When I was debating between upgrading my iPad in 2019, or getting a Wacom Cintiq, I made the decision for my iPad Pro. I already had procreate on my previous iPad, so I didn’t need to buy it again. With Cintiq, I probably had to upgrade my computer at some point.
The iPad Pro I got in 2019, I still use every single day and it runs like a dream, added bonus that I didn’t need an overpriced Adobe subscription to actually draw.

It will be an ultra small project. One thing iPads aren’t designed for is server integration. So sharing files across people will be a pain, and also if you work in a big studio they are crazy secure with their files, and all these security programs in your PC at work just don’t exist on iPad.
You will see small projects, commercials, video clips shorts. Segments in films and tv shows use it. Tiktok and TH-cam projects.
A full production pipeline on iPad won’t happen. Studios would love that, because cintiq’s, computers are expensive, but the logistics mentioned before means we are far away from that.

It’s not just about the software, it’s about the person who uses the software. Heck, Aaron Blaise probably could have made the same film in Callipeg or ToonSquid. The most important thing when producing old school Disney animation is knowing all the tips and tricks found in animation books, knowing how to use reference the right way, and mastering the charts.

    • @GerasSB
      @GerasSB 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@dillonwright13 I think the point OP is trying to make is that producing an entire animation before was simply not feasible for $20, and even the top apps in the industry that cost much more suffer from problems; Adobe Animate is a nightmare to work with as anyone who's used it can testify, Toon Boom Harmony is a spaceship and extremely hard to understand and use without straight up studying it, and Clip Studio has a subpar player, doesn't even have audio scrubbing, and I have no clue how it would handle long animations. Procreate Dreams is claiming to have fixed all those issues while ALSO being orders of magnitude cheaper AND being able to achieve the highest degree of results.

    • @janmartenlocher

I'm hoping for a Disney Animation comeback, though! Blaise DID a GREAT WORK here, of course..
I once did an animationmovie in filmschool ( in ANIMO, back then) Funnily about a bird that tries to fly, also falls on a branch, and also get's catapulted into air to discover "his REAL FLYING abilities, after all, called ICARUS.. This TRIGGERED me , personally, seeing this ( in a GOOD WAY! Thanks Aaron Blaise !!) Really!! But all his personal craft, mastery and wizardry beside, this is STILL ASTONISHING, that apperantly you could do the exact LOOK and FEEL, INSIDE THIS new standalone-software..(with the right knowlege of course), for just a ONE TIME PAYMENT!! The drawings were DRAWN INSIDE the software, that means the brushes, onion skinning , flipbook-thing is WORKING and you can also work with SOUND inside, do a avoice-over directly in PCD, editing, colouring, you NAME it !! Gives me HOPE! GOOD JOB !! Need to TRY THIS OUT in the future, maybe only for Storyboarding /animatics I'm pretty rusty in animation, nowadays 😀!@@dillonwright13

Tiny correction: The only parts that were animated frame by frame in the Witch piece were the eye blinks and the beaks of the seagulls.
Everything else was warp/position/scale/rotation/ performed. Her purse is animated via rotation perform, her skirt/hat/hair is multiple passes of warp perform (you can just keep recording over each perform warp pass and it just adds deformations on top. super powerful), the broom wiggle was warp performed on two separate layers, the seagull wings were y-scale performed etc. I could have done all of it frame by frame too, but warp perform is much faster and non-destructive.

I really hope it works smoothly on a non-M1/M2 chip, apparently mine has an A12 or something like that and idk how willing I am to get a new ipad even if this one breaks
Edit: I don't understand tech terms, but a LOT of the stats showing that an M1 chip has like double the efficiency so all I can do is pray 😭

I'm assuming it'll run on any iPad that supports Procreate. Mine has the A12 chip as well at only 32 gigs of storage yet Procreate still runs brilliantly on it because it's so well optimised. Hopefully that's the case with this too

a12 is the one right before the m1, right? there are relatively recent pro models with a12 chips i think, so... yeah, its pretty much guaranteed to be supported on a12 models. twice the efficiency doesnt mean much when the a12 is already very efficient

    • @sloppynyuszi

Procreate are usually pretty good at supporting older iPads. They were the last major app to stop support on the OG ipad. Which even apple only supported with just one OS update 😅
And I think right now procreate runs well on all devices that can run the latest iPad os. So I would imagine on launch it will be the same with dreams. You might have limitations such as not having the million pixel image or limit on animation length or layer count. But that exists on current procreate. So if you are comfortable with current procreate, I think dreams will run fine on your iPad.
Also they don’t have a subscription model, so their incentive is to have this app run on as many iPads as possible.

@@nicodoe6181 yeah the 2018 has an A12X chip, and while yeah theyre both efficient, its more power restricted, being half as powerful as the M1, and probably 33-40% as powerful as the M2, and i imagine it being obliterated by the M3 iPad when that comes.
i have the 2018 11" iPad Pro, and while it is still really good, it is showing its age with some stuttering or app crashes in procreate, or i cant play games as good as i used to

They can easily get $20 a month for the app… So excited they are keeping the philosophy of making software for the artist and not just for profit… As Adobe pushes more towards AI and professional exclusivity it is such a breathe of fresh to see promising alternatives both for professionals and independents… and as iPads are rumored to offer options to be the size of computer monitors by next year i can see a lot of independent creatives really diving deep into this app… Calling it an app almost seems criminal hahaha…

Even if this program runs on older iPads, I'm still going to go with something that has an M1 chip and decent memory. I always like to make sure that what I work with has enough power to get the job done. This app looks EXTREMELY good and the fact that it's running on an IPAD of all things just blows me away. I've been looking for a 2d animation app that has everything I need that isn't a subscription and I think this might be it.

Regarding price: In times when apps were more like toys and often weren't that good, $1 to $5 was okay. But with really good apps, $20 is reasonable (same as with the Affinity apps - really good bang for the buck). Unreasonable people are always around, they can be ignored.

I mean there’s plenty of animation and pro level apps out there that aren’t only hundreds of dollars but they’re also a subscription so you never get to actually own it. So I’m always so happy when good apps like these come out and aren’t a subscription so you get to own it outright and never have to worry about losing it or not having the money to re-subscribe. By 'more advanced,' I mean the ability to select which previous/next frames you'd like to see and to have out-of-pegs/shift and trace capabilities. (It's the ability to move the onion skin images closer together and scale/rotate them. This feature is really helpful for inbetweening.)

I'm not a creative person but the first time I tried video editing software with animation in mind, I was disappointed that there was no way to record a movement live, like moving an image with the mouse in real-time and it would record it as is ... basically, the "performing" mode in Procreate Dreams.
I don't know why but I thought I saw that somewhere before (I thought in flash editors maybe) and thought it was a default feature in this kind of tool.
Since I could not find it anywhere, I thought maybe it was an expensive tool that I saw in the past and for which name I could not remember ... now I know why I could not find it, it didn't exist and I probably mistook it with another feature...
I'm very happy that now it exists and for that feature alone, I will buy the Procreate Dreams!
