best if you wanna relax. If you wanna celebrate, it's "Wild Boys". Agree?
